“[It reminds me of the final game at Highbury] a little bit because the qualifying was the same, with the Champions League at stake.” – Arsene Wenger on the this season’s final game.

Before I write any match preview up I do a lot of reading trying to get the ins and outs of style of play of the opponent, who’s in who’s out all that kind of stuff. And as I’ve read in preparation of this match pretty much to a tee every blog, every pundit and right down to the official dot com all have stated the same exact sentiment –

It all comes down to this.

Yes, the final game of the season. Where Arsenal finish, well just like it was last week and the week before and well, the week before that, it’s all up to them.  Win, and you have no concern for what the hell happens below you. Draw or lose, and well, I hope everyone prayers or believes in miracles because that is what it’s likely going to take.

Spurs sit a point off with Fulham visiting the Lane. You’d think that Fulham would have a chance for at least a draw but their best player Clint Dempsey is out. Newcastle take on Everton, which is a tough match. But West Brom at home looks to be a toughie for us.

Last week West Brom played Bolton and looked to go down to the sword earlier falling behind their opponents 2-0. But not intent to send new England manager, Roy Hodgson off in a whimper, the Baggies fought back and drew 2-2. Sure part of that was down to a weak Bolton team relaxing after going up 2. But given our propensity for shipping in goals it’s something we have to take into account.

Roy tends to set his teams in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. They’ll be without Chris Brunt definitely and possibly Jerome Thomas. Peter Odemwingie faces a late test which means Fortune will likely lead the line. Fortune isn’t a prolific scorer (actually no one on WBA is – they average just over 1 goal per game home and away.) but he is working well up front and causing teams problems.

Sure, Roy Hodgson’s teams don’t set the world alight but he gets them play committed football and we should expect them to not roll over and let Arsenal tickle their bellies. It is Roy’s last day and he saved them last season and put them on a course of respectability. They are solid on aerial play and get a lot of joy and goals from set pieces however, they concede a lot of goals on the counter. They have only managed 19 goals at home this season (the same as Wolves) but they have only conceded 19 at home (the same as Manchester United).

Arsenal head into Wenger’s 600th Premier League match with everything at stake. Champion’s League football, the possibility of Robin Van Persie staying or going, the ability to bring in quality talent, and in my opinion just as important – pride.

Arsenal may not have won a damn thing in 7 years. It is still recognized as a leader and team to respect and emulate in world football. The position in the table and the continued success with 15 years of Champion’s League football are a level of consistency that most clubs want to emulate and of course better.  A lot of wounds will open up tomorrow at 1700 GMT/1200 EST should the undesirable happen.

There can be no overestimating opponents or assuming things are locked down no. If it means you are trying to churn out 7 goals for a full 90 minutes the team simply cannot afford to let off the gas for the full 90 minutes. As last week showed, it only takes a couple to put things back upside down. No, Arsenal simply have to be the best team on the pitch for the full 90 not in spurts.

It has been a long drawn out slog of a season. From the heartwrench of Manchester United, Blackburn, QPR, Fulham and others, to absolutely being class of the day versus, Cheslea, City, and especially Tottenham the emotions of every gooner and every player have been on one up and down ride. A lot of people I have chatted with just want this season to end. They want to move on to next season. They need a bit of a break but if we win, the signings the club want to make come in, then hope springs eternal for next season.

How the Match Should Play Out.

The early goals will be key for Arsenal. Yes, I said goals. The more open the game is the more it keeps the game open. Also in their last 20 home games WBA have conceded the first goal 7 times winning only once , drawing none and losing 6. As we have said Arsenal need to be aggressive for the entire game. The gas simply cannot go be let go of here.

I’d prefer Wenger go with a 4-4-2 with Chamakh up front and Robin Van Persie slotted just off of him. In the Norwich game last week we created better chances in 15 minutes with that lineup than we did all game (probably an exaggeration but you get the point.) But we’ll probably come in with our 4-3-3 variation.  I think Benyaoun who has been a work horse over the last few weeks will start which means either Chamberlain or Gervinho on the right. One the right Gervinho hasn’t been as effective as he has been on the left so I am opting for Chamberlain in my projection.  I think the desired speed and guile we need we can get from Chamberlain and its time teams got to see more of what they may expect next season. The question obviously is in the midfield for Arsenal where Ramsey, Rosicky and Song seem to be the preferred team with Arteta out. The problem is where is Wenger going to put Rosicky. If he takes him in the Arteta role with Ramsey sitting front, he takes out his more dynamic and creative threat for the most part. If he puts Ramsey in the role Arteta played so well this season, then he creates a defensive liability. I just don’t know.

Caution to the wind, Arsenal with all to play for and West Brom looking to send their manager over to England in style in pride. However, for my money Arsenal haven’t lost on the last day of the season since 2005. They won’t do it again – they will win.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal. Robin Van Persie. One goal ties Henry’s mark for a season and equals Shearer and Ronaldo. Two goals and he sets a new mark for a 38-game season.

West Brom. Roy Hodgson. Roy gets a lot of stick for his speech defect but he has shown himself to be a force of stability and consistency as a manager. While Liverpool did not do well under him (for reasons beyond his control) has done well with the talent he has. Which is why he makes absolute sense as England manager.

The Final Word.

It has been a long and wooly season. In the US during game time its churches and mother’s day celebrations in the UK is showdown sunday. And when was the last time the last day of the season had so much at stake outside the relegation battle? It really will be an exciting, nerve wracking day.

YAMA won’t be shutting down for the summer. We’re still planning on bringing you regular content. Over the next few weeks we’ll do season end reviews, a live chat wrapping up the season, and season end awards. Additionally, YAMA plans to track key Arsenal players in the major tournaments of the summer, the Euros and Olympics. When that’s all said and done we’ll be right ready to go with the pre-season and subsequent tour.

Personally, as an editor I would like to quickly thank our newest additions to the team, Alex, Myles and Raj who have all added a tremendous amount to the site. Jamie Dalton is still around and as you’ve read pops up from time to time do one of his quick hit pieces. It has been a yo-yo season for the team but the YAMA crew it was a pretty good year and frankly, I am looking forward to next season as we grow further.

Thanks all for reading, commenting, screaming and sharing. Thanks for being an Arsenal Supporter.

For all you folks that think CITY bought the title…
If you put their starting 11 next to ManU’s…
there is only an 8 Million GBP difference.
    United 161 Mill v City 169 Mill.

They did the same exact thing that United did … Chelsea did…
and frankly, that’s allowed by the rules.

If you want to win, you have to compete with the big boys financially, SOMEWHAT. You have to TRY to make shrewd buys of course, but you pick your spots for “that special player”…

    • DaAdminGooner 14 May, 2012 at 04:04 Log in to Reply

      @stag133,

I would say yes, the bought the title. Nearly a billion pounds in 3 years? Who cares what the rosters cost – United’s investment is over a longer period of time – much longer. Plus United have and had a penchant for promoting within and developing players.

For City how many of that squad of 22 actually were developed in the City system 1 or 2?

The rules are flawed but you are right while they exist this way you have to find a way to TRY and work in the system. Agreed, that you have to be shrewd with who you by. You don’t need a ton of special players. Dortmund, Montpellier & Juventus are examples of that. They have a special player or two, 2-3 really solid players, and then cadre of GOOD players and a good squad. Dortmund to me is the model of excellence. They’ve taken what Arsenal set out to do and done it right and well. :The develop from within, the buy shrewdly and they bring in the right talent to fit their system. Wenger hasn’t done that recently. We’ve gone down the why’s and wheres of that on many occasions no need to do it again.

There is still some work to do. Podolski is the right first step. I think M’Vila will happen in short order and other transfers I will be interested in seeing are Kagawa – Arsenal were in attendance on Saturday and Klopp had some interesting Arsenal related comments, I do not think Jan Vertonghen is coming to Arsenal. Dependent on what happens with Chelsea versus Bayern, Vertonghen could shun Spurs and go to United. The defencive target for Arsenal fans to keep an eye is Yanga-Mbiwa of Montpellier.

And then of course there is the Van Persie issue. Personally, think something has already been agreed upon. Nothing more than a feeling. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him sign a extension of even 1 to 2 years.

@DaAdminGooner, DAG, United spent HEAPS of money to get to the level they are at… it has to be done to get into “the top group” in the EPL…
Chelsea spent crazy money to get into the elite group as well.
Its not even debatable… they aren’t doing anything that’s new to the EPL.

I don’t think RVP will sign anything, unless we bring in players first.
He’d be crazy to do so…
and while Podolski is a nice player, and I like what I have seen of M’Vila, (though he’s not signed)…
as I have said ad nausuem… DEFENSE is where it matters most… and we were POOR at at the back yet again today…
I am sure you think Koscielny and Vermaelen played well… but I didn’t see it that way… and WBA were a threat to score a 3rd up until the end of the match… might have done so if Gibbs didn’t slide in and save at the day.

It should prove an interesting next few weeks…
It is time NOT to skimp on a CB, but to go out and get the BEST PROVEN CB we can find, at WHATEVER the COST… and a DM worth his salt as well…

I’m not holding my breath on any Arsenal signing… because very quickly, Wenger has reverted back to his BS and rhetoric in regard to signings…

      • George 14 May, 2012 at 08:25 Log in to Reply

        @DaAdminGooner,
Is there anything concrete on us signing M’biwa? Ive never seen him play but apparently he’s decent and he’s young as well. With him and M’Vila and the dead wood removed, and of course RVP signing a new contract whats to say we cant challenge next season? Unless all this talk of M’Vila is utter BS and were cashing in on Van Persie and not challenging for trophies again next term

        • DaAdminGooner 14 May, 2012 at 11:37

Mbiwa is a name that popped up a few weeks ago as a target. He seems to be a good strong kid and would likely be a good 4th for a season and then part of the standard rotation.

But I could also see us not going for a CB and seeing how Ignasi Miquel is developing

        • George 14 May, 2012 at 12:27

          @DaAdminGooner,
Actually I do like the look of miquel, he spent a lot of time playing LB this season and i remember he came on against City and didnt do much wrong. But Id like us to flog djorou and get Mbiwa

Oh and whats your thoughts on Kyle Bartley?

I can’t remember an Arsenal season with so little interest. I watched very few games – sleep was far more rewarding than yet another empty season to get in to next seasons Champions League….press repeat.

Predictably the Wenger spin-machine has clicked in straight away, the early season embarrassment caused by his off-season non-management is now forgotten and rescripted as an example of this teams mental strength. Many Wenger-lovers will adopt that mantra as their own. Already he’s softening supporters up to a season of inactivity – he’s already got a squad capable of 4th or 3rd so why try to upgrade?

Nasri, Clichy and Toure can celebrate their League winners medals while Arsenal supporters await another off-season of “will our captian stay”?

The other point of non-interest that will be much debated is Bould’s appointment as assistant. I doubt much will change. The patterns, values and approaches that Wenger demanded from his coaching staff will simply be expected of Bould. Remember Rice was a defender of arguably greater repute than Bould and he didn’t resolve Arsenal’s defensive imbalance over the years – indeed, it got worse. The issue, I think, is with the Boss, and I can’t see Bould jeopardising his lucrative position by demanding a George Graham approach to defence – it won’t happen.

If RvP has a real desire to win something like a League title or a Champion League trophy he should learn from the example of Henry, Toure, Clichy, Nasri and importantly Fabregas. Fabregas listened to Wenger’s pleas and delayed his move by a year and missed the Guardiola boat. Nasri was hard-nosed (as always), jumped with Fabregas at first opportunity after a good half-season and is a winner-grinner.

Van Persie doesn’t have a lot of time at the top-top left. His body has never been strong and he has the opportunity now to go to any club he wants – next season he’ll be a year older and injuries may have kicked in again. The signs are already there, Wenger won’t change, he’ll do the minimum to keep the team getting CL qualification but not to step up to challenge. The team will continue to be flakey, Van Persie should go.

    • stag133 14 May, 2012 at 03:29 Log in to Reply

@Kiwi, unfortunately Kiwi, I agree on RVP.
If I were him, I most certainly would wait until Arsenal make MOVES… to decide what I am going to do.
If we sign M’Vila… then Vertonghen… and then… or other(s)… and he can see that we ARE going to make a move and a push for a trophy next season… OK, sign a new contract at the club.
UNTIL we make those moves, I would NOT sign anything… that 100 puts the ball in Wenger & the Boards court.

If we don’t sign quality players, just say… I want to win, its time to go… I won’t sign a new contract.
Then the club will IMMEDIATELY Ca$h him in, and if he wants to stay in England, I am sure City or United will take him off our hands,no questions asked, and we can continue to sell to teams above us.

Agree completely, Kiwi. Fewest matches I’ve watched in years. (I’m not even going to bother typing more, as I expect this will be deleted like everything else I’ve tried to post this season. And there’s nothing much new to say, anyway.)

Just an incredible day of football.
Another rubbish performance from Arsenal, who really did NOT deserve a win today. Let’s be honest.
ALL 3 of our goals, could have been stopped… 2 SHOULD have been.
There keeper was our most valuable player…

but sometimes that is football, and sometimes its better to be LUCKY than good.
Today we rode our luck, and hopefully, with a few more signings, we can convince RVP to stay on at the club.

The HIGH DRAMA in Manchester was amazing… United once again looked to have won the title… leading in extra time, while City were LOSING! But once again, City snatched victory from the jaws of defeat…. and they deserved to lift that trophy. 2 goals in stoppage time… has to be the best finish to a title race ever…

Painful to see Nasri and Clichy and Kolo celebrating on the stage… as we helped City win their title buy selling starters to a rival.

May the Summer transfers commence immediately… and may we get our business done quickly, so we can all sit back… enjoy the Olympics and Euro 2012… and if we can sign the likes of M’Vila and Vert the Defender… and sell off some of the dead wood, we can actually look forward to next season.

Something tells me, it won’t be that easy!
    but here’s hoping.

    City – HOLY F**K!!!

Don’t know if that was as good as Anfield 89 but WOW!

And Arsenal- true to form this season- go up 1, down 1, back up 1. The back-and-forth game today was a microcosm of Arsenal’s season, while this game along with the City game were microcosms of the entire league season. And what a league season it was! The most exciting a non-Arsenal title season has been.

DAG and all the YAMA writers- thanks for being there every step of the way this year. We really do appreciate it.

On a serious note, lets not have a season like this again please, felt like i was gonna have a heart attack today when i saw us drawing and spurs winning. Just a quick note to say thanks to Lukasz Fabianski Mk2 a.k.a Martin Fulop

Wenger’s making the wrong noises from a fan’s point of view, has something changed with the M’Vila deal? Hope the players act like they care today, don’t care who starts so long as they give 110% each, lets hope we win though and crash Roy’s sendoff party

  8. stag133 13 May, 2012 at 02:35 Log in to Reply

I HOPE Theo is able to play…
and I PRAY Chamakh is not even on the bench…
    I’d bet Ramsey starts…

Regardless of the line-up, who is in, who is not…
I believe it will all depend on if Arsenal decide to play hard, determined and as-if our CL hopes depend on it.
The last 3 matches, we’ve played like it doesn’t matter much… even though the matches were huge.

So, if the players show up to play, we should win… if not, we’ll drop points and finish out of the top 3…

As usual, good write up DAG.

Wenger, being Wenger I don’t see him changing his preferred 4-3-3 formation for the game. Who in the hell knows though, desperation breeds desperate measures. Also don’t see him starting Ramsey because of his horrific recent form and the OX because of the importance of the game.

With all our injuries He doesn’t have a lot of choices though so we might see either Ramsey or Ox get a start. Hopefully he doesn’t start an unfit Walcott after being out with a Hammie and whom hardly ever shows up for big games.

personally, I would put Le Coq at RB, tuck Benayoun into the middle and have Santos and Gervinho on the wings in support of RVP.

It’s a big day with everything on the line so let’s see which Arsenal shows up.

    Here’s to the ARSE.

    • HighburyTerraceSteve 12 May, 2012 at 23:09 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid, I like your line-up, but I think
Theo will pass his late fitness test and start on the right. You suggest
that he doesn’t show up in big games, but how many of those have we really
played in his career? Whoever plays “needs to show up”, “play the full
ninety”, “get the job done”, and a million other cliches…. I too wouldn’t
mind sitting Aaron (his 2nd touch is a tackle….) Ramsey, but I fear that
AW is committed to him as stand-in for Arteta…..

One thing not mentioned above was that the return match was
probably one of our best of the season. WBA set out very
conservatively and we made them pay. The match was only available with
Spanish commentary (here in the States) and there was something really
nice (pacy) about the way we were moving the ball around, which might have
been enhanced by the non-HD feed. The midfield three of Song, Arteta and
Ramsey were quite dominant and Theo and RVP were lively scoring and/or
      assisting for the goals.

But that was in November….Obviously we need to break the Can’t-Win-
Without-Arteta jinx. Maybe the squad should win it FOR Arteta (and Sagna)
and others who can heal up over the summer and get another go-round in
the big tournament, where even less than dominant teams can win. (Dortmund
crushed Bayern today, 5-2, to seal their domestic double, Chelsea will
      finish 6th in England….)

Fingers crossed for the needed result….In fact, I feel like a kid, very
nervous and wound up for the match. Hopefully it translates into something
      good….

Ditto. I’m extremely nervous and have a bad feeling that the Arteta curse will not be broken. Wearing my lucky Arsenal jocks for this one :)

A very important match.. We need to win and forget about what spurs nd n’castle are playing, the tension of last sunday was too much..
I think Chamakh should start too..he looked lively..bt if we go ahead with 4 3 3..then Coq, Song nd Rosicky should start in midfield..Jenko at right back.. Personally i believe Rvp will score 2 goals for us..nd we will win

massive match, for the future of the club in some respect… and you want to START Chamakh?
    I am just baffled.

Wenger already spewing shit… just read for the master… it will be a quiet Summer at Arsenal, we have 34 players already, so we’ll have to pay 9 to sit… in regard to RVP, he said something like … you should ask the player…
He prefers the CL over Europa! no really?
and that he’s got Diaby and Wilshire coming back.

Sounds like we’re in for another Summer of bullshit from Arsenal…
heaven help us all if we don’t get 3rd place, and Chelsea win the CL.

Because it sounds to me, like that means RVP is gone, and we aren’t planning on replacing him…

    but whatever.
If we can manage to WIN a match that MATTERS on Sunday, the RVP equation should work itself out… though we could win, and he could still leave, if Wenger and the club don’t bring in players.
