Getting Back On Track: Arsenal v Stoke, Match Preview
On a weekend where we should be discussing and applauding Arsene Wenger for his 500th game at the helm of Arsenal we are all engaged in a discussion as to whether or not Le Professor has lost his plot. And unfortunately the opponents that his Arsenal side meet this weekend are one of the clubs that in recent memory have given them fits. This Saturday Arsene Wenger and Arsenal look to set the ship aright when Stoke City roll into the Emirates.
As you all know normally I would give a little background on Stoke. Given everything that’s going on, I am going to focus on our squad. We know what Stoke is about. They will try and play physical ball and try and knock the Gunners off their game plan. You know just like Blackburn did and Fulham did. Anyway, let’s take a look at our boys shall we?
It has not been a pleasant two weeks at Ashbourton Grove. Coming off the international break Arsenal saw their 13 game unbeaten streak halted by an opportunistic Sunderland side. In retrospect it was game we should’ve won but didn’t. Ah well.
Last Sunday in a London Derby with lots of meaning Cesc Fabregas and company hung around just long enough to make us think they were going to make a game of it. However, in the glint of 4 minutes and off the toe of Didier Drogba and leg of Thomas Vermaelen we were down 2-nil and down for the count. True, the disallowed Arshavin goal was an absolute blown call and could’ve changed the complexion of the game and true the game was horrendously officiated.
Finally if you follow the Carling Cup and thought it was the only chance for Arsenal to win silverware you came away bitterly disappointed as the reserve squad lost to Manchester City 3-0. To be honest I didn’t expect much if we had won, it would’ve been a bonus but with a squad that was 65% youngsters who have rarely participated in matches with similar opposition , the writing was always on the wall – wasn’t it? The only negative of that match is the Alexander Song picked up his 5th yellow of the season and will be unavailable for this match.
The lead in to this match could start of on a worse foot. We know that we are short not just in height but in terms of strikers we do not seem to have anyone with the ability to step in and fill the gap being left by Robin Van Persie’s injury. And it is still another week or so before Nicky B returns to training. So if Arsenal are going to win this match Captain Fabtastic is going to need to muster the troops and run the game from the midfield as he was able to do prior to the two previous nightmares.
Arsenal will also need to have Andrei Arshavin put his foot where his mouth is and become an effective player for them. Andrei in case you haven’t heard has spent a better part of the week, speaking his mind. While I find it refreshing that an athlete would do so – I think saying your team isn’t strong enough or tall enough or able to compelete in the league does very little to ingratiate yourself to teammates who for what its worth are doing everything they can short of shooting the damn ball. Andrei has been an enigma all season so far. Yes he has scored some corkers but he has been absent in most of the games and when he doesn’t get his way on the pitch tends to give up a little.
And in terms of the Arsenal scoring drought therein lies the main problem. I personally think it has less to do with the striker per se than it has to do with whatever player who has the ball in or around the box shooting the damn ball and pressuring the keeper. In the Chelsea match, Arsenal had a ton of opportunities to test Petr Cech and they didn’t. They were looking for the right time, open pass or I guess a sure thing before they would pull the trigger. If Arsenal are to find the net again, the need to be shooting from the edge of the box to get the keeper moving. They need to forget about always finding the right channel for the pass and shooting the damn ball. The reason Denilson seems to make those wonder shots from 30 yards out is – no one is expecting it. The goalie is dumbfounded. Look at Denilson’s two long shot goals this season and the keeper is frozen because he can’t get an effective read on what Denilson is going to do.
Now I am not advocating not passing in the box ever, I am just advocating taking a little more chances around the box that tests the keeper. Arshavin and Cesc have been deadly from that area. Give it a shot.
Unfortunately there is not alot I can say about our own keeper situation. Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski are at best solid number twos but they are not number ones. There are too many errors in their game – as senior players – for there to be any confidence in their long term viability. Mannone and Cszensy are too unproven to even qualify. I know Arsene is going to be shopping for a striker but if he wants his defence to improve the first start is getting a solid keeper who can be their number one.
Ah well – just a couple notes on all the news this week and then my final overview of the match:
1. I am absolutely sick and tired of the press constantly crucifying Arsene Wenger. Look he has his faults but not shaking mark Hughes’ hand is not the end of the world as the Brit press is making it out to be. Why none of them seem to be questioning Hughes’ on field antics only goes to heighten the feeling that there is a wide spread bias around Arsenal and Arsene Wenger.
2. I love Andreir Arshavin. When he is on he one of the top 15 players in Europe. He is that good. The problem is – he hasn’t been that good all season and frankly I am thinking that since he hasn’t been that good – going around telling anyone who will listen that he thinks the team isn’t good enough to compete or that Liverpool’s KOP is a great place does not make for long term endearment to the Arsenal faithful or his teammates. It is all well and good to criticize, I welcome the frankness – but shouldn’t Andrei take a good hard look at himself first?
3. Finally, I have no problem with the youngsters getting rolled out at the Carling Cup. Some of them are going to be in the first team soon anyway and its better they get competition from other club’s first teams now and get the experience rather than get promoted to the first team and wind up shell shocked because of the transition from reserve team to first team.
So How Will It Play Out:
Okay maybe I am the eternal optimist. Yes it is Stoke and yes they will be physical. But I think this squad is going to come out and try and prove to everyone that they still have it and that with or without Robin Van Persie they are a contender. I don’t even want to discuss what happens if they lose. I just don’t see it happening. And no it won’t be a clean sheet because Manuel Almunia will let one in at the 88th minute.
Probable Starting XI:
Injuries:
Arsenal: Walcott (hamstring, 13 Dec), Bendtner (groin, 19 Dec), Diaby (calf, 19 Dec), Clichy (back, 26 Dec), Gibbs (ankle, Feb), Djourou (knee, Apr), Van Persie (ankle, Apr) Song (1 game suspension)
Stoke: Shawcross (groin), Whitehead (1 game suspension)
Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin. The little russian has been talking alot lately. Its one thing to say those and be a leader for people to follow. Its another to say them and not back it up with your own actions. Here’s to hoping that he intends to show up this week – because he needs to.
Stoke: Beattie. Why? I dunno. I really don’t know anyone else on Stoke – that’s why.
Referee:
Mark Clattenburg
FINAL SCORE:
Arsenal: 3
Stoke: 1

Vela, Walcott, Ramsey, Song and Silvestre included in Cl squad.
Song keeps playing these meaningless games (like the CC tie). Clearly, Arsene feels confident in Denilson if Song gets injured or tired. Sendy is missing again (doesn’t want him cup tied?) so Song has to feature?
Sendy’s market value (for January) will drop if he plays in CL matches.
Vela, Ramsey, and Theo need this experience.
traveling squad:
Carlos Vela
Theo Walcott
Aaron Ramsey
Alex Song
Mikael Silvestre
Jack Wilshere
Lukasz Fabianski (GK)
Vito Mannone (GK)
Fran Merida
Kyle Bartley
Francis Coquelin
Thomas Cruise
Craig Eastmond
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas
Kerrea Gilbert
Luke Ayling
Mark Randall
Gilles Sunu
That’s perfect.
That is the type of squad I wanted to see.
Can’t blame Wilshire, and I can’t blame Cesc either.
I’d imagine the better players have had enough of this fecking about with too many kids and not enough experience… and not replacing sold players with anything but 19 year olds.
Time for Wenger to step up to the plate, or step off.
A cinematic Arsenal squad with Don Vito & Tom Cruise to star :)
A couple of possible talking points bout arsenal in the press today. Cesc wants a physical striker signed.. And Wilshere is considering a loan move away.
With us out of the CC, I would very much like to see Wilshere to to another premier league club and get some experience (preferably a London based club- I’ve read a bit about loan moves and they can be taxing.. close to home would be ideal for a 17 year old). We would also prefer to have the option to recall him. Outside of easy FA cup games, there may not be too many first team starting opportunities for him this season.
As for Cescs comment, we have discussed it a fair bit on this board.Interesting to note that Carlton Cole who we discussed is being mentioned. Also typical that he goes and gets injured till the new year about a week after I commented on his physical robustness.
Cesc says we’re too small…
oh.
is that a revelation?
why do the players spout what the supporters know and say previously, like we need size, depth, experience… but the manager refuses to see
it until we have a massive injury crisis every year?
Arsene knows. What he knows, I’m not sure!
But I know that January is huge, and that we have a number of matches
in a short space in late December.
I don’t want to even recognize a player in the squad for the CL match
on Wednesday. Maybe see if some of the stewards want their chance to play for the club.
“Cesc says we’re too small…”
His words were, we need a different option up front.
and along that thought he commented:
Even a normal team like Chelsea, can have a Drogba who can make the difference.
The traveling squad has been identified, and most of the 1st team players are staying home.
Except Song. :(
Song only played 1/2 the match v. City and missed Stoke,
even listed, doesn’t mean he will play.
He will play as CB since the only other option is Bartley. Same thing happened in the City game (which he played fully, maybe you are confused with the Chelsea game where he was substituted at half time).
Injured – Gallas, Djourou, Clichy, Gibbs, Traore, Eboue, Diaby, Rosicky, Walcott, Bendtner, van Persie.
Folks who will start against Liverpool should ideally be rested for mid week game – Almunia, Vermaelen, Silvestre, Sagna, Song, Denilson, Ramsey, Cesc, Nasri, Arshavin, Vela
Who will play in Greece? Fabianski, Gilbert, Bartley, Sendy, Coquelin, Eastmond, Randall, Merida, Wilshere, Watt, Sunu.
That link to physioroom.com above mirrors your list except Eboue isn’t on it and Eduardo is. However, it lists Gallas and Traore available in midweek and Dudu and Walcott by Sunday. I think we’ll see a line-up in Greece very similar to what we had at ManCity (no Senderos so he won’t be cup tied?). Silvestre will definitely play to build upon the respect he has in the dressing room? http://www.sport.co.uk/news/Football/31092/Wenger_lauds_quiet_leader_Silvestre_.aspx
Respect in the dressing room? I guess it’s not just his head that’s so big….
Well….what can we talk about? (Edit to say: Sorry Josh, I posted this without having seen yours….)
Injuries, nah, we already know too much about them and Nip sums it up nicely above. http://www.physioroom.com/news/english_premier_league/epl_injury_table.php puts the list at 10(!) with Gallas, Traore and Walcott to return soonest, with Dudu and Diaby not far behind and then Clichy and Bendtner. “The long terms I don’t even think about” says AW….
January transfers…sorry, too early, and we’ve got December to get through first.
Whether or not Arshavin is the future at center forward and for taking spot kicks? He says no…. http://redlondon.wordpress.com/2009/12/06/arshavin-on-why-he-didnt-take-spot-kick-himself-and-new-striker-role/
Spurs blowing a two goal lead AND a late penalty? Makes Cesc’s blocked one easier to take, doesn’t it….
No, what I want to discuss is who among our young players (Carling Cuppers?) is going to step up and get us through to the New Year. Aaron Ramsey, Armand Traore and Carlos Vela are getting the most opportunities currently but all looked pretty poor at Man City. Timmy the tooth http://www.7amkickoff.com/ called out Vela for his badly choreographed “fake” injury and his propensity to go to ground in that match. Watching him in the second half vs Stoke he kept to the touchline and was mostly anonymous and he does have a distressing tendency to give up on plays a hair early and look to the referee. We all remember the lovely chipped goals and he seems a remarkably talented player, but he needs to take his 1st team chance RIGHT NOW and score or create some league goals, By contrast Ramsey seems to fight on and was able to recover his own misplayed pass and turn it into a key goal on Saturday, and though he was subbed in for wide-man Eboue, young Aaron didn’t seem even remotely compelled to stay out there. Both of these guys have excelled for their national teams but only Ramsey seems to be taking his chances with Arsenal. Finally, Traore, IMO, looks pacy and dangerous going forward and his cross should have netted a goal (the Stoke OG was only prevented by the post, and Cesc’s easy put-back by Eboue) but he’s a fright defensively. Sean Wright Phillips had his way with him in the CC game and who can forget him absolutely bouncing off Drogba in the Chelsea match. He tends to follow players all over the pitch, vacating his assigned area and assuming Vermaelan (Silvestre in the CC) will be there to cover. It scares me quite a bit. Assuming he recovers from his hamstring knock, Traore and Glen Johnson (another offsively minded wingback) should have an interesting match-up next weekend. But maybe there are some other young guns who should get their chance.
Anyways, just hoping for a little Arsenal discussion and thinking that DAG has gotten a job or something and doesn’t quite have the time he used to….
Agree with you on Vela. He does have a tendency to go to ground way too easily for the “English” game. In the CC game at City, he worked very hard and got into good positions, only to be “eased” out of the ball far too easily. He needs to “build” up or else his talent will go a waste in this league.
Ramsey, on the other hand, looks promising. His main problem is his age. He is fully prone to the inconsistencies that come with being so young. But he seems to work hard and I think he will do well in the long run (especially if or when Cesc leaves).
There was a play in the Stoke game where Arshavin (I think) chipped a pass to Vela but the keeper intercepted and Vela kept running but had given up on the play and was smiling (which I like) and trying to communicate with the passer, as if to say, “good pass.” The thing was the keeper spilled the ball a bit and if he had been more (selfishly?) focused on the ball rather than the communication with his teammate, he might have stopped his run and been there to pounce on the loose ball. It was just a tiny moment in the game, but combined with his staying glued to the touchline it made me think that he’s overly focused on fitting in with his teammates and that he could be a bit more selfish or hard-nosed and do whatever is necessary to make his chances count. (Or maybe try a long shot or two, rather than make the perfect pass). Both he and Ramsey will probably start on Wednesday, so it’s something to watch for.
Also, what are the big CL matches this week? Juventus v Bayern, I know, and Inter needs a result hosting Rubin Kazan (I think), but what are the others?
Our injury list is ridiculous. I was shocked to see Rosicky start on Saturday. That was a foolish choice by Arsene. He should have started with Ramsey then maybe bring on Tomas for the last twenty minutes. Ramsey appears more durable than Mr. Glass. As long as he’s on our books, we’ve got to respect his “fragile nature”.
We go into the CL match with no fit LB. Deja vu, anyone? Maybe we’ll get to the CL Final during a World Cup year again. Nah, not with Almunia. I miss mad Jens. He gave our team a personality.
Question, how is it that in the big and burly BPL, the smallest guy on our team seems one of the most resilient?
I knew as soon as Fab stepped up to take that PK, that he would miss. I would have let Eboue take it. No, really, it would have been Arshavin, Samir, or Vermaelen. It’s bad when your captain takes a penalty when he’s not your normal PK guy. If he misses, it could rock his confidence. Put that burden on your strikers. They lives for that shit.
The Man City win over Chelsea didn’t surprise me at all. I wasn’t impressed with Chelsea when we played them and, contrary to popular belief, I think we outplayed them. Our lack of a cutting edge in attack was the difference. Adebayor’s presence would have been a nice option for us. Well, atleast the board got 24 million GBP.
Speaking of Adebayor, the AFCON is coming up next month. I know you guys hate it but I absolutely love that tournament. There is so much raw talent and athleticism on display. Anyone can win it. It’s about who can keep their nerve and cope with the pressure. I’m sure it will have more meaning this year with South Africa 2010.
we did not outplay Chelsea… sorry.
Not even close.
They did exactly what they wanted to do against us. They do it just about every time, because we never adapt.
How do you outplay a team, when you never create a real scoring chance?
I agree on AFCON!
It should be good football to watch.
Did Man City outplay Chelsea? I don’t think so. To me it seemed like Shay Given outplayed Petr Cech (on the day).
Does any team ‘outplay’ their opponents more than Arsenal (according to the Manager and some supporters), and have less to show for it?
The league table doesn’t spin. Nor does the trophy cabinet.
Just busy this weekend Andez, that’s the only reason I
didn’t comment. Had to tape the match and watch it later!
But it was a good win, especially with the line-up we trotted out there.
Arshavin was the key, and he is going to have to be the main
man for the forseeable future.
Cesc taking penalties, says it all… he is not a good shot!
City beating Chelsea, is great news… but it just means to me, that they are far more equipped to BEAT CHELSEA, than we are. They have a few game changer type players in their line-up and EXPERIENCE. They are not easy to beat at ManCity, as we know.
It will always be about WHAT WE DO anyway. We have been taken by the better teams so far, until that stops, we aren’t winning shit… AGAIN.
The injuries just continue to pile up… and that crazy Christmas period is coming with multiple matches in a short period of time. Going to be VERY DIFFICULT for us, especially.
We should trot out or Carling Cup squad for the last match in the CL.
January striker… I just dreamt it… its Thierry Henry!
;)
Kiwi will like this.

Arsenal’s Injury-Proners
“It’s the worst season for injuries for us. We pick up more injuries than the other big teams, that is true. You cannot say there is not a reason for it but we have not found it yet” – Arsene Wenger.
Here’s a few possible answers, Arsene:
* Your squad is full of injury-prone players and, as the description implies, these players tend to be frequently injured. Tomas Rosicky was a regular absentee even before his 18-month lay-off, while Eduardo is now in double figures for minor injuries suffered in the eleven months since his comeback. It was reckless and naïve of Arsenal to begin the season with him as Van Persie’s back-up, just as this column said at the end of last season that Arsenal should not include Abou Diaby, Mikael Silvestre and Theo Walcott in any plans for this campaign because of their dismal injury records.
* Too many players are rushed back too quickly too often. You yourself described Eduardo’s latest thigh injury as a “recurrence”.
* The short, small players you have tended to favour in recent year are precisely the sort that tend to be kicked the most and thus suffer injury.
* Because you are reluctant to spend big, you frequently buy injured players as they are cheap. See two of the three recruits from last summer, Amaury Bischoff and Silvestre, for cases in point. On the other hand, big-money signings cost more because they tend to offer a reliable level of fitness. See the excellent injury record of Andrei Arshavin, your only big-money signing in the past two years, since his arrival in January for proof.
* Bad luck. There’s no other factor involved when a player, such as Robin van Persie, suffers a kick that damages ligaments. However, try taking a leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s guidebook for How To Deal With International Football. Do you really think he would have released Andrei Arshavin after he was injured in September’s game at Old Trafford? He wouldn’t, which is why Arshavin wouldn’t have missed the next club game after predictably aggravating the injury on international duty.
I ahve only watche the first half of the Stoke game so far, but on another day we could have gone into the break three of four up. Yes we looked a little tentative but we were far better than them.
Looks like Arsession called it right in relation to Arshavin and the CF role. Although he isn’t on his best form his movement guile and generally clinical finishing will indeed make him the best fit for the RvP role. He can do anything RvP can, just differently.
Our kids and reserves against Citeh’s millions was always likely to be a mismatch although we stood toe to toe with them all the way and were only beaten by two wonder goals.I have only seen the first 70 mins of that match though.
The Chelsea defeat however was really discouraging, they looked far superior to us really. Cashley had a field day he must have felt great after having received so much abuse from his “ex-fans” over the years, particularly the long and quite elaborate song that suggests he is a promiscuous homosexual ;-)
Anyway i think we can beat Liverpool at Anfield this time around especially if we can keep Benayoun and Gerrard quiet. We will need to win that one if we are going to be title contenders, it will really raise our confidence and we need that after the Chelsea performance, a win against Stoke will not be enough to raise our self belief.
Really happy about he Spurs result as well. They will be the most likely to get in the top four above Liverpool this season. Lennon looks scary, looks a league above Theo at he moment.
Crazy finish at Goodison as Everton pull back two goals late AND save an injury-time penalty to split points with Spurs….very nice….
Took care of business yesterday despite wasting a large number of chances and leaving the final result until quite late. A few of us had fun on the game day chat (including the follow-up, “Battle of the Billionaires” match). After bantering all morning (for me) in the “virtual pub,” I guess I didn’t feel the need to say much here on the main page.
And today, it feels mostly like a “wait and see” situation. Yesterday’s match felt like one that would reinforce one’s view of the team: a critic would say we’re an injury riddled squad that can’t put away a dire opponent, while the optimist might point to Arshavin’s obvious re-motivation and the relentlessness of the chances we created, and how we really allowed Stoke very little. Overall then, perhaps not a lot was actually “proven”.
So where do we stand? The points situation is improved, but the injuries continue to pile up and it’s getting to a critical level. Hopefully a little R & R in Greece allows the niggles to clear up and we can field a solid squad for the match at Anfield. Arshavin up front, pointing where he wants the ball should put the fear of God into the Scousers. And it should be noted that we managed well without Alex Song yesterday with the back four playing a well coordinated high line putting Tuncay offsides like he was Adebayor. And the decisiveness of Vermaelen and Gallas offset the opposite tendency in Almunia. After the first few Delap throw-ins they no longer posed a threat. In the end a clean sheet and no saves to make was the happiest part of the match for me. Despite the missed chances, the were spells of gorgeous football up front and we always looked threatening. Ramsey’s opportunistic 2nd goal, however, did spell R-E-L-I-E-F.
So let’s see how the injuries play out (AW isn’t using them in some sort of spurious “rotation” plan, is he?) and what sort of squad we can field next Sunday, in another match Benitez needs to keep his job. Certainly Rosicky is out until the new year when he will be “like a new….,” (I can’t even bring myself to say it). The others, hopefully, come back sooner, with maybe the ones who need some match time getting a bit in Greece. United are similarly struggling (Evra finished their match at Center Half) and Chelsea showed some chinks in their armour after City (mostly Shay Given, plus the referee) finally found sufficient motivation (and luck) in a “big” game. Both of those teams had players hobbling off as well, and things at the top of the table seem a bit murkier as we move into the darkest part of the year.
Injuries effecting most clubs!
Carrick partnered with Evra at CB while Fletcher and Giggs were the outside backs!
Lots of football remaining and anything can happen.
If you get a chance, catch the replay of the Everton v. Spurs match (this morning) GREAT
ENTERTAINMENT. Last 20 minutes were simply what football is all about.
Digressing to the City v. Chelsea match
thought City controlled midfield and the match – kept the pressure on Chelsea all day! Chelsea RARELY threatened City.
Our destiny is in our hands as there is much left to the season!
I don’t mind changing topics and rehash our performance yesterday.
The most obvious;
Great play from Arshavin
Tremendous effort from our back 4: ALL
Vs the past 2 seasons, our defense cleared everything, COMFORTABLY. (not including Almunia in this observation)
As our offensive effort seemed ‘unlucky’ in both halves, our small line up was AGAIN showing fluid movement and understanding. We continued to create chances for 90 minutes.
Our captain had one of those bad hair days: the missed PK, Eboue’s block, far too many poor passes, and too many times seeing the other team push him off possession of the ball. Maybe that contributed to the closer score line.
I thought Nasri in mid-field was critical for our effectiveness all day. Denilson was okay, but not the strength we need at DM.
This run for Traore has given me more awareness for his talent. Traore looks more comfortable in the position than Gibbs. (not taking away from Gibbs ability – just comparing outward mannerisms).
Possible, but has Arsene ever signed a player he has publicly refuted? I don’t think so.
————————————
Yes Nipuna. In fact, very recent. Arshavin. Remember that Zenit manager called Wenger a “fox” when comes to transfer dealing? When AW suggested he had doubt on Arshavin despite at the same time trying to buy him.
Also, the table gives an indication to how one game can influence the standings in such a big way. If we win our game in hand we’re 5 points of the top, had we avoided defeat last week that 5 points turns into a 2 point deficit or a 1 point lead.
Similar concept to the united result when you compare our position in the table to theirs.
But obviously things went the way they did and things are the way they are. Still not out of it completely.. slim outside chance. A lot of things and ‘if’s’ have to go our way for us to win the title. Still a chance though I’m not giving up any hope anytime soon…
I think we have as good a chance as manure. A few years ago what we lacked was the ability to put away some of the supposed weaker teams in the PL. I don’t know about you guys but this year I go into any game against weaker opposition knowing even if they park the bus we will score. Excluding the Sunderland game which had a lot of unique circumstances (Eduardo first start in the middle, Nasri just back, international break etc)we have been scoring and creating.
I think that if we can continue to smash weaker opposition we will be in the hunt for the title because we will always pick up points against top teams (maybe with the exception of Chelsea with Drogba)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/8397624.stm
Is it time to write off this asset?
Its going to be a very very important couple of months for the league. Looking at manure and chel$ki schedule they both could go on a long sustained run. I could see them both breaking out into 8-10 game unbeaten streaks without breaking a sweat. If we are to sustain a challenge we will need to keep in touch. Points we should have had in manchester and at west ham seem crucial now as a couple of losses (liverpool or either villa game) could put an end to our challenge (in terms of belief of the team).
Personally I still do not feel manure has a better team then us. If we are within touching distance by the time we go into the big three games at the end of Jan then we really have an opportunity.
Other than the Liverpool game, we can go on a nice little run ourselves. I think we should be gunning for wins all the way through till the rough looking patch starts at Villa Park. The momentum would be good for us going into that patch.
There are some tricky fixtures of course. Anfield is as weak as its ever going to be and there is no better time to get a result there. I expect at least a draw next week and if we come out and play then all 3 points.
Villa at home may be tricky, their game plan will be to press and harry us all the way and it is a good one against us. They are well suited to implement it as well with the personnel they have but if we are to mount a serious title challenge in the position we are in, we really should be taking care of Villa at home.
Obviously we have to take into account off-days, but till the away Villa game, I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect us to get 20 out of the next 24 points.
Or am i just seeing things in a far too biased, red-and-white tinted manner?
i think we will need those 20 out of 24 points if we want to stay in the race
its a week later and reality strikes again…
chelsea arent unstoppable, liverpool are still crap and we can actually beat stoke…
oooh to be a goooner
whats with arsenal players stopping fabregas shots off the line? especially when hes my fantasy captain!!! Oh Eboue what would we ever do without you lol
On the positive side i guess if thats the only thing bothering me after the game i should and am very happy =D
Surprisingly few post-match comments..
Happy with the win. Seems straightforward in hindsight but with the prematch form, our injuries and the matchup of our playing style with that of Stoke everyone should be extremely delighted with the win.
Was anyone else reminded by Arshavin of the way VP was playing prior to his injury? I’m happy to hear Wenger is willing to continue with the system.
Rosicky injured… Again.. I’m not even overly disappointed as I think every time he plays, I subconsciously prepare myself for a month or 2 lay off before the game’s end.
Surprisingly few post-match comments..
————-
That’s because we have WON. :)
I am used to it – a defeat would tend to get fans more excited these days (in terms of posting comments) than a win.
when we win what can you say?
Great job? thats no fun people just like to b*tch and complain lol
if w ewon the league i’m sure we’d be the only ones celebrating hahahaha!
We’ll just give everyone the benefit of the doubt and assume they’re off celebrating
Actually that’s complete nonsense. No one said anything the day we lost to Chelsea or that much after Sunderland. I think HighburyTerracesteve even commented on the lack of vitriol. In the previous seasons though it’s true the defeats got more comments, but it’s like that on every other football board.
What do want people to say anyway? There’s nothing to be gleaned from these games, not least when we’ve been put in our place just the week before.
Beat Liverpool at Anfield then we can start re-assessing. Until then there isn’t much to say that we don’t already know, for me at least.
Although Arshavin looked quite good as a central forward ;)
when your beloved side suffered a defeat against one of your rivals, who would have the mood to sit there carefully analysis what’s wrong right after the match?
I didn’t watch the game, and rarely can anymore unless they’re on Sky. Internet streams seem to have gone downhill.
So the combination of not watching the game, and it being Stoke, meant I had nothing much to say.
Liverpool next week? It’s on Sky. The tough games, games we rarely win, are always on Sky!
@I am used to it – a defeat would tend to get fans more excited these days (in terms of posting comments) than a win.

Or maybe most of us feel like beating Stoke isn’t all that exciting a week after getting crushed by Chelski.
Didn’t most everyone feel like this was a game we SHOULD win? We took care of business against a middle of the table team. It’s nice, but hardly something worth trumpeting, particularly when we’ve so recently and miserably failed a test against the team at the top.
honestly, if you look at the calender of a football season, i think over 90% of fixtures are the game we are “supposed” to win.
All the discusson forums would have gone dead if the attitude is – because we won a game we are supposed to win, so nothing worht trumpeting. Let’s go eat phawn sandwich.
Frankly, when nipuna first suggested Arshavin should play up front, I didn’t believe it will work. As it turned out, he looks very impressive playing that role against Stoke.
Main difference – his “off the ball” movement. Far better than Eduardo has shown so far. He worked the channel surprisingly well.
I thought we were “lucky” in the Stoke City win. I said “lucky” is because we were extremely “unlucky” attacking wise, hit the bar twice, a penalty saved, and Eboue made a goalline clearance for Stoke (though it’s not really his false)…… At times like this, you fear for the worst. Worrying it may end up as “one of those days”, that can’t score no matter how many chances we created, and ended up being drawn level or even lost the match.
At least that’s what always happened to us at the past. So the fact that we won the match it was quite lucky a feeling to me.
Phew.
When we missed the penalty, I thought, Here we go again.
But we kept at it. A strong, driving performance from a team of midgets. Not one player over 6ft.
We got a little fussy, and a little frantic. But Ramsay impresses me more and more – a very cool finish.
That said, we were only playing Stoke. We still couldn’t beat Chelsea or ManUre with our current line-up.
Liverpool is going to be very interesting to say the least.
City beat Chelsea. Title race is back on. So is the race for CL spots.
Shay Given saving a late penalty no less.
But does this make us feel like we’re back in the race?
Or that we still need to worry about City’s challenge for 4th?
It is really up to us, isn’t it?
Beat Liverpool at Anfield, put together a good run and we could be in the title mix.
Lose and contine to struggle and we could be scraping for the 4th spot.
For me yesterday results are less of a barometer of our future than last weekends. I hope I’m wrong.
We’ll worry when the time comes. Right now it would be a very loserish mentality for the team to think.. 4th place safer.. we can play a bit sub-par. They should be thinking that a window of opportunity has opened and play out of their socks to make sure any lapse by Chelsea is punished.
Without a single fucking striker am I free to say – we are royally fucked?
We’ll be fine….I hope….Eboue’s been consistently within several yards of goal when he takes a shot, and Nasri can do some nice stuff. Personally I’m hoping that Rosicky can change your mind about him. Gameday chat’s on I presume….
I’m pumped up for our match today!
There’s no substitute for watching Arsenal and our talented lads.
Tony Pullis has been added to my list of evil managers with Hughes; so go Gunners, lets crush Stoke by
some outrageous score.
STARTING XI:
Almunia – Sagna, Vermaelen, Gallas, Traore – Fabregas, Denilson, Nasri – Rosicky,Eboue,Arshavin
Arshavin is in the middle with Eboue on the right.
Eduardo picked up a knock in training yesterday.
FFS
Subs: Senderos, Vela, Ramsey, Silvestre, Wilshere, Fabianski, Merida
Big game today because of our recent form. It would be very nice to dispense with some disturbing statistics that I keep reading over and over:
–that we have yet to score in the first 15 minutes of any match.
–that we’ve only taken 3 points from our matches against teams in the top half of the league (Stoke currently sit ninth)
It would be extremely nice if we could score early as Stoke will be parking the bus, playing long balls and working for set pieces. They’ve got a good keeper in Sorensen (big reason Denmark won their WC qualifying group). Even if we do score, Stoke seems like one of those teams that won’t open up the game even if they go a goal or two down.
Obviously we need goals. Arshavin needs to show that he’s focused on his own game, Eduardo needs to show his finishing verve and at least put some balls on target, and Denilson needs to do enough defensively and in possession so Cesc can pull the strings. And defensively we need to, somehow, seem calm and confident on long balls and set pieces. Almunia’s attachment to staying on his line might actually help on Delap’s flat throws, which still must be a talking point when he and Kolo Toure get together for a drink….I found this interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rory_Delap#Throw-ins
And finally, It would be really nice if Mark Clattenburg gives us a bit of protection early and maybe shows a card or two if they try to play the ‘ard stuff. Ade and Bentley should have been sent off for their early antics in the other matches “Plugs” has reffed for us. Luckily Stoke don’t have any of our former players with axes to grind…..And speaking of bad referees….Did anybody else see Phil Dowd give a penalty to Hreiderson’s outrageous dive in the early match? Makes the Rooney dive against us (which Almunia bungled and Dowd gave) seem like real “artistry….”
All this World Cup talk has got me thinking: How does everyone here think Wenger would do as a national team (NT) coach?
I think it is a virtually unanimous view that he does not focus on defense as much as attack, but would this matter as much in the international game? Right now he focuses much more on developing and buying attackers than defenders/holders, but in an NT, players don’t “cost” anything, so even if he were to continue focusing mostly on attack, he’d still be able to chose better defenders for an NT than a club. That would work in his advantage, as would his keen eye for spotting talent. Nor do I believe he would have such a heavy emphasis on youth, b/c I think this derives mainly from economic constraints (whether perceived or real), which don’t factor into the NT equation.
But on the other hand, you may still have a team with too many luxury finesse players, no direct strikers, not enough depth at the back, a lack of size/physicality, and difficulty with defensive tactics, particularly set pieces/headers.
Another big difference b/w club and NT is the number and type of matches. No marathon, slug-fest season- it’s a sprint, you do or die, so there’s little room for experimentation. You also don’t get to know your players as well, and getting chemistry is harder though still possible. Not sure how these last few things would affect/change Wenger’s style or effectiveness. It’s interesting to think about though.
I think Arsene will struggle as a national coach. For many reasons.
Arsene loves to develop players and you hardly get enough time with national teams.
Arsene loves to pick and choose players. You can’t do that with NTs. Also, you have to deal with massive egos (assuming he is coaching a good team), something he prefers to avoid.
His attacking teams have always needed a few games to gel and get into rhythm. No such luxuries with the NT.
One thing that will work to his advantage is that he won’t have to complain about his players getting injured in “meaningless” games. :)
Can’t see AW ever being a national coach. He’s pretty philosophically committed to the club game, and, to me, he seems to be equally committed to living and dying by his philosophies, much as he was committed to not shaking Mark Hughes hand the other night.
A final thought about the int’l game….South Africa hosting the WC seems like the perfect opportunity to move the ACN to a regular summer schedule. They could’ve skipped this next one and held it in the summer of 2011 (in the South African Stadiums, perhaps?) and then every other summer. It might be a bit sticky in some of those countries in June, but the current schedule hurts the nat’l teams (not too mention the best African players and their European clubs).
Wenger has ruled out Dzeko and Balotelli as January options.
Probably just a simple message to their clubs that – don’t try to hold us ransom.
Possible, but has Arsene ever signed a player he has publicly refuted? I don’t think so.
Actually the last player he talked down was Arshavin. Talked him down last summer and last January before eventually clamming up.
I don’t think Chamakh is viable for just the reasons AW states – plus he will be FREE in the summer. Why pay now for something you ocan get without any money.
Dzeko I think then is his likely target. Its running almost parallel to what he was doing with AA23 last season.
So those two are as good as signed.
WC draw – No “group of death” this time around, at least on paper. The closest being the Brazil group.
I can’t exactly recall whether US had played against England before in World Cup Finals, except for that 1-0 to US win long long time ago.
Gotta say I would much perfer US to beat England. England is the only team which turned me from a diehard supporter to an anti fan. I used to hate Maradona for years after his “Hand of God”. But all those stupid media hype, and ugly players ego, I will support any side who play against them in the World Cup. The only 2 players I like in the England side are David Beckham and Theo Walcott, but both may miss out anyway.
Whenever it is World Cup time, it is ABE – anybody but England. :)
With Russia, Croatia, Czech Republic (usual ranked teams) staying home, all the groups seem to have 2 strong teams & two lesser known countries.
Agree about England and Beckham and Theo. However, I like the play of James Milner. (for some stange reason)
James Milner is an interesting player. He reminds me a bit of Paul Merson.
A relatively underrated player, with a physical presence and quite skillful as well.
But whenever I read the name of James Milner, my first thought is his Under 21 England days…. he seemingly had played for England Under 21 forever!
I think if he were playing for another big club, we’d see more attention on him. After their fast start last fall, Villa is struggling to find form.
Milner: technique under pressure, and making clutch plays.
Anyway, I still follow Friedal, wish he had moved to Arsenal – but watching their matches, Milner’s play caught my attention.
Tim Cahill @ everton: another quiet, goes about his business & gets the job done player; everton is also struggling to regain form.
Arsession, I wouldn’t say that.
I think all of the groups have a clear favorite, but certainly more than half will have a great fight for 2nd place:
Group B
1st: Argentinea
2nd: Nigeria, Greece, or S. Korea
Group C
1st: England
2nd: USA, Algeria, or Mexico
Group D (most interesting IMO)
1st: Germany
2nd: Australia, Ghana, or Serbia
Group E
1st: Netherlands
2nd: Denmark, Japan, or Cameroon
Group G
1st: Brazil
2nd: Ivory Coast or Portugal
Group H
1st: Spain
2nd: Switzerland or Chile
The only straightforward groups the way I see it are: A (FRA, MEX) and F (ITA, PAR).
CG –
I see where you’re coming from and realize there is for most of the groups, as you point out ONE traditionally strong country.
First, I admit to not following South American, Asianic, and African football.
Since the 90 WC (maybe b4); the host nation has survived the group stages. What that translates to for Group A – not sure.
CG –
Host country has advanced out of 1st group stage in every world cup !
If we play like we did at the confed cup, we might shock England.
I figure we definitely make it out of our group easy. After that its a dice roll.
We definitely have a chance. Algeria and Slovenia aren’t walk overs but they aren’t out of our league either. Wouldn’t be too surprised to see us nab 2nd.
I can’t believe how much coverage ESPN is giving the draw: 3 full hours!
Dylan was right, “the times they are a-changin.”
Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast in the same group at WC2010.
England have an easy ride.
an easy ride?
It’s going to PANIC TIME for England after they open up with a LOSS to the UNITED STATES!!!
DAG – well thought out & constructed post.
As for your line up. The last two starts for Ramsey have significantly contributed to Arsenal losses. I’d like to see more experience in the midfield by starting Rosicky with Cesc and Denilson. I realize he played on Wednesday night, but he needs more than 10-15 minute cameos to regain his form.
Agree on your remarks about our keepers. Yet for this match, I’d prefer Fabianski or Mannone (won’t happen) but my preference. Almunia is just lost when he has to come off his line!
I like our chances despite no RvP, Bendtner, or Song.
No prediction for the score.
Yeah well Rosicky did nothing to endear me this past week allowing Tevez to stroll by and score.
Pretty harsh assessment of the play. Yes, he was mugged by 2 City players and lost possession.
However, it was not Rosicky that allowed Tevez to stroll by and score!
Maybe you missed the actual play, but it was ‘first’ Eboue and then Song who qualify for your assessment.
Secondly, City would not even have been a threat at our end of the pitch (at that moment) if Eastmond and Ramsey had shown up for the game.
DAG – I am an admirer of Ramsey. But his most recent outings for the club have been awful.
Cesc needs a partner in midfield (Rosicky or Nasri) to contribute.
Stoke are good in the air and without Song, we are even more vulnerable at high balls. This will be a tight game. If we don’t score in the first half, this will become a very tense affair.
I agree I think we have to score inside the first 15 minutes.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-gallas-and-rosicky-deals-in-pipeline
Gallas and Rosicky deals in the pipeline.
Sorry Fred, no chance Arsene is overhauling the squad.
Too bad …. Wenger is most likely never gonna win silverware for us ever again.
9 strikers, cant buy a goal in a tough game.
4 keepers, none of them competent.
We are like an obese man trying to run the 100m. Too much fat not enough lean solid muscle.
