Arsenal v Manchester United through the Years

Well since we don’t play until Monday, I didn’t want to be too early and get my pre-game write-up done now. That would be just insane of me right. Instead, I just conducted a rather impromptu twitter survey to identify some tasty Arsenal versus Man United match ups.

If we’re completely honest the last couple seasons the match ups haven’t meant much. We were always looking to “stake” our title credentials, in this one, we are actually looking to keep hold on first place. So this match actually means something. So without further adieu, here are some classics for you to discuss.

1958 Arsenal 4 – Man United 5

The last league game before Man United’s terrible Munich accident. This is by accounts a historic gem and in a day when so much acrimony is displayed between fans of each side, it was the home side fans who gave a rousing display of support to the United visitors. It was a wide open game and each team fought till the final whistle for more goals. Then 5 days later the world turned upside down for United.

1979 FA Cup Final: Arsenal 3 – United 2

The 1979 FA Cup Final was  played on 12 May 1979 at old Wembley.  It is widely regarded as one of the greatest-ever finishes in an FA Cup final. For over 85 minutes the game had been unremarkable, with Arsenal taking a 2–0 half time lead through goals from Brian Talbot and Frank Stapleton . In the 86th minute, however, Gordon McQueen  scored following a set-piece, and two minutes later Sammy McIlroy dribbled past two Arsenal players to score a dramatic equaliser. With the game poised for extra time, United’s celebrations proved short-lived, as Alan Sunderland scored a last-minute winner, making the final result Arsenal 3–2 Manchester United. This match is often referred to as the “Five-minute Final”.

The 1979 FA Cup was the only major trophy that Arsenal won during the seven-year management of  Terry Neill, who was appointed in 1976 and remained as manager until he was dismissed in 1983.

It was also the only cup final that Manchester United reached under the management of  Dave Sexton who had been appointed as manager in 1977 and remained there until 1981 when he was sacked having failed to bring a major trophy to the club.

9 November 1997 Arsenal 3 – United 2

Regarded by some United fans as the real turning point as to when Arsenal under Wenger became a real “pain in the Arse” for the Mancs. At the friendly confines of Higbury it was as energized as any Arsenal v United match could’ve been. It was not without it’s controversy as the ref could have called a penalty on Nutty’s take down of a very young Paul Scholes. Overall though the match was dominated by Arsenal, especially in the second half where the Gunners did not let United get a sniff of the goal.

14 March 1998 Arsenal 1 – Man United 0

Pretty much a dead lock through out the match with each team having opportunities. Menninger was in goal for an injured Seaman. Pre-game all the discussion talking about his run of form and that he could very well be “Arsenal’s future number 1.” It wasn’t until the 80th minute when the breakthrough finally came. Overmars who had been Arsenal’s primary threat on the day got the winner. A long high ball forward from Keown was flicked on by Bergkamp’s head, and then again by Anelka into the path of Overmars, cutting into the box from the left. He nodded it forward and slotted it underneath Schmeichel’s body. It was the first time Arsenal scored at Old Trafford in 7 years.

8 May 2002, Arsenal 1 – United 0

Is there anything sweeter than winning the title on your rival’s soil? How about winning the double on your rival’s soil? The 1-0 win at Old Trafford would match the feat the Gunners had done four years earlier. It was a match that had all the makings for a fire storm. Scholes needlessly took out Edu, Neville got in on the act with a tackle on Wiltord and Keaneo and Vierra got into as only those two could.  It should be noted that for most of the first half United had the better of the play. It wasn’t until a few minutes after half time that Arsenal really tested the United defence with an off shot by Edu. But Arsenal would seal the win and seal the double on Wiltord’s 100th appearance. In a scene of things to come for Arsenal fans Mikael Silvestre gifted possession to Wiltord, who found Freddie Ljungberg on one of his patented runs through the middle of the pitch. The Arsenal legend beat Blanc before forcing a fine save from Barthez, but Wiltord was on hand to steer home a composed finish.

13 February 2003 Arsenal 2 – United 0

It would later be be known as the match where Beckham got a boot to the head but it was a match that was part of Arsenal’s match towards retaining the FA Cup.  It was obvious from the get go, that United were going to get a “boot in” on Arsenal. Even then the notion was that the club didn’t like it. In the end there were four yellow cards, 3 for United and 1 for Vierra (supposedly just for being Vierra). The match also featured a bit of Karma for one Ryan Giggs who missed a sitter (his 1999 goal is constant fodder to rile up the OT faithful). The goals a deflection by Edu, coming off of Beckham and then off of Rio Ferdinands face (in case you were wondering how he got so ugly). The second was pure class by Wiltord in the 52nd minute which put the match beyond all doubt. It also sealed Fergie’s rage.

21 September 2003 Arsenal 0 – United 0

I think this video says it all. But I will let the words of the BBC spell it out:

Ruud van Nistelrooy was the centre of attention as another clash between Manchester United and Arsenal finished in controversial circumstances.

The Dutch striker smacked an injury time penalty against the crossbar to spark an unsavoury reaction from the Arsenal players.

The Beeb forgot to mention he clearly dived for the penalty. You just don’t see reactions from players like this any more.

21 May 2005 Arsenal 0 – Manchester United 0 FA Cup Final (Arsenal win 5-4 on Pens)

This cup was special in so many way, now more than so because it was the last trophy and it was the last time this special squad would be together. How fitting it was Vierra who would seal the win?

Fred you are totally right, the snoods are for wusses. I wish our players wouldn’t wear them, but what the hell. In my opinion The Brits are all pussies when it comes to the cold. They think the 30s and even 40s (Fahrenheit) is cold! Nonsense!

Patrice Evra should SHUT THE FUCK UP immediately. If Arsenal gets their asses whooped on monday, and even if Evra is the MOTM that still gives him no right to talk about other teams’/players’ immaturity AT ALL. Anyone remember the name of the French assclown who was the “captain” of that whole team of French assclowns at the World Cup in June? Oh yeah, his fucking name was Patrice Evra. That shameful display Mr. Evra was your responsibility as “Captain” (I have a hard time applying that title to someone who’d let their team devolve to such a state), and therefore you have no right to call out other players or teams about any failings or shortcomings for the rest of your entire career (or afterwards should you-god forbid- enter coaching or punditry) you fucking ASSCLOWN.

When he mocked Arsenal for winning nothing in 5 years, he forgotten (or probably never even knew about it) his own manager’s first 6 seasons at Man Utd. I wonder if United were merely a “training center” back then?

    • Fred 11 December, 2010 at 23:19 Log in to Reply

What Evra says or his record should be irrelevant – and he is a big-mouthed boor.

That said, our team is filled with TOO many players who feel they have arrived and dont work as hard and are not as disciplined as they should be. This kind of comments make for good shock therapy … hopefully.

Personally I wont mind if an opposition player makes this type of comments every once in a while.

The big question now is HOW will the team respond to this very public calling out? Will they act all petulant, refusing to shake hands, throwing pizza, getting red carded and all … or will they just shut up, dig deep and WIN?

The manner of their play on Monday will tell us a lot about the players’ REAL character.

The time for excuses is over.

Nice new interface DAG! I thought I went to a wrong site when I first log back on! Normally I don’t like the dark skin cos it made my eyes sore, but gotta say this new design is classy! Brilliant with the attached videos as well, can tell you really put your heart in it to make this site grows.

So City are now tied with Arsenal for 1st place.
Tottenham can pull to with 1 point of Chelsea & 3 of the Top, with a win tomorrow against Chelsea.

The league now has a handful of teams who feel they have a chance to win the Title… due to Chelsea’s bad run of play and injuries, and no dominant team.

Realistically. If we are to be considered a title contender, we have to WIN against Chelsea and/or Man United.
Evra can run his mouth, but if we don’t do anything about it, he’s right, we are FRAUDS.
Our record against the BIG TWO is horrendous recently.
We don’t deserve shit, if we can’t beat the best.

I think we have a legitimate chance to win on Monday.
But if we lose… we’re FRAUDS again.
I don’t care what the circumstances are either way. Bad call, goal off someones ass, botched penalty… the excuses have to end.
a WIN is necessary to make a claim and send a message that we are REAL CONTENDERS.

BIG NEWS making the rounds of the English press – Carlos Tevez has turned in a transfer request.

    • stag133 11 December, 2010 at 20:06 Log in to Reply

This has been ongoing. He is a BIG part of what makes them a contender. If he goes, I think they lose a key element to their team, especially with their other hard man, Bellamy, loaned to Cardiff.

I believe he’d be worth just about ANY price tag… especially for a team like Arsenal… but I think he wants to play in Argentina, and be close to home and family. He has talked about walking away from football for about a year now… and he doesn’t get on with Mancini, because he does NOT want to be subbed at the end of matches… he WANTS to play til the end… he’s a warrior.

How about Cesc to Barca, and use the money for Tevez to Arsenal.
      :-))

    • OziKenyan 11 December, 2010 at 23:27 Log in to Reply

Apparently yeterday was only Mancini’s 3rd win in the league without Tevez in the lineup. Big stat that. They will miss him!

  6. Fred 11 December, 2010 at 17:12 Log in to Reply

To be honest, the snoods are bit pancy. The only reason we defend it is because the culprits are Arsenal players.

This snood thing combined with Eboue wearing girly tights are the kind of things that cause teams to target us even more for crunchy tackles.

  7. Fred 11 December, 2010 at 17:05 Log in to Reply

I think those Evra comments present an excellent opportunity for the team … but will they utilize it and get appropriately fired up? I hope so.

What I don’t want to see is Nasri (or any of the other guys) petulantly refusing to shake Evra’s hand or any of that nonsense. I dont want to see unnecessary over the top tackles (we will just rack up the cards and probably get one of our players sent off).

The ONLY real response to the comment is to go to the game HUMBLED. The players should just accept the comments and WORK THEIR ASSES OFF. Press, run, harry, follow their man, stay alert and play with sufficient discipline, power and purpose. And a fair bit of sacrifice as well (am looking at you, Alex Song).

Then after scraping through a hard-won win, you can now go to Evra, shake his hand and say “see you at the emirates, bitch!”. Then exchange jerseys.

That is the proper way to deal with this. Say whatever AFTER winning the game.

If our players go the “oh my feelings are so hurt, I wont shake your hands” route, just put all your money on a sure fire Arsenal loss.

I agree 100% nip: If there is one club I truly hate it is Man U. Obviously I dislike Spurs and Chelsea as well, but I especially loathe United. They are my least favorite team in any sport in any country, bar none.

Great posting DAG. It’s tough having to wait through the weekend, however….

One thing that helps pass the time are the other results and seeing how they affect the YAMA fantasy league. Checking the line-ups of some of my closest rivals, I am deeply shocked and saddened to see that people are leaving their United players in their line-ups and some even have one of them as their captain (double points)!

    Shocking!

I guess we know what some think of our chances at OT…..

    • OziKenyan 11 December, 2010 at 14:57 Log in to Reply

It’s called jinxing HT. If I have Nani captain, then he’ll do f-all. Same with Rooney (in my other fantasy team). Though it didn’t work too well when I made Drogba captain against us. I suppose one could say that I’m jinxing Arsenal… Hmmm.

Oh and yes, I do think Utd is the favourite to win on Monday…

    This is hilarious.

Alex Ferguson has previously said: “Real men don’t wear snoods.”

Rio Ferdinand has said: “U won’t see a Man Utd player wearing a snood.”

I suppose real men / ManU players / fans just shag around prostitutes and cheat on their wives and call opposition managers as a paedophile.

If there one club I truly hate it is ManU.

I would just love it if we smash them on Monday night. Just love it.

-“Arsenal have only ever scored eight goals in 18 Premier League games at Old Trafford and no more than one in any single game.”

Wow!! I did not realize that. Definitely puts me in a different mood going into this match. We aren’t as good this season as we were in the 98-05 years, but neither are they, so I guess we’ll see. Way to bring me down man… but I guess facts are facts.

-“Arsenal have conceded a penalty in four of their last seven Premier League visits to Old Trafford.”

Big fucking surprise. I’d like to see a ranking of each team’s home ground, in order of how many PK’s have been called against the visiting team since the start of the PL. Hundred bucks says OT takes the cake. On that note, anyone know who the ref is gonna be?

    • nipuna 11 December, 2010 at 05:17 Log in to Reply

Seems like it will be Howard Webb.

    • OziKenyan 11 December, 2010 at 05:42 Log in to Reply

Howard Webb (from the same link):

Howard Webb has officiated this fixture three times with both sides winning once and one draw.

The last time Arsenal lost a game where Howard Webb was the referee was at Old Trafford in April 2008. Since then the Gunners have won six and drawn three of the nine games with the Rotherham-based official in charge.

Love the article DAG. I wonder how many of the current players even realize the history between the two. Hopefully Pires enlightened them during his time there earlier this season.

Here’s some decidedly depressing reading from http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/10122010/58/premier-league-match-facts-manchester-united-v-arsenal.html

-Arsenal’s record in their last 10 games in all competitions against Man Utd and Chelsea is W0 D1 L9 F5 A22.

-Wayne Rooney scored his first Premier League goal, his first league goal for Man Utd and his 100th Premier League goal against Arsenal.

-Rooney scored in both Premier League meetings with Arsenal last season and has seven in 16 league games against the Gunners in total.

-Arsenal have had at least five players booked in each of their last three Premier League games at Old Trafford.

-Arsenal have only ever scored eight goals in 18 Premier League games at Old Trafford and no more than one in any single game.

-In the last nine home games against Arsenal in the Premier League, United have either scored twice or not at all.

-Arsenal have conceded a penalty in four of their last seven Premier League visits to Old Trafford.

-Arsenal have picked up 17 points on the road this season, the best away record in the Premier League.

-Man Utd have picked up the most points on their own turf of any team in the Premier League this season, 22.

-10 of Dimitar Berbatov’s 11 Premier League goals this season have been scored with Wayne Rooney on the pitch.

p.s.- I love the new system of recent comments at the top. Saves a bunch of scrolling. The downside to it is that since replies are posted further down, they might not be read at all. Not sure how to fix that: seen some sites where replies are basically another post with the post they’re replying to as well as the reply, but that could make the threads that much longer. Either way, great job. Appreciate it.

    LOVE the videos and article.
The Win in December of 1997 was the greatest sporting event I have ever been to… strangers HUGGING each other, partying around the streets of Highbury post match… the players yelling and waving out the windows of the dressing room post game…
It was just an incredible atmosphere, and everything that the English Soccer experience should be about. Highbury was no library at that time.

I remember Patrick Vieira’s last kick in an Arsenal shirt to win the FA Cup dearly. Our last trophy. A fitting way to end his Arsenal career. Outplayed all match, we won ANYWAY…

If you told me at that point we’d be trophy-less until 2011, I’d have called the police to take you away in a straight jacket.

Nice look DAG. A bit dark and austere, although one could argue it matches the mood of a few posters and might be appropriate if the season goes downhill ;)

Remember those games as if they were yesterday, apart from the 1979 one of course. The game at highbury in 97 was a real emotional rollercoaster, a game of the sort that was quite common back then but you don’t see too often in today’s climate, what with the snoods and players being all nicey nicey on twitter. The late 90s was the pinnacle in some ways, a fusion of the old school like Adams, Keown, Pallister……..and the foreign talents who learned the significance of these games from such stalwarts.

I like the classy new design DAG. Undecided about the backward scrolling though.

Another great victory against ManU was the game at Old Trafford we won 1-0 Adebayor scored the winner set up by Fabregas i think that was the same game in which Lehman made an unbelievable save that prevented Solskaer scoring an equaliser.

My most memorable game was the one where we won the league at OT, when ManU tried to kick us off the park. I remember telling everyone that we would win the league by winning the game not by simply drawing. It was a fantasic result that i don’t think can be topped as that game meant so much.

Great idea for an article DAG, and an even better list!

To that list, however I would add the following:

    1990:
Both teams are deducted points after the match at OT. A fight broke out after Brian McClair and another Utd player relentlessly kicked Nigel Winterburn as he lay on the ground after a tackle on McClair. The points deduction, however, did not stop a relentless Arsenal team from winning the 90/91 league title, the last they would win in the “Old First Division”.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjsASf5z9ac

    1999:
Memories of this match are best to suppress if you are a Gooner. But, alas, it was an epic match that had everything epic matches do. If you look at a checklist of the events that have taken place in football’s most epic matches, this one had them all:
    -brilliant 1st half goal (Beckham)
-equally brilliant 2nd half equalizer (Bergkamp)
-goal controversially disallowed by offsides call (Arsenal)
-captain getting sent off after 2 yellows (Keane)
-late foul committed in the box (Utd)
    -great PK save (Schmeichel)
-incredible extra time winner (does it need to be said?)
-I want to say this was also the last-ever Replay in an FA Cup semi.
