Which Arsenal Legends Should Follow Henry Into Premier League Hall of Fame?
Thierry Henry joined Alan Shearer as the first two inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame and six more players are to join the all-time greats at the end of the season.
We’ve taken a look at which Arsenal legends are likely to join Henry next in the prestigious club.
Dennis Bergkamp
It would be quite fitting for Henry’s strike partner Dennis Bergkamp to be added to the Hall of Fame next. Together Henry and Bergkamp formed one of the best partnerships the Premier League has ever seen. Arsenal, who now have Premier League odds as big as 175/1 for a top-six finish this season, would love to have a player of Bergkamp’s class today. He would give the side a big chance of breaking back into Europe.
The Non-Flying Dutchman won three Premier League titles with the Gunners. He scored 87 goals in the competition during his spell in England between 1995 and 2006. But he was more than just a goal scorer, he has been one of the best flair players in the history of English football. The fact that Bergkamp was a key member of the Invincibles team, which went unbeaten through the 2003/04 Premier League campaign, attests to this.
Patrick Vieira
Frenchman Patrick Vieira is one of Arsenal’s greatest ever captains. Not only was he a fantastic leader on the pitch, he also had so much quality. Who can forget the battles he had with his opposite number at Manchester United, Roy Keane?
Just like Henry, Vieira was not a household name before Arsene Wenger signed him. At a cost of just £3.5 million, he was an absolute bargain for the club. Not only did he go on to win the Premier League three times, but he also did the double twice with the Gunners.
Arguably Vieira’s best strength was his toughness on the ball. The World Cup and European Championship winner is still sung about at the Emirates Stadium today. He would be a very worthy inclusion into the Premier League Hall of Fame.
Ian Wright
“Ian Wright Wright Wright” is a chant that used to echo around Highbury in the 1990s. With 185 goals for the club, the striker is bettered by only Henry in the all-time goals list.
Wright was one of the stars in the early stages of the Premier League. His speed and finishing caused defences nightmares when he was in an Arsenal shirt. He finally got his hands on the Premier League title in 1998 in what was his final season with the club, before moving to West Ham. Another highlight of Wright’s career at Arsenal was his European Cup Winners’ Cup success in 1994. That is the Gunners’ last major win in Europe.
Former Arsenal stars Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole, Tony Adams, and Robin Van Persie are also on the shortlist for the Premier League Hall of Fame at the end of this season. By the time the latest six players are added, there is likely to be a lot of representation for the Gunners.
