Will he or won’t he? The 2012 summer Arsenal saga.
Well, the summer is now and truly upon us. And in the last few years it wouldn’t be an Arsenal summer without negative transfer speculation directed at the club. The latest, with none other than this year’s football player of the year, Robin Van Persie.
We all saw it coming. No discussions during the season as the team and player agreed. Robin expressed very early on that all he wanted to do was focus on football. And that he did and that focus combined with his best run of health since becoming a regular first teamer made him instantly the best player in the league.
But now the season is over. Now the club must confront a situation that has been a recurrent theme at Arsenal over the last few years. Because of the wage structure, focus on financial prudence, and youth rather than experience, the club has had its focus on winning questioned at the very heart of the club – by its players.
Star players have left every year for the last few years. It is a direct result of the changing landscape of the game as well as Arsenal’s priorities. Before we go on here, this is not an indictment of that policy. Frankly, there are rumblings in football that Arsenal’s policies may start to pay off. There have been a series of articles that Manchester United are now beginning to feel the pinch of their debt and are unable to do huge significant deals like they used to. It is telling that Shinji Kagawa of Dortmund met with the club this week and left without a deal. In the past a visit to United by a player of Kagawa’s skill would’ve resulted in an instant deal.
But I digress. This isn’t about finances. It’s about Robin.
Yesterday, Robin Van Persie, his agent Kees Vos, Arsene Wenger, Ivan Gazidis got down to talk. Before anyone believes what is in the press, no one knows for certain what was discussed. Some reports are that it was just a end of season discussion and plans for the summer. Some papers like the Mirror, Mail and Sun all say it was a contentious meeting. Right now, only 4 people know the truth. Over time it will be clear.
What I want to do in this space today is talk about the possibilities that exist for possible scenarios for Arsenal and for Robin. What are the likely outcomes?
Robin signs a new deal.
We’re talking a deal that would see him stay at Arsenal until he retires. It’s a win/win for everyone. Arsenal keep hold of their star player and Robin likely has gotten the assurances he needs that Arsenal intend to compete (within their model) for glory.
Arsenal forces Robin to stay
Robin has one year left on his contract, the club for all intents and purposes can just tell Robin, ‘we understand you, but we want you to see the last year of this contract out.’ To me this is the nuclear option. It creates so many unsavory issues, a player who may now feel unhappy to be held against his will, THE DEFINITE move by that player the following season, and the possible poison it could create within the locker room. This option while within the club’s rights, is not the one I would advise the club to go down.
Arsenal sell Robin
There is one thing in this whole saga I think we say is true – Arsenal are not going to sell to City any more. The players they have let go are players for whatever reason they felt okay letting go. The last Samir Nasri proving in his constant statements to the French press, that he is more about himself than any club. Arsenal do not want to sell Robin. But they may not have much of a choice if they cannot match his ambitions. If they sell, I see Robin being sold to recently crowned Serie A Champs Juve or to Madrid or Barcelona. I do not think Arsenal will sell to another Premier League side – if they have to sell.
Contract Extension
Early signs are that Arsenal are making moves in the right direction in terms of the transfers. YAMA still believes in its exclusive last week that Rennes Midfielder Yann M’Vila will announce his move to Arsenal – soon. Quite a few French outlets last night confirmed as much. Additionally, signing Podolski and now a heavy move for Shinji Kagawa (Arsenal and his reps setting a meeting) are all signs that the Gunners are looking to improve the squad significantly. Are these the types of moves that would move Arsenal into contention to challenge City? Are the enough to convince Robin of the club’s intent? The way to find out would be for Robin to sign a 1 year contract extension, and see how these additions net out.
If the moves that do happen don’t net out, the club wouldn’t begrudge Van Persie his move. RvP then would get his move and the club could sell him. The obvious problem here is that it puts fans on edge for yet another summer.
My gut.
I don’t know. I am asked every day via twitter, what do I think? I honestly don’t know. My passionate side says I expect a player who suffered through a string of injury riddled seasons to stand by the club that stood by him when calls came in for him to be sold because he would never get over his injuries. I would expect a player who had this to say in 2008 about Manchester City:
“No they haven’t put an offer in for me and they don’t have to bother! I’m really curious if Manchester City have a plan because it won’t work by only buying the most expensive players.
“It’s about a team. If all the pieces don’t click then the system will fail.
“In principle, Man City could have success but there has to be a philosophy with a whole staff who have a plan for the next four or five years.”
to not be enticed by big money.
Robin has always struck me as a sort of throwback. From all the interviews I’ve read and watched this is a guy who’s true passion is the game, playing with his teammates and being part of the club that made him the star he was. In a day and age when players are increasingly moved by their next big paycheck, his approach always seemed refreshing to me.
But he is right on one sense. Arsenal need to get back to what football clubs are supposed to do – win. Noone I’ve talked to begrudges the model we’ve set ourselves upon. We all for the most part applaud it but the detriment it has foisted on the ability to win has made the star players we have question its commitment to success.
Robin had this to say in 2008 as well:
“It is the principle,” said Van Persie. “It is very important that Arsenal keep these guys. This group is unique. If a number of them leave it will be different. I think of myself as an Arsenal man but Arsenal should also try to make sure that we all grow together.”
Very damning indeed. I still believe I am right in one respect – the move for Van Persie is not about money as much as the papers would like to make it out to be. It is about success for him. He is one of the best of his generation and surely wants to add something to that. An FA Cup winners medal from 2005 is not enough. Arsenal need to Robin with strong intent that they intend to move back in that direction.
I really don’t have a sense of how this is going to end. I pride myself on being able to gain some sort of understanding by reviewing everything possible. There are so many layers from Robin, the agents, the club and the players family that you could read into anything – any direction. Which is why I won’t speculate.
If he stays – I am chuffed. If he goes – sure I’ll be sad, others will be angry but the club went on long before him and will go on long after him.
Finally, a tweet I got yesterday that inspired me to write this – Cesc went home, Henry came home, Van Persie is home.
That’s all until tomorrow, when we’re back with our live chat event. More later.

Personally, although I would love to see RVP stay I could not blame him if he decides to leave for a better opportunity.
Matter of fact, outside of Flamini who played AFC and Arsene like a top, I have no hard feelings about any of our players leaving for other pastures. We speak about loyalty to the club, but clubs hardly show any loyalty to players. It’s a new world order when it comes to business and loyalty plays very little in the grand scheme of things.
Maybe I’m being cynical, but for the past 3 years we have had a cycle of making one early signing of a potential starter followed by a “big” youth signing, followed by the typical speech about LANS and finally, losing at least one good player and not adequately replacing them.
So far we have had the good signing and an imminent youth signing. The LANS speech has already started so I am waiting with unabated trepidation to see whether the Leopard has changed his spots. To genuinely improve we need to get at least 3 top players, Poli being the first.
A rarely told story is the one where Patrick Vieira had an annual running battle with Arsene Wenger when he was captain of Wenger’s star-laden team. Vieira was enormously ambitious and saw his role as each off-season pressuring Wenger into ensuring that he (Patrick) was surrounded by players of adequate quality. I remember that very well. So Vieira knows only too well what is going through Van Persie’s mind because he was also in that positon once.
What is different is this. The current team is a pale imitation of the Vieira-led team. Vieira was whinging about adding to an already strong 1st-team whilst RvP is wanting the 1st-team to be strong.
from PATRICK VIEIRA:
“Robin wants to win trophies,” Vieira said. “Arsenal have to show him he can do it with Arsenal. The best way for them to get him to sign a contract is to bring players to the club who can show him that the club are in the same line as him.
“It is really important because we know how Robin loves Arsenal – that is not the question, the question is how Arsene Wenger will convince Robin they can win trophies.”
ARSENAL could bring VIEIRA into the coaching staff in a minute. I am positive he’d rather be at Arsenal, than ManCity.
What we’re now getting has been coming for several years – it’s not a surprise. There was a time when we could claim that we only let go of players when we wanted to. And this was largely true albiet never completely so. Now our better players leave regularly – it’s undeniable.
This has enormous implications for our chances of winning anything. Wenger’s whole M.O. is based on squad continuity which leads to onfield synergy and an almost telepathic understanding of what the core players will do. Because of this our style of play has a fragility due to our reliance on the team being so finely tuned. This was even present in the truly great teams of Wenger’s early reign. Even these teams had an alarmingly fit when they encountered defeat – it was like everything had to be in sync or BANG, and back to the workshop for a major retune.
So to now, or more precisely the last period of 7 bad years, with our inability to retain our better players we are failing to knit together a cohesive team and certainly unable to attain and maintain the fine-tuning that Wenger-teams need. This does not bode well.
I’m 50/50 on whether Van Persie will stay. I do think he’s one of the less disloyal players but he has every reason to leave. He now seems to be fitter than he has been for 8 years, he is nearing the end of his true prime, if he signs for AFC again it will reduce his chances of another major move, and if he doesn’t move now he might not give himself enough time to ‘win’ with a new club.
You’ve got to see it through his eyes, if he joined another club this off-season it might take 2-3 years to win something with his new team. That would make him 32ish and there is no certainty on what shape he’ll be in at that stage of his career.
Look at the truly great Thierry Henry, left at 29, had a trophyless first season with Barcelona as he jockeyed for a good role in a great team. Years 2 and 3 were productive and happy (i.e. trophies and glory). Then he left after 3 years.
Now turn your attention back to Van Persie, he is the same age, 29 (in August), he has almost nothing in his trophy/glory cabinet, this is the time to move if he wants to win something. The money is secondary but not irrelevant. It’s the chance to taste the joy of winning and to look back when you’re older on being part of a winning team.
Footnote: There is a warning for both AFC and Van Persie in Wenger’s classic last throw of the dice tactic – to eek out that last YEAR. He did it wit Henry and Fabregas, convincing both to give just one more year. Sadly that year proved to be largely worthless in any tangible way. In both cases the year onfield for the player was underwhelming, Arsenal didn’t do any better than ‘normal’ and the player lost a precious season where they could have achieved more at their new club.
Does signing M’Vila, and potentially Kagawa along with Podolski show intent to win trophies? Because that is one proven player, and two up-and-coming stars (if they all get signed) along with the players we have, surely that should make Robin sign at least a 1 or 2 year extension to show him we are serious about winning things. We should (with these potential acquisitions) surely have enough to win the FA Cup, which would be a good starting point
James I think you are wrong not everybody is money orientated and in RVP case I dont think he is hard up for a couple of pounds and certainly if he signs a new contract he wont be . Just remember he could go to thev euros and sustain a major injury which nobody in football wants. Just ask Muamba wether money is important or not.
DAG.
If City or United stump up 5 or 10 Million MORE than another club… guess what, Arsenal WILL MOST DEFINITELY SELL HIM to the HIGHEST BIDDER.
There are ZERO indications in recent Arsenal memory that we would EVER let the player walk away on a FREE, without ca$hing him in, AND… that we’d EVER take a lower amount of money.
Van Persie is SMART to weigh his options, and see if Arsenal can actually match HIS AMBITIONS to WIN A TROPHY before his career is over.
Why would you sign a long term deal at Arsenal, if the club has goals of … 3rd place?
Good blog waying up the situation well.
I personally think he will sign, and AW will get his wallet out for more players , I know every site is saying buy this or that player, yes we would all like a team of top players but unless you are a oil billionare this is not possible.
So all that I am asking for is 3/4 players who are good qualities not prima donnas , but the main ingredient is they want to play/fight(not literally) for the cause not the money. This way we will have a team all pulling in the same direction for the cause and who knows what we could achieve against all the big spenders.
6 years being injured and 2 years playing good is not fair to Arsenal, he should want to stay no matter what
@james, really?
so, he’s at his highest earning potential in a career that might last a few more years, or one bad injury away from ending, and you think he should just do what’s best for THE CLUB, not himself?
I think that if you had the chance to go to a different company, for more money & better benefits, you probably wouldn’t be too worried about the company you left.
He owes Arsenal FC … NOTHING!
absolutely NOTHING.
They’ll get PLENTY of MONEY when they sell him.
@stag133, He does owe Arsenal. This is his first full season in 8 years at the club. They could have shown him the door 3 years ago and who would have bought him.Its time he repaid the faith wenger and the club showed him.Its no good saying he love the club then leaving after one good season
@Don, Don.
You can’t be more wrong.
He OWES Arsenal NOTHING!!
He owes HIMSELF and HIS FAMILY… to make the MOST MONEY, and find the MOST HAPPINESS he can.
Yes, one healthy season. So if he gets hurt again, he’ll NEVER have the chance to make as much money as right now, OR… have the chance to play for a club that WANT TO WIN TROPHIES.
So, its up to ARSENE and ARSENAL FC, to prove to RVP, we mean business, we’ll pay him amongst the highest salaries in the EPL, AND, we will sign players so that Arsenal can compete on the pitch for TROPHIES.
If Arsenal doesn’t do that, HE SHOULD LEAVE.
He owes the club NOTHING.
@Don, As Stag said, how many of us have left jobs for more money or better benefits? In the end football is a job. As much as I want him to stay, he owes nothing. Besides, if you want to look at it that way, why is it ok for the club to sell players I doesn’t want, but not ok for a player to want to leave?
