This season trips up to the northwest haven’t been good to Arsenal, with the nightmares at Manchester United and Blackburn in the distance but still in the memory. Additionally, trips up to the DW have only yielded Arsenal 1 point in the last 2 years. In fact Arsenal have conceded 5 points from winning positions on their last two trips up to DW.  But this is a different Arsenal and they are chasing their 3rd successive win on the road this season.

Road form is going to have to be great over the next few weeks as Arsenal take to the road for their next 3 matches. This match against Wigan is followed up by a trip to Greece for the Champion’s League and then next weekend’s return to the northwest for a trip to the Etihad for the airline derby.

The good news for Arsenal is that many of the things we’ve been critical of them for seems to have been done away with. For instance, long chided for being the team that concedes the last goal and eventually the lead, Arsenal lead the league in turning the momentum of games in actually taking 7 points from losing positions. Additionally, out of 18 points available from their last 6 matches the Gunners have taken 16. Only City and Spurs have been as good.

At early pass this looks like a walk in the park for the Gunners but Wigan will have been bouyed by their impressive win over Sunderland (which subsequently got Steve Bruce fired). Wgian will be looking to press the home field advantage and see that the Gunners results up to the northwest are maintained. And considering their upcoming fixture list, Wigan will hope they can get something here with Chelsea, Liverpool and United in their immediate future.

The Gunners will likely roll out with at least 8 or 9 players different from the squad that took the pitch for the Carling Cup. Both Theo Walcott and Gervihno should start on the wings and give the Gunners the needed pace that was missing from the likes of Andrei Arshavin. The attack of Gervinho, Walcott and Gervinho reminds me quite strongly of the likes of Cavani, Lavezzi, and Hamsik at Napoli. Both groups play well with pace, have players that are prolific in front of the goal (and wanted by Man City) and have players who are skilled at setting up plays. All in all it could venture to be too strong for relegation struggling Wigan.

How the Match Should Play Out.

Its not any secret that the Gunners are going to want to take out the DW crowd before it has a chance to be the 12th man to Wigan. While Arsenal have proved deft at snatching late winners and equalizers they should come out looking to take care of the early chances that have been aplenty for them.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Robin Van Persie. He tried very hard to score against Fulham but didn’t net one. Hardly a cold spell. He’ll look to get back on trackat the DW.

Wigan: Roberto Matinez. Yeah I know he’s the manager. But he is one a lot of people have an affinity for. So do I. A good manager with a team with very limited resources. Would be nice to see how he would fare with a bigger club. Wigan haven’t been able to handle the pace of Arsenal and in the last two matches (Carling Cup and EPL) they have had two players sent off. They will have to mount a solid smart defence in order to make sure they don’t do it again. Since Martinez will be at home he doesn’t have the pleasure of sitting back for a defencive struggle which means he is likely to with a variant of the 4-3-3 with either Sammon or Rodaellga up front. Still, the Gunners are going to want to put this bed with a big match coming next week. Arsenal take their third in a row on the road.

Probable Starting XI:

Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal: Wilshere (ankle)  Sagna (ankle) Gibbs (hernia) Jenkinson (back fracture) Diaby (hamstring) Rosicky (hamstring)

The Final Word:

It is time for Andrei Arshavin to go. After another lacklustre performance I can no longer see the sense of keeping the Russian on this squad. During the 60 or so minutes he played against Fulham he created nothing and offered us nothing down the left side. I am not of the mind that it has anything to do with playing out of position. That’s an excuse for those people who would rather find fault with the manager than the player.

The thing is Andrei’s disappearing act isn’t limited to just Arsenal. He has been chastized in the Russian press for disappearing for large chunks of games. One russian paper went so far as to think it was time to either drop him completely or remove him from the national team completely. I’ve got a few Russian followers on twitter and they still can’t figure out why he is with us as he has only ever had 3 or 4 real good games for the national team.

A lot of people argue on his behalf that Andrei should be kept because he is the kind of player who can offer you that moment of magic. In nearly 3 years with the club Andrei has offered that magic to Arsenal exactly 3 times, – Liverpool away, Manchester United away and last year’s Champion’s League match against Barca. If we are keen to get rid of the likes of Denilson, Rosicky, Diaby and others who showed promise early but it never materialized consistently then it is time to three the bath water out the window. It’s time for Andrei to go.

If Andrei goes who comes in? Well, that’s a good question. John Cross lead his weekly Arsenal pieces with an exclusive that Arsenal intended to make a £30 million bid to Dortmund for Mario Gotze. The offer was intended to go with a high enough bid to entice Dortmund to act who continue to stress they won’t part with Gotze. It was also supposed to act as an enticement for Robin Van Persie that the Gunners are serious about maintaining their past level of competitiveness. And let’s be real, if they are serious about Gotze it is also intended to bring in a like for like replacement for Cesc Fabregas as he is the closest thing to our former Spanish captain out there in Europe.

Personally, I don’t think even if we bid we will get him. The thing about German clubs they are hardly in the financial nightmare that find other clubs often selling their talent. Even with Dortmund out of the Champion’s League they don’t need the cash.. Gotze though has had his head turned. And I see him either at Arsenal or Bayern to start next season.

The more interesting transfer rumour is the the one that has us linked to Lukasz Podolski. More so because he has been talking up Arsenal lately and how they play. I think this one has a better chance of going through in January than any other deal. Should Arsenal offload both Arshavin and Chamakh for say £15 million then the cost for Podolski would be only £5 million of the club’s money. This is the one to watch for folks. Especially given today’s news that Podolski has sworn there has been no contact with Arsenal.

That’s it for now. Well see you on the flip side. Until then, Stay Goonerish!!!

a great win on the road 4-0!
    that’s impressive.
spreading the scoring wealth around today…

tempered by Wenger saying we are going to have a quiet January in the transfer market…
that we have a big squad… and many attacking options…
and he goes back to his old TIRED line…
“only special players” will be considered.

    yawn.
    f*** OFF Wenger.

@stag133, Agreed, lets buy a ton of sh*tty players….. (And don’t you know better than to post after a win….Now we’re jinxed fo’ sho’, ah man…..)

@HighburyTerraceSteve, yes. me or anyone posting will jinx the team.
is that where you come from? jinxes and horcruxes?

HTS. The “special player” bullshit, is just the classic Wenger smokescreen. I think you are smart enough to know that, as you’ve seen and heard it 6 years running.

the “we have a big squad” says it all… again.
he’s convinced we’re just fine as we are.
        wonderful.

@stag133, Sorry about the jinxing stuff, I was channeling Fred…..

Right….Lots of players, no matter how good (as long as they cost a lot.)….More, more, more….got it….

          My sentiments exactly Steve

The news that will most likely piss off Arsenal fans has arrived, Arsene Wenger says he will not buy another striker as he has “too many”. For gods sake, we know we have Park and Chamakh, with Vela and Campbell out on loan, but what if RVP gets injured when our back up is playing the way Chamakh is at the moment.

Its ridiculous, we know we have many strikers Wenger, but what we don’t have is back ups with Quality, we need Podolski or Sow or whoever the hell wants to come. I feel we need a striker more than we need a MF like Gotze or M’Vila, if only to take the pressure off RVP knowing he has a Quality backup waiting in the wings

      @George,

This is the same man who said we weren’t selling Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri.

In terms of transfers I suggest you only believe what is final on the last day of the window.

      • HighburyTerraceSteve 3 December, 2011 at 11:42 Log in to Reply

@DaAdminGooner, Absolutely correct DAG, and it’s always surprising that people take AW’s statements at face value….Another factor is that Theo Walcott is likely our back-up at (lone) CF, if RVP (touch wood) were to get hurt….IMO, in the window, we should be looking to buy quality younger players who might not slot straight in. The idea that you just patch players directly into the first team is a function of too much Fantasy league….

Newcastle-Chelsea is gonna finish 0-3 but it was a LOT closer than that…..

Starting lineup for our match: Szczesny, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Andre Santos, Song, Arteta, Ramsey, Gervinho, Walcott, Van Persie.

Subs: Fabianski, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Djourou, Arshavin, Chamakh, Benayoun, Coquelin.

Wigan team – Al Habsi, Gohouri, McCarthy, Caldwell (c), Moses, Gomez, Sammon, Jones, Diame, Stam, Figueroa

    • stag133 3 December, 2011 at 13:39 Log in to Reply

@George, its pretty simple, and what I feared… Wenger is going to take this streak of good matches, and run wild with it…
he will probably by NOBODY, sell a few players, put more money in the coffers, and tell the world we can win the league with what we have, Sagna and Wilshire are like new signings…. Diaby is coming back (for the 5th time)…
      and…
once RVP gets injured and Gervinho goes to the ACN, we’ll be completely screwed AGAIN.
and he won’t understand the calls to fire him (AGAIN).

so, if he’s smart… he’ll supplement the team with a few extremely talented players, no matter what the price tag is, because after all, we made a BAZILLION on the sales of Cesc and Nasri.

  3. arteta3sheds 3 December, 2011 at 04:57 Log in to Reply

We do not need Gotze, so I cannot see why Arsene will pay £30 million for him. We have an abundance of riches in the MF, fantastic players like Wilshere, Coquelin and Frimpong waiting in the wings,we even got Lansbury out on loan. Why on earth would Wenger pay £30 mill for him? Certainly not as a back up for Gervinho.

Podolski as much I rated him back in the day, I have not seen much of him lately is a better option because he can play in a number of positions, if we sell Arsh for a good price, then maybe.

However, I cannot see Wenger paying £20 mil for him, that would be a club record. Wenger has bought Park, he will keep faith in him. I think he may end up using the Ox up front as another option, he does have the ability to play there.

No game is easy especially away from home, but I expect a good victory 3-1, 3-0, something like that.

      @arteta3sheds,

Agree with most of it. Regarding GOtze: I don;t think we’ll get him (see previous thread on thought why). But why would we consider spending 20-30mil on him? Cuz he’s that damn good! For 20 I’d say Arsene would snap him up no second thoughts if everything else fell into place

    • stag133 3 December, 2011 at 13:36 Log in to Reply

@arteta3sheds, yeah, we don’t need anybody.
we have an abundance of riches all over the pitch.
Can’t figure out why we’re not undefeated, or even 5th…
don’t want to bring anyone in that will mess things up for this wonder-team.

      • artete3sheds 5 December, 2011 at 09:01 Log in to Reply

@stag133, Ahh come off it Stag.

  4. stag133 3 December, 2011 at 01:26 Log in to Reply

It goes against Arsenal “sense” to go get Gotze for 30 Million, but he’s exactly what the club need, to spend that much on a player to signal intent… and to bring in that “talent level” … to replace that talent level that left this Summer.
If its 30 Million, its a BARGAIN if we can sell off Arshavin, Chamakh, and Squillaci.

Remember, we made a GAZILLION with the sales of Nasri, Cesc and Clichy…

I’d love Cahill in, but Podolski would be great too…

I’d like the Arsenal to fire that Cannon on the logo… and signal our intent to GO FOR IT … for f’n once…

    Wigan.
yes, we should …. and need to roll this inferior team.
Have to keep winning, keep pace with those above us at the very least…

Fortunately, we can rest everybody for the CL match in Greece, as we’ve already done the deed…. so play all the best players, and come home with 3 big points.

    2-1 win.

  5. George 2 December, 2011 at 19:11 Log in to Reply

Interesting point about Andre DAG, I had a thought. I know many people will scream Hazard but I was thinking if we did buy Gotze against all the logic that is our club, he could play in a similar role to what Na$ri played last season, on the left Wing Cutting inside or drifiting into the middle. Admittedly it wont be as effective as the Gervinho/Walcott constantly switching sides but it could be a good replacement for when Gerv buggers of to the ACN in January. Hell, it couldnt be worse than Arshavin I spose…

    • OziKenyan 3 December, 2011 at 08:40 Log in to Reply

      @George,

He coulddd, but it’d be wasting his central talent IMO. Moot point anyway, I’d say chances we see Gotze in an Arsenal shirt at less than 5%
