Next up for Arsenal is an away match to Tottenham which will have a big impact on the chase for the Champion’s League qualification.

Here’s the problem. A large part of my love of Arsenal was a love of players in the team… not just the laundry.
    From the first day I watched a match … with Ian Wright, David Seaman, and Tony Adams… to Dennis Bergkamp… Patrick Vieira… Pires… Freddie… Petit…. Lauren… a young Ashley Cole…. Sol… to Thierry Henry… to Fabregas…. to RVP…
I don’t really like many players in the team… I don’t relate to them, or feel their enthusiasm… its GONE.
The realization is, that anyone that’s really good, is going to be either ask to leave or be cashed in… now, we sell in the EPL, making it 10 times worse.

    I like Theo… I like Wilshire… I like Sagna… don’t really feel to great about anyone else… maybe Cazorla…
where’s Arshavin? what’s he up to? hanging with Squillaci?

    fun times at Arsenal.
used to be parades… now we have charades.

I understand what you’re saying here. I would say that I do root for the laundry, first. Players turn over pretty frequently, obviously. And professional athletes often, for one reason or another, don’t usually reward getting too invested in.

Having said that, I understand the sentiment that this bunch feels harder to root for. But I’m not sure it’s not a chicken/egg scenario. If, somehow, they were consistent performers. Or even (getting silly here) real winners, we’d likely be more inclined to feel good about them. I don’t like their *game*, so it’s harder to like them. (Whatever that really means.)

    HTS. just don’t really care…
My passion for the club, has been battered for years, like the current Arsenal squad against Bayern Munich.
Not interested in a match against average teams in which we usually struggle… and when we play the better teams, they embarrass us, more often that not.

We made many more millions… as noted by Vibe.
    Hurray.
It’s about as wonderful as a nail-biting win at home, over a Villa team thats in a relegation battle. Who cares? not me…
and I didn’t see it, but I read there were a good amount of empty seats at the Emirates.

    That’s good news.

you can take it from here…
I’ll watch hockey, March Madness coming up… and there are plenty of other teams on that are trying to win trophies in the soccer world… the FA Cup still has some minnows to root for too…

    Arsenal, who cares?
The club have got their wish… they have bludgeoned their faithful into oblivion with the lowering of expectations… 4th place is a trophy.

Arsenal announce profits of 17.8 million GBP. So all is well.

Yes, good to know you’re focused on the big picture….

Money in the bank isn’t a bad thing per se, or is it? My guess is that the link is another whack with that same (ol’) stick we use to we beat ourselves as we go on through another season of (self-imposed) austerity. Sort of a why are we slumming it when we should be spumming it?, or something…. Stag’s gone missing so I guess somebody’s got to pick up the slack….(And, in truth, I understand the frustration your ilk has got going….)

Still, I’m gonna call you on it. It’s about using those resources adroitly, of course. Who should we sign and for how much? (Remember to include both salary and transfer fee.) At least when our man Fred was on, (or your coachy-woachy arch-nemesis, josh, for example….) we used to name names….

I’m not saying we cannot complain about the intractable characters on hand. Frozen Stan looking like a cow on his new ranch or our manager who seems unable to adapt to the new players values or pay someone above his own salary. Likewise, don’t get me started on the players in our so called team. Beyond one-footed Jack and Santi (please drive forward and get in the box!) there’s not a ton to get excited about. If you could blend those two and then clone them (and maybe add the BFG’s tallness gene), well then we might have the nucleus of something….

As it is, is there anything I can learn from clicking on the link? Instead, I’ll check out those other London teams….

Steve, sometimes you type a lot to say very little. Mostly, it’s kind of endearing. This time, I’m going to call you on it.

The was a front (sports) page article in the Telegraph about Arsenal’s finances. I linked it here because it’s of relevant interest to (most) Arsenal fans. Read it, don’t read it, fill up some space sort of on topic, sort of off topic, kill some time, feel how you want, do whatever you like. Mostly, rest assured, I’m quite content with my grasp of big picture.

        • highburyterracesteve 25 February, 2013 at 22:26

Touche’ — and ouch….(Pardon my French….and, in truth, nothing but love and hugs for ALL suffering Gooners–and, at least you read about it….)

How ’bout that Gareth Bale? He’s like last year’s RVP. One would think, however, that Spurs won’t sell him to United…..

Anyhow, hopefully you’ll find a way to watch the Derby, painful though it very well might be….

        • vibe4arsenal 26 February, 2013 at 20:03

I’ll definitely watch that. A truly interesting match and the reason I felt like Mike pulled out the ‘Ultimate Gut check’ headline a week too early.

Looking forward to the next podcast which, I’m guessing, will be more focused on the meta-narratives rather than the spin coming out of the last match. To a certain extent I can find enjoyment in both areas, with the latter much easier when it’s been a positive result.

As squeaky as those 3 points were, I’m still not surprised by the way the headlines are trending. Somehow City beats Chelsea (yesterday) but Arsene is talking not about how we’re going to leapfrog the (dark) blues for 3rd but how we’re going to catch City for 2nd! It’s mind boggling, really, but that’s football. If the sky is falling with every bad result why shouldn’t it be reborn in ever more brilliant tones of blue with each good one?….

A corollary to that absurdity is that it’s probably easier and more fun to root against Spurs (tonight at West Ham) than it is to support our team. C’mon Bubble boys! We’ll see if they like a little route 1 up ’em, etc., etc. Is 15 million pound Lloris the answer to 35 million pound Andy Carroll and our own (free bird) Maroune Chamakh? Set pieces and knock down scrambles could be the answer…..

    More afterwards….Watch this space…..
