They Might Be Giants: Arsenal 4 – Portsmouth 1, Match Review

By DaAdminGooner · 31 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 80 Comments »

Q: What’s 5’6″ and 25 years old?

A: The average height and age of Arsenal’s front line that played at Fratton park yesterday.

So what does that mean? So far, not a lot. Actually in spite of its size deficiencies up front and without a bona-fide striker Arsenal have scored a whopping 15 goals in 6 games (2-0 v Stoke, 2-1 v Pool, 1-1 v Burnley, 3-0 Hull, 3-0 v Villa, and 4-1 v Pompey). They’ve once again gone to scoring more than any team in the league and have scored 51 goals quicker than any team ever has (with a game in hand mind you).  More importantly Arsenal sit only 4 points off the lead set by Chelsea and 2 points behind Manchester United. With the game in hand to be played on 6 January Arsenal could find themselves in 2nd by 1 point and behind Chelsea by only 1 point.

All this comes because of a string of consistent play from the Gunners. That run was culminated on their last game of the New Year when they completely outplayed and outclassed Avram Grant’s Portsmouth side.

Portsmouth started out the match like you pretty much would’ve expected, quickly and with purpose. As much as the Gunners needed 3 points to stay close on the title hunt, Pompey needed the 3 points to stave off relegation. And while Arsenal had most of the play its was the home side that had the first good chance of the match. Pressing up on the counter-attack, Piquionne sped up the right side beating most of the Arsenal defenders back. Unfortunately for him his angle was off and Manuel Almunia had an easy save on the shot.

From their on in it was all Arsenal. Typical to their play, they held the ball with a 70% – 30% possession statistic at one point. Also typical to Arsenal they looked quite threatening but had yet to convert one of their opportunities. That was until  Moekoena brought Aaron Ramsey down just outside the top of the Pompey penalty box. For the third time in as many games, Arsenal were presented with another chance to open the scoring and like the previous two matches Arsenal would not be denied.

Not the face!!!!

Not the face!!!!

With the wall set one of the Pompey players pulled out of the wall to help protect one side of the goal mouth. It was in that opening that Eduardo shot the ball to see it careen off of Kaboul’s knee and fly into the net. Going into the Hull match Arsenal hadn’t scored a goal from a free kick since late 2007. They’ve now managed 3 in their last 3 – all of them to open up the scoring of the match.

Eduardo, who need the goal scoring booth was credited with the goal because as I understand it, his shot was on target. Whether or not Begovic would’ve saved it is irrelevant, if the shot is on target during a deflection than it will be credited to the kicker and not counted as a goal.

Pompey had the chance to try and equalize as they pushed forward but the Arsenal defense effectively shut down any chances Portsmouth had. The back four since the Chelsea drubbing have been a model of consistency, from their positioning, their play on set pieces and their overall presence have been huge. This is coming mostly from the centre of the field with the play of Gallas and Vermaelen. Gallas looks like he is back to his intimidating self and Vermaelen is our new muscle who is playing with an edge. Together they are probably the only cente back pairing of the contenders that has managed to play every league match together. And while they didn’t know each other at the beginning of the season, it seems they enjoy playing along each other and it has helped each of them in their play. Throw in great play by Sagna and lately by Armond Traore and the back four aren’t as much a concern as they would have tought to be.

Manuel Almunia on the other hand, still seems shaky and punches too many balls he should be catching.  But it was another solid game for the Spaniard. There was only two real blunders I saw, a mis played punch (he missed) and a feed to an Arsenal defender that was far too close to a Pompey attacker that had he been a player of quality he could’ve gotten on the ball =and surely beaten Manny.

But I digress.

Arsenal would go on to have 4 different players score. They wouldn’t need Cesc Fabregas to jump start their play – from the get go they were on. The second goal was as much a testament to their skill as it is to the respect Portsmouth defense gave them. With Eduardo controlling the ball around the Pompey box, none of the defenders closed him to cut off his space – why who knows – but Eduardo was able to wait for Ramsey and Nasri to join in and then he let the ball go to Ramsey who flicked it on to Nasri who created his own space and cleanly beat Bergovic with a shot to the wide post and out of the ‘keepers’s reach.

Enough can’t be said of the development of Aaron Ramsey. While he likely has some more time developing before he can become a regular on the field he shows repeatedly why Arsene was sokeen to get him two years ago. He had a couple errant passes in the beginning of the match but overall his play was workman like, cool and collected and you can see that he will in no time be able to run this Arsenal squad. His goal which essentially put the game away was almost Fabregas like in its ability to find the back of the net. And it was all his own doing. Winning the ball back from Portsmouth as they tried to hoof it out of their box, Ramsey swung around made some space and sent and absolute cracker of shot past the Pompey keeper. When he got the ball and with the space given – you knew – like you know when Fab has that kind of room – that the ball was going in. Like I said, I still believe the lad has some way to go but he is absolutely making the case for his play.

Portsmouth were able to draw the game to 3-1 on an opportunte goal from Belhadj. Opportune I say because the trajectory could’ve easily have carried it over the bar. But it was a result of the one mistake the Arsenal defense made all night as the left Belhadj in the centre of the box where he was able to put an unscathed foot on the ball. Frankly, as easy as it is to blame Almunia, there was nothing he could do.

Spank you very much

Spank you very much

The final nail in the coffin was as clinical a header as you would see. Again, Portsmouth was woeful in clearing the ball in their zone and Arsenal won it back as Nasri intercepted an errant pass. Nasri was allowed to walk into the far right of the box where he lofted a ball that Alexnader Song lept sky high and directed the ball in the net with his head. It was a header as you are taught to do. It had direction, speed and eyes for the net. And it was all fitting that Song’s last league match for the next 3 weeks would result in a goal. He doesn’t score them often but he makes the most of the opportunities he has.  Song is a big reason Arsenal are going on this run.

Alot of the other players also deserve mention and again Abou Diaby put in another performance. His attacking nature was again evident and while he did not score he had a beautiful opportunity that was saved by an amazing reach by Bergovic. Thomas Vermaelen was his normal “hard” self going face to face with Hughes at one point and you just wanted him to deck him. Sagna was amazingly quick for the day and if he just doesn’t out and out beat people with speed better than any right back in the league, I don’t know who does. There were moments where he simply won balls that were closer to the opposition because his speed was so advantageous. And finally I have to say that Aarmond Traore will one day go back to the bench – which is unfortunate because frankly, he has been solid in every one of his starts.  He has pace and strength and when someone can go leg for leg with Gabby Abonglahor (against Villa) that says something. He made one or two bad passes but over all he was solid again. When Clichy and Gibbs return, Arsenal will have 3 solid left backs. Given the injury bug this team always has – thats not a bad thing.

I also want to mention the play of Andrei Arshavin. I don’t know whether to be frustrated with the lad or just accept that this is how he plays. It could be that when Arsenal buy a new striker or one miraculously heals he will be better back on his natural wing. But he is so uninvolved at times I just wonder if this is why Arsene didn’t by him during the summer of 2008 when his stock was so high. Personally, I would switch Eduardo back to the middle and put Arshavin on the wing. When that was done against Hull it changed the dynamic of the game and AA23 was able to penetrate deeper with the ability to take the shot or pass it on to Eduardo. That set more quality chances against Hull than the current formation is doing (AA23 central forward and Eduardo wing). Again who knows, but AA23 has been too quiet. But again maybe thats a good thing because others need to step up.

It was also nice to see the return of Rosicky – TR7 came on briefly for Dudu and had a quality shooting chance that missed the far upper corner by about 6 inches. Let’s hope he can stay healthy. He has an uncanny ability to make passes that just don’t seem there. The match also saw the brief appearance by Craig Eastmond. Many wonder why Wilshere didn’t feature and I think it has to do with the liklihood that he will be loaned out in January. I suspect that he will also play a role in the FA Cup squad as will Fran Merida.

All in all in it was a productive holiday season taking maximum points from all matches. In their last 6 matches they have taken a whopping 16 of 18 points and are clearly in the hunt for the title. There is a string of winnable matches coming up prior to a run of 4 matches at the end of January that see Arsenal play Villa, United, Chelsea and Liverpool. They should concentrate on taking maximum points up until that point and then with returning squad members and possible transfer window purchases coming in be in a good position for making the most of those four fixtures.

A final note – as I was writing this it was announced that Diaby has signed a new long-term deal. The exact details weren’t announced. Funny how that deal comes on the back of three solid performances and past the slew of extensions that were signed in November. With that signing, it seems Arsene has tied up most of his core players through at least 2014. Should they all manage to stay together for that time – it is quite possible that were are on the cusp of a dawn of Arsenal success. Still we have another half a season to play. Let’s see what we do here shall we before we dream of possibilities.

A Little Piece of Pompey Goes A Long Way: Arsenal v Portsmouth, Match Preview

By DaAdminGooner · 30 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 76 Comments »
Let the 2nd half festivities begin

Let the 2nd half festivities begin

When these last two teams met it was in August and Arsenal were starting out the season scoring at will. Portsmouth at the time was in the path of the early season juggernaut and lost 4-1. This time Arsenal comes in winning 4 of 5 of its last matches and in the hunt for the Premier League title sitting just 7 points off of leading Chelsea. Portsmouth meanwhile are fighting for the proverbial lives as they sit clearly on the bottom of the table.

When Pompey visited Arsenal at the Emirates on 22 August Paul Hart was the manager and David James was in goal. No one had an idea then that Portsmouth would be on such a run as to see them trying to stave off relegation. As it is only one team that was in the relegation zone at Christmas ever survived to stay in the first division. Portsmouth are hoping to do just that.

During their last match at home, Avram Grant’s side won against a very wounded Liverpool club.  Winning that match 2-0 Pompey still have the lowest goal total at home this season (9) out of all Premier League Clubs. They face a monumental task in beating Arsenal – their last win was a 5-4 scorcher in 1954.

The arrival of Avram Grant has resulted in a mini-turnaround of sorts. He has seen them double their point total and is pushing his side to play the physical game with Arsenal. Grant may not have watched recent Arsenal matches against Hull, Blackburn and Villa – all sides who vowed to get Physical and all sides who went down with emphatic wins by Arsene Wenger’s side.

But really does the Israeli tactician have much choice. On pure talent alone, even a depleted Arsenal squad are likely to shred Portsmouth. He has to find a way to slow the Gunners down are find himself on the end of a result similar to that of his predecessor.

Arsenal for their own part are unbeaten in their last 5 league matches and are once again in the middle of the title hunt. They posted a 3-0 emphatic win over potential top-four side Aston Villa this past weekend and will be looking to carry that Christmas momentum into this match to keep pace with Chelsea and United.

The Gunners have shown something this season that hasn’t been there in recent years – resiliency. After losing to Chelsea in a gut wrenching 3-0 battle at the Emirates. Almost everyone had written this squad off. The doom mongers (fans and pundits alike) were once again claiming that there really was only a big two and that everyone else including Arsenal was playing for sloppy seconds. But much like the beginning of the season when everyone thought they would be fighting for their big-four lives, the squad came out and quickly and quietly proved everyone wrong.

Arsenal are solidly in the big four with Liverpool being the squad trying to find its big four credentials. And yes, there is still a half a season to go and anything can happen, but the squad has shown that it can perform through adversity. Be it injuries, tough losses, doubters, height deficiencies, tight schedules and rough teams, whatever it has been, Arsenal have found a way to overcome that.

The squad goes into the hostile environment of Fratton Park without its chief playmaker, Cesc Fabregas. He of the brief but lethal visit to the pitch on Sunday where he literally destroyed Aston Villa on his own. It will need a full team effort to beat Pompey. The first half of the Villa game, while controlled by the Gunners saw good opportunities squandered. If Arsenal are going to win without Fabregas, they will need to call on every one to pitch in and do what is necessary to win.

My philosophy is to shoot and shoot often. Forget the pretty, sweet passes in the box. Get Begovic tested and put pressure on him and his defenders to make plays. The likes of Arshavin and Diaby need to be the focal point. Arshavin for his creativity and skill and Diaby for his straightforward attack. His size and speed will surely be an asset in attacking the Pompey back four.

If Arsenal want to stay in contention and continue to show they are the real deal it is these matches that matter most. The wins against the lesser clubs are what is going to add up in the end. Ask Manchester United how it won the title. They could care less about the big four. They won 1 time against a big four squad last season. Yet, their record against the lesser clubs was amazing. Against the big six this season Arsenal are 3-3 with no draws. While they need to claim wins or draws against two of them, they really need to keep the foot on the throats of teams like Pompey. That is what winners do. That is what they must do.

How It Will Play Out:

As mentioned earlier, Avram Grant feels his side aren’t playing with enough grit. He also figures that the weak spot for Arsenal is that they don’t like physical games. As I also mentioned he must not have seen much of Alexander Song, Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas this season. Each of them has played with a physical zeal to make even Sam Allardyce proud. Arsenal must, must must, score early and open up the game. Pompey need points. They need 3 points as much as we do and if the Gunners can open up the score early then the game is Arsenal’s for the taking.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Abou Diaby. Never thought I would be singling out this guy as a stand out player. But his play in the last two weeks has been huge. He has scored goals and he has been a presence on the field. He has also shown some skill moves to set up his fellow team players. In the first meeting against Pompey this season he scored 2 goals in the opening 25 minutes.

Portsmouth: Kanu. With Jamie O’Hara suspended now would be a good time for the former Arsenal man to step up. If Portsmouth are to fight off relegation then they will need him to be Johnny On The Spot this week.

Probable Starting XI:

This could change if any of Pompey's players have left for ACoN

This could change if any of Pompey's players have left for ACoN

Injuries:

Arsenal: Gibbs (foot), Clichy (back), Van Persie (ankle), Bendtner (abdomen), Djourou (knee), Fabregas (hamstring)

Portsmouth: James (leg)

The Joy of Cesc – Arsenal 3 – Aston Villa 0, Match Review

By DaAdminGooner · 28 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 77 Comments »
Let's talk about Cesc baby!

Let's talk about Cesc baby!

Great teams make good teams look average. Make no mistake about Aston Villa are a good team. Out of all the potential big-four crashers they are the most complete team. Solid in defense, good speed on the attack, strong strikers, solid keeper in net and a manager you can respect. However, in a fixture at the Emirates it was the mighty Arsenal who staked a claim not to thier top four aspirations but to their title contention.

Four weeks ago, Chelsea had been annointed by the press as this season’s title winners. They had beaten Arsenal 3-0 at the Emirates but then the whole world turned upside down and here at the end of December Arsenal are 4 points back off the leaders with a game in hand.

This was match that had a lot of Gooners tied up into stitches. Noone really knew what to make of the match. Looking at most of the write ups many of us – me included had Arsenal coming in with a draw. It was safe and given the club’s recent history against Villa – it was a good bet.

Villa had been on a solid run of 4 wins without conceding a goal. Their defense had only given up 14 goals in all matches this season. It was a case of the immovable object meeting the immovable force (or whatever that saying it is). It would just be a matter of who blinked first.

For the opening of the match the game pretty much developed as I thought. Arsenal had the most of the ball and the pressure and were surely up for the day. Villa though were intent to absorb the punch. However it was 3 minutes in when Eduardo had a fabulous opportunity to beat BRad Fridel and unfortunately his bad run of form continued as he squibbed it away. It was a great chance set up by the fine play of one much maligned player – Diaby (I should know – I constantly malign him). He contrlled the ball and turned on the penalty area and laid it off to the Crozillian who struck his shot right at the Villa ‘keeper.

In the 21st minute however, it looked like Villa would go ahead but Richard Dunne looked to be taking the head off of Manuel Almunia with his elbow. While it was typical wobbly play from Almunia the foul was evident and the goal did not stand up to Phil Dowd’s scrutiny.

8 minutes later it was Arsenal’s turn as the trio of Diaby, Denilson, and Sagna set up the play which saw Denilson lay the ball up to Nasri. The frenchman who seems to be getting more solid game to game shot a rocket that deflected off the cross bar. From there on in the play was clearly Arsenal’s. Howvever, if you were Martin O’Neill you would be happy with the play of your team and working on 0-0 draw.

Like the week before this match was a tale of two halves and in the second half the game was all Arsenal.

Immediately into the opening of the second half Arsenal had two very good attempts cleared off the line and Villa’s vaunted defense looked ripe for the taking. Gallas was one the receiving end of an Eduardo header and shot it towards goal with a one-arm save by Fridel and a left foot kick by Cuellar saving the sure fire goal.

Then in un typical Arsene Wenger fashion he made his first substitution before the 60 minute mark. He swapped Denilson for the real captain fantastic – Cesc Fabregas. From the minute he stepped on the pitch the game changed. While Andrei Arshavin would not see a goal today his game elevated as the Spainard imposed his will on the game. Immediately Fabregas linked up with Arshavin who twisted free to shoot a low hard shot into a diving Friedel. Had AA23 lifted the ball slightly it would’ve been the games opening goal.  But even still it signaled the intent of the Arsenal squad.

Going into last week Arsenal had not scored from a FK since mid-season 2007. That all changed off the ankle and foot of Brazillian Denilson last week who’s shot at the 45th minute from the left side of the top of the penalty box. Fast forward to this week. In a spot very like last week and this time the Captain standing over the ball. Fabregas tried to turn Dunne and was brought down for the foul. Then in pure Captain Fabtastic fashion – he shot a curling ball to the upper right corner that had eyes and beat Friedel – who never had a chance on the ball anyway.

Game on.

The game would be put away off of the foot of the Captain again this time on the counter. Traore intercepted a pass from Milner and played the ball up to Walcott on the right. With Fabregas on his side the two used speed to press the defense and finally using his head for the pass – Walcott sent the Captain lose and beat Friedel again. 2-0. However the goal was not without its price. Fabregas came on after a week out with a hamstring injury. By all looks his speed burst may have again aggravated that injury. We don;’t know yet. With his 21 minute pitch visit over Cesc was replaced by Aaaron Ramsey. The game was in hand and the 3 points were tied up.

The game was firmly closed down in injury time when Aston Villa’s defense parted like the red sea for the hard charging Diaby who clocked a shot past the very surprised and probably very pissed Brad Friedel. Diaby was left to run the ball in from the midfield point of the attacking half. He had a solid shot past the keeper and deserved the goal based on his performance during the game.

My foot is better than a Brazillian ankle
My foot is better than a Brazillian ankle

Prior to Cesc’s introduction into the match, Diaby had to have been the man of the match. We’ve all talked at length about how he is best when his game is straight forward and he can press the attack. Whatever Diaby had in his pre-game regimine before these last two matches he should do over and over. Simply put he has been a rock these two matches. He is outpacing opposition defenders. Getting back on the ball when needed and making passes – he is thinking and developing. It’s only two games in a row but I cannot remember Diaby having two solid performances like this strung together. If he does it against Pompey in the midweek tie we will have to ask ourselves if Diaby has finally arrived.

Additionally, I think you cannot pay our back four enough credit for their play since the Chelsea match. They were victimized in that match. While there was some admirable play they seemed wobbly. Since then – they have been absolutely solid only allowing 2 goals in matches against Stoke, Liverpool, Burnley, Hull and Aston Villa. That is a good record for any defense. It looks like from all indications that the defense has learned from its play against Chelsea and is once again solidfying its resolve. Arsenal will never be called a defensive powerhouse. But a defense that locks down, Wayne Rooney, Gabbie Abonglahor and the ilk are a good crew. The best moment of the match today was in the 2nd half when Vermaelen went leg for leg for a ball in the Arsenal end. Neither player would give and inch and Vermaelen crowded the ball first with his feet then with his body resolved not to give the ball to Gabbie. It worked and he drew the FK as well.

Finally, I think I need to add that I am no fan of Manuel Almunia. His positioning on most set pieces is enough to make anyone go through a bottle of tums. However, in the last two weeks he has been solid. Yes, he has some moments of consternation but overall he has played failry well and in what could be called his save of the season he made a wonderful one armed save on a shot by Abonglahor (or was it Carew. Got to look at the film). Regardless it was the kind of save that preserves matches and keeps momentum with his squad. More matches like this will go a long way to lock in his defense’s faith in him. But I am still going to argue we need a good number 1 keeper.

Let’s be honest this match was all about Cesc Fabregas’ brief stint in the lineup and his ability to absolutely change the direction of a match and control play. From the moment he was introduced and the first shot he missed – a lazy shot that signaled his intentions – it was clear the game had changed. There are few players in the EPL that can turn a game like that. I would aruge that Drogba can’t do it. He doesn’t have the finesse he is pure muscle. Right now I can’t think of someone who when in the grove like that can totally dictate the entire flow of the game. Maybe Torres. Ronaldo had it. Henry had it. Catalona had it. Fabregas has it. He was on for about 21 minutes and controlled the game. From commanding the passing to setting up shots and to ultimately making the shots. Fabregas showed his class and he showed again why he is Arsenal’s man. I don;t think there is a fee that could be offered for him, at least not now, that would free him from the club. If Arsenal are on the verge of a sustained run of club greatness it will come in large part from the mastery of the Catalan midfielder. The extent of his injury is unknown. It could be an aggravation of the scar tissue of the original injury or it could be a complete reinjury.

Anyway, we are now 4 points off the lead. We now have to be considered in contention for the title. Chelsea seem wont to blow the title. They are suffering from a rash of draws against lesser competion. It is form like this that loses titles. YOu can beat the big four all you want – if you cannot take care of business against the Birmingham’s of the world you will not win the title. Arsenal have quietly gone about their business. The are following the formula United laid down last season. They weren’t very convincing against the big four but they were more than able to handle the other clubs. Because of this they won the title. If Arsenal are going to win the title – the need to keep this trend of pummeling the lesser opposition.

Next up – Portsmouth (EPL match)

A Christmas Delight – Arsenal v Aston Villa, Match Preview

By DaAdminGooner · 26 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 106 Comments »
Now for the real Christmas Feast

Now for the real Christmas Feast

Let’s get right to it shall we? Aston Villa return to the Emirates where in their meeting last season, they stunned Arsenal with a 2-0 win. That came at the height of their push last season  that only saw them fade away by season’s end. Arsenal will be looking to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself and that they retain a firm grasp on their league position and title aspirations.

Aston Villa are in a run of form that reminds everyone of their success from last season.  The major change from last season is the loss of Gareth Barry to Manchester City and the signing of Richard Dunne to tighten up their defense. And by all indications the Villans got the the better end of the deal.  The Aston Villa defense are by far the tightest in the league this season. They haven’t conceded a goal in their last 4 league matches and have only conceded 14 all season long.

Should Villa beat Arsenal they would complete a rather unlikely quadruple having beaten United, Liverpool and Chelsea already.  Additionally a win places Villa firmly in the hunt for Champion’s League football.  Next to Arsenal they have been the most consistent top squad in the last month. They are grinding out wins. They do not score prolifically but with a defense as tight as they have been – 1 goal leads tend to hold.

Frankly with Liverpool in such a state of decline, City unable to NOT draw matches and Spurs just being Spurs, Aston Villa look to be the more solid contender for a top 4 spot. However, last season when Arsenal looked like they would be on the outside looking in, Villa was in the same spot only to watch their spot fade away and get surpassed by a surging Arsenal.  It remains to be seen if Martin O’Neill has done enough to ensure his squad have the ability to last an entire campaign. If there are any faults with the Villa manager it is constant use of the same squad without any rest. He has great talent on his squad but he rides them to the end and unfortunately they get gased. Gabby Abonglahor looked to be lighting up the league only to, like his team, dry up.

Arsenal while not exactly lighting up the league have been the more consistent of the old guard in the last month or so.  They’ve only dropped two points and continue to do what is necessary to stay in the league hunt – beat the lesser opposition. With Chelsea and United reluctant or unable to lock down their lead, Arsenal continue to apply pressure. Should they both drop points today and Arsenal either draw or win, the pundits will have to give credit to their title credentials.

The thing about this season and this Arsenal squad is that old “on paper” adage they shouldn’t even be winning. Two top-class left backs out, two “strikers” out and essential role players out – the club is relying on spit, grit and a whole lot of ducttape to get it done. They remain in the hunt in my opinion because of the their manager, their talent and pure determination. Even before the injuries the squad was intent on showing up the pundits and stating a claim to the league title. They will need to continue this way even if Arsene dips into the transfer kitty for a new up front attacking threat.

But back to the task at hand.

The line up I propose today is exactly identical to last week’s and I put it out because I think that is just how Arsene is. But if I were the manager I would have Eduardo in the middle with Arshavin on the wing with Nasri (Walcott) would sit. Also it’s still unknown if Fabregas will play today. On Christmas day he was 50:50 for the match . I agree with everyone and let him at least be on the bench as a sub today and keep Diaby in. His play last week was straight forward and it was why he was so successful. I think that is what will be needed to press Villa.  Also likely to be back but not start is Traore.

Again though the up -3 will be the key. Chelsea even thought they lost got lots of shots on goal by attacking the box and getting Friedel moving.  Chelsea lost the game on set- pieces. With Eduardo in the middle it frees up Arshavin to be more creative. Not only is the man a solid scorer but his ability to get people the ball is just as uncanny. Eduardo finally got off the goal schnide and hopefully has found the touch he needs to restore his confidence. But again, this is pure conjecture as I think Arsene will start Walcott on the wing to test the defensive speed of Villa’s back four.

We should also focus on Arsenal’s defending on set pieces, a lot has been made of it by us and by the pundits. I think in the last few weeks – since the Chelsea match Vermaelen and Gallas have done an amazing job of locking down the middle of the Arsenal penalty box. The week point still is the goal keeper and his inability to consistently and confidently play the ball correctly.  With that in mind will be even more of an imperative for everyone back defending to stay on a man.  Arsenal’s clean sheets and set piece defending are going to come more from the defenders than from the goal keeper himself.

How it Should Play Out:

To me this is the match of the weekend. Two good teams, in form and fighting to push United and Chelsea. As Aston Villa don’t score alot I see them playing similarly to Chelsea and trying to absorb the Arsenal attack and only trying to attack on the counter. The thing is – this will be speed on speed. With the exception Mikhail Silvestre and Diaby Arsenal are as quick as Aston Villa. So they will need to defend tightly against the counter. If the game unfolds this way, unlike the Chelsea match Arsenal must take the chances they are presented. Friedel isn’t Given or Howard but he is a good goalie but can be had if he is tested.  That is what Arsenal will and must do to win.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin. Third week in a row and third week we need him to come up big. Which so far has been par for the course for the diminutive Russian. He did not feature in either match against Villa  and his guile will be needed to press such a stingy defense.

Villa: Gabriel Abonglahor. He is the little engine that could for Martin O’Neill. He is quick and cagey. He is what Theo Walcott could be if Theo could combine scoring with his speed. The one knock on Gabbie – he can’t sustain his prowesss for the length of a season.

Possible Starting XI:

Fabregas for Diaby?

Merry Christmas from Da Admin Gooner

By DaAdminGooner · 23 December, 09 · Filed in General · 36 Comments »

Happy Christmas

In the next few days most of us – if not all will be spending time with our families enjoying Christmas dinners and the like or we will be wondering we’re has everyone gone and why is noone writing anything. But in the spirit of the season I would like to extend a very special Christmas thanks to all of you the readers of You Are My Arsenal.

In the six months since we launched I believe we have developed in to an excellent forum for all sorts of discussion around our beloved Arsenal.  SOme of us haven’t liked what others have said and others have found what I have written to be “tabloidish” at atimes. But all in all we have a respectful (to a degree) discourse with each other and it has made writing this blog more enjoyable than I could’ve imagined. Really.

We’re heading into the new year watching our team do its annual fits of convulsions as it strives for silverware. I am the optimist and think there i still something to be had by this squad especially if Arsene delivers in January. At YAMA I am busy looking for new content ideas to make the site more robust for all of you. IN the coming months I am going to launch the Gooner Store – YAMA’s online store. I had wanted it opened after Thanksgiving but problems with software and contracts have delayed that. I am thinking about opening a forum for us to conduct non blog related subjects and carry and ongoing dialogue. I remember at AA reading how people were tired of scrolling down to find the next topic.  And finally in 2010 I hope to launch the YAMA podcast. I’ve been in touch with some excellent Arsenal and EPL bloggers and am formulating an idea.

When I started YAMA, I wanted this site to be more than what AA offered. Not as a knock to AA. It has its niche and I wanted YAMA to more than that. You guys have really made doing that enjoyable.

So there will be more to come in 2010. Heck there is still a very important fixture in 2009 – a winnable one. It will be hard but I think we won’t be in it. Of course my usual pre game review will be up – likely Friday evening after every one has succumbed to their tryptophan comas.

But just for conversation sakes some of the headlines floating out there are:

1. Diouf gets granted his UK work permit – is he the answer to United’s woes.

2. Will Arsene Wenger sign the striker we think he needs or will he find a 5′ 8″ dynamo that doesn’t answer our lack of height.

3. Arsene Wenger – a man who understands clubs history has asked 1970 Captain Frank McClintock to appear before the opening of the Villa match. McClintock was the Captain of the 1970/71 double winning side and will be 70 years old on 28 Dec. He appeared in 403 matches.

4. With the turmoil at City could Shay Given really be looking to get out? If so would you take him? Heck since it looks like Everton won’t have any money coming in from Europe would you make a play for Tim Howard – knowing that Everton need money.

5. Kolo Toure looks like he wants to leave City. If that is the case is this likely the most brilliant move by Arsene? He seems to have an uncanny knack of knowing when players need to move on. He also seems to know when certain players are ready to step up (e.g. Song) but to be fair he also has a blind side to some players out of pure loyalty when it really does look like they have lost it.

6. Looks like Melo is already worn out at Juve – he hasn’t been great since his move from Fiorentina? What do you think? Make a play?

7. Arsene is wary of the ACoN affect on his squad – he is happy that at least this year its only two players and he feels that the squad is prepared to cover their loss. We can only hope that at least Cameroon goes out early.

8. Really interesting is that our league rival Chelsea may have more woes added to their current run of form. Nicholas Anelka is currently slated to miss the next two games for the Blues. There is the possibility he could actually miss more. I have always thought that the potency of Chelsea lie when they have both Anelka and Drogba on the attack. You can’t focus on one player. And given the strengths of both inevitably one is going to get you. Should Chelsea have an extended run without Anelka or Drogba (ACoN) they are going to falter. Yes they will likely buy someone but that impact isn’t going to be immediate. This is why I like where Arsenal are right now in the standings. If we win or draw against Villa and win the game in hand against Bolton we will be  3-4 points off Chelsea going into January. And up until the end of the month we have a favorable run of can-win matches.  January will decide the EPL title winner I think.

9. Have you heard an EPL manager was found outside a brothel by the Sun. When he was confronted he siad he knew it was a brothel. UK privacy laws forbid the Sun from revealing who it was. I am thinking it is Harry Redknapp.

10  I think if Wilshere goes out on loan – send him the Newcastle. Yeah I know its an EPL team but they are playing good football in the Championship. It will be good for Jack to be in a team that is competing to win a league title and in fairness they are as close to an EPL team in the Championship as they can get.

11. Finally, I am up for desiging a YAMA T Shirt but as I am not the most witty or pithy writer I am looking for suggestions for a slogan to have on it. Let me know what you think our slogan should be. The winner – I will pay for their shirt myself.  But the shirt will pay homage to all the active readers and writers.

In closing guys Happy Christmas, Chanukkah, Kwanza or ChrismaHanuKwanzaKah. – You Gooners are the best

Yes, It Is A Must Win Match. Arsenal v Hull City, Match Preview

Its the Tan Man v the Red and White Army

Its the Tan Man v the Red and White Army

It’s hard to say that a match in December is a must win. But when Hull City visit the Emirates this Saturday anything less than a win will once again create that doubt that Arsenal can sustain a title challenge this year.

Last season when the well tanned man, Phil Brown brought his newly promoted Hull City to the Emirates they were the league darlings having worked their way up to the top of the league. Even more stunningly they pulled off a 2-1 defeat of the Gunners and had Arsene Wenger’s men on the path to fighting for the Champion’s League lives.

Forward to this season and the story is all together different. While Arsenal are having their difficulties, they look to be better equipped to stay in the league’s elite tier. Hull haven’t seen the top 10 since they were there on Day 1 of the season. Hull are fighting for their Premiership lives at this point with only 1 point keeping them out of the relegation zone.  However, gaining a even point seems a hard task for the Tigers with their key player Jimmy Bullard off due to a knee injury.

Arsenal though are currently in their own rut. The injuries have piled up and scoring has dried up. Prior the injury suffered by Robin Van Persie, the Gunners were scoring on an average of 3.5 goals per match. Since his injury the gunners have managed to average 1.5 games per match. That’s in all competitions folks. If you look at the 5 league games since he has been gone – Arsenal have only managed 5 goals in 5 matches.

In order to keep the pressure on United and Chelsea (and to keep Spurs and Villa in their rightful place – beneath us in the table) Arsenal will need to come out and break Hull’s back early. And breaking their back means two goals not one.  The simple fact of the matter is even with 1 goal leads Arsenal are not safe. Manuel Almunia is an absolute wreck and cannot seem to do whatever it takes to keep the ball out of the net.  While there are keepers aplenty stopping penalty shots, Manuel couldn’t even manage that. In fairness though, fans I think believe PKs are a gimmie and saves are a bonus. So I can’t completely fault him. But the fact remains, he looks tenative playing any ball in the middle of the box. On set pieces he is woeful – he hardly attacks the ball and most times when he does he does poorly and it winds up on the opposition’s foot and likely in the back of the net. Simply put, if Arsenal are going to sustain their title challenge – Almunia either needs a “Come to Jens” moment or Arsene Wenger needs to give Fabianski a run out. (We bought the chest cold before Arsene).

In the draw with Burnley, one of the reasons the attack got stifled was the lack of our “quaterback.” At the start of the 2nd half, lone goal scorer Cesc Fabregas was taken off the field with a thigh injury. When Ramsey comes in the interlinking play is off. I likened to what happens when an NFL team has to bring in a 2nd string QB in the middle of a game. All week leading up to the match the 1st string QB gets all the reps with the first team. The backups all play on the squibb team. The rythm of the attack was completely thrown off when Fabs went out. Not so much I think (its my opinion) because Ramsey is unskilled – I think it had more to do working with the first team in that position. And frankly he seemed more keen for the attack and if that was the case, Nasri should’ve been rotated back as the playmaker.

Fabregas won’t be around for this match again. Which only means that spitgate could happen again – if they win. Who Arsene puts in will say alot. I have to go with my gut and it tells me our mid-field will be made up of Song, Diaby, and Denilson. As much as I’d like to see Ramsey get a runout, I just don’t see it happening. It isn’t Arsene’s style.  So if anything our midfield could be as weak as our keeper which worries me.

But remember this first team squad of Brown’s is the same squad that faced off against the young guns in last seasons Carling Cup and LOST. Now maybe Arsene should give the young guns another run out. Not likely but the point is we SHOULD be able to take care of the business. In 12 matches at the Emirates the Gunners Arsenal are the winners of 10. Each by a two goal margin. Their opponent is ripe for the taking, Hull has only won 1 of their last 22 Premier League away games and are still to win on the road this season.

How The Match Should Play Out:
Last week saw Arsenal score inside of 15 minutes for the first time this season. They will need to build on this and add a 2nd goal not too long after. If they wind up with a draw going into the half – you have to wonder if Arsene’s blow-dryer speech against Liverpool was a 1 and done and quickly left the lads mind. Even this depleted Arsenal side should provide too much pace for the Hull defense. The 4-3-3 will likely resemble a 4-5-1 with Nasri and Walcott on the wings. These two are needed and needed to perform if they want to win this match.

Probable Starting XIs:

I did say they were probable right?

I did say they were probable right?

Injuries:Arsenal: Bendtner (hernia), Clichy (back), Djourou (knee), Fabregas (hamstring), Gibbs (foot), Rosicky (groin), Traore (hamstring), van Persie (ankle)

Hull: Bullard (knee) Ashbee (knee)

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin. Again the dimunitive Russian needs to fill the scoring void.l Him and Fabregas have been the only Gunners to net in the last 3 games. He has risen to the challenge each time and needs to get back into it. He has all the qualities of Champion and those need to be on display.

Hull: Jozy Altidore. It’s rare to say watch the sub but as an American I take a sense of pride in watching this kid play. Kudos to him for making it on to a EPL roster even if it is Hull. I don’t want him to score but it will be nice to see him on the Emriates pitch.

Tis the Season. . . For Consistency – Arsenal v Burnley, Match Preview

By DaAdminGooner · 16 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 126 Comments »
It's another David versus Goliath - sort of.

It's another David versus Goliath - sort of.

The next coming days and weeks are really where the EPL table starts to get a little clearer. With no international breaks or cup ties to distract teams, the EPL begins to double up on its fun and start its midweek match rotation through the Christmas season. Coming off an impressive come from behind win at Anfield, Arsenal are on the road once again, travelling to Turf Mor home of the Burnley Clarets.

The Clarets are no strangers to Arsenal or Arsenal fans. It was Championship side Burnley who had the honour of vanquishing the young guns last season in the Carling Cup semi-final. The same Burnley who also took Chelsea’s scalp last year and United and Everton’s this year. They also did a fairly decent number to Manchester City coming back from a 3 goal deficit to earn a valuable away point.  So any Arsenal fan expecting a pushover team could be in for surprise to a very well coached side try and play some open flowing ball with Arsenal.

But this is an Arsenal squad that is once again inthe title hunt. A fort night ago you’d be hard pressed to find anyone outside your rabid Gooners who would put Arsenal in the title hunt. The red and white army had suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat to Chelsea to move them 11 points behind the league leaders. All the prognisticators were annointing Chelsea the defacto champions and Arsenal would be struggling for its Champion’s League life.

A funny thing happened however, the top 7 teams with the exception of two sides, were dropping starting to have their own issues and not make any movement in the league. The two sides who were gaining points – Aston Villa and . . . that’s right Arsenal. Out of all the clubs figuring for a CL spot only Villa and Arsenal have been the models of consistency winning both their league matches. Actually Villa won again this Tuesday and until the Burnley match is played they sit 1 point over Arsenal in the table.

Arsenal are going to need to maintain that consistency and work to gain maximum points over Burnley and Hull prior to meeting for the annual Boxing day match against Villa. With a good portion of the squad on the trainer’s table and another portion coming off – the Gunners need to build some momentum in order to push Chelsea and United and to some extent Villa. The next 3 weeks to the end of January, beginning of February will be crucial. With beatable sides set up for them, Arsenal will need to get as many points as possible before they have a run against Villa, Chelsea, United and Liverpool back to back to back to back.

The opponent they face this week is fesity and has played very well on their home turf. They’ve already beaten United and Everton there and are relishing the chance to take it to the Gunners.  However, there are weak points and Arsene’s lads will need to exploit them whenever possible.

The primary weak point is a rather slow back 4.  They trudge more than run. If Arsenal can press the attack and unlock them early, it could be a long day for Claret ‘keeper Jensen. Andrei Arshavin at 5’7″ is showing everyone that size doesn’t matter when it comes to a striker – what matters – at least to him – is work rate, skill and magical way to score. He’s got a hurt foot right now but according to Arsene – he absolutely demanded to play in this match. If it’s true the legend of Andrei Gunner will only grow – especially if he scores again from the central role.

Thomas Vermaelen will be called on to lock down another attacking threat this time – forward Steven Fletcher. Fletcher has had impressive season with 8 goals in all competitions.  Tommy Gunn has had impressive start to his Arsenal career and with the exception of the OG against Chelsea, he has arguably given more than we got him for.  If plays this way for the whole season with his new best friend – things look very good for Arsenal.

Again though the real weak spot won’t be the lack of size up front but the lack of heart in the back. Manuel Almunia is the shadow of a number goalie and continues to make blunder after blunder. Whether or not Lucas was offside in the match against Liverpool, Almunia totally misplayed the ball.  Manny needs to start showing he deserves the blind faith Arsene has in him. And he does. Arsene lept to his defence in the Tuesday press conference saying in a review of the match tape the ball actually comes off of Lucas who is behind Almunia. AW says he has faith in Manny and that he will play against the Clarets. You have to wonder now – what does Manny have on our fearless leader.

Finally, we also need other players to start stepping up. Ever since the loss of Van PErsie some players have gone into shells. While Fabregas hasn’t gotten awful he hasn’t been as strong or assertive in the midfield as he was previously this season. If the Gunners are going to do anything in the league, the will need him to step it up. Same for Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri. While Nasri is starting to come along, Theo has been a disappointment so far this season. He has the pace but his finishing skills need to be refined. Theo needs to step up and clearly show his fortitude or step aside for someone else. Others like Vela and Eduardo also need to step it up.

Burnley is the perfect place to begin a solid run and build a level of consistency.  Rafa said that last Sunday was the beginning of the season for them – well it may have been for Arsenal too. A win at Turf Mor and the season is in full swing with glory in site.

How It Should Play Out:

This match should play out like most matches have. Expect Burnley to come out flying. They have a raucus home crowd and having defeated other big teams will be looking to do the same to Arsenal. I’d rather see Arsenal absorb that early pressure let it dwindle down and then move in to kill. Get a goal within the first 25 minutes and set the tone from there on in. Once Arsenal get that first goal and open up the game, they can user their passing and speed to unlock the Burnley back four.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Manuel Almunia. He absolultely needs a clean sheet. He also needs to show that he can be steady and not the flopping git he was on Sunday. A clean sheet won’t silence all of us calling for his head but at least it will reassure us that the team can survive somewhat until a real keeper is brought in.

Burnley: Steven Fletcher. He’s been part of the giant killing brigade and his goal against United showed his class. He will need to come up big if Burnley are to beat Arsenal.

Probable Starting XIs:

Christmas Early. Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1 Match Review

By DaAdminGooner · 14 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 106 Comments »
Let them . . . die!!!

Let them . . . die!!!

Winners win matches they have no business winning. How many times have we heard that? How many times have we said that about teams who aren’t our favourite? Well, on a day they clearly did not have their best stuff, Arsenal did something at Anfield they had not done since October 2003 – they won.

Forget what you will about Liverpool’s nosedive into the mid-table, but look at an Arsenal squad that is struggling to contend with the amount of injuries that are racking up. Look at an Arsenal side that does not have a true central attacker and that willing itself forward in spite of the pundits and naysayers.

This match was definitely a tale of two halves. In the first Arsenal had no business even being on the pitch. Liverpool in pure desperation mode were the better team. They closed down any Arsenal player with the ball and Mascherano was doing a yeomans job clogging up the midfield. Captain Cesc Fabregas the on field general was a non-factor – oh hell who we kidding the whole team was a non-factor. But for 40 minutes Arsenal still found themselves in a 0-0 draw.

That was until Steven Gerrard did a dancing pirroette and got the call some 20 or so yards outside the penalty box. On first play Almunia punches the ball to have it not cleared out effectively and have the ball wind at Dirk Kuyt’s feet. And even though he nearly whiffed – Kuyt was able to toe the ball past Almunia and a very active William Gallas. Upon further review it was clear Pool were offsides but that doesn’t excuse the poor clearing attempt by Almunia.

Going into half time you could forgive Arsenal fans if they were screaming collectively at their team, their keeper and their manager. Nothing was there. However, what can only be called an un-Arsene like moment, the Arsenal manager completely ripped into his squad telling them according to Cesc Fabregas “You don’t deserve to wear the Arsenal shirt.” To be honest he was right. There was no heart in the first half.  Whether it was a stronger effort by Liverpool putting our players off, Arsenal were not crisp nor were they decisive in their play. Arsene was right in his assessment.  Now, if Arsenal go on an extended run and do something this year we have to ask ourselves if that dressing down was a the coming of age moment for the squad.

If you came into watch the match in the second half you could be forgiven if you wondered how Arsenal were behind 1-0. They came out with more purpose. They were effectively holding the midfield and shutting down the Liverpool play. It was as if what ever was bugging Arsenal in the first half jumped over to Liverpool. Finally at the 50 minute mark – Arsenal got on the board.

The goal came not from the foot of an Arsenal player but on the foot of weak defending Glen Johnson. Leaving  Nasri alone in the box the Frenchman attempted a cross to Theo Walcott. Johnson clearly out of position had the ball come off his foot after a Carragher deflection. From their on in the home side were beaten. They clearly looked like a side lacking any confidence. Arsenal had all the play. They had the swerve that Liverpool had in the beginning.

And as if to remove any doubt 6 minutes later in what is becoming a common theme, Andrei Arshavin completely owned Glen Johnson. Receving the cross off of Theo Walcott’s head, the diminutive Russian made Liverpool pay for not attacking the ball. The marvel of the goal isn’t that he scored again at Anfield, it’s that he rocketed it past Reina while falling away from the ball. And if Wenger is to be believed, Arshavin has had pain in the scoring foot all week. The man is quickly becoming to Liverpool what Didier Drogba is to us – a royal pain in the Ass.

For the next 30 minutes Liverpool couldn’t muster a successful attack. They were muted out on every play or continually offsides. Whatever the reason, Arsenal turned it around and now it is Liverpool who have to spend the rest of the season fighting for the Champion’s League lives.

Given all that occured this weekend, Spurs losing, Chelsea drawing, United losing, City drawing (again), Arsenal fans knew that we were in prime position to do something. However, given recent experience the general feeling was we wouldn’t. At the start of this season we didn’t know what to make of this team. Not a lot changed form a squad that struggled for the first half and poured it on from the second half of the 08/09 season.

What is different then is that even with all the crap going on with the team, from injuries, diving inquiries, board room struggles, etc, this team is proving doubters wrong. Whether it amounts to something remains to be seen. All I know is I am going to enjoy the ride and see where it takes me.

Some things to discuss though:

Manuel Almunia.

I am not a manger. But I don’t think it takes one to see that Manuel Almunia is done. For whatever reason the Spaniard hasn’t had even medium stuff. He is too glued to his line, he punches the ball ineffectively, and does not really do a sound job of commanding his defense. If it were not for his defense Liverpool would’ve tested him and who knows what would have happened.

Arsene has to see this. He has to know. He pulled Lehmann for lesser crap. If he isn’t going to buy a goalie he has to at least give Fabianski a run out to press the “1st team keeper.” Manuel Almunia isn’t our best option at goal. I would be hard pressed to say he is Notts County’s best option in goal.

Steven Gerrard.

Is an absolute disgrace. Has his game deteriorated so much that he has to dive more times than a Chinese diver in the Olympics? Lets look at the pfoul that got Liverpool on the board. Denilson and Stevie G go for the ball together, Denilson, basically hips him out of the way, and Gerrard buckles over wincing in pain and holding his knee. Thats right holding his knee. If you look at it again nothing of Denilson’s body hits Gerrards knee. In fact all Denilson manages to do is hit Gerrard’s stomach with his ass.  For all the scouser cries that Webb called a horrible game – they miss the fact that Gerro absolutely was flopping more than a fish on a boat.

His antics are an absolute disgrace for such a storried franchise. I really feel the reason that Webb didn’t call the penalty on Gallas was because of Gerrard’s constant diving. It is the old case of the boy who cried wolf too many times. To add to his insult his constant attempt to try and referree the match by crying to Webb every time he went down. Sorry Gerro you’ve been found out.

So DAG what are you trying to say?

Have I ranted enough for you? Have I waived the banner of Arsene Wenger enough? Look, there are still issues the biggest of which is our goalie closely followed by the need for a striker. But two weeks ago everyone said Chelsea were about to run away with the league but as of today the table (which does not lie) puts us 6 points behind the leaders with a game in hand and firmly in the title race.

How we finish the title race depends largely on what we do in January. If we buy a quality striker who can compliment our attack I like our chances to continue to push United and Chelsea. And to conclude – it is NOT what you do against Chelsea or United that will dictate who wins the league. It is what you do against the likes of Burnley, Hull, and the rest of the table that will win you the championship. Just ask United (1W 3L 2D against the big 4 last season).

It’s All Mental, Liverpool vs Arsenal, Match Peview

By DaAdminGooner · 12 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 197 Comments »
Who's kids are better

Meaningful Football Once Again

With a fixture that hasn’t had a scoreless draw in 28 meetings over 10 years, the Liverpool v Arsenal match is one supporters of each squad always look forward to. And why not, the last time these two teams met supporters from both sides were treated to either a scoring masterclass or a dreadful defencive performance – depending on your perspective. When Arsnal and Liverpool met at Anfield this season both sides are hoping that only one of them has a similar form.

With either team right now, each one is dealing with its own mental frailties, for Arsenal we are all well aware of the injuries and the effects they have had on the squad. If Arsenal are to proceed in their hunt for the EPL title, they will need to get over whatever mental hurdles they have and buck up until Arsene has a chance to bring in fresh players in January.

For Liverpool their mental block deals around a long run of poor performance. Whatever the reason, Rafa Benitez’s side have not looked like the squad that pressed Manchester United for the title last season. As a matter of fact they’ve recently looked more like a squad trying to stave off relegation. What all this is attributed to is anyone’s guess? But suffice it to say, Liverpool are clearly out of the EPL title hunt (though Scousers won’t admit it) and out of the Champion’s League (the ramifications of which may not be felt until next year).

At the start of the season all the pundits were saying it would be Arsenal struggling to get a top 4 spot. However right now it is the merseyside giants who are on the outside looking in. And while the road is long ahead, the journey will be frought for both squads.

Liverpool are in a an absolute must win situation. There is no wiggle room for a draw or a loss. A loss – and Rafa Benitez may finally have seen his last days at Anfield. Should ‘Pool draw, the din for changes at Anfield will likely grow. In fairness as an outside observer the blame can only be partially Rafa’s. For him it is his dodgy transfer policy that hasn’t brought in a suitable backup for Fernando Torres so that while he was injured they wouldn’t lose a step. Additionally, you have to question letting go their midfield maestro, Xabi Alonso. Say what you will about Gerrard but it was Alonso who created a lot of the chances that Liverpool got. The lack of scoring Pool has shown this season can be directly attributed to that. But if Rafa is to blame for that – then Hicks and Gillette are to blame for shackling the club with so much debt that Rafa can’t do anything.  If Gooners need an example of why I am happy our club is run the way it is – they need look no further then Liverpool. It is a model of what can go wrong if you are not prudent in you financial abilities. Should the club finish out of the big four and Champion’s League football – Pool fans should watch out – the club will be worse than it is now.

Liverpool fans will take heart that Torres and Gerrard seem to be getting back to health and that midfield acquisition Aquilani looks like he is also coming of form back. Though I would remain tepid on Torres. Yes, even hurt he is a fantastic striker but the injury he has been struggling with is a groin injury that is bad enough that surgery will be needed to ultimately fix it. The Spanish FA would like him to do it sooner rather than later ahead of the World Cup. But his club are resistant beacuse without even an injured Torres they have shown themselves to be toothless.

Dirk Kuyt who is having an off year should feature in spite of this seasons’ deficiencies. The games he has managed to show up for are the big ones like wins over Everton and Manchester United. And he has had some success against Arsenal in the past, though he did look mediocre against our young guns in the Carling Cup.

The interesting thing about this years fixture is that there is very little change in the squads from last season. For Liverpool the biggest change is the loss of the Alonso. For Arsenal last season saw a 50% Kolo Toure and the ancient Mikhail Silvestre anchor the centre of the Arsenal defence.  This season we should be tighter back there with the tandem of Gallas and Vermaelen in front of the ‘keeper.  Additionally, Arsenal will start someone other than Nicky B in the front. Last season he started the match but overall was a non-factor missing more than hitting. So whomever starts in his place should hopefully be better. The point is both squads that take the field tomorrow are only slightly different  than the one who faced each other in the 4-4 slug fest last season:

Pool’s Lineup at Anfield Last Season:

Reina

Arbeola Aurelio Agger Caragher
Mascerherano Alonso Bnayoun Kuyt
Rierra Torres

Al Zhar on for Kuyt

The Arsenal linup for last season at Anfield:

Fabianski
Sagna Toure Silvestre Gibbs
Fabregas Song Denilson
Arhsavin Bendtner Nasri

Walcott for Denilson, Diaby for Nicky B

So what’s the point? The match could take on the same tenor as last season but for Arsenal we are much improved at the CB position. Though we could all argue that none of our ’keeper choices inspires much confidence. So how this game plays out is really is a mystery?

For Arsenal the mental hurdle is getting over the perceived lack of size and the recent scoring drought they had gone through. Though none of the pundits point out that the lack of scoring has mostly come with the kids and not with its senior squad.  For Arsenal a loss would likely make the league title a distant chance, a draw keeps them in the top 4 but a closer target for the likes of VIlla, Spurs and City. A win and the Gunners can keep pressure on United and to some extent Chelsea.

Arsene has to play Arshavin up front again. He showed last week against a very physical stoke that he can overwhelem a squad with his ability. In that match he created 3 solid scoring chances converting on a a fourth. He was deceptive by sitting back and forcing the defenders up to him only to out hustle them to the ball and in some cases out muscle them. Noone should doubt AA23 for his size is very strong – especially down low. In last week’s Stoke match to set up the Ramsey score, he was going down with the ball at his feet and still managed to get it to Ramsey who rocketed the goal in.

Liverpool are not a squad that are going to out muscle us. They do not play the Chelsea way and even if they could, it is not Rafa’s style. In some way he plays a flowing attack football much like our own style that should benefit Arsenal. Like Arsenal, Pool have always done well against European competition in the CL only to lose to English clubs. So the style of game should look very familiar to fans of European football. It will be wide open and will be more about the squad that capitalize on its chances than it will be about people out muscling each other for the ball.

Arsenal will be anchored in the middle by Alexander Song and Cesc Fabregas. Fabregas for the attack and Song for the holding role. Song to me is this season’s star. It would be easy to pick Cesc or RvP, but after last season and the summer transfer window when a holding midfielder did not come in, Gooners were openly worried that we would be weak there. Song has gone to show that Wenger knows what he has in terms of talent. Song is everywhere on the pitch. Against Chelsea he successfully contained their midfield. Shackling them at every opportunity. It was on the wing where Arsenal lost that match not in the midfield. Song should be more than capable of handling even Aquilani.

Vermaelen and Gallas have shown themselves to be a solid defencive pairing. Game after game they continue to impress with their ability to shut down the opposition attack (too bad our keeper doesn’t know how).  Even after they make mistakes, ala Chelsea, they have come back and shown performances like Stoke where no header, no play in the middle or around the box had any chance for success.  They will need to continue that form and growth process  if Arsenal are going to continue to push for silverware.

For what it’s worth I think Arsenal match up as we currently are against even a healthy Liverpool Squad. Against a half fit Pool Arsenal would have a clear advantage – even with RvP and Nicky B at the doctors. As it is, it is very hard to call this match because I am not sure which squad will show up for either side.

How the Match Should Play:
To me each team is a mirror of each with the roles from last season reversed. Last season it was Arsenal  that had to go on an extended run to fight for its CL spot and hope that everyone above it went on a run of bad form. Liverpool need that now and will be looking to make this match the start of the turnaround. Arsenal are looking to continue an upward press.  With such desperation at Anfield, Arsenal will need to weather the first 15-20 minutes of pressure. If it were me I would keep the wings back for a bit until we were sure of the Pool attack plan. Once we have snuffed it out then we can press forward. Better to have 6 attacking then 8 and run the risk of giving up the early goal. Finally, put the ball at Arshavin’s feet around the box. He has shown what he can do against Pool’s defense and Reina.  It will be an open affair that is for sure and a style of play that Arsenal should like and thrive in.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin. Back to scene of last seasons amazing show. In only his second month with the team, he showed why there was so much interest in him. He is one of the best when on his game. As the center of the Arsenal attack this weekend it will fall to him again to be the tip on the Arsenal attack. Again, since he has been the most vocal player about the club’s form he will need to show that he can continue to deliver.

Liverpool: Fernando Torres. Arguably the best striker in the world when he is healthy. But how healthy is he? If Liverpool want to  mount a challenge for their top 4 spot they will need him. If his injury is still nagging him then he may not be as effective but even still, Vermaelen should lock him up like he has Wayne Rooney.

Dear Santa, All I Want For Christmas is a Big Ass Striker

By DaAdminGooner · 8 December, 09 · Filed in Players · 130 Comments »

Dear Santa,

I can’t thank you enough for giving us the early gift of a win over Stoke. Yeah, I know it was only Stoke but our guys haven’t been doing to well and what with all the injuries we’ve had, wins didn’t seem to be there. So thanks. Also thanks for letting Andrei find his scoring touch. He was the best present you gave us last year and unfortunately whether its the English weather or his Russian wife beating him up for his antiquated thinking he just hasn’t delivered all that much.

All of us Gooners would also like to thank you for letting us qualify for the Champion’s League early. We don’t need any more injuries to our first team players so they definitely need the rest.

But the REAL reason I am writing is what I want this year. As you may or may not know, we’re having an injury crisis of sorts down here in London. The thing is we’ve got some tremendous talent on our side but with all the injuries we’re lacking in height and strikers. We really need someone who can come in and be a presence up front because right now the midget brigade isn’t going to cut it until April.

So I was wondering if you could possibly send us one (I’m not greedy) of the following strikers:

Edin Dzeko

67848_1_dzeko

Edin is current at Vfl Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.

He’s 23 years old

He stands at 6 ft 3 in

Recently he was one of the 30 players nominated for the Ballon d’Or

In 74 appearance for Vfl Wolfsburg he has scored 40 goals He already has 6 for his 2009/2010 Bundesliga campaign. He ended his 2008/2009 campaign  with 26 goals and 10 assists in 32 league matches. And in the UEFA cup he had 4 goals in 8 matches. Finally, in 23 appearances for his national side, Bosnia Herzegovina he has 14 goals in 23 appearances. Unfortunately he is cup tied.

Santa he is big, quick and young AND he can score. All things our manager Arsene Wenger (you may have heard of him) likes. We’d REALLY like him ALOT.

Gianpaolo Pazzini:

1197631476812_pazzini-1

Gizzi is only 25 years old and currently playing for Serie A side Sampdoria after spending 3 seasons at Fiorentina.

He is only 5 ft 11 in tall but hey he is bigger than anything else we got.

He holds the record for the first goal and first hat-trick scored at the new Wembley Stadium having scored in a friendly against the England U-21 squad. He made his first appearance with the Italian senior squad this year and has 1 goal in 5 appearances.

In his first two seasons at Sampdoria he has19 goals in 32 appearances. In fact 8 of those have only come in the 15 matches played so far in the 2009/2010 campaign. In 2008/2009 he scored 11 goals in 18 matches played for Sampdoria. He has been especially prolific in the Coppa Italia with 2 goals in 1 appearance this season and has 4 goals  in 4 appearances last season. And he is NOT Cup Tied.

He is avirtual unknown to a lot of people outside of the EPL except for Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea( but Santa they already have too many toys) and as such I don’t think we’d have to pay too much for him.

Gizzi scores almost every time he has the ball. Granted its not against the EPL tough guys but it is in the Serie A which is no light weight league either.

Oscar Cardozo

SOCCER/

Oscar plays for the Portguese Liga side Sport Lisboa e Benfica where he has been since 2007. Before playing for Benfica he played in Paraguay for Newell’s Old Boys.

He is 26 years old (ancient by our club standards)

He stands at 6 ft 4.5 in tall (a giant amongst our team)

Cardozo might be a little bit more expensive since he was Benfica’s second biggest signing at 11 million Euros.  In all his time, 65 apperances he has scored 44 goals. So far in 11 games for the Portugese side he has 14 goals.  He has two hat-tricks already in his league and a Brace  against Everton in the Europa Cup. He scored the brace within two minutes.  His current league scoring ratiohas him leading the league in scoring by a whopping 6 goal difference from the next scorer.

Carlton Cole:carlton-cole2-415x448

We know Carlton really well. He bullies around our smaller players from time to time on the field. And we like him. Unfortunately he is injured right now. But that doesn’t diminish the impact he could have if we got him.

He currently plays for West Ham but came from Chelsea which would be a bonus in twisting the screw.

He is 26 and stands 6 ft 3in tall.

Since joining West Ham in 2006 he has scored 23 goals in 88 appearances. Yeah not as good as the others but imagine if he were playing on a team that could feed him the ball regularly.

He has been so strong this year that Fabio Capello finally handed him his senior international debut this season.

Dieumerci Mbokani

SOCCER-BELGIUM/

We really only just met this guy and he had a croker of a shot go off the cross bar against us. But from what I hear Arsene has been watching him so if he has been watching him maybe you could just put him under the tree.

Currently plays for Standard Liege

He is 24 years old and stands at 6 ft 1 in.

And in 61 appearances for Standard he has 32 goals. Not too bad. Oh and he’s African which is something Arsene also likes.

Marouane Chamakh

MarouaneChamakh_280_750591aThis is a gift we have wanted for a long time and we almost got it but no deal could be made.

Marouane plays for Ligue 1 side Bordeaux

He is 25 years old and stands at 6 ft 2 in.

He is versatile player and can play as a Striker, attacking midfielder and Winger. Given our history of injuries having someone that flexible can come in hand. Since joining Bourdeaux in 2002 he has scored 50 goals in 204 appearances. His best year was 13 goals in in 34 appearances in 2008/2009. So far for this season the Moroccan born star has 4 goals in 10 appearances.

He is a star on the rise but he is cup tied and frankly we could get him for free in the summer. So if we don’t get him we won’t be that sad – so long as we get one of the others.

Mario Balotelli:

balotelli

Santa we know that this guy isn’t finished and could require some work but Arsene does have a way of getting the best out of players and getting them to play within their talents.

Super Mario has he has been called is only 19 years old and stands at 6 ft 2.5 in.

The unfortunate thing is that he plays for Inter Milan managed by the perpetual naughty guy, Jose Mourhino. Considering the relationship between him and Arsene it might not happen but if you make it happen, we won’t be unhappy.

Balotelli has unfulfilled potential and unfortunately it may be of his own doing since he has had discipline problems of late. He has not trained as hard as some of his teammates and has drawn the ire of the Special One. If you do give him to us we understand that Arsene will have his hands full with either a budding brat or a budding star. Either way he has a lot of talent and could wind up under someone’s tree. I’d prefer it to be ours rather than Chelsea’s.

Krkic Bojan

barca_20992t

A lot of Gooners like this kid because of is potential Santa I am not one of them. For one reason only – do we really need another player under 5 ft 8 in.

Sure he plays at Barcalona in a system similar to ours and is coached supposedly by the heir apparent.

He is only 19 and only stands a whopping 5 ft 7 in tall. Not what we need to kill off the likes of Didier Drogba.

Don’t get me wrong Santa. I would be grateful if we got him. He is very talented. But their isn’t much history to gauge so far how he would fare. He has 13 goals in 59 appearances for Barca. Other than that we don’t have much to go on with him. But if he were the gift we got, we are sure, Arsene and crew would make the most of his talents.

But like I said I still think he would be too small.

Santa we really really really need a new striker. Someone with size, skill and speed. Anyone one of these would be so AWESOME in a nice red bow come January (we know you couldn’t get it to us in time for Christmas).  Whatever you give us I’m sure we’ll be happy – so long as he is a striker.

Oh yeah Santa while you are at it, if you happen to have a number 1 keeper in your bag we could use a new one. The one you gave us a few years ago doesn’t work any more. Not sure if he is broke but he just doesn’t work. Oh and a left back would be nice too.

Enjoy the milk and cookies and tell Rudolph we said hi!!

Love,

Gooners!

Getting Back On Track: Arsenal v Stoke, Match Preview

By DaAdminGooner · 4 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 86 Comments »
Will The Right Arsenal Please Stand Up?

Will The Right Arsenal Please Stand Up?

On a weekend where we should be discussing and applauding Arsene Wenger for his 500th game at the helm of Arsenal we are all engaged in a discussion as to whether or not Le Professor has lost his plot. And unfortunately the opponents that his Arsenal side meet this weekend are one of the clubs that in recent memory have given them fits. This Saturday Arsene Wenger and Arsenal look to set the ship aright when Stoke City roll into the Emirates.

As you all know normally I would give a little background on Stoke. Given everything that’s going on, I am going to focus on our squad. We know what Stoke is about. They will try and play physical ball and try and knock the Gunners off their game plan. You know just like Blackburn did and Fulham did. Anyway, let’s take a look at our boys shall we?

It has not been a pleasant two weeks at Ashbourton Grove. Coming off the international break Arsenal saw their 13 game unbeaten streak halted by an opportunistic Sunderland side. In retrospect it was game we should’ve won but didn’t. Ah well.

Last Sunday in a London Derby with lots of meaning Cesc Fabregas and company hung around just long enough to make us think they were going to make a game of it. However, in the glint of 4 minutes and off the toe of Didier Drogba and leg of Thomas Vermaelen we were down 2-nil and down for the count. True, the disallowed Arshavin goal was an absolute blown call and could’ve changed the complexion of the game and true the game was horrendously officiated.

Finally if you follow the Carling Cup and thought it was the only chance for Arsenal to win silverware you came away bitterly disappointed as the reserve squad lost to Manchester City 3-0. To be honest I didn’t expect much if we had won, it would’ve been a bonus but with a squad that was 65% youngsters who have rarely participated in matches with similar opposition , the writing was always on the wall – wasn’t it? The only negative of that match is the Alexander Song picked up his 5th yellow of the season and will be unavailable for this match.

The lead in to this match could start of on a worse foot. We know that we are short not just in height but in terms of strikers we do not seem to have anyone with the ability to step in and fill the gap being left by Robin Van Persie’s injury. And it is still another week or so before Nicky B returns to training. So if Arsenal are going to win this match Captain Fabtastic is going to need to muster the troops and run the game from the midfield as he was able to do prior to the two previous nightmares.

Arsenal will also need to have Andrei Arshavin put his foot where his mouth is and become an effective player for them. Andrei in case you haven’t heard has spent a better part of the week, speaking his mind. While I find it refreshing that an athlete would do so – I think saying your team isn’t strong enough or tall enough or able to compelete in the league does very little to ingratiate yourself to teammates who for what its worth are doing everything they can short of shooting the damn ball.  Andrei has been an enigma all season so far. Yes he has scored some corkers but he has been absent in most of the games and when he doesn’t get his way on the pitch tends to give up a little.

And in terms of the Arsenal scoring drought therein lies the main problem. I personally think it has less to do with the striker per se than it has to do with whatever player who has the ball in or around the box shooting the damn ball and pressuring the keeper. In the Chelsea match, Arsenal had a ton of opportunities to test Petr Cech and they didn’t. They were looking for the right time, open pass or I guess a sure thing before they would pull the trigger. If Arsenal are to find the net again, the need to be shooting from the edge of the box to get the keeper moving. They need to forget about always finding the right channel for the pass and shooting the damn ball.  The reason Denilson seems to make those wonder shots from 30 yards out is – no one is expecting it. The goalie is dumbfounded. Look at Denilson’s two long shot goals this season and the keeper is frozen because he can’t get an effective read on what Denilson is going to do.

Now I am not advocating not passing in the box ever, I am just advocating taking a little more chances around the box that tests the keeper. Arshavin and Cesc have been deadly from that area. Give it a shot.

Unfortunately there is not alot I can say about our own keeper situation. Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski are at best solid number twos but they are not number ones. There are too many errors in their game – as senior players – for there to be any confidence in their long term viability. Mannone and Cszensy are too unproven to even qualify. I know Arsene is going to be shopping for a striker but if he wants his defence to improve the first start is getting a solid keeper who can be their number one.

Ah well – just a couple notes on all the news this week and then my final overview of the match:

1. I am absolutely sick and tired of the press constantly crucifying Arsene Wenger. Look he has his faults but not shaking mark Hughes’ hand is not the end of the world as the Brit press is making it out to be. Why none of them seem to be questioning Hughes’ on field antics only goes to heighten the feeling that there is a wide spread bias around Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.

2. I love Andreir Arshavin. When he is on he one of the top 15 players in Europe. He is that good. The problem is – he hasn’t been that good all season and frankly I am thinking that since he hasn’t been that good – going around telling anyone who will listen that he thinks the team isn’t good enough to compete or that Liverpool’s KOP is a great place does not make for long term endearment to the Arsenal faithful or his teammates. It is all well and good to criticize, I welcome the frankness – but shouldn’t Andrei take a good hard look at himself first?

3. Finally, I have no problem with the youngsters getting rolled out at the Carling Cup. Some of them are going to be in the first team soon anyway and its better they get competition from other club’s first teams now and get the experience rather than get promoted to the first team and wind up shell  shocked because of the transition from reserve team to first team.

So How Will It Play Out:
Okay maybe I am the eternal optimist. Yes it is Stoke and yes they will be physical. But I think this squad is going to come out and try and prove to everyone that they still have it and that with or without Robin Van Persie they are a contender. I don’t even want to discuss what happens if they lose. I just don’t see it happening. And no it won’t be a clean sheet because Manuel Almunia will let one in at the 88th minute.

Probable Starting XI:

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

Injuries:

Arsenal: Walcott (hamstring, 13 Dec), Bendtner (groin, 19 Dec), Diaby (calf, 19 Dec), Clichy (back, 26 Dec), Gibbs (ankle, Feb), Djourou (knee, Apr), Van Persie (ankle, Apr) Song (1 game suspension)

Stoke: Shawcross (groin), Whitehead (1 game suspension)

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin. The little russian has been talking alot lately. Its one thing to say those and be a leader for people to follow. Its another to say them and not back it up with your own actions. Here’s to hoping that he intends to show up this week – because he needs to.

Stoke: Beattie. Why? I dunno. I really don’t know anyone else on Stoke – that’s why.

Young Guns At Dawn: Arsenal v Manchester City Match Preview(Carling Cup)

By DaAdminGooner · 2 December, 09 · Filed in Match Previews/Reviews · 95 Comments »

Are You Ready To Rumble!!!!
Are You Ready To Rumble!!!!

Rivalries will be renewed on Wednesday when Arsene Wenger takes his young guns up to the Eastlands for a Carling Cup tie against Mark Hughes first team. The return to City of Manchester Stadium is the first since the league match that saw the citizens go on and win 4-2.

That match was not without its controversy, the stamp on Robin Van Persie by Emmanuel Adebayor, his subsequent score and run to taunt the Arsenal away fans and his departure for 3 games.

The Carling Cup is high on the powder blues pecking order and they will roll out a full compliment of first teamers when the young guns come into town. Sparky has already committed to starting both former Arsenal men in his squad that is fully fit and will also feature the likes of Robinho, Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards who have all come off of recent injuries. The Eastlands outfit figure if they can win the Carling Cup that will give them enough to launch into a run for the League and a Champion’s League spot.

However, it is more important for Mark Hughes as he has come under pressure of late due to his squad’s lack of form. Since the beginning of October, the Citizens have won only once a 5-1 drubbing of Scunthorpe in the last round of the Carling Cup.  Other than that they have lost Manchester United and drawn against,  they have drawn against Villa, Wigan, Fulham, Birmingham, Burnley, Liverpool and Hull. In at least 4 of the draws City had a lead going into the last 10 minutes of the match only to watch their opponents draw level. Oh hell I’ll say pretty much in ALL of the matches they were completely outplayed.

The £40 million additions of Kolo Toure and Joleon Lescott has not gone as planned. Kolo still does not look like the player he was pre-AFCON and Lescott is ineffective for club and country. Shay Givens could very well be the best goalie in the league but unfortunately if your defence isn’t defending you will likely let in goals.

Adebayor who was rocket hot when the season started has only netted once since his suspension – a free header against Liverpool that Pepe Reina should’ve had on the bounce. Carlos Tevez isn’t as prolific as he was made out to be. Yes he is great running up and down the pitch with verve but he is not finding the net.

So what’s that all mean, this may very well be the most important match of the Citizen’s season. A loss to the Young Guns and their downward spiral will almost be complete going into the Sunday match against Chelsea. A win is a must for Sparky’s sake and his team.

For the Gunners as we all know not everything has been bright. Losses to Sunderland and Chelsea have placed a gray cloud over Ashbourton Grove. Arsene Wenger in a very un-Wenger like way has had to come out and publically declare that Arsenal will be active in the transfer market due to the injury to Robin Van Persie.

Many Gooners and pundits still do not understand why Arsene does not place more emphasis on this cup and start more senior players. Simply put Arsene still has his eyes on bigger prizes. The team is still in the running for the FA Cup and the Champion’s League. The Premier League title is a question mark given Sunday’s result. Wenger will not change his policy of whelping his youngsters in the Carling Cup.

This is an opportunity for players to show Le Boss they deserve a shot at the first team. Hey, given the way some of the first teamers are playing – a little competition won’t hurt.

So far the average age of the starters is 19 but that tilts higher with Senderos and the ancient Silvestre working in the back. Wilshere, Watt, Vela, and Ramsey along with Lukasz Fabianksi should feature prominently. Fran Merida will not be in this match as he is suspended for obtaining a red card in a reserve match against Aston Villa.

For me I am looking most forward to seeing Ramsey and Watt get loads of time against first team opposition. Ramsey is everything Wenger thought he was going to be when he signed the young Welshman. His display against Scotland and subsequent displays on the EPL field are showing the promise of his future.  I want to see what Watt can do becuase from what I am reading the kid could really have the stuff to be a top notch player in the mold of Henry. I want to see that and this match is the perfect opportunity especially against the defense they will be playing against. (Richards should not inspire any confidence in any manager).

A win for the youngsters and the sting of the weekend is lessened. A loss and is it really a shame? Probably not in the large scheme of things. Arsene is clearly focused on Saturday’s matchup against Stoke because a loss there would be even more devastating for the team and would likely kill them in the league and put them officially in the struggle for a CL spot with Spurs, Pool and City.

But folks I would like to take you back 5 years ago. 2004. The same setting. Kevin Keegan’s Manchester City are out with a full complement of healthy first teamers and Arsene Wenger rolls out a team of youngsters:

Almunia; Hoyte, Senderos, Cygan, Larsson; Pennant (Djourou), Flamini, Fabregas, Smith (Owusu-Abeyie); Lupoli (Karbassiyoon), Van Persie

The score that day? 2-1 to the Arsenal.

As a matter of fact an interesting tidbit – Arsenal are 5-0 in all Carling Cup matches against City.

How I See It Playing Out:
Honestly, I can see either scenario happening, City win, Arsenal win. City have the first team and experience but are in such a rut I am not sure they can get out of it even in a Carling Cup match. Arsenal have in my opinion the talent but lack the experience. I am not sure talent can be the only thing they rely on. I said this in the other Carling Cup matches I watched in that I think our youngsters are “harder” than our first team. Maybe its the fact that there are more English players on the that team.  But they tackle harder and they do not shy away from mixing it up. Plus you have to like the attitude of Ramsey when he basically said Liverpool didn’t deserve to be on the field with us. They backed up that brashness and frankly that is an intangible that can bring an added dimension to their play. I just don’t know though how this shapes out. I am going to say that this match takes typical form and City get a 2-1 lead and let in equalizer late in regulation. It stays a draw in extra time and goes to PKs – then its a duck shoot.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Aaron Ramsey. He is already showing why he was sought after by both Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson. He already is annointed as the heir apparent to Cesc Fabregas. He was a one man wrecking crew against Scotland and for his young age he has an absolute great feel for the game.

Manchester City: Emmanuel Adebayor. He went on a rampage in his last time against Arsenal. It resulted in a 3 game ban. Don’t expect to see the same antics. As a matter of fact I wouldn’t be suprised if he isn’t a little subdued so as to not attract any attention – because you know the refs will be watching. He hasn’t been in good form of late and a lot of Gunners fans are saying we told you. Let’s hope he doesn’t tell us.

Starting XI: (Note: Your Guess is As Good As Mine)

It could look something like this.

It could look something like this.

 Injuries:
Arsenal: Van Persie, Bendtner, Gibbs, Clichy, Djourou, Diaby

Manchester City:  ?????

Final Score:
Arsenal 2
City 2
Match to be decided on PKs
