Well, it’s probably not the match you want to have after a listless draw to open the season but it’s better now than as the saying goes, “a cold Tuesday night” in Stoke. It’s match day two and Arsenal find themselves travelling to the hostile environs of the Britannia stadium. If Arsenal are going to measure themselves for the season, this is the place to do it.

Of the four matches that have occurred at the Britannia between the two teams Stoke hold an advantage over Arsenal with 2W 1L 1D. Arsenal for their part absolutely decimate Stoke when they come calling to London. But we’re not in London and the perennial thorn in the Gunner’s side that is the Tony Pulis managed team gets a crack at us early this year.

There is no love lost between Wenger and Pulis. Though today Wenger went out of his way (sort of) to praise the improved style that Stoke displayed last season by saying they kept it on the ground more last season. Heady praise coming from Wenger who you know hates everything that route one merchant Pulis espouses and represents.

Arsenal did not get out of the blocks running and yet, while they did not stumble per se they did play a match that clearly showed that the new players are going to take time to bed in. Whether it was Podolski nearly taking out Cazorla as they both teed up a left footed shot that Podolski would wiff on and that Santi would miss just wide left, or passes just missing, Arsenal were clearly a team still getting use to each other.

Patience these days is not a virtue Gooners are blessed with. Now entering an 8th year without silverware many people want results and they want it now. But is it realistic to expect that three new players are going to bed in right away? The players that have been brought in are class in their own right but they will take time. Except maybe Cazorla who looks already at ease with the game in England.  But Giroud and Podolski are going to take a few games to get their feet underneath them. The question will be will anyone step up to fill the gaps while their engines get going?

Last week Gervinho showed some delightful stuff attacking the left and basically terrorizing Sunderland all day. It’s a shame we didn’t get something from that as it was there all day long. If Gervinho does find his shot, his ability to get past players is going to be immense. Theo looked his sporadic self. There were glimpses but he also looked like someone still getting used to the new shape of things going on at Arsenal.

Stoke however, are not going to be friendly enough to allow the Gunners to warm up. Arsenal going to need a game plan to beat a tough side. Sure, they should beat them. Talent-wise Arsenal are better but as the first week has already shown for many EPL fans, talent means diddly squat. It takes effort and focus and Arsenal are going to need to both.

In the Guardian on Friday they examined the strategic decisions facing both managers and it’s a good read. They ask the questions can Pulis allow Arsenal to control possession of the game and get settled and take shots or will Pulis look to put pressure on Arsenal and take away their passing lanes, something they were very good at last season in the ending match. It should be noted though that Mikel Arteta was not in that match and his presence in holding and getting back the ball all season last year was immense.

One thing Pulis may not be able to rely on is narrowing his pitch to suit his style. This season all EPL pitches must be of similar size to conform to standards throughout Europe. This means that Rory Delap won’t have such an easy chance at getting his patented long throws in to the 18 yard box.  Lee Dixon says he has the formula for beating that throw in any case. What Dixon proposes is having all your  players stand on the goalline before rushing forward in unison to clear the throw,  much like a hockey side defending a penalty corner.

Whether Wenger along with his new number two will have such similar ideas  remains to be seen.

As the Guardian suggests and as many of us already know its unlikely that Wenger will veer too far away from his possession based philosophy. However, if Stoke do press, then what should Arsenal do? First, the ball has to stay on the deck and the passes have to be quick and crisp. Last week against Sunderland we did not seem to move the ball with any speed and the Blackcats were able to get back and clog up the space. We have speed through the middle and in the flanks. It needs to be used both in movement and passing as a way to tire out Stoke. Very few teams can keep up constant pressing for 90 minutes. If Stoke want to press and press constantly then Arsenal are going to need to come into this game better prepared for a faster game.

Speed kills and Arsenal have it. If they don’t use it they are done. Patience is one thing but not slow deliberative kind of patience. Patience to make Stoke work will pay off if Arsenal play to their strengths but it can’t be as lethargic as last week or Arsenal will hurt in this one.

How the Match Should Play Out:

It will play out exactly as how we think it will. The Britannia will be very hostile as it was to Wenger and his charges last season. Stoke will look to press Arsenal and the Gunner’s success will depend on how quickly they move the ball. I’m torn on the lineup and it could very easily be a ‘strong’ line up to combat Stoke’s physical nature. That means Giroud could play up top with Podolski on the left. But if we’re intent on playing our speed game I think Gervinho goes on the left and Poldi up as the target man.  In either scenario Arsenal need to keep the ball moving and tire out their hosts.  It’s going to be a close affair but I think the Britannia jinx can be broken.

 Player to Watch:

Arsenal. Santi Cazorla. Someone as comfortable on the ball and holding onto it as Cazorla is going to be essential Arsenal having any chance of success.  The key will be how well he responds to the physical nature of play Stoke bring to the game.

Stoke. Peter Crouch. The big gangly Englishman is their key target. He fits in nicely to the route one nature of Stoke. But he has also shown moments that he is not just a big target to throw the ball to.

The Final Word:

Some time today it is expected that Liverpool will announce the signing of Nuri Sahin on a season long loan. This will likely frustrate some Gooners as on Monday it was widely speculated in every corner of the press and twittersphere that a deal with Arsenal had been completed and Sahin was due in to London.

However, as Sid Lowe reported the move to Arsenal was something Mourinho didn’t want. As much as Sahin wanted to , Mourinho would rather that the player didn’t go on loan to strengthen a possible Champion’s League opponent. Additionally, Arsenal were very much looking for an option to buy and Madrid weren’t ready to really go down that route with Sahin.

Liverpool listened to everyone of Madrid’s demands on the loan. They will get Sahin for a year without any likelihood of purchasing the player. They will pay 70% of his wages whereas Arsenal were set to  60%. Additionally, the loan fee that Arsenal were going to pay (and that Madrid agreed with) was around £2 million. Liverpool reportedly offered a loan fee of £5 million. If that’s true then when all is said and done with wages and loan fee Liverpool will pay £12 million for a player that they are basically serving as a finishing school for.

Now don’t get me wrong. I would’ve loved to have him here. He is a very talented player. Actually make that extremely. He is an extremely talented player. But does it make sense to take a player on loan for the cost of a transfer fee that could get you a decent player as a transfer? Sometimes it makes sense to walk away from deals that aren’t logical.

Sure Liverpool are getting a player of quality but at what cost?

Wenger did mention in his Friday presser that Arsenal were not done and have 1 to 2 additional targets they are aiming for and that the last week of the window would be a busy one for Arsenal. Park looks set for a season long loan at Celta Vigo in La Liga and Bendtner looks set for Italy reportedly. There is also talk that Arshavin has been in Russia all week trying to finalize a move to Zenit St. Petersburg.  There also likely other moves out set to happen. In other words people while all focus today and tomorrow is on Stoke – Monday through Friday is going to be a very interesting time for the Gunners.

That’s all for today. We’ll be back after the match. Until then Stay Goonerish!!

    Stoke always caused trouble but the first two weeks have shown a lack of chances. Giroud had two extremly good/surprising shots on goal nthat if had he connected would be both up for goal of the season.
    Cazorla is clearly our best player and it isn’t even close. The workrate he has to put up is ridiculous and like Cesc he will wear down and eventually get hurt. If we had two players with the quality of Santi
    in our Squad we had a fighting chance with the current squad we will not contend.

    Whenever I hear replacement by comitte it means we go for quantity over quality. I think Podolski is an upgrade on the wings but Giroud so far is such a downgrade that we better hope Cazorla can elevate him with his brilliance.

    Funny, I came away from WATCHING :-) this mornings performance with a sense of being pleased at the 0-0, the defensive show and the physical competition we displayed whilst being frustrated at the ‘no goals’ and hence no 3 points.

    It’s good we caught Stoke away now rather than during the wet cold winter. Whilst 1 point is disappointing the mental ‘damage’ is not great.

    I liked the robustness of the side today. Most players demonstrated a desire and comfort in ‘mixing it’ with Stoke. The referee often let play run even when the challenges ‘blowable’, interestingly it was often us delivering the robust challenge – good stuff. Hope it continues and becomes part of this teams DNA.

    No goals but Giroud and Podolski did enough for me to suggest they are capable of making an impact in the EPL. Always good to remind ourselves that even greats like Bergkamp and Henry took a while to hit the back of the net. Giroud played well with his back to goal, his driven dipping shot/lob was outstanding and hints at a guy that has ‘technical skill’ and style to go with his robust side. Podolski seems to have an agressive attitude which is good.

    Gervinho looked a bit Walcott-ish, oh dear. Funny (not), but both these players just seem a bit bereft of ideas once they get into the final third. And I was more than a little disappointed in seeing the attacking aspect of our team (which has totally changed in personnel) look a mirror-image of previous versions. All passy passy up to the opposing penalty box and then no clues on how to create a goal from that static approach play. Deep sigh. I can only summise that Wenger’s coaching methods replicate this approach through their training. It’s just too static and allows really really average sides to simply get back and defend. Why Wenger can’t see the need for the attack to be faster is one of the great modern day mysteries – right up there with cancer and America’s obsession with politics.

    In midfield Diaby, Cazorla and Arteta looked good. I’m not too hopeful of seeing a newbie in this area – sorry. There are too many midfield bodies already in Wenger’s head.

    So that’s about it. Truth is 2 x 0-0 results are not as bad as some papers will paint it. When you’ve totally recaliberated an attack with non-EPL players and a almost zero pre-season it will take 10 games to get any sense of fluidity. The objective is to accumulate points (even slowly with some draws) and don’t damage the teams mental condition.

    I’d still like to see a clever-Trevor type player come in. Someone to help Cazorla. Good close control, ability to cross a ball, someone who can run at goal get tripped and get penalties. The guy doesn’t need to play every game but be a ‘go to’ type of guy. I just feel we need that on the right in place of Gervinho. Cazorla can be that guy but then he can’t be the no.10 conduit and metronome. He needs a bit of help. So flick Walcott and bring in ‘that’ guy.

    clearly, we missed van persie but have we missed alex song?

    last season, song led the team in assists, many which came after the hour mark and when arsenal needed a goal. song would often bypass the pretty soccer (which hadn’t worked for the preceeding hour) and look to put the ball on the foot of a guy who was going to actually score. arsenal seemed to miss that “bypass” quality in the past two games.

    personally, i think we miss the cameroonian already. idealistically, he represents that if you work hard enough, you can make it at arsenal. he was the strongest player in our midfield who knew how to get the ball to the strikers in good space.

    i saw an article where song says he never wanted to leave arsenal. sound familiar (adebayor). no wonder van persie decided to release his statement on his own website, instead of trusting wenger to his vices. since song is gone, i wonder who could replace him. i mentioned dembele, as i have since 2010, because he’s physically as strong as song, yet more dynamic. he can play anywhere in the midfield. someone compared him to vieira and that is accuarate in that he does everything well as a midfielder. january would have been a good time, before moussa signed a contract extension, but he’s a fulham player. it’s too late, but we’ll see what happens. since sparky signed him in ’10, i said he was too good for fulham. now, everybody sees that.

    • stag133 27 August, 2012 at 00:22 Log in to Reply

      @joshuad, yes. read the same article about Song… never wanted to leave Arsenal… just wanted to talk about a contract extension, and they rebuffed him every time…
      and then Wenger slandered him, saying he was lazy, late for practice, etc…

      yeah, RVP’s the bad guy, right?
      actually, he looks like the smart guy…

        @stag133,
        And I do hope RVP and Song do win something this season!

    • tAi 27 August, 2012 at 14:56 Log in to Reply

      @joshuad,
      Josh – kinda agree on Song there. Song did many assist for RVP last season. Opening up defenders and freeing up RVP with lobs and nice passes.

  4. George 26 August, 2012 at 19:58 Log in to Reply

    Really disappointed in Gervinho, for someone who was so promising in Pre-Season he’s really gone back to his post ACN self. Really really Poor today and last week, definitely start Theo next week against Liverpool, a team that we know ain’t gonna park the bus. Plus he was decent against Swansea last season, and Pool are going to play a similar way.

    Should be an interesting last week of the transfer window, definitely need some new additions lets hope Gazidis and Hill Wood are busy until 11:00pm Friday. As the saying goes, Spend some F***ing Money.

  5. stag133 26 August, 2012 at 15:22 Log in to Reply

    That’s 180 minutes without a goal… fortunately, we’ve played 2 teams without much scoring prowess, so we’ve not allowed one either.

    I’d love to know why seemingly always have a bunch of players who refuse to shoot the f’n ball… its PAINFUL to watch.

    Gervinho is painful to watch. He can’t shoot straight … can’t shoot with any power… and isn’t an accurate passer either.
    So he runs around and around and around… getting absolutely nowhere.

    0-0.
    Boring Boring Arsenal, are back.

    Sahin signs for Liverpool.
    Window closes in 5 days.

    • tAi 26 August, 2012 at 15:53 Log in to Reply

      @stag133,

      3 draws for the first 3 games (Pool included) is not bad if we want to finish 5th.
      Don’t really matter stag, 5 days, we aint getting anyone. Chapter closed already.
      NOW lets enjoy the ride hohohohohohohohohoh

      • stag133 27 August, 2012 at 00:25 Log in to Reply

        @tAi, we want to finish 5th?
        I’d rather we finish 8th… than finish 5th!
        It would be better in the long range…

        but while I agree, we’re probably done brining players in…
        I expect us to sell a few more players so that we make a profit in the Summer Window.
        And…
        after all, that’s what its all about…

      @DaAdminGooner,Big test for Mannone today.
      Hopefully it’s more like Fulham from a few years back rather than his
      last time out (at Olympiakos, kicking at a ball he could’ve grabbbed).
      Also, interesting to see all the new boys starting while Theo negotiates
      his new deal as a supersub….

      Off to the GDC for my final “home” match until 2013….

  7. OziKenyan 26 August, 2012 at 04:03 Log in to Reply

    Hazard is class. No doubt.

    But the man that outshone everyone else yesterday has to be Dembele. What an absolute monster. Reminded me of Vieira from back in the day. He’s not quite like Vieira but what a game he had.

    Tackles, massive physical presence, incisive passing, almost never loses the ball, either when passing or in possession, drives the team forwards. Don’t think Arsenal would make the move for him, but if not, I hope he stays at Fulham.

    • Caribkid 26 August, 2012 at 14:21 Log in to Reply

      @OziKenyan,

      Agreed Ozi, I am a big Dembele fan and he is tremendously versatile. Has played basicall all over the MF and Forward collective.

    • tAi 26 August, 2012 at 15:54 Log in to Reply

      @OziKenyan,

      Hope he be at Arsenal.

  8. George 25 August, 2012 at 21:09 Log in to Reply

    Much prefer Giroud to start up top, just to give us a bit more physical presence offensively and defensively. Plus Lukas has looked best IMO when he plays on the Left, and Walcott will be worse than ineffective if he starts as he’ll just get out muscled and there will be no space in behind for him to exploit. We’d be better off starting Gervinho or even the Ox at RW

  9. Caribkid 25 August, 2012 at 18:38 Log in to Reply

    For all who doubted Hazard, 6 assists and 1 goal in 1 1/2 games. The kid will be a world beater. Kagawa and Dembele = World class.

    Unfortunately, we have none of them.

    • George 25 August, 2012 at 19:33 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid,
      We have someone who has 45 caps for Spain, and is widely considered the best player in La Liga not playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid. That’s not too bad is it?

      • Caribkid 26 August, 2012 at 02:15 Log in to Reply

        @George,

        Not bad at all, however, we do need another Versatile, creative player with end product.

        Wilshere is the closest to that on the current squad but even before his injury never showed end product. That is expected as this stage of his career and just like Cesc, will need a few years to round off his game. With song gone and an inconsistent Walcott who shows up once every 5 games or so the burden will have to be placed on Gervinho and OX to do so. Could happen, but it’s a big ask.

    • Joak 25 August, 2012 at 21:11 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid,
      He is doing very very well, but, they are 1 goal and 4 assists…
      don’t count the penaltys received…

      Cazorla created 7 chances on his first game, perfectly could have been
      2/3 assists :)

      • Caribkid 26 August, 2012 at 02:06 Log in to Reply

        @Joak,

        He was officially given 3 assists for the first game so penalties scored as a result does count.

        He also missed a few chances to score and assist also. Can’t count the maybes.

    another beauty for RVP, starting where he left off last season…
    he does seem to be waiting for passes when he has some room, like at Arsenal, but those don’t always come at United!

    I don’t think you can figure out “how it will play out”… with anyone, this early in the season, and especially with Arsenal filled with all the new players.
    Frankly, don’t know what to expect… could win 3-0, or lose 2-1… but a draw
    would be a lot more likely.

    still nothing on the additional arrivals… and departures.
    guess we are waiting until the final day, as usual.

    Swansea 3 0 Fat Sam

    Wonderful display of passing, possession and cutting edge attack by Swansea. A little shaky against set pieces and will probably be punished by the better teams. However, great team to watch and I can see them creating a few upsets this season against the big boys.

    Good coaching by Rodgers and now by Laudrup shows how to effectively use a team of no names to over achieve while playing great ball at the same time.

    Please take note Arsene!!!!!!!

  13. Caribkid 25 August, 2012 at 15:07 Log in to Reply

    Our biggest problem against Stoke will be defending set pieces and balls over the top during the run of play. That’s where we will Koz as although not the tallest is our best defender in the air.

    Mert is tall but has very little vertical leap and we should see an interesting duel between him and Crouchy. Stoke also has two other big, bustling strikers with significant aerial aptitude in Jerome and Jones and either one will prove a test for TV and the Fb’s.

    To combat their height and aerial advantage I would have to see Giroud, Diaby and Santos in our starting line-up. If poldi starts on the left with Giroud up front that leaves Theo and Gervinho fighting for the remaining forward spot with the nod going to the latter based on early season form.

    CZ
    Jenkinson, BFG, TV, Santos
    Diaby, Arteta, Carzola
    Poldi, Giroud, Gervinho

  14. Mrugesh 25 August, 2012 at 12:08 Log in to Reply

    Sticking to last week’s line-up is the only wise thing to do I guess. Too much shuffling will only affect the team balance. Gervinho seems to be in good touch. Giroud and Ox offer good offensive options from the bench. Just need Sanga back in the squad and we are good to go!
