Match Preview: Arsenal v Fulham; Premier League Match Day 2

It’s hard to classify game 2 of the season as a “must win” but given the current mindset of their supporters, Arsenal’s trip to Craven Cottage has to be seen as that.
A win is necessary because you wouldn’t want to be a team 6 points or 4 adrift off the top coming into the early season North London Derby. You wouldn’t want to be a 6 to 4 points behind this early in any title race. Sure, there are slips and falls all over the place and they’re to be expected but the title was gifted to United last season because all the other “chasers” gifted them points early on.
Before anyone goes all ape thinking I am declaring us title contenders. No, I am not. What I am saying is, let’s not put ourselves out of it this damn early in the season. Therefore nothing short of a win should be the goal.
And it won’t be easy.
Last season in the close out to the season, Arsenal edged out a nervy 1-0 win on the head of Per Mertesacker. It shouldn’t have been nervy, not with Steve Sidewell getting sent off in the 12th minute. However, Fulham were resolute and Arsenal were under tremendoud pressure knowing that one slip up would likely doom them to life outside the Champion’s League this season. It showed. You’d never had thought Fulham were down to 10 men. They were compact defensively and when they had the chance the combination of Ruiz and Berbatov were giving Arsenal fits.
For Arsenal’s part with the pressure of trying to maintain an unbeaten run to close out the season they just never looked in it. Even when they had superior numbers the lack of quality emanating from the side that day was glaring. It got worse when Olivier Giroud also got sent off. While I am sure I saw it through my rose-tainted glasses he did seem to get the ball. But I digress.
This time heading in there is still pressure and Arsenal are going to need to call in on whatever “heart” they can muster. They showed it last season to close out the year and they showed it on Wednesday against a Fenerbahce side that didn’t look up for the challenge. The midfield combination of Wilshere and Ramsey looked more composed and seemed to work better than against Aston Villa.
To me more than anything that combination has to be focused and solid this weekend as well. The key as pointed out last week to Aston Villa’s two PKs was allowing Agbonlahor to go unscathed through the middle of the pitch. This happened because both Ramsey and Wilshere got more forward and there was no one sitting deep as say Arteta has been doing.
Fulham are a vanilla side and Michael Cox rightly points out on the dot com that they have no particular playing style. They are neither a creative juggernaut nor are the big time “bus parkers.” They just always seem resolute. There were times when they had Dempsey and others that they offered more attacking threat but Berbatov is hardly a slouch and should be respected as a legitimate threate. They have injury concerns in goal as Martin Steklenberg went off last week with a shoulder injury and Kieran Richardson who is on the left side defensively is also out.
Arsenal’s own injury worries are nothing to scoff at either as Oxlade-Chamberlain, Vermaelen, and Arteta experience long-term spells on the sideline. Laurent Koscielny will miss this match serving his one match ban for being sent off last week. It’s probably good for him given the eye injury he suffered in the mid-week clash versus Fenerbahce. The problem for Arsenal however, means that the only CB option is Bacary Sagna who has done quite well there but is still not an every day CB. With Sagna pushing to the middle Jenkinson will slot in on the right side of the defense.
The starting XI is still very solid and while we can point to all the aberations that were seen in last week’s match they will need to turn it up this week to get it done. Simply settling for a draw isn’t good enough and well a loss would be disasterous.
How the Match Should Play Out:
Fulham managed a win with only 46% possession and allowed 26 shots against a revamped Italian version of Sunderland. They are going to let Arsenal play their possession game and likely look to press Arsenal off the ball. With a back up keeper who hasn’t really played a lot in this division and a young LB, Arsenal are going to get their chances. However, they need to convert them. If they can do that and limit the chances created through the middle they will walk out of Craven Cottage with all three points.
Players to Watch:
Arsenal. Aaron Ramsey. If one players is really growing in stature it’s Aaron Ramsey. Not everyone’s favorite he is steadly puttting to bed any of the concerns that exist about him. Still able to throw us the occasional errant back heel that causes us to scream but he is definitely showing more positives then negatives.
Fulham. Berbatov. When he’s on he’s on and he could make any back 4 cry. He just has to be interested in the match.

I predict 2013/14 to be yet another fallow year for Arsenal. There will be much huffing and puffing in pursuit of a Champion’s League placing for the next season with no meaningful challenge for trophies for a ninth straight year. Nine years. What is fascinating is to observe the plummeting tenor of the more optimistic blogs. It’s like the hardcore faithful having held on valiantly with whitened knuckles… have slipped agonisingly over the edge and into the abyss of angst. It’s like the game is up, Wenger is naked, his mumbo jumbo has lost its mystical powers and even the blind now see.
Frankly, even if we buy several players at this ridiculously late stage why would we think we are contenders? In one sense Wenger is right, transfers alone aren’t the key. It’s squad depth together with all those other factors less easy to see like; tactics, use of subs, team balance, steel, momentum and the ability to conjure up something in the 93rd minute against the run of play. We’re only obsessed by elite transfers because it’s the window… once the window closes all the other facets critical to a winning game will come in to sharper focus. And many, if not all of them, can only be addressed by changing the 63 year old manager. At 63 Wenger is too old to change, has too much power, which is too bad for us.
The one solace is that the train wreck that will allow the necessary change gets closer by the game. The booing and the intensity of feeling never goes away, it just submerges temporarily and reappears a bit later. Sooner or later the fan discord and media attention will overwhelm the stubborn manager and a change will happen. Gazidis was right when he said that the fans will decide when it is the right time to have a change in manager. Mr G knows the operating context, the manager is the Boss and is backed by the majority owner. Neither the CEO or the other Board members are in a position to alter this course.
PS. Apologies to Stag on Suarez. Looks like you were right, no cigar.
so now Wenger is saying there is no crisis at the club at all… its made up by the media, and the fans are brainwashed by the media!
like I said, no problems here, we just beat Fulham and Fenerbache… so why would we need anyone … we are contenders for the CL and League already…
Meanwhile, United might swap Rooney for Mata?
Hmmm. both teams get players they covet… Chelsea already has a lot of midfield weapons, and United have RVP…
this might help both teams… (unless of course Van Persie goes down injured?!)
If we don’t sign anyone, I might not watch a single Arsenal match…
what would the point be? As someone noted in a previous post… it is supposed to be entertainment, and enjoyable… if I am not entertained or enjoying it, why would I watch it…
Why would people pay the highest prices in Europe to see this team?
I don’t think they will for very long…
stag, if you didn’t watch the fulham game, you missed a good game yesterday. as a football fan, it was entertaining so even the neutral would have enjoyed it.
arsenal were more clinical in attack and more resolute in defense than fulham. fulham have decent quality but their tactics were poor. that’s why arsenal won with relative ease. podolski, giroud, and cazorla have that first bpl season under their belts so i really believe their games will be even better this season than last; if they can stay fit.
wenger has always used these kind of results to big-up himself as if he knew all along what no one else did. smug, indeed. a good test will be on sunday against totts. avb is really making his mark on that team but he’s got a lot of new guys. they’re still adjusting to each other and the league. on the contrary, he hasn’t signed any bad players. it would be disappointing if they prove good enough to pass arsenal.
i watched southampton/sunderland and i’m really expecting good things from southampton, especially since they signed that argentine coach. i’m a fan of jay rodriguez and suggested earlier in the summer that arsenal bid for that kid. he’s a proper number 9 with good size and skill level. i encourage anyone to watch that kid play this season.
lastly, sunderland are trying to bring michael bradley to the bpl. that is the one american player i wouldn’t mind seeing at arsenal; certainly more so than clint dempsey. arsenal need a holding midfielder and bradley is a very intelligent player. wishful, i know.
I wasn’t waking up at 7:30am to watch Arsenal… no chance.
Wenger said 5 days ago, that “the transfer period starts now”… and since then, Chelsea hijacked Willian from Tottenham, and signed him… and Tottenham is going to sign Chiriches.
Arsenal have signed NOBODY.
1 week left in the window.
I watched some of the Sunderland/Soton match too.. I think Altidore will do well… he is just really hard to handle with his power, and the EPL will help his national team play…
I like Bradley, but Wenger would never go for him… frankly, I doubt he’ll go for anyone…
Saldado scores again for the Totts and they win again…
With no significant signings, with or without Bale, Tottenham is better than Arsenal… this will be the season they pass us, if Wenger fucks up what’s left in the window.
Wenger’s really got to be feeling arrogant now…
see, we don’t need anyone in… this team has what it takes to win the league!
Aston Villa loss was a blip … a one-off loss…
very afraid these wins will buoy his belief that we don’t need players in, and we won’t
sign anyone of note…
would be kind of strange to get spanked by Fulham, after that big CL win…
but its definitely not out of the realm of possibility with this team…
not gonna watch… not until the club do something with players coming in…
how many more injuries can we sustain, before we have to play reserve players?
