5+10+31 equal an Arsenal victory

The malaise that was the beginning of the 2011/2012 is gone. Not quite a memory it is nearly completely faded in the background. A run that saw Arsenal go 2-1-4 is now replaced by a run of 7-1-4. 5 wins in a row and 10 out of the last 12 in all competitions. Doubters remain, but to many Arsenal are back.
No, its not the Arsenal that scared opponents like they did in glory of Wenger’s rule over the club. But it is an Arsenal that competes in every game and is more than likely to come out with a W than a L. At the beginning of this season and the end of last, you couldn’t say that.
For Arsenal, I don’t think this one was very much in doubt. For most of the match Norwich played one man on top. It of course paid dividends with the first goal as Morrison took Mertesacker to the cleaners. I have been effusive with my praise of Mertesacker as he settled into some of his games. Again, I don’t think you make 76+ caps for the German national team without being a good defender. But he had a howler of game yesterday. He was outmuscled and on a few occasions lost headers he should clearly be winning with his height. I am still not going to hang a player of his talent out to dry. Learning this league, especially for a defender can take time for a player. Yes, he was bad. But he is still a good player and hopefully he will come good.
Arsenal came out exactly as I said they would and for the first 15 minutes controlled every aspect of the game. If not for a combination of wastefulness on Arsenal’s part and luck on Norwich’s part it could’ve clearly been 3-0 inside 20 minutes. Norwich for their heart and desire did not have an answer for the three headed monster that Gervinho, Walcott and Robin Van Persie are turning in to. Walcott and Gervinho spent all day getting behind the Norwich defence. Walcott especially with some nice skill showing that he may have finally learned how to use his touch and guile to get behind players. That pace and skill nearly paid dividends immediately with only a Van Persie shot skitting wide and then 12 minutes Norwich were fortuitous.
Coming off a quick counter, Gervinho got the ball over to Walcott who had a rifle shot destined for the low corner only to be saved on the line by Russell Martin’s leg. It was fortuitous because an inch lower and the ball would’ve been an OG off the deflection. Martin would go on to be their best goal keeper with three such goal line saves.
Even though Norwich scored first you knew Arsenal had goals in them. They had been applying pressure all day and I am convinced that this “new” version of Arsenal is not as wasteful of chances as previous iterrations were. And on the 27th minute Robin Van Persie slotted home an easy goal to collect his 30th of the calendar year. Theo using his speed and touch to get around Tierney fed the ball into the middle nicely, Gervinho missed a back heel and it dropped to Van Persie who slotted it him. Maybe a bit of luck for Arsenal but good teams make their own luck and Van Persie’s skill in the box is just money right now.
Still as I mentioned in the preview to this match, Norwich were not going to lie down. They played us well trying to get back into the match. Unfortunately for them they either didn’t have enough attack going forward or their passing game went missing. This is the time of year when things get tough for the newly promoted clubs. Its the time of year when fixture congestion comes into play and it simply is more than the new clubs can handle (for the most part). Still I fancy Norwich to continue to give it a go and what good fans they had.
Still, Arsenal are on a march back to respectability and Wenger is out to show he hasn’t lost it. And on the hour it was once again Robin Van Persie who netted the winner. Coming off a sliding tackled from Ramsey to win the ball, Song scampered forward, he looked off Gervinho (more about that soon) and passed to the in-form Van Persie who took the ball into the box and lobbed the ball off a committed Ruddy. 2-1 Arsenal.
For the remaining 30 minutes it was a bag of missed Gervinho chances and some Norwich chances but as the game wound down Arsenal started doing something that we haven’t seen in a very long while. They kept the ball and closed out a match. If not for a foul in the closing 5 minutes Arsenal would’ve likely held the ball for the final 10 minutes ( okay I exaggerate a little but you get my point) it was impressive. We haven’t done that in recent memory. More so because a 2-1 win never felt like a win we could hold. And while the likes of Mertesacker are still giving us heartburn, I never got a sense of wreckless abandonment we got from previous Arsenal squads. Maybe its Vermaelen. Maybe its we have a goal keeper who doesn’t let in many last minute howlers. Maybe we’ve finally got some maturity on the squad. Maybe, just maybe, it’s all of that and more.
As for players of mention, it would be hard to pass on this match and not mention that it could’ve easily been a route had Gervinho been able to nail the chances we was given. I remarked yesterday that I though Gervinho was been stricken by Niklas Bendtner disease. But that is a discredit to the Ivory Coast international. He offers this club more than the Dane with the ego bigger than the Gervinho’s forehead. He has pace and skill on the ball and can beat players easily. While his first touch was circumspect early on he has settled that down and now just needs to sink his chances. Had he sunk the header or the open net chance he had in the 2nd half the 2-1 score wouldn’t have been as flattering to Norwich as it was.
I think Thomas Vermaelen bears some mention as well. He is clearly the best defender we have and places a calming influence on that line. While Mertesacker had a howler the defence never seemed scattered are all over the place. The only thing I can think that is helping that has to be the fact the Vermaelen is back in the lineup.
I mentioned yesterday that I thought Theo is finally starting to come good. It seems weird saying that for someone who has been at the club for a while but lest we forget he is only 22 and is only about to come into his prime as a player. His first touch and speed are starting to show how effective they can be when used by in a smart manner. He is skinning defenders on a regular basis and is a large part of the reason why Van Persie is scoring goals.
Than there is Van Perise. Enough has been printed and said about the Dutchman. He is simply the best player in the EPL right now and at least playing at a level similar to Messi and Ronaldo. He has 31 goals this calendar year putting him in the company of only Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry of players to do it. With 5 weeks in the season there is no reason to believe that he can’t eclipse the record of 36.
For Arsenal it is now 5 wins in a row. 10 out of the last 12. With matches against Fulham, Wigan and Everton on the docket for the next 3 weeks it isn’t unlikely that Arsenal can’t go into the December 18 match against City with third or fourth on the line. However, I would still caution against visions of grandeur – the road to respectability is paved with land mines.
Player Ratings:
Szczesny: 7 – not busy at all. Couldn’t do anything about goal.
Koscielny: 7 – proving his maturity and versatility deputising as the RB
Mertesacker: 4 – relatively quiet except for getting pushed off the ball that led to the goal
Vermaelen: 8 – solid performance
Santos: 7 – yeah it was Norwich but he was tested and actually did well defencively.
Song: 5 – Bad passing except for the assist that up the winning goal
Ramsey: 5 – largely nonexistent with errant passing all day
Arteta: 6 – Consistent throughout the day
Gervinho: 7 – Okay he didn’t score. But he had Tierney crapping his pants all day long with his speed.
Walcott: 9 – Was a threat all day long (MOTM)
Van Persie: 8 – If not for Walcott’s performance – easily could’ve been MOTM.

With the amount of goals Bolton has given up this season who really wants overpriced Cahill now>
@Sawl, I do. as I said previously, what is his motivation? He wanted to play for a contending team, in the CL if possible, and Bolton turned down the bids…
And, he’s one player, and there are 3 other defenders, a keeper, and a DM also responsible for defending… and Bolton are a poor defending team.
After watching Per Mertz flap and flounder around the pitch regularly, and seeing Cahill play well for years, I don’t really worry to much about Cahill having a bad half season for shite team… I know what he can do defensively.
Anybody see the video of Eboue getting abused/pelted during an Istanbul derby?…..Presumably he’s got a bunch of hands to shake after the match…..
OK, long one coming as I’m gonna assume this is the spot to discuss the team….And Eboue is as good a place to start as any…..
While we maybe could use a RB (like Eboue) at the moment I think we’re doing pretty damn well without him and criticism of the defense seems misplaced. PM4 will hopefully learn from his “Welcome to England” moment Sorry, but in Germany and the CL, the Norwich goal might’ve been a foul. Never in England, on the road, with Phil Dowd as ref, of course….Hell, we’re lucky Dowd didn’t give a Pen when Holt came in and did all his diving late on…..
But for the one big error Per did OK given that we were essentially playing 3 across the back. Confusion should have been expected as one 1st choice CB (LK6) was drafted into playing RB (where he did admirably, I thought) while the other (TV5) played a similar role on the left. Santos is hardly a defender and requires fulltime coverage which (excellent) Vermaelen provided. Maybe Santos covers for Thomas when he streams (menacingly) forward? Predictably the trouble came when they provided a ball over the top and Per had to try and cover the middle (solo) from the center circle to the box…..
But still, overall, I like it and I think the calls for Cahill (Jagielka being at least twice as good) are misplaced. It’s gonna be a struggle, full stop, playing without our other world class player (Bacary Sagna) until he returns and Djourou and Koscielny will have to share duties (unless Jenks is suddenly fit), I suspect, until he does.
IMO, the real worry is in central MF which is why I don’t mind Santos being the 4th in our (malleable) 3-4-3…. Arteta, Ramsey and Song are giving all they can and will need to stay healthy and (somehow) keep doing it. Arteta has talked about wanted to get further forward but his experience tells him that he mustn’t. How can he when the other two are prone to giveaways whenever pressure is applied? We’re asking too much of (limited) Song and (too young/can’t run) Ramsey and the days of 65-70% possession in these must win league matches has gone South (to Barcelona)….. We need Rosicky, Diaby and Wilshere to get healthy and slot in sooner than later. If we do any buying in January CM should be the spot….Once again I thank the two saints (dos Santos) that he seems able to do what Eboue couldn’t as a key contributor in this area….
Without tons of possession we must hope our front three can continue to strike fear into defenses and maybe do a hair (or forehead….) better with their (many) chances. It was worrisome when RVP fluffed his early ones and Theo had his left footer cleared. Still, after two goals and 90 plus mins, it was notable that RVP was continuing to make his (very weak) attempts at headers and still coming back into our half to take simple touches and try and pull the opposing CBs out of position–Very Captainish, IMO….. Theo and Gerv are learning how to use RVP’s (Captain AWOL’s?….) movements to their advantage and are about as quick as any pair of wingers in the game. They WILL convert more of their chances and provide assists. The problem is that we have NOBODY who can spell them. Arshavin couldn’t get a sniff, and frankly, I was not at all eager to see him giving the ball away and then standing with a smirk, which is what his game has become….. Benayoun is a useful runner (and did well on Saturday) but he’s really another CM. Park and/or Chamakh need to be given chances (and take them) sooner rather than later. Bendtner, if his ego will allow it, might be an option come January (though I still favor Vela)…..
Now we’ve got Dortmund, who need a win, coming in the CL. Having just gotten an away victory over the hottest team on the planet (Man City conquerers, Bayern….) they will be eager for more. Will AW rotate players or put out his best 11 hoping that Fulham (also at home) will be the easier game? Unfortunately I think he needs to make changes, but I fear bringing in the likes of Arshavin (for Gervinho?) or Chamakh (for RVP) changes the style of the squad too much. Rosicky or Benayoun (for Ramsey) and Djourou spelling Koscielny (or maybe Mertesacker) might be OK. We must keep making 3 points a match in the league while we can still win our CL group in Athens…..As much as I’m buoyed by recent results I think the squad is (very) delicate. It will take some good management and a bit of fortune to keep things ticking up……
@HighburyTerraceSteve, Eboue is a CLOWN. They pelted him because he’s a DIVER…
Per Mertz is not a good defender, and that wasn’t a foul ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. It was bad defending, as usual.
Rosicky? You are not really calling for him to play? really?
he offers NOTHING. Hasn’t since he got here. He has been a total waste of time and money… (and I was ecstatic we got him at the time)…
We need a PROVEN CB, a DM, and a creative midfielder as well…
RVP – Gervinho and Theo have been very good together… I wouldn’t break that trio up now at all… let them do their thing…
definitely a delicate squad and line we walk… but at least we are in with a shout at the moment…
What Will January Bring?
That’s the question.
More BS from Wenger and the Board (likely), or ACTION, in which we get a few talented players that can continue to transform this team back into a contender.
@stag133, Clearly you’re prepared to find something with which to flog the management in January even if we win every match between here and there….On the plus side, you’re interested enough to watch….
PM4 is our 3rd choice CB and seems an improvement over Djourou and Squillaci, the latter, “a “proven” defender many were ecstatic that we signed…. Would you sit Koscielny or Vermaelen, after bringing in Cahill?…..
Rosicky has captained the Czechs into the Euros and I think he has provided a few good stints when Ramsey has been ineffective and needed a rest. With two matches a week we can’t just play the same 6 forwards and midfielders over and over, unless, of course, you say we must….
With two of our best players coming back (fingers crossed) in January (Wilshere and Sagna) it is unlikely we go crazy in the (typically more expensive Winter) window. A serious central midfield prospect like Gotze, M’Vila or Martin (and I like Granero, still only 24…..) would be a great long-term investment. Hopefully our results continue solid enough and injuries do not necessitate another round of desperation buys while other squad members step up and show their worth alongside the ones already doing so. It is a DREAM to think that we’re suddenly going to start plunking down big money on the likes of players like Torres, Meireles, Carroll, Henderson or Downing (approx 140 million pounds, for those “names”…. at least the latter two played more than 10 mins in their substitute appearances yesterday…..) Yet somehow, as our low rent players get to know each other we find ourselves even on points with those two teams (despite our horror start)…..
Still, of course, SPENDING IS THE ONLY SOLUTION and the MANAGER (not the board nor the owner) WILL NEVER SPEND ENOUGH….so THERE’S PLENTY TO HATE….so, hate on, I guess…..
@HighburyTerraceSteve WHY NOT IMPROVE THE SQUAD?!
Do you really think we are all set for the rest of the season with the current team?
If RVP goes down, then what?
Yes, I am not letting management or the manager off the hook for the WORST Summer ever! it was horrendous, and sorry, but Arteta and Benayoun, doesn’t make up for Nasri and Cesc going.
Still work to be done.
As far as Per Mertz… I’d say if he was our 4th defender, that’d be fine… Koscienly is OK, he isn’t great, he isn’t even very good. He’d be a nice 3rd CB, so if we got Cahill or Jagielka… it would be Vermaelen and Cahill, in my team. There is enough games to get Per and Koscielny in there for sure.
Rosicky has been SHITE. Let’s call it like it is. I don’t give a damn what he’s done internationally (or Mertz for that matter)… he has been a HUGE dissapointment at Arsenal FC.
So, while I am happy we are playing with pride and passion, and have had a very good run of matches, I’m not placated … I understand that we more than we have…. we need actual TALENT on the level of a Nasri or Cesc…
Never spend enough?
How about we spend what we MAKE FROM SELLING?
Would that be OK?
obviously, reason to be optimistic and enthusiastic about our recent play…
Not going to belittle the resurgence at all…
Even with Gervinho being HORRIBLE yesterday, missing chance after chance after chance, we found a way to win. That’s a bit positive. But its all down to the level of RVP’s game at the moment. Theo was good, and he CAN cross the ball, and he can play at this level, but…. RVP is literally carrying this team, and dragging it along with him.
On the bad side, as usual, the defense.
You can wish Mertsacker into a good defender all you want, but he’s not that good. Hasn’t shown anything since he’s been here. He’s slow, he’s not strong, and for someone his height, doesn’t head the ball exceptionally well.
The play of the LB and RB … and the amount of room they have given, whomever is playing there… since Sagna went down, has been ridiculous. Wide gaping areas of land to run on for opposing teams.
If that continues, we won’t win shite against any decent team.
How is the defense going to get better, if a proper CB isn’t brought in…. January?
I know Wenger is pissed at Bolton for not accepting our bid for Cahill…. heaven forbid someone reject Arsene’s wants…
so now, he’s going back to 5th grade, and not making a big enough bid to get the player. If he wanted him before, why not go get him in January… ? because Wenger is stubborn, so we’ll try someone else who doesn’t have EPL experience… for less money… and roll the dice yet again at the back.
But whatever.
I’ll take us being a competitive team that gives a good effort every week… there’s a bid of pride back in the squad, and that’s a welcome addition.
