Arsenal Manchester United FA Cup Preview Tactical Analysis

The rivalry between Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson’s United has been very famous. Though Sir Alex Ferguson garnered more successes in the Premier League, yet Wenger had his moments of glory as well. The Invincibles record in 2004 was perhaps the greatest achievement of Wenger during his 22 years at Arsenal.

Both have retired now, while Unai Emery (for Arsenal) and Ole Gunnar Solskaer (for United) have taken their positions. Both teams will face each other on Saturday in the FA Cup fourth round.

Arsenal was struggling before, but the recent victory against Chelsea should give them a boost now. While Manchester United have seen a huge revival since Jose Mourinho (their former manager) was sacked.

Anelka and Vieira scored two goals in the first half to set up a good lead. However, Sheringham struck twice in 7 minutes to haul his team level before the end of the first half. Arsenal fans were delighted when David Platt came up with a late goal to complete their double that season.

#2 Arsenal 2 Manchester United 4 (2005)

A glance at the scoreline might suggest a comfortable win for Manchester United, although the actual scenario was quite different on the pitch. Both teams had fought very well, but United came away with the victory in the end.

This was the time when the rivalry of Manchester United and Arsenal was peaking. Vieira and Roy Keane had a bust-up in the tunnel before the game. And later, Mikael Silvestre was sent off for head-butting an Arsenal player in the second half.

Arsenal took the lead when Patrick Vieira headed home from a corner. Ryan Giggs equalized soon with a deflected shot. Though Dennis Bergkamp restored the lead for Arsenal, still the Red Devils got away with the victory in the end. Two goals from Ronaldo and one from John O’Shea finished the game in the favor of Manchester United.

#3 Arsenal 3 Manchester United 1 (2001)

Arsenal fans would always remember this victory of their team against Manchester United. Arsenal inflicted a heavy defeat to the defending champions at Highbury.

Paul Scholes had given United a good platform by scoring the first goal, but the Red Devils failed to build on that platform. Ljungberg came up with a goal for Arsenal, and then Fabien Barthez gifted two more to Wenger’s side with two terrible mistakes. Thierry Henry pounced on those two mistakes to give Arsenal an emphatic victory against their rivals.
