One step forward, two steps back, the dichotomy of a weekend with Arsenal

Well, I certainly didn’t see this coming. Not utter capitulation on this scale. But when you look at the seocnd half of yesterday’s match that is what happened. We absolutely folded under a lesser team. And because we lost the gains we made on Saturday were quickly eradicated. One step forward two steps back is unfortunately becoming the Arsenal way in my opinion.

Before I go on any further though, I want to address what everyone else is addressing, the performance of one Lee Probert. And in this brief moment I will absolutely defend Wenger’s frustration over the calls that were levied in the game. Probert was out right SHIT. Let’s assume the second yellow on Djourou was warranted. Wouldn’t be the first time one of our lads was stupid enough to get themselves a second yellow and thus get sent off. But if Djourou knocking over, pulling down or whatever he did to Bobby Zamora was a foul, then Phllipe Seneros’ tug of Van Persie in the box was a stone cold penalty. They were nearly identical in purpose. The only difference I guess is that Bobby Zamora and Fulham were better at getting Probert to make the call.

The problem I have and it was evident in these two calls was consistency of calls.  You simply can’t call the same essentially the same foul two different ways. If you are going to call it one way you have to call it the other. It’s quite simple really. Except Probert who is known to “let ’em play” got it entirely wrong. Forget the Gervinho non-call. It was a penalty but let’s be honest Gerv embellished the fall and it calls into question whether it was seen or not as a foul. There were other issues, tugging of shirts, pushes from behind things that weren’t called that a more seasoned, less naive ref would’ve called (yes I used naive like Wenger did).

But let me now be clear, Lee Probert’s influence was not the only reason why we failed to secure points from this match.

No, that honor belongs to the boys who took the pitch in the second half. To say they were shit would be an understatement. They were worse than that. They absolutely positively looked overwhelmed. They couldn’t get out of their own way or their own end for that matter. Whether it was a win or draw for Fulham you just knew that the home team would score the way that second half developed.

People are begging for another striker, that we are devoid of other scorers. I get it but it’s not the case. The players we have are showing themselves to be able to get the chances. Hell, our chances per game are steadily up. What’s not happening is burying those chances. Whether it’s Gervinho’s wiffs, Walcott’s crappy attempts, or Ramsey’s Row Z attempts we simply are shooting for the sake of shooting. And while that is an improvement over past years, making the keeper work and taking quality shots is necessary. This match should’ve been put to bed in the first half. Hell, all three matches we played over the holidays should’ve been over before the second half ever started but no. We just couldn’t finish.

What we need is someone up front who like Van Persie who goes into each situation with the ball knowing he is going to score. He doesn’t always but he goes at with that mentality. Sure, Henry coming back will bring someone with a similar mentality but that is a short term solution. I also believe that in time Gervinho will come good. The big question is Theo Walcott.

Was it me or did that lad look like had inherited Arshavin’s “i can’t be arsed” attitude. His runs down the side where half-spirited. Every cross was either low into the defenders or too far for anyone to matter. At one point in the game it looked like his teammates wanted nothing to do with him. Now, there was a rumour that Walcott’s contract sessions had stalled and he was looking for £85k  week. Whether this is true or not it was that kind of disharmony in the locker room that caused us issues last season with Samir and Cesc.

The bigger problem with the team besides the lack of a striker is that we have no real fullbacks and it is why I surmise both Theo and Gervinho have struggled lately. Both were on fire with the likes of Sagna, Jenkinson, and Santos playing. Now without any proper fullbacks they are not getting the support they need. It’s no fauly of the fill ins mind you. Their natural tendancy is to stay back and defender. Not maurauder forward. Djourou looks almost comical when he finally decides to take the ball into the middle of the pitch. Its not their natural tendancy to do. The reason Coquelin looks better at LB than Vermaelen is as a midfielder going forward is part of his game he is comfortable on the ball that way.

We simply must make getting at least one full back be it on loan or through transfer our priority and it must happen before the Swansea game.  Until we get proper fullbacks playing we will not have the support that our wingers need. Until then I expect more comments from me and others talking about Theo’s shit games. Before he lost support I was talking about how much Theo had come along in his development.

Until then we will likely be sitting on a lot more 1-0 matches. Which means many more opportunities for teams to get something against us.  Which is worrisome. I still believe that top 4 even third is a possibility. Chelsea are shit and even buying may not cure them of their ills. United finally look pedestrian and Liverpool are going to struggle to secure points at home. And Spurs finally look to be slowing down. Basically what it means is that its all up for grabs

Finally I noticed some criticisms of the subs. At first blush I get why Wenger made those moves. Benayoun and Rosicky are more defensive minded than Theo and Gerv. We weren’t getting many opportunities in the second half. The best thing he could do is batten down the hatches and work something on the counter.  But the real story is how devoid of real quality are bench is. Right now, I would only rate Benayoun as our only impact sub.

I just probably upset the “Ox must play now” brigade. But as good as Alex Oxlade Chamberlain is going to be – he is not there yet. The biggest issue I see with Ox is that he gives the ball away too many teams in our own end. It something that is going to take time to develop. Yes, he needs more chances but better he build that up in the reserves than do it on the pitch and cost us in a game. He is going to come good. It is just going to take time. The last thing we want with Ox is to turn him into the next Theo Walcott.

The big question is this – do Wenger and the board now feel that a top four spot is in jeopardy? If they do like they did in 09 when they brought in Arshavin, they will make moves. A LB will likely come in on loan. Whether or not a forward comes in is still up in the air. The Lukas Podolski saga is picking up speed as one day he wants to come and the next he doesn’t. Which only means it will likely last until 31 January.  Which only means we’ll be biting our nails, saying our prayers and doing whatever vodoo magic we can until we have a back up to Robin Van Persie.

Until then at least we have 5 or so days until the return of the King.

Stay Goonerish people!!!

    January 5th.
    Window open 5 days.
    Arsenal has done feck all.
Haven’t even officially signed Thierry Henry.

Still do NOT have a legitimate Full Back on loan or otherwise.
I do NOT agree that we should just bring up a reserve FB, and slot him in… we’re the fecking ARSENAL FC… not a mickey mouse club.

Getting more and more worried every passing day that once again, we will be doing NOTHING to improve this team in the window.
    WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR?
You can PLAN to make moves for MONTHS in advance.

@stag133, understand, i’m not suggesting we should not bring in a loanee at fullback. rather that if we can not find one good enough for arsenal, we should consider playing a young player. like you said, it’s not a video game where you can just plug in a player. that applies to loanees as well, especially in january. good ones are hard to find this time of the year.

besides, there’s no guarantee that a loanee would be better than one of our talented young guys. if push comes to shove, it might not be a bad idea to give nico yennaris, gavin hoyte, or another a look (if they’re playing well). when sylvinho got injured and cashley got his first look, he never looked back and sylvinho had to find a new job. when cashley got hurt in the unbeaten season, clichy stepped in for almost three months and we didn’t miss a beat. when our first two keepers got hurt last season, our third string keeper stepped in and hasn’t looked back either. i don’t consider cole, clichy, or szczesny’s contributions to the first team mickey mouse. like i said, if push comes to shove, one young player in a wide position might be a legitimate option.

sorry dag, but theo’s problems were not down to who was on the pitch with him. theo’s technical play has absolutely sucked. technical being how you trap, pass, dribble, shoot etc. those are personal skills that have absolutely nothing to do with who’s on the pitch with you. you can either shoot or you can’t. you can either pass or you can’t. if your touch is off, be a pro and stay after practice to do some extra ball work. one extra session might be all that’s required for theo to get his game back on track.

walcott seems to be resting on the laurels that earned him praise from van persie earlier in the season. if chamberlain has a good game against leeds, wenger should have him on the bench against swansea. if theo sucks in the first half, drop him at halftime for chamberlain. if chamberlain has a good game, the crowd will tell the truth. anyone remember the movie gladiator. spaniard! spaniard! spaniard! anyone watch the denver bronco games from earlier in the season. tebow! tebow! tebow! the crowd will tell you who their champion is. it’s walcott’s to lose.

as for a fullback, finding one available and good enough to play for arsenal in the middle of the season will be hard to do. i would like to see wenger give one of the reserves the nod. first, it’s their natural position. second, if the senior guys support the young guy, he will relax and play his natural game. anyone remember ashley cole when he first game into the team? anyone remember clichy in the unbeaten season? one young player at fullback won’t undermine the team. besides, if the youngster wants to make it at arsenal, this is the kind of chance they’ll relish.

as for wenger’s substitutions against fulham, i agree with everyone else; even declared we relented the initiative in the gdc as it was happening. as for some of the defending we’ve seen, that’s down to coaching. even a fifth grader knows better than to play the ball in front of his own goal. that’s exactly what we’ve been doing since the olympiacos defeat. our fullbacks have been playing balls across the goal instead of clearing them down the line or wide of the goal mouth. djourou, coquelin, vermaelen. even squillaci yesterday had a chance to clear the ball but instead headed the ball back across goal directly to zamora for the game winner. i blame the players for doing something that they should know better but blame the coaching more because it continues to happen. clearly, no one has said anything.

@joshuad., as for the defenders, you can’t say “oh, they’re not reall fullbacks”. we all knew since we were nine years old not to play with the ball in front of your own goal; regardless of what position we play.

    • stag133 5 January, 2012 at 13:35 Log in to Reply

      @joshuad., Josh.
Surely we can find a short term loan of an actual FULLBACK.
It’s not a video game where you can plug in anyone, a reserve player, etc…
Even Wenger said it would be “SILLY” to drop points because we
don’t have real FullBack playing the position…
(and then we did just that, with Djourou against Fulham)

Wenger’s rotation decisions leave me worried, surely an injury prone striker should not be played twice in 48 hours, however good he may be. Wenger seems to be scared to play apart from RVP, and i agree with Stag he looked exhausted in the 2nd half. Surely Park could’ve played and RVP could’ve been on the bench? 3 million pounds and not a SINGLE minute of Premier league football, whats the point in buying him?

But that aside, Wenger should’ve left someone quick up top, stop Fulham hemming us into our own half. The way I see it, Theo or Gervinho could be loitering around the half way line, ready to hurt Fulham on the counter if they pushed too far forward. It might have relieved pressure on our defence, the Arsenal in that second half were the team at the back end of last season, and Wenger needs to face up to the facts and although Probert had a horrible game, should stop blaming the Ref when we lose

Everytime we get a sniff of going into the top 4, we blow it, its so frustrating, but those capitalists like Gazidis, Kroenke and Hill-Wood will like the way the profits come rolling in with little-to-no expenditure.

We need a LB, permenant as Gibbs CANNOT be relied on, someone like Taiwo who is available. This would allow Vermaelen to move inside to CB, and Koz to move to RB, who is so much more defensively sound than Djorou. (That sending off should prove to Wenger that he is a complete liability)

We also need a proper Striker, one who can provide proper back-up to RVP, seeing as the manager refuses to play Park, hell even Chamakh would’ve injected some freshness yesterday. Someone like Podolski/Pato/Huntelaar, is a must

2 transfers, its not that much eh Arsene?

  4. stag133 3 January, 2012 at 17:55 Log in to Reply

while Theo was not good yesterday, if you are going to question his effort, then you simply can’t fail to mention RVP’s effort (or lack there of) in the 2nd half…
he was WALKING AROUND for much of the 2nd half.

Wenger usually takes off all our options late in a one goal game, and packs it in, and it almost NEVER works. It makes it impossible for us to get any pressure going forward and releasing pressure on the defense. He gets it wrong regularly, IMHO.

We DO need a striker. We DO need an “actual” Full Back on loan or whatever, and we DO need an offensive midfield option with Gervinho going to ACoN… Theo Gervinho and RVP up front have gelled… but you are right, if they wings aren’t getting support from the FBs… then our machine will slow down to a grind.
