Match Preview: Arsenal v Fulham: EPL Match Day 12

Here’s a question post Dortmund – has Arsenal finally learned how to win a game through utilitarian work rate rather than always trying to pass it into the net at every chance? Well, we get another chance to find out as the Gunners face off against Fulham in a bid to win their 6th straight Premier League tie.
Fulham come into the Emirates sitting 2 points above the relegation zone. They haven’t beat a London opponent since 2003 and they come to a place, the Emirates they have yet to win at all. In fact in the last 25 away attempts against Arsenal for Fulham they have lost 22 times and drawn 3. Still, I would be a liar if I said those kind of stats didn’t worry me slightly, if only for the reason, something has to give.
Of course a win by Fulham would probably go down on the shock level of the Blackburn loss earlier this season. Especially given the current form Arsenal find themselves in.
After a start to a season that saw players leave and new players come in, red cards galore, a ton of goals and mass confusion, Arsenal have made watching the Gunners fun again. Where this team will end up is anyone’s guess but for right now everything for Arsenal is clicking right.
For the players it seems this is the squad they knew they had all along. Fans on the other hand had their doubts. I am one of them.
“We started very badly and it is not easy when you have new players coming in,” he said. “You need to give them time and we see that we are not like three or four months ago. We have very good cohesion. I think that is very important.
“When we started we lost two big players and it was not easy to have players like Cesc [Fabregas] and [Samir] Nasri missing. They were very important but in football it happens all the time. You need to forget about it and give confidence to the players you have got.”
So said Alex Song, Arsenal’s current “it” player. And he is right. As the team has settled every week they seem to be playing with more and more confidence. I personally see that in the form of how we play when we have leads. Now I don’t know about you but at 2-1 or 1-0 I still bite my nails. Past experiences are hard to let go of. But watch this team play with a lead and while there are moments – a minute or two of sustained pressure here or there – there isn’t the wide spread panic that has come from Arsenal teams in the past.
The team seems resolute and confident. They are collected and they working as a complete unit. Everyone is defending and working to get the ball and start the counter. You only need to see how far back Gervinho and Walcott get to defend to know that the defence is a team wide thing. I don’t know if we’ve shucked the panic completely and certainly mistakes by Mertesacker against Norwich and Djourou against Dortmund make you scratch your head. Still, you’ve got your head in the sand if ignore the fact that the team certainly has significantly improved in all areas on the pitch.
Of course though everyone will continue to write and talk about Robin Van Persie. He is as I have said before the best forward in Europe save for either Ronaldo and Messi. According to the BBC Van Persie has been more prolific than even Messi. Van Persie has 44 goals in 50 games for club and country this calendar year at an average of 0.88 goals a game. Only Ronaldo is better with 53 in 55 games.
In the 38 he has scored for Arsenal in all competitions, he has become a virtual fox in the box. 33 of his goals have come from inside the box, 1 from outside the box, 2 from penalty kicks and 2 from free kicks. And those 33 it doesn’t matter how or where or from what angle. The ball finds him and he finds the back of the net.
People like to see this as an over dependence on one player. I tried to explain in the follow-up to the Dortmund win that I would see the point if he was doing the creation as well as the scoring but its not about that. Its not like City was with Tevez. Tevez would win the ball back and scamper forward using his footwork to open up defences and scores. Van Persie is getting service from the likes of Gervinho and Walcott. Of Walcott’s 8 assists in 2011 all of them have gone to Van Persie. The two of them have developed a very keen understanding of how to play together. And both are healthy and having banner years. Throw in new boy Gervinho and the attack with Van Persie is as close to being one of the best units in Europe. They are playing at a different level and they are that good.
Sure, I think like everyone else that it would be nice to have more scorers on the score sheet. But right now I am not going to worry about it unless Van Persie suddenly dries up or gets injured. Right now if Van Persie is in the box there is a better than even chance he is going to put Arsenal in a position to win a match. I agree with the boss on this and feel that the Captaincy that seemed to be a burden to Fabregas has put another level into Van Persie’s play.
While I am sure there will be valleys again I am going to enjoy this.
How the Match Should Play Out:
At home Arsenal have been absolutely solid. They will come into play confident and I feel looking not be playing catch up like last week against Norwich. Fulham are in need of a pick me up and I just don’t see them playing defencively – they do have to get further away from the relegation zone after all. Look for them to try and stop the attack of Arsenal and hit the Gunners on the counter. The biggest problem for Fulham will be not conceding goals late in the game. As Arsenal always look a bet to score right now this could be key should Fulham be drawn equal to the Gunners late in the match. Still, it’s at home, the Gunners have dispatched better teams and I think they take this one handedly.
Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Theo Walcott. All the praise rightly goes to Robin Van Persie for his scoring prowess but Theo Walcott has been displaying a lot of the skills we had hoped to see earlier. If he improves his final ball – watch out.
Fulham. Bobby Zamora. Simply put the Fulham player who will try and test our CB the most. Zamora is a solid all around player and would probably get more recognition were he playing on a bigger team.
Probable Starting XI:
Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal: Wilshere (ankle) Sagna (ankle) Gibbs (hernia) Jenkinson (back fracture)

Good post…
I saw this really great post today……
Wenger saying RVP is primed for INJURY if he doesn’t get a rest.
I will agree. He can’t play every single match, and 2 a week at times.
So.
Sign Thierry Henry on loan!
;)
Disappointed but not surprised by yesterday’s result, and glad that TV5 was able to redeem himself and get us a point. It was always going to be difficult against a rested, experienced Fulham side, and, as others have pointed out, we had some chances that were well saved by Schwarzer or a well placed defender.
I’ve been arguing for several years now that Arshavin’s best play is (well) behind him. I actually thought he played about as well as he could yesterday (or at least to his current potential). The squad as it’s now formulated, however, needs the movement of 3 mobile forwards. Without it we simply do not click.
This team, unlike previous ones, is not about midfield possession. Instead it’s about moving the ball quickly from back to front with a dynamic center forward pulling defenses out of shape. Often that player (RVP, normally) is the recipient of final balls (and scoring chances) but the wingers need to be in motion and anticipating openings which the “false 9” creates. AA23 plays with his head down, and, lacking fitness and/or the desire to adapt to our approach, he is rarely in promising positions. And his standing, high risk passing, while it might fit “the plan” when it works, leads to breaks the other way when it doesn’t….
Some would argue that Andrey could be more effective tucked in behind a traditional #9 and it’s probably true. Still, to shift our entire approach to accommodate a player out of form (and fitness) seems somewhat absurd. Maybe we’ll see him in his favored role on Tuesday in the CC. Ideally he can score a goal (or 4) in that match or sometime between here and Jan. 1 when we might offload him to the nearest (or furthest) Russian oligarch, who hopefully has more rubles than sense…..
Obviously the subs helped, with at least the final one (Makh for Arsh) being addition by subtraction. Diaby, I think, can do a job filling in or sharing time with Ramsey and might’ve finished the glorious chance (created by Theo) which Aaron hit over, and Gervinho (obviously) gives us the pace and movement that Andrey can only remember wistfully over multiple glasses of Stolichnaya. Yossi Benayoun as a winger is sub-optimal (he too prefers a traditional #10 role), but at least he runs and runs. He should’ve started yesterday’s match. We’ll need a replacement for Gerv when he goes off to the ACN. Yossi is the obvious internal solution but I wouldn’t mind seeing Gibbs and Santos playing together over on that side. I hate to say it but I think either might do better in the role Andrey had yesterday….
Our horror summer has put too much pressure on the team and working players into the squad, while absolutely essential, is made far more difficult by the need for results in every match. Playing our record signing (Arshavin) was the “safe” or “hopeful” choice. Yesterday it was the wrong one, and, I would argue, it cost us two points….
@HighburyTerraceSteve,
Id have to say what cost us two points was tiredness, lack of rotation, inability to take chances, and fantastic keeping/defending. But I agree, Andrey needs to shape up and score, or go as Gervinho/Walcott/RVP is one of the most lethal front 3s in the league atm
Wasnt a great performance, but we had the chances to win this game 2 or 3 nil, we got unlucky with the OG but Vermaelen made up for his mistake which was good to see. I think a Champions League Hangover was one of the reasons we didnt play too well, which means most of our players will get a rest ahead of next weeks game with Wigan. Hopefully Liverpool will lose so we stay 6th, and then we can keep climbing the table and hope Spurs have a mini-meltdown that they are due.
Oh and Aaron Ramsey wants to get double figures this season, he won’t if he keeps spooning them over the bar from 8 yards out
Fair play to Fulham, they came and didnt let us play and we found it difficult, but Vermaelen atoned for his mistake and we shoulda had more were it for Woeful finishing and some Great saves. Ramsey didnt perform well that game, nor did Arshavin and Gervinho was good when he came on
oh well.
we got a point.
entertaining match.
3 points would have been nice, but we didn’t have that finishing edge today.
in control in the 1st Half…
but can’t put away the opportunities…. hopefully RVP still has a magic moment left in him, or someone else will rise to the occasion…
Theo is actually becoming a good crosser of the ball…
and though Arshavin hasn’t shown much so far, I am glad Gervinho has been shown the bench. He has been awful in the last few matches, spurning easy chances, and having no idea what to do after he rounds the keeper??!!
Thierry? Wanna play the 2nd half?
this fulham tie will be tricky. they play good football and are a much better team than their record suggests. fulham had back to back games against man city and chelsea respectively and were very unlucky not to get results in both ties. they have numerous players that can hurt arsenal in attack. this will be a good challenge for the team.
regardless of what you may think about alex song, he has been brilliant for arsenal this season. he’s become undroppable. speaking of fulham games, i remember a fulham game about five years ago where song absolutely stunk up the place. i also remember a song that wasn’t consistent enough to keep denilson out of the side. this isn’t that alex song. while he may not be the best midfield player in the world, neither were edu and ray parlour. i’ve been plenty happy with his contribution to the team this season. may his progression continue.
robin has been truly brilliant. i remember this time last year, many were calling for him to be sold. i’ve always insisted that robin was an exceptional talent and despite his injuries, you make exceptions for exceptional players. can you imagine if we had sold him to chelsea or real madrid (who both made bids) and he remained fit and in his current form for them? arsenal would look like the biggest fools. i’ve also insisted that he was not injury prone but rather had bad luck with injuries. no injury-prone player could play as much football as robin has this calendar year and remain fit for the duration. ljunberg, hargraves, and diaby have never played this much football. here’s to hoping he doesn’t suffer another cynical challenge that puts him out again.
@joshuad, LOL.
Alex Song has never been “brilliant”… we tend to see what we want to see…
you like the player…
its why our “kids” are always fantastic… and then the rarely pan out…
Alex Song couldn’t get a place in any of the top teams in the league.
watching MEMORABLE GOALS of THE FA CUP – Arsenal.
melacholy.
we’ve had some amazing teams, and Highbury was just a wonderful place for football…
The list of players we had, and the level they were at is just amazing…
hoping we get a few of that level soon…
and what also struck me, is the camaraderie the players had… I don’t see the same thing now… though I suppose that’s football now.
Kanuuuuuuuuuu.
Glad I waited until the passing of the 2nd of the great American eating holidays. (Halloween, with the candy and all, being the 1st….) Happy Black Friday to everybody….
Fulham is a very experienced team and, esp., if they can get an early goal they can be very, very stingy. If Duff cannot play it’s a bit of a break (for us), but I still predict that they will be difficult to break down. I’m not completely sure that we won’t rotate. Does Gervinho really need a full house at the Emirates watching him one on one with (our would be #1) Mark Schwarzer? Perhaps this is the spot for Arshavin to show us what, if anything, he can offer…..We’ll have to make it through January without Gervinho so, if we’re not planning to ship Andrey to Dagestan, (or recall Bendtner or Vela) we sort of need him (or Yossi) to slot in and be productive sooner than later….
It’s a great test for the squad which is as settled as it’s ever been. The faux-injuries to Arteta and RVP near the end of the Dortmund match were both the mark of “experience” (time-wasting) and (quite) worrisome and it was good to see them combine, via the head of (very impressive) Vermaelen, for the 2nd goal. Also very good to see Thomas hopping mad as we conceded the stupid late goal. Between him and the (absurd?) confidence of young Sneezy I feel like we (finally) have some strong leadership marshaling our bigger (9 instead of 8….) and better (Santos, for example, IS an improvement on Eboue, who would also have been gone in January….) group of defenders. While it would be great to just hoover up other good ones Man City style (let’s buy Samba, Jagielka AND Cahill in January for a cool 60 million…..) it’s not the way a serious team is actually built.
I’m not going to go beyond the defense (American spelling) this morning…..It should be noted in 7 CL matches (the group and the two qualifiers with Udinese, currently 1 point off the Scudetto….) that we conceded 3 goals total. Compare that with whomever you like and it’s NOT THAT BAD. (Please pardon the shouting)…..
Happy shopping…..
