Me, you, and the team are all delighted and relieved after our turnaround against Villa, but we need to keep our feet on the ground and acknowledge the following:
This is our worst stint under Arsene Wenger.
This is one of the weakest, if not, THE weakest Arsenal team we’ve had under Arsene Wenger. Yes, Pascal Cygan was better than Squillaci. Francis Jeffers was better than Chamakh. Limpar had a better work ethic than 90% of our team, need I go on?
The Invincibles happened eight years ago. It was amazing, I loved it, we all loved it, but we need to stop going on about it.
Three years ago we were gunning for first place, now we’re praying for fourth.
The above is not me saying Arsene Wenger is a bad manager, not at all, but, despite his arousing speech at half-time against Villa, he has lost his magic touch. Some Gooners don’t seem to be able to accept that fact so they blame the board instead. In some ways, the board are to blame, and in others, Wenger is to blame. Let’s weigh up the argument: Wenger is the one who picks the team, makes the substitutions, gives the team talks, controls and motivates the players. On the other hand, the board control our finances and are mainly responsible for executing transfer deals – Yes Ivan, I’m looking at you.
Now let’s focus solely on Wenger. He is as stubborn as they come, nobody can deny that, not even the “Arsene Knows Best” army. His lack of movement in the transfer window is worrying, but that shouldn’t be the main focus of this post. The main point is our play style: where has it gone? We used to be an unpredictable, fast-moving, dynamic, clinical side; we are far from that now. I’m not even referring to The Invincibles; I’m referring to the Arsenal side of four years ago, if that. Our play style is becoming more and more predictable; our movement off the ball is less and less energetic.
Fans need to wake up and realise we aren’t the largely intimidating side we were five years ago. A change in manager (in the summer, not mid-season) might do us some good; after all, we are Arsenal FC, not Arsene FC – although the correlation is frightening.
It’s being reported in the Daily Mail that Arsene Wenger is on a two-man shortlist to succeed Mourinho at Real Madrid, could a swap be on the cards? Don’t be silly, if Wenger wants to go, he will go. As for the board hiring a mercenary like Mourinho – I think not, even they have their standards, in other words: he’ll want really high wages (plus really high bonuses) and then leave after 2-3 seasons. I’m not saying I want Mourinho at Arsenal; I’m just touching on last week’s news.
No matter what happens in the window this January, we need to get behind the team more than ever. Yes Wenger deserves criticism, and so do the squad, but booing? That’s not helping, but it does send a message. As I outlined at the start, this is one of the worst spells we’ve had under Wenger, and it has been made clear to him that we, as fans, are not happy, but we need to show our support, help the players, be the twelfth man and all that jitter.
As the great Dennis Bergkamp once said: “I really like Arsenal. But you, do you really like Arsenal? Or just Arsenal with trophies?”
Do you still like Arsenal? Obviously you do, buy you’d be much happier with trophies, wouldn’t we all. But it’s clear we’re going to have to wait – so just get behind the team. I’ll end with one last quote from The Dark Knight, which may just help you: “Sometimes, people deserve to have their faith rewarded”
We can be those people.
Keep the faith, paid off against Villa didn’t it?

and the rumors have Arshavin a target for both Anzi … the big spending team in Russia, whose window is open for another month… and … Barcelona in the Summer!
LOL
that’s a laugh.
I think he’s playing out of position… as well as not performing well.
Probably needs a new environment…
But Wenger has literally said he LOVES ARSHAVIN… so that should be big motivation for him to try harder!
and RVP already being mentioned as a 25 MILLION GBP target for Juventus.
Well, when we don’t qualify for the CL next season… and RVP refuses to sign a new contract… what do you think the Summer will be like?
How about another Summer Transfer Saga, with endless rumors from numerous teams… trying to buy the star player from the SELLING TEAM, Arsenal FC, INC.
You KNOW we will sell him, for a huge profit, because we simply will never risk letting him go on a free… and we will never sign the caliber of player that it would take to make him stick around, and show ambition.
So, with that to look forward to… and an absolutely thrilling January Window for all the Arsenal fans… I bid a fond… see ya later!
I’ll lurk and read HTS’s hippie positivity… and see if I can find a Charlton blog and PSG blog, teams trying to actually win!
LOL
how hapless and pathetic we have become.
I WILL be rooting for the fans… to show displeasure at every turn, with every failure… and hopefully more and more empty seats.

I agree, Wenger is a legend.
This German guy has NEVER played for Dortmund!
He suffered an injury severe enough that his coaches thought he would never play again. He only started playing again about a year ago!!!!
He is slight and small (his height on wikipedia is EXAGGERATED! He is NOT that tall.
He was NOT at all in the reckoning for being moved into the first team and he was NOT rated that highly even before his injury. Remember Dortmund know a LOT about AMs. They produce ‘em by the truckload, Goetze, Sahin, etc.
They were more than ready to have him go out on a free this summer. So they must have been incredibly bemused to have Wenger swoop in and pay them half a million instead!
PS: By the way, this guy’s playing style is SLOW and PONDEROUS. He is quite technical though and has an eye for a pass.
Either way this guy won’t play a game for us in the next 1.5 seasons.
As I said, Wenger is an absolute genius! Undisputed!

@Fred,
All this love for small AMs and Wenger wouldn’t sign Modric when he was offered to us… Another one that got away…

so we sign a 19 year old coming off an injury from Germany, and we loan out Ryo to Bolton, another 19 year old, who can’t get into a 1st team game.
Wow.
Brilliant stuff.
Wenger is a f’n legend.
Not sure why I ever doubted the man.
its a big FU to the fans and media who ever questioned why we aren’t attempting to improve the squad…

Anyone see the Rwandan president suggest by tweet that Arsene needs a new job and Arsenal a new manager? LOL

I’m guessing their is some cheap accomodation in Germany these days and Arsenal have negotiated even better room rates for the scouts. Either that or one of the scouting staff has a girlfriend in Germany.

So Wenger gives us a 2 finger salute and signs another teenager. The AFC publicity machine swings into gear and has an immediate photo strip of the new signing on the club website. Note to self, how long did it take Wenger to acknowledge the signing of Arshavin in the transfer window? I seem to recall being overwhelmed by the managers silence on that ocassion.

@Kiwi, Another kiddie in the midfield. Don’t we have enough of those? Plus he’s already missed a year with a bad knee. Unfortunately it’s another classic Wenger signing.

I love the club too, but I’ve come to accept the fact that we’re not the intimidating side we once were. It helps me support the team more at games, knowing I don’t have to expect a win every time and I can just get on with singing for 90mins! But I would much prefer a trophy, obviously.

@MylesBurrell, We intimidate nobody, not the
smaller clubs, who can see us a possible scalp, and the big teams believe they
can walk into the Emirates and get a WIN.
We often scared teams off the pitch when the Invinicibles played…
It had been quoted by opponents, who KNEW they were not going to beat
the Arsneal… if the opponent has that mindset before the game kicks off,
then they have very little chance.
As you noted, even 3 or 4 years ago, we could still play a team off the
pitch and throw up a big number on the scoreboard… now, we’re just
another team, not doing anything special in terms of style, and definitely
not in terms of talent and star players. STAR PLAYERS win titles. They
are the difference maker…more often than not. and we’ve got RVP.
Everyone else, other teams have equivalent or better players.
I accept that we aren’t close to what we were, but I do NOT accept that
it has to be that way. It’s a CHOICE by the club… the board and manager
CHOSE to sell off star players, not replace them, and keep the money for
profits. That, is NOT acceptable… and I choose not to buy ANYTHING
Arsenal related, and I choose to NOT travel to and spend my money on
the team any longer.
The only thing changing the way the club run the business, is going to be
the FANS not buying this regimes systematic dismantling of one of the
best teams ever… If the fans don’t go, or don’t buy merchandise and
concessions at the games, … it WILL effect the profit.
As long as we as supporters, keep paying the highest prices, buying the
kits and scarves and tickets and concessions… why the hell would the
Arsenal FC, LLC, INC…. ever change a thing? They wouldn’t … they view
the fans as SUCKERS, and Wenger views the fans as IDIOTS, who should never
dare question what he does… that’s why he gets angry and is baffled when
supporters QUESTION HIM at year end meetings with the supporters.
The club is EMBARRASSING in many respects right now.
it’s a SHAME.

I enjoyed the article Myles… and while I understand what Bergkamp asks, I’d counter with … I LOVE Arsenal… maybe “loved”… but its not the same Football Club as it was when we played at Highbury, and when the main goal was winning a trophy, or the League…
as opposed to making money… which is what it is now.
The game has changed… and Arsenal FC has totally changed.
I always support the players, as long as they give a good effort… play hard and with passion… and that’s what most supporters want and expect. We pay our cash, or spend our time…. and the players bleed the red & white of the club…
When the club take the fans for granted… or abuse them with ticket prices being raised (even though we are the highest priced tickets in Europe, or among them)… when we aren’t winning shite… and we’re selling off star players for massive profits… then do NOTHING during the transfer window … it’s a big slap in the fans face…
so I hope they boo Wenger every time he makes an idiotic substitution… or after we lose to a shite team… and if the stadium is half empty for the last few weeks of the season, because we’re out of all competitions, and we aren’t in the Top 4 fight… maybe that will be what it takes for change to occur at the club.
One thing is for sure… Change NEEDS to occur, and soon.

Stirring stuff Mike – but you can’t dictate how people feel about a sports team and neither should you try (too hard).
A lot of nonsense gets written by fans to pad out their position. But at the end of the day we follow a club and we do it by choice. If we want to take a break or put our interest on ice or boo then it’s all fair game.
A fan has no real direct influence. And yet its our collective dollars that fund these clubs and pay the Wenger’s 7 million pounds p.a. and pay the likes of Theo Walcott 60,000 pounds per week. Theo Walcott was never worth 60,000 pounds per week in footballing terms and he still isn’t. I’ve said that for a long time. And now that we’ve gifted him such a ridiculous salary he believes he’s worth 85,000 pounds per week. You’ve got to be very careful, actions create consequences, and Wenger’s whacky ‘equity views’ have created a monster of overpaying young players who never deliver. They get paid like superstars without ever delivering and then you create a big mess. That’s why I laugh at Wenger’s frequent references to ‘values’ and taking the moral highground.
The regular booing and the growing number of empty seats are the only evidence that speak to the manager and the clubs owners. Ultimately this is a business, it needs a huge amount of money (read “from supporters”) to survive and if it stops delivering what the fans want then it will degenerate.
So, frankly, I want change and I fear the only way it will come is by Wenger (and the team) falling hard on their faces. Such is life.
I don’t think this is the worst team of Wenger’s reign. On the contrary I think the GK, defence and midfield could be used by a balanced manager. Attack is the area I think is the worst ever – no question in my mind. Our problems however are the same ones we’ve had for more than 6 years. We persist with fragile players. The squads too light. Indecisiveness – we react too slow to obvious problems.
PS: interesting that someone else (ANR) picked up on Walcott’s petulence in the ManU game. I couldn’t believe what an arrogant little smuck Walcott was toward Oxlade. Oxlade outperformed him and the little primadonna didn’t like it. That’s what happens when you puff up non-performing teenagers and tell them they’re wonderful when their performances are crap. Contrast Mourinho (as an example) who rewards performers. Wenger’s reverse values make me laugh.
