Arsenal and Arsene Wenger contend that they answered their critics by their performance on Monday night at the Madjeski.  As much as I’d like to jump on that band wagon, I’m not quite there yet. It was good performance, but there still is long road and a long season to go where, as we all know, any permeation of things can happen.

All that remains for the team to do is focus on the game that they have to play. And for Arsenal that one takes place tomorrow at the DW stadium where they face a fading Wigan squad. Arsenal should feel buoyed by their performance. It was a solid performance and it was one that you would have to expect when facing an opponent like Reading.

However, they need to do it again. And do it with some level of consistency. Only then can there be any sense that the critics will be quiet.

The positive for Arsenal is they face another squad that is depleted by injuries and has only gained 4 points from their last 7 matches. Additionally, Arsenal’s away form has been solid and they head into a stadium where they continually shine. Their only loss to Wigan at the DW is a 3-2 loss in 2010.  Arsenal won the fixture last season 4-0.

For all of Wigan’s woes, their manager still garners high praise from pundits and neutrals alike. He sets his team up to play and you continually feel if he had resources he might be able to do something. He is one of the few managers who completely depends on a 3-4-3 formation.

That 3-4-3 changes though if his team snatches a lead and goes from 3 at the back to 5.  Michael Cox of Zonal Marking in his review points out that Wigan at home enjoy a lot of possession and that’s a style that should suit Arsenal. What Arsenal can’t do is let Wigan get ahead. We’ve seen how the Gunners react to a team that puts 10 men behind a ball – to say it plainly – we don’t have a clue how to unlock it.

That is why I am in favor of going with the same lineup we went out with against Reading. 3 up top with Theo leading the line. The top three of Theo, Podolski and Chamberlain were too quick for a weak Reading defense. With 3 at the back Wigan can get overwhelmed by our speed. Additionally, that speed on the wings will help spread the field and create channels for our midfield trio to have success and enjoy the space created.

We can ill-afford to come out with the mentality that was evident in matches preceeding Reading. It has to be full on bore to get through the holiday fixtures (a little aleviated now that West Ham has been postponed) and make some headway getting into January.

Additionally, the club management cannot approach things as if one win (okay 2) fixes all our ills and improvements aren’t needed. Wenger and Gazidis have been bigging up the fact we’ve come out of our financial wildnerness. While, I won’t call for exorbitant spending, I will still call for the need ot spend and improve the squad because it’s still needed. All this has to happen if we are goint to enjoy any sort of Arsenal-desired success.

It Reading hopefully was the start of it. Wigan hopefully is the continuation of it.

How the match should play out.

A lot of it depends on how Arsenal set up. If they go with the lineup we are projecting then look for the speed demons to really try and open up Wigan early. What cannot happen is letting Wigan get a lead as we mentioned previously.  If Wigan get a lead look for them to pack it in and hamper Arsenal’s creative efforts.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Theo Walcott. He already has 11 goals in all competitions this season. 2 more and he will eclipse his best season ever. He is continuing to make a case for himself – either at Arsenal – or not.

Wigan: Arouna Koné. An Ivory Coast product, his scoring prowess from Spain hasn’t exactly transferred over to England. He is still a mobile scoring threat that could give Arsenal defenders problems.

Projected Lineups:

The Final Word

Arsene deserves a lot of criticism. His faults are many and widely discussed but I am amazed at some of the flak he is getting for signing his 5 young British talents. Some even calling it a PR stunt to entice Walcott to sign. The Final Word

The man is damned if he does damned if he doesn’t. If he hadn’t locked up Wilshere and the group and they left in a few years time, it would’ve been argued that Arsenal couldn’t keep promising talent. Each one of the players signed is an international player – one even was Captain of his national team until the untimely death of Gary Speed.

Two of the players are widely regarded as some of the brightest talents England has had in recent memory and the other two while not world class are clearly showing an upward trajectory in terms of their development.

Sure the team has problems but the club should receive some kudos for locking these guys down. And maybe the whole vision of relying on foreign youth talent was the wrong way to go. Maybe it should’ve always been relying on young English talent. Well, Arsenal have that and have it better in many opinion’s over anyone else in the league.

So circumstances and fortunes have required Arsenal (and Arsene) to rethink how they develop the core of the team.  Arsene should’ve won something with the players he had here back in 08. That squad missed it’s chance and the squad that crashed out of the Carling Cup final was also a squad very close to competing for honors but for lack of mental preparedness.

Had they won then maybe it’s a different tune we are all talking now. But they didn’t and foreign players who have no life-long allegiance to England and Arsenal left. It’s easy for them. And yes, there is always the likelihood that any of these five players could be lured away in a few years time on big money deals, they’ve at least shown to some extent they are loyal to Arsenal.

That should be celebrated not chastised as some PR ploy.

It still remains to be seen if Wenger and Gazidis support that core with good foreign talent as they have implied. If they fail to do so then more criticsim is warranted, right now I am going to enjoy the fact that a top club that once took to the pitch without any English born players now boasts more than most of it’s direct competitors.

That should be lauded.

Window opens in a few days…!!!
Are we selling Theo and Arsh on day 1?
and when do we sign David Villa?
(or did I read Wenger thought he was too expensive! LoL, “class” costs “ca$h”…
that’s the difference between Arsenal and the REAL contenders for trophies…
we are looking to unearth a bargain basement gem, and then sell him 5 years later after we shine him up, and the United’s and Barcelona’s of the world, use Arsenal as a feeding system… we shine them up, and they display them next to the trophies they win.
    :)

so, the last I checked, Fulham and QPR are both in LONDON proper…
If they can manage to play tomorrow, why can’t Arsenal put a match on as well?

yes, there is a tube strike…
but we’re playing West Ham, also in London… and buses are NOT on strike…

why is the match called off?

I think its because the winner would get Arsenal Schwag… a shirt or merchandise, and the informed are AGAINST buying any Arsenal merchandise… it only puts money into the pockets of the MFers that run the club.
        ;)
        just a hypothesis!

I only have 1 Arsenal player in my fantasy league team! (Cazorla)
and he’s only been on my team for half a season. Nobody else is really worthy.

    @DAG

Your above statement, “Some even calling it a PR stunt to entice Walcott to sign.”, truly surprises me. Like others, I have not said it was a bad thing to do, but it was obviously a PR stunt to reclaim lost grace. How many times do they even have photographs of current player contract extensions? Can’t remember one.

Also, calling these 5 players a future core is stretching it a bit. Barring injury, JW is destined for greatness, Ox has immense potential and Gibbs should be a staple if he can stay healthy. Jenks and Ramsey will potentially be decent players and nothing more. Can’t be remotely compared to the previous Manu core of Neville, Neville, Kean, Giggs, Scholes, Ferdinand, etc. Even no, Manu’s British core of Evans, Young, Rooney, Ferdinand, Smalling, Welbeck, Fletcher, Carrick, Jones, Powell and Wooten is way more impressive than our “Fab Five”.

I would also contend that City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs also have British contingents which are as strong or even stronger than our current core. It’s a big deal for us because we were a French team previously. In other words DAG, our British contingent is nothing new and is also nothing special if compared to other teams in the EPL.

Take a deep breath DAG and rethink your position after analyzing the roster of other EPL teams.

      Oooops! I omitted Cleverly.

    • joshuad 24 December, 2012 at 16:02 Log in to Reply

carrib, in fairness, dag was talking about future corps with the key word being “future”. these guys are really young and it would be nice if they could develop into something special collectively. like most arsenal fans, i’m hoping for the best but time will tell. as for people believing this being a pr stunt, that’s not going away.

for years, arsenal have had what seemed to be the premier developmental program in england. many young british players have gone on from arsenal’s academy to have professional careers in football. the problem is the academy has failed to develop more players for careers at arsenal.

instead of maintaining a standard close to what the invincibles established, arsenal seem to have lowered the bar to facilitate the progression of youth players into the first team. it’s supposed to be the other way around; the academy is supposed to raise the bar to produce players good enough for the first team. the chosen few that have what it takes will push on while the many will fall by the wayside.

seemingly, there’s also a belief that the british bulldog tenacity is enough to return arsenal to future glories. sorry, but you’ve got to have ability to accompany dogged desire. there are simply too few with both the desire and the ability coming through the ranks at arsenal. contrary to popular belief, being born on the british isles does not predispose one to having the fight required. do i buy into 5 young gifted players? yes. 5 young british fighters, not so much.

with this apparent lack of ability being thrown into the first team by management, the few world class players at arsenal wanting to win trophies will continue to leave arsenal in search for silverware. when does it stop?

  7. joshuad 23 December, 2012 at 21:09 Log in to Reply

nice for arsenal to get three points on the board. goal differential is keeping arsenal in europe right now. for me, there was nothing to be too excited about. unfortunately, cazorla reverted to type by showing up all over the pitch instead of bridging midfield and attack in the final third. arsenal missed his influence there yesterday. secondly, theo had some big boys there kicking him around a little bit. figueroa, a player who’s name i threw in the hat as a potential clichy replacement a few years ago, prevented arsenal (theo) from establishing a foothold in the final third. nothing too sensational about the game one way or another. happy with the win, however.

special mention goes out to szczesny. though not 100% when he returned from injury, he’s been in really good form of late; better than last season. he’s helped arsenal win games that maybe they should have drawn. he’s keeping arsenal in europe. long may his progression continue in an arsenal shirt.

as for the final word, i’m not giving wenger flak for signing the young guys. but that photo is clearly staged for the media. two of those guys have barely been at arsenal for a year. did they really need a new contract already? what did they do that was so great? strangely enough, he hesitated to improve adebayor’s contract after he proved to be one of the best center forwards in europe.

i also don’t know if it was arsenal’s intent to isolate theo but that’s certainly what they did. i could care less about theo. he’s got an agenda and it’s all about theo. while there’s nothing wrong with looking out for #1, arsenal are going to get “flaminied” if they don’t sell that boy. if i were arsenal, i would buy ba and zaha on 1 jan and transfer list theo 2 jan. mark my words, theo is simply stalling until the transfer window closes. if no one offers more per week than arsenal, then he’ll sign an extension. think about what he claims to want (center forward). who will give him that shot and pay him triple digits every week? maybe liverpool but i don’t think anyone will. we’ll see.

    • stag133 23 December, 2012 at 22:27 Log in to Reply

Theo is looking out for Theo.
Ummm. I was unaware that he was supposed to be looking out for the club’s best interest over his own?
When the club sell players for massive profits, are they looking out for the players best interest?
Theo hasn’t done anything wrong in the equation at all… hasn’t made a big stink, has aired his grievances to the press… didn’t complain when Wenger was playing the Ox over him (by the way, he has 0 GOALS in the league)…

I am pretty sure Arsenal will not let him walk away on a free… because it wouldn’t be in the “best interest of the fat pockets of the club and board”…

      • joshuad 24 December, 2012 at 01:51 Log in to Reply

i clearly stated that there was nothing wrong with theo looking out for himself. the problem is arsenal need to look out for arsenal and not allow themselves to get played again.

arsenal paid 16 million for a kid with no experience and developed him into the player he is now. if he wants to leave he should say so, like rvp did. that’s what men do and i can respect that. even better, he could easily sign a new contract and allow arsenal to recoup some of the money they paid for him in a transfer deal.

instead, he lies saying it will take a long time to work out the deal. that’s bullshit and you know it! no contract negotiation takes that long if you’re already there, you want to sign, and the club wants you to sign. like flamini, he’s stringing the club along saying he wants to sign when he has no intention to. i said flamini wouldn’t sign back then and you all thought i was nuts. this isn’t even as tricky as the flamini predicament.

damn shame the club are allowing themselves to get played for a fool. i would bring in a guy that was clearly there to replace him and transfer list his ass. anyone with 6 million can have him. if no one signed him, i would drop him to the bench right next to chamakh for the rest of the season. who’s going to offer a bench warmer 100k a week?

        • stag133 24 December, 2012 at 04:28

yeah, poor Arsenal… they are being played by Theo Walcott!
he doesn’t want to sign long term for a club who have no intention of trying to win!
          imagine that?
he’s an evil sneaky guy, that Theo!

  8. stag133 22 December, 2012 at 14:41 Log in to Reply

    really dreary game…
as I say regularly, 3 points on the road, is always a very good thing… its not usually easy.

but we created NOTHING all day… against one of the worst teams in the EPL, (sound familiar?)

and as usual, the Genius, takes off 3 offensive players, for 3 non-offensive players…
and let Wigan control the last 10 minutes and create more chances than they had all match.
Where is the logic in doing that?
I can see 1, but when you take off everyone that can get the ball forward, you are asking for trouble.

oh, sorry… I just questioned the greatest coach that ever walked the earth?!
    my apologies. he’s coached 30 years…

that’s wonderful AA. That just means Wenger and the Board are LESS LIKELY to buy anyone of note in the January Transfer window…. and he can point to the standings and say, we are fine… we don’t need anyone coming in… 4th place is a trophy.

  9. Abdulkamal Abdullahi (@k_nonymous) 22 December, 2012 at 06:54 Log in to Reply

Since our last victory, I am actually looking forward to this game with just a teensy bit more excitement than I have in the past, Might be because of the way we dispatched Reading (after the minor scare of a potential comeback). I had hoped that our defense would be our pride and joy this season – defensively AND offensively. Conceding those two goals in the manner that we did soured, for me, what would have been a somewhat great victory. Here’s hoping that we thoroughly rout Wigan. That should make up for the cancelled Boxing Day fixture. Come on ARSENAL!!!

Note: @DAG, just a minor correction to your YAMA prediction, should be “Wigan”.
