Arsenal v Manchester United; Premier League Match Preview

In the last week the social media outlets and press have been all up in arms and raucus about whether or not Arsenal should or should not hold a guard of honour for Manchester United. Obviously it’s because of the impeneding return of Robin Van Persie and the former Arsenal striker’s involvement in helping United secure their 20th title. Frankly, it’s all misplaced and looks to be a case of “look the other way” and not at the real issues.
Of course Arsenal were going to hold a guard of honour. Why wouldn’t they? Because a ego filled twat happens to be playing for them after spending 8 years with us – excuse me while I laugh. The guard of honour is a tradition. In fact one that United has done for us. So it was never a question of if Arsenal would. But the thing this little talk about whether or not Arsenal would diverted focus from the really important facet of this match – whether or not Arsenal were going to win it.
See if Arsenal lose to United then, while mathmateically uncertain, the likelihood of finishing in the top 4 should for all intents and purposes be considered over. While drawing to Everton wasn’t necessarily bad, Tottenham’s win over City has applied pressure on Arsenal to win this match. Everyone was predciting a City win over Spurs to apply some pressure on United’s title race. That would’ve made this match maybe less important to Arsenal than it is now.
As it is City rolled over and had their bellies tickled. So now this is a match Arsenal must have. 3 points and I really like Arsenal’s chances to secure Champion’s League football next season, especially with Spuds and Chelsea still having to play each other. A draw, while not deadly really takes the run out their hands. A loss well like I said I really do think that a loss would sink us in that hunt for the Champion’s League spot.
And it’s not an easy task for Arsenal. Against United these last few years it never has been. In all competitions United have only lost once in 11 matches to Arsenal. That being the 1-0 loss at the Emirates courtesy of Aaron Ramsey on his return from his horrific injury. Then like now, United didn’t have to much play for. They just didn’t want to come into the Emirates and lose and by doing so – lost. United now have absolutely nothing to play for having wrapped up the title. Fergie has already insinuated he would start rolling out youngsters and he may very well do so here. Still you’d have to think less than a week after securing the title and partying like it’s 1999 the focus for United won’t be as crystal clear as maybe it would’ve been had they needed the match to win the title.
So it all sets up perfectly for Arsenal. And that worries me. In the past Arsenal have hardly been a team to take advantage of situational games – games where they could make up substantial ground when other’s around them had faltered. While noone has faltered (yet) it’s still a game where Arsenal could have an advantage by showing they are hungry.
This match has to be looked at as a final for Arsenal. They can’t approach it as they might any other regular season match. Dare I say the mentality that propelled them over Bayern in the Champion’s League needs to be the same for this Sunday afternoon league match. Bayern figured that they had the match tied up going in 3-0 and completely had understimated how Arsenal would approach the match and from the early goal on – you knew Arsenal would win. Arsenal need to no the MUST do exactly the same thing.
United are a good team going forward and will get their chances but I and many others have argued that this squad have merely been the best of mediocrity. They’ve been consistent and that consistency has been the differentiator between them and the rest of the league. They can be had.
City beat United at Old trafford because they had a plan – they attacked the left. Everything they did in that match was focused on the left side. It didn’t hurt that United set up by sitting back and allowing City to also overrun the center of the pitch but it was clear that City had their best chances and put United on the back foot by clearly attacking the left. I’ve always contended that as good as Rafael can be going forward he can be had defensively and Ferdinand is getting old while he has games of brilliance he also has ones of real questionable ability.
This is why I suspect Arsene may go with Gibbs and Santi on the left. The combination of speed and guile on the left would be a challenge. You could make a case for Monreal over Gibbs simply because him and Santi have a better understanding playing with each other but I suspect Gibbs whom is very much like City’s Clichy (and had a good performance against United) may start.
Of course the big question is who does Wenger start in the central role for the suspended Giroud. I like Giroud and feel we will see more from him his second season. But his season is effectively over for now. I think you can make a case for Lukas Podolski to go central here. If for no reason other than he’s still our most clinical finisher.
If United do sit back, looking to NOT LOSE then you would expect to see a good source of balls coming into Podolski. While he won’t always score he has a better chance of actualy testing the keeper than any of the other central forward options (Walcott and Gervinho.) His goal against Norwich the perfect example of this. Not many of our players have that ability to just turn and get a low hard shot into the net like he did.
Regardless of the selection choices the match is a must win for Arsenal. They can’t afford some slow prodding start. Arsenal have won 9 out of their last 12 matches – only losing once. They showed tremendous resiliancy in these matches and also showed heart when that has been one of the big question marks over recent Arsenal squads. They will need to call on that and more for this match and the remaining 3 if they are to secure Champion’s League football.
The Return of Van Persie.
I purposely avoided this in the write up because I could care less about his return. Its an uninteresting subplot. I’ve never argued with his rationale for leaving. I’ve always argued about the classless way he went about it. And it’s clear through comments he has made since leaving that he really never was that “Gunner through and through” he wanted us all to believe he was.
He speaks as if he is someone who still needs to validate his move. He recently said he doesn’t get why outside of United supporters he gets painted as a money-grubbing twat. As I said, we’ve all questioned the club’s ambitions and players leaving to “go win trophies” is difficult to take but easy to understand. However it’s the manner they leave that really gets at supporters.
While I still have questions about Cesc’s manner of leaving and argue there is a case to be made that he essentially went on strike to force a move he publically kept quiet and since the move hasn’t felt the need to continually validate his move. Same with the likes Gael Clichy and Kolo Toure. Both have had success since leaving Arsenal but both haven’t felt a need to remind anyone who will listen about it. Not the case for Van Persie.
As a matter of fact I never thought anyone would become more despised than Samir Nasri – until Van Persie. Van Persie is now public enemy number one. And while the guard of honour is the right thing to do, booing and cajolling Van Persie also is (without singing the vile “she said no” chant.) My own personal hope is that Gunnersaurus pulls his shorts down as he walks through the Guard of honour and then blames his inner child.
Van Persie will never be a legend. His tenure at United will be too short and decline will eventually set in. He will never be remembered positively at Arsenal even though he was here for 8 years. He may win trophies at United – fair cop to him – but as great a player as he is – he likely sealed the negative perception of himself with the way he handled the move and you know what – too fucking bad.

The lack of comments again reflects the low interest that is typical of Wenger’s latter-day reign. Challenging for crumbs is underwhelming for a club of Arsenal’s stature.
The MU game was strange. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen such a muted United side. They’ve won the title – they’ve clocked off early. The fact that we looked ‘eager’ and more ‘up for it’ against a United side says everything. It makes it hard to judge our performance. In any event we know that Arsenal under Wenger can’t back up an up tempo performance. It’s not unusual for us to deliver a big effort in a big game and then to revert to our nontensity self.
I see Wenger might be a target for PSG. Some of this fits. Some doesn’t. Right place, Paris. Right country, France. The level of the league is lower – that’s good for Wenger and would enable him to win something whilst entertaining his extreme views. The bit that doesn’t fit is the ‘financial steroids’ that back PSG. Wenger has railed against financial doping so could he then join a club that is part of that culture? He might. This isn’t the first tme that his name has been substantively linked with the Parisian club and on previous ocassions he has had talks with them. I’d love him to go. It would be win-win, a nice swansong to his career and a dignified way for us to get rid of him and move on.
The other interesting development is the high number of replacement candidates that now seem like real possibilities. Where once the gloomy Wengerphiles groped for the razor to slash their wrists at the mere mention of Wenger’s exit, now we see quite clearly that there are many successful managerial candidates who are quite getable. It’s not just the Mr Unattainables like Pep and Jose. The list of potential managers to replace Wenger includes the coaches of Bayern (he is leaving), Dortmund, Germany, and closer to home you have the EPL tested Michael Laudrup.
The ‘sudden’ emergence of German football demonstrates that the tides change and that what once looked an established immovable world order is anything but. Bayern and Dortmund bash the Spanish heavyweights. Was that all about financial clout and outrageous expenditure? No. Bayern despite their impressive sustainable revenue streams spend judiciously. Where they differ to Arsenal is they DO spend. They aren’t scared to spend big on a key player. Bayern are the perfect model for Arsenal to learn from in many ways. Dortmund, in contrast, demonstrate that a clever manager can out perform a global heavyweight. Klopp is doing what Wenger used to do before he became distracted by footballing purity and obsessed by his ego and refusing to be a life-long learner.
It would be good if Wenger goes to PSG, he’s run his time at Arsenal. I have zero faith that another season with him at the helm will change anything. Let him go, move on, there are many strong candidates to replace him. Hopefully Stan will sell out to the big guy. Bring in freshness. Restore the interest.
wow, what a ghost town! is no one interested in arsenal anymore? have they perhaps migrated elsewhere? i’ve been through worse with monaco and dortmund.
i had to work yesterday so i just finished watching the game. sagna had a bad ten-second spell that likely cost the team 2 points. i’d still rather have him than not. sign a proper center forward to show him arsenal are ready to win again and maybe he’ll sign. could loic remy be that dude? demba ba would have been nice too but that milk is spilled.
my player of the match yesterday was spanish mikey. arteta is just a brilliant player. he seldom makes the wrong decision. the commie continually mentioned how well he’d shut down rooney. it wasn’t about being stronger or faster than rooney or tough tackling; just being smart and playing within himself. he was always open and when he was tightly marked, he just moved his marker away from where the ball needed to go. he makes life so easy for koscielny and mertesacker. might arsenal need a physical player in midfield? perhaps to partner arteta (wilshere). however, arsenal don’t need to try and upgrade in the holding role. i’d recommend a young protege for arteta to mentor. athletic bilbao have a good one i saw about a month ago. same for psg. they have a kid with an italian name who could fit the bill.
arsenal’s entire central midfield did well, to include ramsey. if he develops his awareness, he can make that spot his own. the way i used to tell my kids is you need to go beyond just seeing the game and begin to feel the flow of the game. technically, ramsey is not bad, but that awareness needs to improve.
to quote adele, “rumor has it” that arsenal are in big for jovetic. while he’s certainly talented, arsenal need a prototypical arsenal #9; one who’s tall, strong, fast, and clinical. an anelka/henry/adebayor/van persie-type has got to be priority #1. maybe the plan is to make jovetic that guy. he’s kinda short but we’ll see.
arsenal are always one or two players away from competing. this summer, i only see danger in sagna and fabianski leaving. if arsenal sign those two guys and a top striker, i really fancy arsenal’s chances of competing next year. then wenger needs to learn to rotate the squad, but that’s another topic.
yes. I understand why there isn’t much commentary Josh… what else is there to say, that hasn’t already been re-hashed?
as I have stated on more than one occasion… Arsenal are not really relevant any longer…
supporters of any of the bigger teams find that we are a JOKE…
the club sell off its best talent to whomever bids highest… so Arsenal are not a threat to anyone!! Being Top 4 is only a big deal in Arsene Wenger’s mind, and the board’s fat pockets…
I am sorry, but we are not going to compete for trophies with the addition of a top striker…
we are 21 POINTS behind Manchester United… and they are heavily rumored to be adding Lewandowski… If that happens, and they keep Rooney, watch out for ManU going on another run of dominance.
We need a TOP LEVEL Center Back… commanding, strong, tough.
Koscielny and Mertesacker are not a pairing that strike fear in ANY real team. They are a comical at times, that you can regularly count on to have a gaffe, and cost a goal.
We need tough strong athletic defensive midfielder… to not only spell Arteta, compliment him and/or Wilshire… but offer something different in terms of when things don’t go according to plan… (the old PLAN B)
I don’t mind having Ramsey in the team at all… he’s 100% Arsenal, and committed to the cause every match… he’s the modern day Ray Parlour… and there’s nothing wrong with that.
RUMORS.
Arsene Wenger to PSG.
Cesc Fabregas being sold by Barcelona, to raise funds for the changes that club feels it needs…
Alex Song wanting to come back to Arsenal, because he isn’t getting a chance at Barca.
How about a TRIPLE SWOOP from Barcelona.
Cesc / Song / David Villa.
going into today’s match…
Arsenal have NOT beaten ANY TEAM in the current Top 4 all season.
Only 1 win over any team in the Top 6, (over the Totts).
We aren’t that competitive against ANY of the better teams!
Though THEO has us in the lead today, even if he was offsides!!
i think man united are a legitimate threat. all of their strikers are, arguably, better than all of ours. if they score a goal or two, it can be curtains for arsenal. regardless of who they play, winning is a habit. while they may have nothing to play for, habits are hard to break. we’ll see.
many are upset about van persie announcing his desire to leave arsenal on his personal website but arsenal are known to be liars. van persie wanted the true, unfiltered version of why he was leaving to be the one released. hate it or love it, he just said how he felt. i don’t think he wanted to leave arsenal. i think he wanted to play good football and compete for championships. if he could have done that at arsenal, i believe he would have stayed. for 8 years, he watched arsenal sell all of their best players and show little to no desire to win or play good football. his contract was up. it’s either stay with what seems to be a sinking ship or, like lebron james, seek out his dreams by taking his talents elsewhere. this isn’t confusing or infuriating to me at all.
as for cesc’s departure, he didn’t need to say anything about leaving arsenal. barcelona was his original home town club and the best team in the world and they wanted cesc to come back. what more needs to be said? as for clichy and toure, no one cared enough to ask why they left.
totally agree on RVP… why would he want to stay at Arsenal, when he knew they were not going to bring in players to attempt to compete for trophies, and were going to continue to sell off their best players to the highest bidders… Arsenal got EXACTLY what they wanted for Van Persie, they got the CASH.
Cesc, I think he loves Arsenal, but not as much as he loves Barcelona… even if we won trophies at Arsenal, he still would have gone back to Barcelona…
I don’t even rule out Cesc coming back to Arsenal at some point.
Van Persie is going to score today, and knock Arsenal out of the Top 4.
It’s written in the stars!
;)
Because United have nothing to play for… Arsenal have a legit chance to get points in the match. If United had anything to play for… we’d get beat.
We are not competitive with United any more… thus its not even a rivalry.
Sad, but true.
It depends on how we play… aggressive or tentative… a kick in the park, or with intensity.
If Arsenal go at them with some fierce determination, they can take the game… because human nature says United won’t be bothered with a hard fight. They don’t need it.
In regard to Robin Van Persie… frankly, its only Arsenal supporters who think negatively of him… and that’s 100% sour grapes.
He’s a great player. He was the reason we were Top 4 last season. And Arsenal CHOSE to sell him to Manchester United for CA$H. These are facts that you can dance around all you like… but they don’t change the reality.
Arsenal gave Manchester United the league this year… for 24 Million GBP.
Both teams got exactly what they wanted. Arsenal got money, United won the trophy.
