Arsenal have had a fair share of legendary players ply their trade with the Gunners over the years. The North London club has had some memorable moments go down in footballing history. They are the only team in Premier League history to win an Invincible title and along with that, a host of big names lifted the title with the Gunners.

While that is a reflection of the sort of Arsenal have been over the years, the club hasn’t had the best of times recently. Despite that, the club still has the sort of charm that attracts many from around the world. Arsenal still remain a global attraction.

Keeping that in mind, we take a look at some famous sports quotes that will surely resonate with the Gunners’ faithful. Find more inspirational quotes from athletes here.

10 .“Stubbornness usually is considered a negative; but I think that trait has been a positive for me.”- Cal Ripken, Jr.

Arsene Wenger’s teams were known for having played an attractive brand of football. Shades of that were seen in the Invincibles title-winning team, as they often played a style that was very Barcelona-like. But in the end, that is what has defined Wenger and Arsenal. That has formed their identity. Wenger had to be stubborn in the approach to making it work and despite criticism, he became known for that and inspired a generation of Arsenal fans.

9. “Wisdom is always an overmatch for strength.” – Phil Jackson

Wenger was fondly known as the ‘Professor’ of the game. To many, he was Pep Guardiola before Pep himself. In an era that had teams that boasted of physical prowess like Manchester United and Chelsea, the Frenchman’s team had that spark of wisdom that defined Wenger. It set them apart from the others and helped them carve out a new identity for themselves.

8. “A trophy carries dust. Memories last forever.” – Mary Lou Retton

Arsenal have, in recent years especially, come in criticism for not winning as many trophies as their counterparts. But one thing that has defined them is their approach to the game and some famous North London derby victories. Fans can only hope that trophies come along soon, but the club has given them memories to cherish forever.

7. “You are never really playing an opponent. You are playing yourself, your own highest standards, and when you reach your limits, that is real joy.” – Arthur Ashe

Towards the end of Wenger’s tenure, there were constant mumbles about lack of trophies. But the manner in which the club won multiple FC Cups at that point identifies a lot with the quote. They had to defy the idea of them having a soft underbelly and they did that in sensational circumstances when they won the FA Cups. They found themselves 2-0 down against Hull and still won the game back in 2014.

6. “Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.” – Mike Singletary

Arsenal are known to have one of the best academies in English football. They’ve given the opportunities to players like Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and many at a very young age. They went onto win trophies with either Arsenal or other clubs. All as Singletary says, they only needed one opportunity to make a mark.

5. “In baseball and in business, there are three types of people. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened.” – Tommy Lasorda

This applies peculiarly to how Arsenal played and often blew teams away with their flair and panache, while Wenger watched on. They left many enthralled and inspired a generation of fans to get used to watching the team play a certain brand of football.

4. “Winning is not a sometime thing, it is an all the time thing. You don’t do things right once in a while. You do them right all the time. ” – Vince Lombardi

In the Invincibles season, Arsenal were used to winning. The process had taken many years and the perfection period had reaped the title. It didn’t happen in one go, they had to work hard in every game to make winning a habit of theirs.

3. “I’ve learned that something constructive comes from every defeat.” – Tom Landry

Like every club or team, Arsenal fell by tough times under Wenger and more recently. But they have always shown signs of coming back up and learning from their mistakes. After all, that is what will take them to glory once again.

2. “It’s all about the journey, not the outcome.” – Carl Lewis

There is a reason why Wenger will always be fondly remembered by football fans and Arsenal fans alike. That is because of the memories his team provided to the game. The journey took them to multiple places- good or bad. But it is the process of building that club and making it what it is today that made him a legend.

1. “The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.” – Pele

Be it the Invincibles title, the FA Cups or reaching the Champions League final, Arsenal defied a lot of odds to reach there. No one expected them to go unbeaten in the whole season. No one expected them to beat Manchester United on penalties in 2005 when they were getting dominated. But Wenger’s men had to show immense resolve and fighting spirit to beat the odds and triumph. This became a hallmark for the Gunners side and could soon be too under Mikel Arteta.
