The saying goes to be the best; you have to beat the best. And for Arsenal if they are trying to prove they have Championship ambitions, then their trip to the Etihad on Sunday is a true test of their silverware desire. We’ve been told that the first four games were against ‘lesser teams’. That they didn’t mean much, and while I disagree, this match is a chance to hush those doubters up.

The focus this week is all turned to Merseyside for the supposed biggest match of the week. Well they are wrong. In my opinion this is the biggest and tastiest. Both of these teams are looking to continue to build momentum and further establish their credentials. For City, they are going to want to show that last season was no mere chance of luck. They are going to want to show that this team as it is constituted is a long-term title challenger.

For Arsenal they will want to show that their ambitions lie beyond just finishing in the top four and that the new found team spirit on display can carry them far.

The match itself sets up some interesting choices for both Managers. For Arsene Wenger he has two critical choices to make in my opinion. The first is in his central defense. Does he keep the unit that has been so stellar together? Or does he opt to bring in Laurent Koscielny. You can make a case for either set up and in my lineup below I’ve opted for Koscielny. This is not a knock on Mertesacker who has been huge beyond just his lanky frame.  I’ve projected LK6 because of the speed and 1 v 1 skill that both Agüero and Carlos Tevez possess. More so than anyone the Arsenal back 4 have faced, this season, the movement, decision making, and skill of these two skill players will give them problems. Having Koscielny on who is more mobile and skilled in these 1 v 1 cases might be better. However, Mertesacker has faced off against the likes of Spain and Holland and done well so you could argue that his positional reading and game awareness will be fine. Either way Arsenal should be okay.

The next decision for Arsene Wenger is whether to try Olivier Giroud up top again or opt for Gervinho in the middle acting as a false 9 like he did against Southampton. This formation took advantage of a defense that was having issues and conceding shots all over the place. City’s defense while markedly better than Southampton has had issues this season. They have already conceded 6 goals this campaign and cannot seem to close out opponents.

The fluidity of the Arsenal attack versus Southampton was amazingly good. They exploited space well and their movement and decision making made bad defenders looks worse. The speed of the attack was overwhelming for Southampton and lining up this way may force Mancini to keep Yaya Touré to sit back. This would be beneficial to Arsenal in terms of handling the City attack. City have sat deeper this season but when Mancini moves Touré more forward this is when the City attack becomes more deadly. Having Arsenal set up in a way that forces City to be more behind the ball from the midfield back obviously has its upside.

As for Mancini he has been a bag full of experiments. Mostly in terms of formation. He has gone from his preferred 4-2-3-1 to a 3-4-1-2. With 3 at the back he has opted for new signing Maicon over Zabaletta but neither has showered them with glory and has struggled with pacy wingers. The combination of Podolski and Gibbs could cause City a number of problems. When Zabaletta or Maicon have had problems this has pulled the ever reliable Vincent Kompany out of position and opened up space – one of the reasons why I think City have conceded so many goals – and this has opened space to attack the box.

Then there is the psychological factor for both teams. Arsenals are flying high. They boast the best defense in the league. There is a new excitement around Arsenal as Mikel Arteta points out:

“It’s been a big transformation, in every sense. First of all, with the atmosphere around the club and team.”

“We put the team before anything else and play for each other and when you do that most of the time you will score.

Overall everything seems positive for the Gunners. While City is winning there is this strange air that has come across them this season. Last season there was an air of confidence and arrogance to them and you knew they would be in for it. Now it seems to some extent that with the league won, that success is a foregone conclusion. It seems that that the hangover from last may still lingers.

What has happened to the defense of last season? Joe Hart has looked pedestrian. It’s only in their attack that the quality of last season still shines through. Now, this is not to diminish City. This is for the most part the team that won the league last season. And as you may have saw, caused some problems for Real Madrid. But it is that gut-wrenching last second loss that may still weigh heavy on them. Madrid was ripe for the taking with the club in disarray behind the scenes. If City were going to get anything it was the perfect moment. Yet they didn’t. Once again there defense let them down. Once again they allowed an opponent to cut open their defense and score. So how City approaches this match is also a big question mark.

The most interesting part of this game will be the midfield match up. Arsenal’s strength this season has been the midfield. The combined work of Arteta, Cazorla, and Diaby has been fantastic. But they are coming up against a midfield that features Yaya Touré (the most important City player) and Javi Garcia (who looks to have displaced the injured Gareth Barry). The only question remains David Silva, a quality Spanish player to be sure but so far the roar around him paled to his success from last season. Missing from City will be Samir Nasri (shame that one). Nasri will be out nursing an injured thigh so James Milner will feature on the wing. How these midfields battle will ultimately dictate the game in my opinion. The key to midfield battle will be how well does Abou Diaby stack up against Yaya Touré.

The Frenchman certainly looks good but he is going up against one of the best. If he can negate Touré’s presence then I like the Arsenal midfield to come out ahead in this battle. If Diaby can’t balance it out then a rampant Touré will make life especially hard for us.

Overall I think these teams match up better than people think. And while people will wax poetic about the first home game at Liverpool since the findings of the independent Hillsborough Commission, the true football aficionado will have their eyes cast on this match. It will be (hopefully) a good solid match. And while the outcome doesn’t mean as much this early for either team – it still can make a statement of intent and cause people to take notice.

How the Match Should play Out:
I expect this to be a chess match. The previous ties against these two teams have been good cagey affairs with neither wanting to concede to the other. Arteta’s late winner last season could’ve cost City the title. Lucky for them United couldn’t close the deal. Look for nothing to change. City will sit deeper as they have been doing most of this new season. But they will not lack options. They will be dangerous on the attack but with Arsenal’s speed they will likely be susceptible to the counter. I expect the Arsenal defense to play within themselves. The CBs haven’t ventured too forward this season and I don’t expect that to change. Arsenal will look to find their moments and hit City with speed. It has all the makings of a classic hard fought draw – something that would benefit both sides.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal. Vito Mannone. With Szczesny out for 3 weeks, the Italian gets a chance to make his stake to the starting role. A solid performance against City will go a long way to doing that.

Manchester City. Yaya Touré. One of the biggest reasons Arsenal looked so good against City last season at the Emirates was his departure early on in the game. He is such a presence that City hardly looks a threat without him.

Projected Lineups:

Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal: Fabianski (shoulder) Frimpong (knee) Rosicky (hamstring) Sagna (broken leg) Szczesny (ankle) Wilshere (ankle)

I am just amased how good Cazorla looks. In my opinion he is the best Player of the EPL (a tie with Hazard) this far.
We showed we can sprint with the big boys but unfortunatly we are in a marathon.

@Ty, Few players click quite like Cazorla. What a player.

Just watched highlights of the Fulham Wigan game and Berbatov shows us again that we were quite stupid not to go for him. We had RVP as leverage and he would have been brilliant, regardless of whether Giroud comes good or not (quality depth is this Arsenal squads biggest weakness I feel)

    • Kiwi 24 September, 2012 at 20:51 Log in to Reply

@OziKenyan, Yeah, he seemed a great fit to me. At his stage he’d likely be happy with a reduced playing time role and would have given us that X-factor in the big and the tight matches. No opposition would like seeing Berbatov getting ready to come on. Hopefully we don’t end up regretting it too much…

      @OziKenyan,

Hooray ozi. Have to agree with you 1000% on this one. I thought Berba would have been a hrat buy for us and rate him over Giroud at this time.

Disappointingly for all Arsenal fans the teams under Gallas, Fabregas and Van Persie never grabbed the fans hearts in a convincing manner. Fans wanted to support them but were forever left feeling saddened by the inconsistent and callow performances and the lack of mental grit in the team make-up. Wenger’s constant reference to the ‘mental strength’ in the team only served to make fans question his credibility or sincerity.

It’s über early days and so we can only look for early markers. For me one of those markers is the grit we see in individuals and in the collective. It seems a bit better doesn’t it. The buys over the last two seasons sseem to be a bit more convincing. Mertesacker, Arteta, young Oxlade-Chamberlain, Podolski and Cazorla all look committed AND talented. Gervinho and Giroud each have some caveats but this is where it is the collective that is crucial. The collective spirit can often carry the individuals who are struggling. So a flighty Gervinho and an adjusting Giroud may each find their game within the confines of a performing team with a hard edge, whereas that hard edge was simply never sufficiently present in the teams of the last 7 years.

Like everyone, I’m still watching and reflecting on what I see. Fragility remains, several important players are still to prove their durability, we still need to see how we respond to the first on-field disappointment, and of course we need to see whether this defensive grit and cohesion can imbed in the psyche. I see a glimmer of hope.

Vermaelen, the captain, has a hard edge and steel in his eyes. I’ve said for a while I like the CB trio more than any other since our winning days. Podolski and Cazorla are players who look like winners NOW and their immediate integration has meant that Van Persie’s loss which forced a spreading of responsibility is a plus. Arteta is a pro’s pro. I have to concede that Song leaving was for the greater good. Wenger’s played Russian roulette for 7 years, this might be his break year. If Diaby plays 40 games, Wilshere comes back, and we get 25 games out of Rosicky it might be enough to be interesting.

Early days, but the team is doing what I hoped for. They’re not being beaten, they’re accumulating points at an ok clip, they’re looking cohesive, and so they’re building a bit of confidence. Individually some of the new boys are stepping up and accepting responsibility Podolski and Cazorla. We honestly couldn’t have asked for more. The challenge is to turn this initial 10 game stanza into a positive chapter, then we worry about the next 10 games.

      @Kiwi,

Spot-on. Win against Chelsea and we’ve set ourselves a fantastic platform for the season

  5. OziKenyan 23 September, 2012 at 18:37 Log in to Reply

    Right a few points:

-Gervinho is finally starting to grate on me! Once Wilshere is fully fit, I’d be quite happy to see him installed as our no 10 (CAM) with Cazorla pushed out wide.

-Jenkinson continues to impress (surprisingly so). Another good game from him. I think Sagna still gets in when he’s fully fit and up to speed, but I’m finally starting to not be too concerned about his backup and eventual successor (still a few seasons away).

-Mannone at fault for the goal. 2 goals conceded in the league thus far, both from keeper errors. Heart-breaking for the defence, but something that can be improved.

-Mertesacker is a positional colossus! Combined with his immense reach and good technical ability, he’s been an absolute rock. What happened to Vermaelen? I didn’t catch why he was absent..

-It’s clear that this Arsenal side has the capacity (and more importantly, the focus) to go toe-to-toe with anyone in the league. I think we can beat anyone on any given day, the next big question is, do we have the squad depth to keep up the playing quality in the presence of injuries? A question that can only be answered over the course of the season and I’m not too confident. Particularly Cazorla…

    • soccerfreak 23 September, 2012 at 19:32 Log in to Reply

      @OziKenyan,
      Shocking match at Anfield.
Today would have been the day van Persie would have felt the difference between his previous club and his new club
Its completely another experience to run with the wind behind your back (i.e. the referee on your side)
3 decisions. All against Liverpool. Shocking.
The red card for Shelvey, the penalty for Valencia, and not giving the red card to (M)vP
Feel for Liverpool and another day of disgust for SAF and the whole ManU setup.

    • Caribkid 24 September, 2012 at 03:27 Log in to Reply

      @OziKenyan,

Beg to differ Ozi, but putting a 19 year old returning from a 14 month injury would be totally counter productive, especially when even at his best he had very little final product in either goals or assists.

JW still needs a lot of polishing and would be better suited on left as when with Bolton or in the Diaby role between the AM and DM. Closest thing we have to Carzola running the AM position right now is Ramsey and Rosicky and they would still be a substantial drop in quality.

oh, you know what they say…
imitation in most sincere form of flattery!

We stole a point on the road at City.
That’s a big point, and while we outplayed them in the first half,
    and they scored…
They played us in the 2nd half, and we scored.

Ummm. Gervinho SUCKED… he regularly sucks at shooting. It’s rather embarrassing how bad he is…

But both teams remain unbeaten, and most Arsenal fans would have taken the point and been thrilled… so be it.

@arteta3sheds, go cry yourself a river.
you support the short term… and the people who have taken this club from a champion to MONEY GRUBBING BASTARDS.
I’ll support players … and wait for the club to return to its former greatness.
        Go buy a kit.

        • arteta3sheds 24 September, 2012 at 10:16

          @stag133,
I have supported Arsenal since the 70s. Throughout that period we were not always a glorious team like we are now under the great man, the manager of the decade. Whether we spend or not my support stays the same, I won’t switch and talk about following Charlton, QPR or Man City because my club refuses to follow the Pied Piper into a pit full of debt.

You dear Stag are the type of supporter no one wants, you are an anti- supporter so counterproductive and depressing. Instead of you applauding our teams performance you spend your time hating on Gervinho. You suck Stag, sorry that is the reality, I think you have cried enough rivers for the whole of Arsenaldom, while you cry and moan, I enjoy.

What players do you support? Only ones that cost a lot of money I presume. You are like a spoilt child, grow the eff up dude.

        • stag133 24 September, 2012 at 14:05

@arteta3sheds, alas, you are correct. I am wrong. everything you say is right… everything I say is wrong.
I am suck. You are a great supporter.

I am sorry to bother you. I’ll go watch tennis now.

Regarding the actual match (rather than my ongoing-and rather pointless-battle with Mr 133 over the comments)….. it actually does present itself as a rather fascinating one. I’ve been arguing that we’ve almost been playing with 3 at the back given how far Gibbs has pushed forward and City seem to be doing likewise. This means that mistakes in MF should be avoidable, but, if they do happen, the exposure is extreme. Sorry, but the likes of Tevez, El Kun and Ballotelli are far more deadly than the guys from Montpellier and Don Vito doesn’t cover his goal quite like the English Wojciech Szczesny (Joe Hart). The other personnel in defense aren’t quite as solid as we might like to believe either (witness TV5 giving up a pointless pen in midweek, and we all know about gangly Per and goofy Jenks)….

So it becomes about positioning and pressure and a battle of the midfields. Santi vs Silva, Abou vs Yaya and (maybe) Arteta vs Garcia. I haven’t seen the latter play so I’m curious. Interesting how the biggest deadline day transfer (since Totts couldn’t pay for the other Portuguese guy–Joao Moutino) was met with a collective “meh”—15 million pounds hardly raises an eyebrow up there these days….

If we can win these match ups, esp. with a telling run from Diaby or a great inside out pass from Santi, the game might break open, though I think the forwards will do fine just winning corners and FKs. Vermaelen is due and Per at the front post seems like something that could bear fruit. (Everything I’ve seen say Kos only plays at the league cup….) Likewise, I think, Giroud (and Dzeko for City) only comes on as a sub as the midfielders tire and putting the ball downfield quickly becomes “plan B.”

So, personally, I see a cagy match and it’ll be the reaction of the clubs to it that matters almost as much as the result itself. In other words, a good performance and no injuries would be just about enough for me, with a result (including a draw, nobody actually wins at Eastlands these days) being gravy….

But, as always, of course, WTF do I know?…..

    Go on….

  8. highburyterracesteve 23 September, 2012 at 05:05 Log in to Reply

I don’t get it, my friend (Stag, below)….You can’t take over (the comment section of) a blog, ranting and raving at every turn, telling how you will actively root against the club (and for all the big spending, free-wheeling ones) and then complain about apathy!!!! You’ve gotten what you wanted, you’ve driven away “supporters,” would-be fans of the club…..

No, no, of course you can…. Your motivation and objectives and logic are so twisted up that it’s all about blame, all the time. Blame the club, blame the supporters, blame everybody. And, as always, I’ll get the “what are you on about?” tag-line…..

In earlier threads (this week) I actually have been in agreement with the points you make about the match regarding team depth and the takeaway from the CL matches on Tuesday. If anything, however, there is a shred of hope that the pressure on the “bought” players could tell and that a superior team dynamic from Arsenal might be the wedge. What a turnaround that would make, though of course, longer term, it could be that various characters are just hoping to get a look–an audition–from City, for future transfer windows, where they too might end up as lottery winners.

We ARE the feeder club, we CANNOT compete. These are the “truths” put forth from representatives of both clubs. That’s how the game works these days. It’s still a game, however, and it must be played…..In our position (as I’ve already said) “Hope for the best, expect the worst” is probably the only real path for the supporter. Or Visa versa if, in truth, you want comment writers of your own ilk (aka, haters) to come out of the woodwork…..

(And props to Stag134, who got right to the pith far quicker than I….)

absolute apathy, created by the club…
is this what they wanted? they got it.

should be a great day of soccer tomorrow morning. (here in the US)
    lots of story lines…
    ManU @ Liverpool
    Arsenal @ ManCity

Do I think Arsenal “can” win the game tomorrow… sure… I definitely think we can
beat just about anyone, on any given day… that goes for pretty much any team in the league. We have a decent shot of taking points…
but I think its more like we get slapped around a bit, because the Champions have not started off the season the way they had envisioned.
They have so much depth, and the mid-week CL games usually affect the teams that played in them… so the depth figures in, in my mind.

I hope we steal a point… but I’ll go for 3-1 City, and really hope it doesn’t get out of hand in this one…
and I look for Liverpool to play well, and draw with United.
