The euphoria of the FA Cup win is over. It’s been  some time since our last league match but at least to me the reality of the loss is still there. And it doesn’t get any easier this week with our away trip to Swansea.

Swansea have been a major revelation this season. They have been absolutely top drawer at home and have 6 clean sheets to their record. Only United have come into their home and walked away with a positive result.  In fact they have only conceded 4 goals at home. Like Arsenal they like to play a possession game and as one paper put it – it could be the largest game of 11v11 keep away you’ve seen.

The real problem Swansea will present to Arsenal is down the flanks. We are still without a proper fullbacks and they’ve got speed on the wings. They don’t play a narrow game and it is going to test whomever is deputizing in those spots this week. With our injury crisis at defence this could become a real problem in this match.

Swansea aren’t a scoring juggernaut but they do average just over one goal per game at home. So the likelihood of scoring a goal is a possibility. The problem for us will be scoring ourselves. We haven’t exactly been prolific of late. The real issue here is the lack of real fullbacks (there it is again). Our deputy FBs are all either CBs or midfielders and while we are better with midfielders in the role, Wenger prefers his defenders to fill in that role. This is where the problem lies. With Sagna, Jenkinson, Santos and Gibbs we have fullbacks who are also part of the offensive threat of this team.  They play are keys to our offensive buildup. This just isn’t happening as it should with the likes of Vermaelen, Djourou, or Miquel. Sure they CAN get forward but more than often they won’rt. And its hard to blame them. Its very hard for them to get past their CB mentality. And let’s be fair, they aren’t exactly the best crossers. Additionally, they very seldom bring the ball into the middle of the pitch as Sagna and Santos are often to do. In the end it all leaves us very predictable.

When we last faced Swansea we were a team in turmoil. It was the first game with all of our new signings. Arteta and Mertesacker taking the pitch for the first time.  The fans were crying for somebody – anybody’s head. And if it was not for a gift from surprise star keeper Vorm, Arsenal could’ve very well had another draw early on in the season.  But Vorm made his error and Arshavin (remember him) actually was there to put the chance away. Hopefully Andrei has a performance that reminds us why we got him the first place.

The good news for Arsenal in this match thought, they won’t be presented with a team that is going to sit back and park the bus. Swansea will come to play and the more open the pitch the more likely it is that we will get our chances. More importantly Robin Van Persie will get his chances, which can only be a good thing. The real important thing is finishing those chances. In Arsenal’s recent league run we’ve had ample enough chances. We’re in double digits often. The problem lies in everyone else’s finishing.

And that’s where Thierry Henry comes in. After his heroics on Monday people are hoping that our greatest player ever can be much more of a force than a lot of us were expecting. But I think the real value of Henry is his presence around the likes of Theo Walcott. Walcott for the most part hasn’t had an awful season. But it has been his usual stop and start self.  If he could learn how to have an effective final ball, his game wouldn’t be so one dimensional. My hope is that this presence Henry brings to the team rubs off on Theo and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and they use it for what its worth – a major learning experience.

I don’t expect Henry to be our savior. To do that would be wrong and frankly looking at the team with blinders on. Arsenal still need a fullback, a striker and after what I saw against Fulham and Leeds a creative midfielder. The first two are well known. The last one is likely to be offset by the return of Jack Wilshere to some extent but we still don’t have that player whom when a pass is needed to unlock a stingy defence can do it.  Arteta has been great for us but even he doesn’t seem to be capable of that wonder pass that sets a forward in on goal. Songaldinho has been available for some very nice, Cesc-like passes but the last I checked his duties fall more to the defencive side of things than offencive. Ramsey may very well get there but he isn’t there yet. And as I mentioned Wilshere is due back in a few weeks but it would wrong to expect him to pick right where he left of last season. We need another option.

How the match should play out:

This is either going to be a match we all enjoy or one we all wind up screaming about. There will be loads of pass and move football and one team trying out possess the other. Swansea will test Arsenal’s resolve with their rather tricky wingers.  Arsenal will look to set Robin Van Persie loose within the 18 yard box.  Swansea aren’t going to run a score up on you so it is likely they will get at least one goal. Arsenal’s current form suggests just 1 goal in the game. I’d like to be wrong. But unless someone steps up and is an option to scoring other than Van Persie I am not sure a second goal is there.

Players to watch:

Arsenal: Andrei Arshavin.  With Gervinho gone the Russian should get a run of games. Its a chance to either find form and show us why we liked him once. or its a chance for Arsenal to finally decide that he needs to go back to Russia.

SCFC: Michael Vorm.  There haven’t been many keepers better than Vorm this season. he is particularly good at stopping PKs and looks better than the best supposed best keeper in the league, Joe Hart.

The Final Word

There is a lot of speculation regarding reported transfers and with the need for a left back and a n additional forward two stories were the mainstay of the news this week. First was that Arsenal were in line for either a loan or deal for Lyon fullback Aly Cissokho. The reports are varied as to who wanted what but I do believe that Cissokho is the player Wenger wants. He was looked at this summer before we landed on Andre Santos. Why some people question whether or not a deal would make sense is he is 24. Should Wenger sign him on a permanent transfer rather than a loan it would represent the surest sign that the manager no longer has faith in Kieran Gibbs.

Well, if that is true than Arsene can join many of us fans, myself included who feel its time to move on the young fullback. The lad surely has a lot of promise but he also has ankles and feet made of glass. He is good for 1 match then 3 weeks out. Yes, its an overexaggeration but you get the picture. Its almost as if he sees the pitch and gets hurt. Andre Santos should be our first choice LB when he is healthy. But he should also have an heir apparent and not one whom we can’t trust to be healthy. At 24 Aly Cissokho could be that heir.

In truth though, I am no longer of the opinion that a LB deal is going to happen. Sagna, Vermaelen & possibly Gibbs are reportedly due back to the squad before the United match. I personally think Wenger has been biding time hoping that he can last until these players return to the club. Its all a bit misguided if you ask me but it is how it looks like things are developing at this point.

As for a forward there were reports from respected journalist Javier Perez that Arsenal and Anderlecht had agreed to deal for Matias Suarez. Both Anderlecht and Arsenal have refuted this. While it may be likely that no deal is in place, I think it is likely that Arsenal are actively looking for additional forward help. There seems to be interest in Marouane Chamakh from Serie A side Marouane Chamakh. And Arsenal were reportedly working on a deal that was contingent on how Chamakh performed in ACoN. Fiorentina have a concern about the Morrocan’s mental state and fitness. If there are promising signs early in ACoN, the deal would supposedly get rubber stamped. What this means is that while it is quiet now, the end of this transfer window could wind up being as active for us as the summer.

As for whether or not there will be transfer dealings the only thing I care to comment on is this – on Monday prior to the FA Cup match Arsene clearly confirmed that the club’s priority is Champion’s League football, cup competitions like the FA Cup were added bonuses. If the Champion’s League is the minimum requirement for Arsenal then securing it has to be done all out which to me means we have to improve the squad. I think the squad is good. The problem is you have to had the caveate – when healthy. Can anyone remember when we were last all healthy. I definitely think a line up like this – Szczesny, Sagna, Merte/Kos, Vermaelen, Santos, Song, Ramsey/Wilshere Arteta, Gervinho, Walcott, RvP is as good talent wise as any of the top teams. The problem is – we have yet to have that team on the pitch. Therefore we need the help. Arsene and Arsenal need to get busy.

And this . . .I was a guest this week on the Arsenal America Podcast. I sat on a round table with Arseblog columnist Tim Stillman. Right after an interview with Jeremy Wilson of the Telegraph.  You can find it here: http://www.arsenalamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/AA011312.mp3

A day on and I don’t have much to add. And overall I agree with the comments here. We were maybe a hair unlucky in the match itself (as we are with injuries) but, as the saying goes, you make your own….Swansea showed more spirit and teamwork than we did, and if anybody deserved all three points it was them.

I had hoped for a good match from Aaron Ramsey and it was not forthcoming. Still, relative to the general lack of commitment coming from the rest of the team, he at least continued to push. Like Kiwi’s wonderment over Theo Walcott, I’m equally perplexed how the manager can continue to play Andrey Arshavin. Blind hope that his record buy will come good or that his lone league goal having come against Swansea means that more will come if used against the same opponent? If I was AOC I would be seriously thinking about a transfer/loan request given what’s being played ahead of me….

My only thought is that, like in August, it’s all a ruse to prise some money out of Kronke and the board to make some deals happen at the deadline. Speaking of which, boy oh boy did we miss Arteta yesterday. And taking the lowest form of solace available (the “I told you so”….), he’s one (RVP the other) who I had said before we simply cannot afford to lose.

So now a week until another beat down from ManU? Frankly, I don’t think we can afford it. If it comes I’d say top 4 is a dream and we had better act because Europa League visions will kill off our summer plans and the fight will be (again) about retaining players…. Suddenly it’s a “must win” and given recent displays I cannot see it happening. Will Vermaelen, Arteta and Sagna all suddenly be fit? (Why not Wilshere too, while were at it?….) Maybe we can get something from the match but have some of the premature returnees (all like new signings) limp off at the end (for another several months….) so that the need for DDDs (Deadline Day Deals) is still pressing.

Frankly, all told, I’m running out of plausible scenarios and I think praying for miracles will be our best bet….I guess there’s always winning the CL (to retain our place in the competition) but that’s a complete LOL-LAM (Laughing Out Loud-Like a Maniac….) proposition. I’d like to be upbeat, see a silver lining, etc., but reality is interfering…..

well, this should pretty much confirm to those who may have been on the fence. arsenal are mediocre at best. here’s to hoping for a turn of fortunes, but i won’t hold my breath….

Van Persie’s goal aside, it all looked a bit grim viewing really. Swansea (the ex-Chamipionship side) looked a far more committed side with a clear formation and M.O. and far superior ball retentioon. We, on the other hand, failed to control the ball AT ALL after they levelled at 1-1.

Despite the goal, for those who saw the game, I’m at a loss to find a ray of hope on Theodore Walcott. His alround play is simply dense. This great rapport thing with Van Persie is a nonsense. Walcott has his pace and little else yet because our squad is so woefully thin in attack he gets an inordinate amount of game time and yet never improves. The ocassional hat-trick hardly amounts to progress.

That’s 6 points thrown away against bread and butter opposition. Will Wenger start to understand that he’s constantly running the squad on 3 cylinders? Probably not. Top 4 is really looking a major battle. And IF we get it Wenger will talk it up big time. Going on and on and on about how everyone doubted him and this team – when the truth is with a better restocking of this team we could be doing what Spurs are doing and being a player in the title race.

What Rednapp is doing for Spurs is an uncomfortable reminder that Wenger’s way is simply one approach and a failed one at that. Rednapp shows what you can do by mixing up your squad replenishment strategy. He finds players with a point to prove and motivates them. He shows again this season that Arsenal fans bias is nothing more than that. We pay more on remuneration to our lot than Spurs do on their squad – so that kinda negates the high moral values lecture.

No doubt our ‘values’ will see the utterly useless Walcott get a monstrous payrise and extension all as part of some mysterious grand vision. Answer this one, who offers more return Walcott or Arteta? Why don’t we flick Walcott and use the money we have tied up in him on an Arteta-like attacker? Someone who can do something NOW consistently game after game? Is that too hard? Apparently not for Spurs and Rednapp.

      @Kiwi, Kiwi:
Whether we sell Walcott or not, we have so much money available to
bring in someone else, that it doesn’t matter. It is not about money.

I think Theo, like many of our players, is very inconsistent.
He has moments and games that make you go… YES! and then… nothing.
His speed changes the way teams defend us.
Speed KILLS… and you just have to look at the Swansea match to see that.
They were faster than us all over the pitch.
And Theo has crossed the ball better this season as well.
I am not saying he’s the finished product, but he’s hardly the reason
the club is shite at times… RVP, Gervinho and Theo in attack, have
caused havoc for opponents this season, on more than one occasion.

Having said all that, I’d give the OX a start over Theo for competitions
sake… but Wenger wouldn’t. And with Gervinho away, we will get stuck
with someone on the other side of the field with ZERO speed, like Arshavin,
Rosicky, Benayoun, or whomever we want to put over there…

We’ve invested heavily in Theo, and he’s what? 23?
Imagine if we sold him, and he got some proper coaching and blossomed
at a new club? Then what? We’d be a laughing stock, … oh right,
we’re headed in that direction anyway.

15 days left in the window.
      we’re fecked.
Going to take another EMBARRASING BEAT DOWN by UNITED to make
Arsene and Arsenal act in a transfer window.

Only positive could be that kick up the ass Wenger needs to buy some players, but apart from that it was absoloutely hideous. Equalise 2-2 and just give the ball away straight after, ridiculous.

Just keep throwing the likes of Djourou Mertsacker Koscielny and Miguel out there defensively, and we’ll play ourselves out of a Top 4 spot, no problem at all.

This BS about how good Koscielny is… is Arsenal fan CRAP.
He is so inconsistent, and with Mertsacker next to him, they are PATHETIC.

    A recipe for FAILURE.

    oh. and off topic.
    FIRE WENGER. Please.

Bashing on again about how the January Window should be scrapped… and that
Arsenal will (once again) NOT BRING ANYONE IN during the window.

F.U. you fecking WANKER… the league shouldn’t change the RULES because
you are a cheap bitch… and refuse to infuse the club with proper talent and spend the clubs MULTI-MILLIONS in profits on players.

Either adjust and COMPETE within the League rules… or LEAVE.

Not sure what I’m watching in the 1st Half.

    Swansea absolutely ALL OVER US.
The have to be one of the fittest teams in the EPL, because they relentlessly
pressure the ball… and every time we steal it or get a turnover, we give it right back.

Does not bode well, unless something changes in the 2nd half.
Swansea will undoubtedly keep pressuring us. We aren’t close to the
“one touch” ball control team we have been in previous years. If you are on
your game, and can counter and pass the ball well, you can carve a team like
the Swans up… but we do NOT have that ability right now.

    Some obsverations:
How many times are we going to pass it back to the keeper to punt it up the field?
Why is Djourou so far up the pitch regularly, as he is not exactly speedy getting
back, and… he is not a good passer, or penetrator with the ball.
Can we stop kicking the ball directly back to the other team after we get from them? kind of defeats the purpose of the sport!

We miss Arteta in the line-up quite a bit.

Hope the 2nd half is a “different game”… because its all Swans control and possession. We better counter and convert.

If drawing at home to Wolves is the form of title winners, does that mean were still in the mix?

This will be a really tough away game, but seeing as RVP has been lounging in Dubai since the Fulham game, hopefully he’ll be fresh and sharp, and not walking around in the second half. If our midfield is on song (No pun intended) , hopefully they’ll carve out enough chances for RVP/Walcott/Arshavin to get at least 2. We really need that second goal

  9. stag133 15 January, 2012 at 00:04 Log in to Reply

Another really big match for Arsenal… with Tottenham AND Liverpool dropping points at HOME to lesser teams.

Door creaks open again for Arsenal FC, and we’ve fallen on our face mostly when this has happened recently.

Its not easy on the road in the EPL, that’s a fact.

With RVP rested, hoping he’ll keep from walking around the pitch all 2nd half!
and maybe pop in a pair of goals to lead us to a big win.

      @DaAdminGooner, Cheers….

Big Match for Aaron Ramsey, returning to Wales for the 1st time since Gary
Speed’s suicide. Hopefully he can have a fine one, with assists/goals so
That “everybody” is a winner, i.e., Arsenal, Wales, etc….IMO Ramsey seems to
Do better when he’s fresher and with a full week off since the Leeds
      Match, I’m hoping for a good outing….

Still need some sort of word-wrap or something (help me out ‘puter people…)
      In the reply box….
