Well if the mantra heading into Stoke was – just win baby (thank you Al Davis) – it’s not very different this weekend when Norwich come in the Emirates for the final home match of the season.

The impact of a single point gained versus Chelsea and Stoke remain to be seen. Right now it looks like a good point because now that Spurs and Newcastle have their games in hand played – Arsenal still sit one point in front of the other Champion’s League chasers.

It basically means that Arsenal control their destiny. Okay, they’ve controlled their own destiny since as far back as QPR away but now with two matches to play win both – no worries. The opponents this week are Norwich. And like next week’s opponents West Brom, there is nothing left for Paul Lambert’s men to play for. They won’t be relegated and they won’t be in Europe. They are safely ensconced in the middle of the table and safe from all other troubles and set for their next season in the Prem.

But there is vital flaw to that thinking – we’ve shown as a team that when we overlook an opponent (cough, cough, QPR) we come out miserably flat and get outplayed and wind up with a negative result. Arsenal, the players, manager and supporters should not overlook this very capable opponent.

Norwich for much of the season has been an up and down side. They’ve shown moments of absolute brilliance like recently when they went to White Hart Lane and beat Spurs but then they’ve shown themselves to be absolutely poor like their recent 3-0 loss to Liverpool.

Part of it is likely how Lambert approaches each match. He changes his side from game to game and projecting his lineups are usually hard.  They tend to do well with wide play and a flowing attacking style of play, something that should help Arsenal out. The big question mark is in their defense as Lambert’s personnel shuffling has likely led to an inability for any cohesion or consistency in the unit.

In other words, this is not a Stoke or Chelsea who are going to sit back and defend and try to hit on the counter. They will come at Arsenal and try and play with the Gunners. As we’ve said, it is something that should benefit Arsenal – if they come in with the right approach.

This season has shown many things to supporters. One of them is that when Arsenal come into a match with the right mindset and focus, they can play with anybody and likely come out of it with a result. The wins over Spurs, Chelsea, and City and even some of the draws have shown that. However, when as we mentioned earlier they overlook an opponent, they are sorely lacking in any conviction of play.

The key question will be how Wenger will set up and I have to admit it’s been kind of hard to project the lineup with the likes of Walcott and Arteta out and no real like for like replacements for them. Gervinho seems to have fallen out of favor or form and doesn’t seem likely to make the starting lineup which means that Yossi can come in. Rosicky obviously gets the start but whether he takes the Arteta role or his more natural CAM role remains to be seen. If he takes the CAM role then Ramsey will feature in the Arteta role and it’s something he hasn’t done so well.  Putting Rosicky in the Arteta role and Ramsey up front takes one of our most dynamic players out of his best role and replaces him with someone who is struggling with a crisis of confidence.

I am not a big proponent of Oxlade-Chamberlain playing as a starter every week because he is still very raw. His youth and inexperience leads him sometimes to hold the ball too long and lose it when he should’ve passed. It’s all something that will come from time but he doesn’t have that now. Still there may be something in letting him play and offer us speed and strength either on the wing or through the middle.

To me the set-up and mindset are the two biggest issues that will determine the outcome of this match. The talent is there, how it is deployed and utilized is the issue.

How the Match Should Play Out:
Oh who knows. It really depends on how Arsenal approaches this match. We’ve said it all season long, this team is at its best when its committed to pressing as a team, passing the ball quickly and using their speed to effect. Should Arsenal hit Norwich with all that clicking then there is likely not much the visitors will be able to do. With Norwich not likely to sit back it should be a wide open affair with both sides getting some joy. The key for Arsenal – is making the chances count.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Robin Van Persie.  PFA player of the year, FWA player of the year, he simply is the best player in the league by a mile right now. He can single-handedly determine the outcome of any match if he is on target.

Norwich. Grant Holt. 13 premier league goals from a guy who was in the lower tiers of football only 3 seasons ago.

Projected Lineups:

The Final Word:

We didn’t cover the Podolski signing because we had a thorough covering of it when the deal was first ‘leaked’ weeks ago. However, it doesn’t mean we aren’t enthused. We are. It hopefully signals that Arsenal have learnt their lesson from last season and trying to lock in their dealings as early as they can.

There are some additional rumours that deals for Jan Vertonghen and Yann M’Villa (Can we have a Jan and Yann in the team at the same time?) could be done by the time the season ends. Vertonghen is being courted by Spurs as well, but reports in Holland and elsewhere are that Arsenal are his first choice.

As for M’Villa there is talk that Wenger is keen to get an out and out holding midfielder in the Veiria mold. M’Villa is that one. What this means for Alex Song is nothing in my opinion. Alex has been good as a DM but he is also offering us something different in terms of creativity and it is likely that should Arsenal get M’Villa,  Song’s role would change completely. I don’t buy into speculation he would be sold. Anyway, who cares if we get M’Villa and have Song in a DM role – if anything has been learned this season – you cannot have enough proven players in your squad.

A lot of people are concerned that the signing is a nod to the fact that Arsenal believe Van Persie will leave – I am not getting into that now – however, I do not think Poldi was signed for that reason. Wenger went out of his way to highlight how he sees Robin and Lukas working together. He pictures them working together through the middle and with Lukas on the wings. Poldi is a versatile player and pretty much play anywhere up front. What is clear is that while Poldi is not here to replace RvP, he is here to give us another lethal option BESIDES Robin.

That’s it for now – we’ll see you on the flip side. Stay Goonerish!!

    Juventus is back!

And ONE game away from an undefeated season too!!!

First season in their new stadium … so I guess not all teams that build new stadiums go into “transition”.

Juventus have reverted back to their usual. SOLID DEFENSE. They have conceded only 19 goals all season. Basically half a goal a game! Every other team has conceded far more!

And it’s not like they don’t score, they are the second highest scorers.

BUT look at this: Reports in Italy for the last two weeks are that they are already looking to acquire Vidic, Goetze and …. Robin Van Persie!

Both agents of Goetze and RvP have actually been in Turin recently (confirmed facts). They are ready to make RvP the jewel in their crown. And according to reports, are offering up to 250k per week!

RvP would be stupid to turn that down. Apart from the money, he would be in a really solid team that just does not concede! A team with solid midfield and forwards, that wants to win NOW. And often.

So apparently Juve are NOT messing around. They mean freaking business.

I guess that’s what a serious club looks like.

      @Fred,
Italian Football is declining the last 5 Years. At this point in time
Germany has the stronger league so Goetze wont go there despite the fact
that he just extended his contract in Dortmund so he isn’t going anywhere.

      • Fred 6 May, 2012 at 23:53 Log in to Reply

        @Ty,

I don’t dispute that Italian football is on the decline.
And I am a big fan of the Bundesliga. I lived in Germany for
        over a decade.

I am commenting on Juve’s AMBITION. And even after Goetze
signed a new contract in March, his agent was PICTURED in
Turin in April, so the press had a field day with that. If
the price is right nothing stops a club from selling any player
no matter when they extend their contract.

RvP’s agent was also in Turin talking with Juve officials in
        mid-April.

While I agree the Bundesliga has a strong league, it is all
about perception. Juventus will always be a “big” club in
        any player’s eyes.

@Fred, obviously, going an entire season is an amazing accomplishment, especially in a top tier league… which Serie A is still a TOP league, but they have even more draws than Arsenal’s unbeaten season… (and I hear even folks on this site say… oh, they had 12 draws!)… I think Juve has 15 or 16.
I can’t get past the match-fixing shit that happened (or happens)…
there’s even a site called “anti-juve”… that highlights the “cheating”… in videos, so…
I can’t support or even like Juventus.

Having said that, they play great defense… and that has to be commended.
Even winning the league, as you said, they aren’t looking to sit pat, they’re looking to improve.

The main difference between Man U and Man City is
    YAYA TOURE.

    Clutch player.

Watching him glide vertically passed three oppo players is just to reminiscent of Patrick Vieira.
That is just a killer quality in the EPL.

Not only a physical presence in midfield but the
    effortless movement down the middle.

If you are playing THREE midfielders in the EPL,
surely you should have someone like that (or at least try to have someone like that).

Instead we have three “feisty” midgets – who allegedly specialize in passing. Good luck winning with ONLY that.

    • stag133 6 May, 2012 at 22:15 Log in to Reply

@Fred, We had about 5 chances to sign Yaya Toure.
I personally stumped for him for about 2 consecutive seasons.

  3. Ty 6 May, 2012 at 13:56 Log in to Reply

Unbelievable I thought this time we woudn’t stink at crunchtime late in the season.
Every time when the money is on the line we manage to lay an egg. We had the easyest competition we had point to give we had everything in our favor and still we managed to fuck it up.

Song is a solid midfielder and a great dm. He has everything a good dm needs just has to learn that he isn’t messi and should never ever dribble. Great tackling good vision good passing and every now and then he can show a flash of brilliance. But Wenger has to play him that way and tell him to just sit the fudge back and clean everything up in front of our backline.

Podlski is comming lets hope 2-3 good transfers follow.
And lets go City and Bayern never thought I would pull for those two Clubs but we managed to crumble late again.

      @Ty,

I’ve always like Bayern personally… Classy club for the most part

    • stag133 6 May, 2012 at 22:16 Log in to Reply

@Ty, Song is not a “GREAT” anything.
Sorry. He is not close to GREAT at any aspect of his game.
He’s a good solid player… who like most of the players in the team, really lacks consistency.

  4. joshuad 6 May, 2012 at 06:00 Log in to Reply

ahh, the defensive midfielder. to me, the most important position on the pitch. protects the defense, connects defense to offense, and vice versa. also, in my opinion, the most difficult position. remember when the galcticos lost makelele? remember when the invincibles lost gilberto? remember after the 07-08 season when arsenal lost gilberto, diarra, and flamini? look at liverpool since they’ve lost xabi alonso. look at chelsea since they’ve re-instated mikel and dropped that kid from barcelona. look at juventus since they’ve acquired pirlo. the list goes on. now, we can say, remember in 11-12 when arsenal lost arteta?

fred, i agree that we need a dm but i don’t think song is that guy. wenger brought in arteta and arsenal have done well with him at dm. song and arteta together are very solid. to me, playing dm is more cerebral than physical and requires you be alert all the time. i’m unsure if song is consistent enough to play dm. there was a time when song wasn’t consistent enough to keep denilson out of the team. what’s cetain is aaron ramey is not ready.

    • George 6 May, 2012 at 07:15 Log in to Reply

      @joshuad,
I think the thing about Arteta is the fact when Song goes forward he will cover, he has the intelligence to play that role whereas Ramsey does not. Therefore we shouldn’t try to use him in that role as it has backfired, and while were missing Mikel we need to do what we did in the one game we won without him, tell Song to sit and play AOC and Rosicky in attacking midfield positions and just go for it. Attack has to be the best form of defence without Mikel in the team

    • Fred 6 May, 2012 at 19:24 Log in to Reply

      @joshuad,

Arteta is NOT a DM, never has been, never will be. Just because he can
competently cover when Song goes AWOL, doesn’t mean he can do it full time.

We NEED a FULL TIME DM who sits 80-90% of the time AND is also supported by
a second midfielder like Arteta. That is what EVERY OTHER top team that
has ever won does it. That is how WE DID it when we actually used to WIN.
And having a fulltime DM doesn’t mean the DM never ever leaves.
Mikel ventures forward at opportuned times, and Makelele was known to have
      scored a few goals.

Until we solve this 8 year old midfield madness we will NEVER come close to
competing for anything. And we’ll be in this exact same situation next year.

  5. stag133 6 May, 2012 at 00:29 Log in to Reply

the craziest thing to think about is… if we hadn’t been embarrassed 8-2 by ManU, its HIGHLY UNLIKELY Wenger would have made either move for Arteta and/or Benayoun.
These two have proven to be key players for us this season.
I think we’ve not won ANY games without Arteta in the line-up, and Benayoun has played well in the later part of the season… definitely shown more determination than MOST of the players in the line-up.

Just a really poor effort today, especially in the first half… that’s 3 consecutive matches in which this shit has occurred… THAT IS 99% on the MANAGER.
Lack of readiness in HUGE matches.

You can play poorly, and if your defense is solid… you can escape…
but you can’t escape horrible defending… there is no place to hide this porous defense… and we’ve paid for it dearly.

  6. Fred 5 May, 2012 at 22:36 Log in to Reply

I’ve been hollering for years that we need Song to PLAY as a DM and stop roaming around, … but no … Wenger either never does it … and everybody else here lambasts me and claims Wenger has “never used a DM” which is a BIG lie or that a DM is not really necessary.

Maybe now, you guys would come around to it. We will NEVER EVER come close to even competing for ANYTHING (let alone winning) without sorting out the midfied’s protection of our defense.

As USGunner rightly observed, too many mediocre teams RUN RIGHT DOWN OUR MIDDLE UNCHALLENGED! That is criminal.

No team has EVER won squat without a solid defensive midfield gameplan.

And no, don’t tell me anything about “rotating” defensive positions. That is utter bollocks.

It needs to be decided what Song is, if he wants to roam around he can NOT be a DM, and someone else that actually wants to play DM and can play it competently must be brought in.

Unfortunately, we are not going to qualify for the Cl next year, so we’ll not be able to attract any solid player in the summer.
    ———————————————-

The DM issue is just one of NUMEROUS problems that we have been carrying for years and have not come close to solving.

The big, neon-light, glaring problem remains … Arsene P. Wenger.

But I’m sure even when we finish fifth most fans will still sing his praises and treat him like the god he thinks he is.

  7. Caribkid 5 May, 2012 at 22:03 Log in to Reply

Lambert takes a team of Championship quality players with 1/6th our wage bill, comes to our home with nothing to play for, scores 3 goals and secures a draw.

That sounds like good coaching to me, especially in light of his salary which is supposed to be about 1/4 Mill.

Our 7 Million manager can’t organize or motivate his players with the 8th highest wage bill in all of football. I am absolutely disgusted.

    • George 6 May, 2012 at 07:12 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid,
Lambert for Wenger’s replacement? I’d have him, the job he’s done at Norwich is brilliant, and I personally rate him more than Rogers.

  8. Caribkid 5 May, 2012 at 17:14 Log in to Reply

This team lacks a lot of Football 101 basics. Poor organization and shape, and inability to adjust tactics on the fly.

That sounds like poor coaching. Just take a look on the teams which have beaten us with half the talent pool available.

When we went ahead what did the opposing coach do? Added another striker because he knew we were susceptible.

Norwich drawing with us at home after scoring 3 goals and everything on the line is totally unacceptable. Like I said yesterday, we should have started Ox on the left, dropped Ramsey and played Santos with Song and Rosicky and go for broke against a team which has no defense and 2 of their best defenders out.

As an Arsenal fan of 11 years I have watched 3 of our 4 worst performances this season:
    2-8 to Manu
    0-4 to AC Milan
3-3 Norwich at home with everything on the line.

Like I have been saying for 2 years, no matter who we bring in, our biggest signing will have to be a defensive and tactical coach. Of course, Wenger the control freak will never allow that.

Sorry for the rant, but I’m joining ranks with Stagg :)

    • US Gunner 5 May, 2012 at 19:34 Log in to Reply

@Caribkid, I agree. We need to change the whole mindset defensively. We should bring in Dixon. IMO, he’s got the experience, personality and knowledge to be a very good modern coach (I do not rate Adams as a coach). I’m re-watching the goal highlights:

      1. Teams are just too easily able to run through the middle and right at our defense (bring in M’Vila)
      2. Our back line is all over the place. Many of the technical decisions by our defenders are questionable (1st and 2nd Norwich goals), and attacking players can too easily find seams/gaps in behind our defenders (3rd goal). The problem seems to be most apparent on our left side. Ever since Ashley Cole left our left side has provided an open invitation to opposing teams.

Our being so prone to concede soft/ugly goals has now left us in a very tenuous position. Hopefully Spurs buy the cheap pasta again!

@OziKenyan, Agreed. When it counted most we couldn’t/wouldn’t step up – and against such mediocre opposition. Thoroughly disappointing . . .

  11. George 5 May, 2012 at 15:40 Log in to Reply

I think against WBA, we need to completely go for it AC Milan style. Id take Ramsey out and bring the Ox in and make sure Song has instructions to sit. Thats the only way were gonna win, we don’t have arteta and without him we’re not defensively good enough to sit on a 1 goal lead for 10 minutes (as was proven today) and therefore the only choice is to go out and score. Press from the 1st minute to the 98th, make sure the attitude is right (show them the league table if it isn’t) and score lots of goals

  12. joshuad 5 May, 2012 at 15:37 Log in to Reply

good game to watch for the neutral. being arsenal fans, we’re far from neutral. the worst thing that could have happened to arsenal was the early goal. after the goal, the team went into crusie control but norwich didn’t. suddenly the were a goal up.

did well to come back but not good enough. not happy with szczesny’s attitude. seemed to be disinterested. it was the worst game i’ve ever seen him play. lastly, ramsey was a complete waste. it wasn’t until after he went off that arsenal started to play good football. sorry boys, but i don’t think that’s a coincidence. he was completely outplayed by an 18 year old kid. if i’m honest, i don’t see a place for him in this side, now or in the future. we’ll see.

    • stag133 6 May, 2012 at 00:19 Log in to Reply

@joshuad, Ramsey was not good, agreed, but what about how porous the defense is? how about how shit Vermaelen and Koscielny were? They are NOT A GOOD PAIR at CB… if you are not strong up the middle of the pitch, you will get shredded regularly…. we have to the tune of 47 goals conceded, with one to play.
You can blame Ramsey, but its not all on him… the Professor gets a LOT of the blame, and the defense gets a far bigger portion than Aaron Ramsey, in my world.

The cavalier attitude, the lack of readiness in such important matches… the lack of a plan … poor substitutions… (Still bringing on Chamakh, really?)… so much of this mess falls at the feet of Arsene Wenger…
there is no way around it.
If we didn’t lose 8-2 to United, we never even would have brought in Benayoun and Arteta… we would have went with the shit that we had.

  13. stag133 5 May, 2012 at 14:54 Log in to Reply

Definitely do NOT deserve 3rd place.
Amateur defending display, and can’t finish chances inside the box repeatedly.

Just ridiculous and sickening to watch.

i feel your pain, stag. however, there’s got to be a bit of perspective. first, norwich played their hearts out. hats off to them. arsenal don’t have a divine right to win any game.

second, how many times have we seen szczesny concede a goal like the first one today? even the second goal took a wicked deflection. the midfield should have done more to protect the defense so it’s not all square on the defense. atleast we could see what song was doing but i’m clueless to what ramsey was doing. i’d prefer denilson in the holding role to ramsey in any central midfield position. he’s not good enough and was completely outplayed by an 18 year old when aoc came on. we’ll see how that plays out.

this result is huge. arsenal can win their last two games with chelsea losing the champions league final and still not finish in the top four. this is a potentially catastrophic result. will van persie and song sign new deals? will arsenal be able to attract necessary talent to make the team better? we’ll have to wait and see.

@joshuad, There is ONE game left for Arsenal, not two…
and SONG should be SHIELDING the back 4, not Ramsey…
Song is the one that supposedly can play CB, and I don’t really think he covered himself with glory today either…

How many times do I have to watch opposing players weaving thru our brilliant defensive CB pairing?
How many times do they lose their man? crosses go by them or through them… that NEVER happened so regularly.. with the likes of even Sol Campbell at the back… or even Kolo Toure… never mind Tony Adams or Winterburn…

The defensive problems over the last 3 or 4 years especially are down to WENGER.

Having got ourselves back in it all we need to do is keep our foot on the ball for 10 minutes and suck the life from the game. Instead, we may have blown 3rd

    OK.
I guess expecting this team to SHOW UP for a massive home game, against a team who is playing for nothing is too much to ask…

    HORRENDOUS first half.
We are in REAL TROUBLE of LOSING today.

This is quite frankly, one of the WORST Arsenal defenses I have ever seen.
I know Koscielny is just BRILLIANT and FLAWLESS… but somehow, Norwich is parading through our box at will…
It was a GREAT TACKLE by Koscielny, if he played in the NFL… he had a hold of the guys shirt, and took him down in the box… no idea how we escaped a penalty, because Norwich has a legit shout for 2 penalties.

    This team is SLEEPWALKING.
No passion, no determination, not a care in the world.

It’s an embarrassing first half display, and from what I just saw in the first 45… I wouldn’t wager a dime that we’ll win the game, and I’d say LOSS, as opposed to draw… because it looks like Norwich WILL SCORE AGAIN.

Sagna looks like he broke something again… it looks scary… when they go down like that, with just the ball hitting his leg… that doesn’t bode well.

    What is good to say?
Not good creating anything… Norwich have more possession… Norwich have had far more chances… look more confident and dangerous, and we look like we couldn’t care at all.

So, can Arsene Wenger motivate his team?
It does NOT look like any type of message has gotten through in the last 3 MATCHES… we are watching the same lackluster performance.

I called out for a leader or hero last week, and absolutely NOBODY stepped up.
RVP … where the hell have you gone?

OK. back to watching the 2nd half. So glad I got up early and EXPECTED us to win at home easily…

Sorry I haven’t been in GDC but my son’s baseball games all seem to be happening at the live match time.

Also sorry for the mix up on Vieira. I should know better but I don’t know why I always think of him as a DM maybe it was his tough as nail attitude. Or maybe it was writing the damn piece without any Caffeine in me. Who knows. Sorry for the confusion.

I’m sweating like pig trying to figure out which Arsenal team will show up.

Trying to figure out where the goals are going to come from if RVP doesn’t score a few. Hope we go with the OX and Gervinho paired up front with RVP, stick in Santos with Song and Rosicky in MF and go for broke.

Yup! I know it won’t happen.

Since when was Vieira an out and out holding DM? If M’Villa comes, I see some bench time for Song though. At least until M’villa settles in and gets up to speed. Unless Song steps up his game big-time (and he is probably capable of it).

I think my dream target is probably out of our reach unfortunately in Hazard.

@OziKenyan, Vieira was “whatever we needed” him to be…
he bossed the midfield… could play holding, could drive to the net…
haven’t seen anything like him since….

        @stag133,
        Not even YaYa Toure?

        • stag133 4 May, 2012 at 20:48

@George, Yaya is a good player, very good, but Vieira absolutely CONTROLLED the match, from midfield… was physical, when needed, drove forward, when needed, tackled well… Best I have ever seen at the position.

      @OziKenyan,

PV was never a DM at Arsenal unless we had injuries. Petit and then Gilberto held that role. He was merely the best box to box MF I have had the pleasure to see.

I fully expect Arsenal to THROTTLE Norwich.
    Call it a hunch.
Nothing for Norwich to play for… they give up goals… and they play somewhat open in style…
Nobody wants to get injured, so I doubt there will be much physical play…
that equates to Arsenal playing “Wenger Ball” where everybody is happy in a kickabout at the park.

    4-1 Arsenal, or more.

The FINAL game, will be the test… with everything to play for… and it whether we bottle it, and allow Spurs to take 3rd, or we rise up and take the 3 points and 3rd place, and the definite CL spot.

    carry on.
