Three of Arsenal’s Biggest Wins

While Arsenal’s fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season was somewhat disappointing, with it now being three seasons without Champions League football, there is plenty of optimism around the Gunners for the coming season.
Coach Unai Emery is now in his second full season and looks set to further embed his playing style into the players, while a host of new signings means there is a lot of excitement amongst Arsenal fans.
Known for the free-flowing attacking style that has wreaked havoc on countless defences over the seasons, it’s reasonable to expect Arsenal will have a few impressive wins this season.
This is especially true after the disappointment of last season’s Europa League final defeat against Chelsea – it now feels the Gunners have a point to prove against their opposition this year.
Arsenal are no stranger to huge scoreline victories, having bagged plenty of massive wins over their opponents during their 134-year history. So, with the upcoming season almost upon us, let’s take a look at three of Arsenal’s biggest wins.

Arsenal 7 – 0 Everton, May 2005
Arsenal’s massive victory over Everton at the end of the 2004-05 season represents their joint-highest win in the Premier League, the other coming in a 7-0 win over Middlesbrough the season before.
The win over Everton was one of the high points of a somewhat disappointing campaign, finishing second but winning the FA cup. On the penultimate game of the season, Denis Bergkamp rolled back the years, putting on an incredible performance where he assisted three of the first seven goals, with the likes of Robin Van Persie, Patrick Vieira, and Mathieu Flamini all getting on the scoresheet.
Arsenal 7 – 0 Standard Liege, November 1993
Arsenal also have two joint-biggest wins in Europe, both also seeing the Gunners score an impressive seven goals without conceding. While their win over Slavia Prague in the Champions League group stage in 2007 is more recent, their victory against Standard Liege is likely to be more fondly remembered amongst Arsenal fans.
The second leg of the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup second round of games took place against Standard Liege on November 1993, which also saw Arsenal win 7-0 to progress a whopping 10-0 on aggregate.
Despite top scorer Ian Wright missing the game, Arsenal demolished their opponents, with Tony Adams, Paul Merson, and Alan Smith amongst the scorers. The Gunners would go on to win the competition, beating Parma 1-0 in the final.
Arsenal 9- 1 Grimsby Town, January 1931
Despite occurring in 1931, Arsenal’s 9-1 win over Grimsby Town remains their biggest win at Highbury before leaving the stadium in 2006. It’s also an important win in the history of the club, marking the start of a nine-game undefeated streak on route to Arsenal claiming their first-ever league championship.
Despite the huge scoreline, most of the goals were netted between two players, with David Jack scoring fours goals while Jack Lambert scored a hattrick.
