2010-2011 Arsenal Season Preview
The glaring image of the 2009-2010 season was of a team decimated by injuries limping to a 3rd place finish. It was better than the previous season when Arsenal were clearly out of the title before the season begun. But in 2009-2010 with an endless parade of first-teamers lounging out on the trainer’s table, Arsenal managed to reach above their head and contend for the title until April when the weight of injuries (and some really bad goal keeping) did them in.
So what is in store for 2010-2011? Well, it’s hard to say and it depends on who you ask. As a whole the team doesn’t look much stronger than last season, with the exception of the fact that long-term injuries heading into the start are limited – Ramsey is the real long -termer with Bendtner close behind. Other injuries are niggly or just players not being match-fit.
Obviously the goal is to contend and win silverware this year. The case for the team being too young is over. Many of the players have been blooded and matured. There is some real talent on the team and there are still some glaring holes. And that is why when it really comes down to it, pegging where the team will finish is hard.
This is an important season for many but without harping on the obivous let’s take a look at our key areas shall we?
Goalkeepers
Do I need to mention how much of a sore spot this is? In Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski Arsenal have a dynamic duo of colossal blunder proportions. Picking one over the easy isn’t easy because they both come with sever faults. We went into them earlier but just to be sure, Fabianksi makes bone headed mistake after bone headed mistake. After claiming he was good enough to be Arsenal’s number 1 who goes out for the Polish National team and shows why absolutely he shouldn’t even be the number 1 of my son’s U7 team.
Almunia almost seems stomachable with the likes of Fabianski to compare to. But Almunia is no confidence builder either. As much as he says he is number one materials he doesn’t act one. His ability is questionable and while he is good at stopping shots his decision making is absolutely poor and causes too many bad things to happen.
Lying in wait are two goalies of the future Vito Mannone and Woijicech Szczesny. When deputised last season, Mannone showed real verve and steel but was prone to little bouts of showing his inexperience. When I think of Mannone’s role in the future I think of him as Arsenal’s number two. Bsed on all reports and everyone who has watched him play the real deal seems to be our keeper of the Szczseny. He is comfortable for a young guy in taking command and control of the defenders in front of him. HE barks and yells and does everything Almunia and Fabianski don’t do. He is aggresssive on dishing the ball out. Simply put he does seem to have what it takes.
What happens in goal is up in the air. For sure someone is going out on loan. Who that is remains to be seen. But let’s assume everything stays status quo, I suspect that Almunia will start and Szczseny will be the back up playing Carling Cup and possibly FA Cup matches.
Defence
Going into last season Arsenal fans were worried about an unknown filling in a starting role at CB for Arsenal. That signing Thomas Vermaelen turned out to be one of the best if not the best off season signing in the EPL. He had presence, learned from game to game, had strength and stell against opponents and had a penchant for scoring. He played pretty much through the entire season until the end when he suffered an injury that kept him out of the last few games of the season. With the loss of Sol Campbell and William Gallas. Vermaelen becomes the central point of the defence.
Who he will be partnered with remains to be seen. Johann Djourou is back from a season long injury but remains and untested commodity. The other defender comes to Arsenal much in the way Vermaelen did, as an absolute unknown and not raising a lot in terms of confidence of Arsenal fans.Laurent Koscielny was one of the best defenders in Lique 1 and had very good points through the pre-season. He did have some low points but that was too be expected. Ideally we would all like a more seasoned and “harder” player in this spot but for now we have to be happy with what we have and I expect Koosh (as I like to call him) to get the nod to partner with Vermaelen.
On the wings we have 4 solid players in Sagna, Eboue, Clichy and Gibbs. Expect Eboue and Sagna to rotate – one for away matches and one for home. Eboue also has the ability to be more of threat onthe attack than Sagna so look for him to start onthe wing where his agility might have an advantage against teams. On the other side is Clichy and Gibbs. If either starts we are solid but Gael Clichy isn’t getting younger and Gibs is a very hungry lad. His display against Hungary for the national team showed that this is a boy going places. He plays well and is a threat with the ball because of his pace. His crosses still need work and this why I think Clichy will get the nod to start.
While many cried about our defencive weakness our back four last season were second behind Chelsea in allowing the least amount of shots on goal. The problem was those that did get through found the back of the net more times the not because of weak goal tending. Yes, we need some help here but I don’t think this is a woeful unit byt any stretch of the imagination.
Midfield
Rejoice we are now talking about one of our strengths and with the services of Cesc Fabregas assured for at least another season the unit looks as capable as ever. I still have my issues with Denilson. I honestly don’t think this kid is good enough for Arsenal. Sure he passes well and every know and then that Brazillian ankle of his gets a wonder goal in, but let’s face it, he loses the ball to easioly and when called on to play a more defencive role he just doesn’t cut it.
Diaby is another one who had fits back and forth last season. But I am not ready to give up on the big guy because I really like how he looked when he was on. He is good turning with the ball is big in the middle and has a tendancy to making some people look absolutely stupid. But on the down side he is apt to taking matches off or making costly boneheaded mistakes (example – the own goal against United last season).
Samir Nasri who started last season on the injured list, looks like a man on a mission – he looked good through the entire pre-season and reports frmo France say he was pretty good for the national team. When asked about this season he said he wanted to step up and noted that he wasn’t just hungry for success he was starved. If he continues in the form he has been on, and builds on the flashes he showed last season, I think NAsri can build a tandem with Fabregas that could cause teams fits. Both are good players, Fabregas is special, Nasri is just good – damn good. They can play off of each other. I like them as our starting midfielders supported by the Cameronian wonder Alex Song.
Songaldinho surprised everyone last season. I don’t think I remember anyone out there saying they say this kid as the DM the team was so desperately needing. But he was. He was solid throughout and if you didn’t think so, you only needed to watch both Barca matches to understand how much this team missed him. In the first game against Barca, Song kept Messi in check and limited any chances he had. With Song on the sideline for the second leg and Diaby and Denilson trying to cover Messi, we suffered and Messi ran free. The rest is history.
The midfield is rounded out by Rosicky, Wilshere and Ramsey and an assortment of first time first team youngsters. Ramsey is out on long term with his ankle injury. If he can mkae a recovery physically and mentally, then the midfield has another special player in the making. HIs future midfield partner is Jack Wilshere who had is first taste of the national team this past week. Wilshere has been on a path to prove he belongs with the team. His spell at Bolton gave him the much needed EPL and first team experience he wanted. Now he is eager to show he belongs. He is getting that chance and I belive he could be instrumental in mounting a sustained run for the FA Cup.
The midfield is strong and in good hands. I expect them to be trouble for teams.
Strikers:
Run through them – Walcott, Arshavin, Van Persie, Bendtner and new boy Chamakh. This is an attackers delight. When interested Arshavin is as skilled with the ball as anyone. If he learns what to do with the ball when he has it, Walcott will slice defencive units appropriately. If he can stay healthy Van Persie could be the next coming of Dennis Begkamp. Nicky B is Nicky B and if he ever realizes to use HALF his talent he might actually be the striker he is in his own mind. New boy Chamakh, definitely looks like he is up for it and gives us the needed presence in the air we didn’t have last year.
I am in now way worried about our ability to put the ball in the net.
Outlook:
Regardless of what you think the talent up front and in the middle is as good as any of the leaders in the EPL. Maybe more so. The question still remains about the back side of the team. Without a true number one keeper I am not confident in winning the EPL title or Champion’s League. It is that simple, Fabianksi and Almunia may net you the Carling Cup or the FA Cup, but they are just too damned accident prone to do win when it counts – in the big games. If Arsenal sign a Mark Schwarzer, or Shay Givens as has been rumoured, the chances of winning the EPL and Champion’s League improve dramatically. Right now they are fair at best.
The talent of the team is going to keep them in the hunt. The lack of movement by every other team except City means that nothing has really changed in the teams around them. If everything stays as it is, I think Arsenal are set to finish 3rd or 4th. Before the kool aid drinkers kill me and ask for Arsenal fan club card – it hurts me to say that – I want my team to win every year. A lack of improvement in the keeper area though will limit us in the ability to do that.
The Rest of the League:
The fight for number one in the EPL has never been tighter. That seems to be the key phrase this year. I think you have to view City and Spurs as serious threats but you have to wonder how much. SPurs haven’t added a single player to last years squad. Peter Crouch could be on the way out and their are already mounting injuries at the back. Fat ‘Arry that saviour of English Football believes he is at least 3 players short of being a true contender. Who am I to disagree with a Spur manager on that.
My dislike of City is not unknown to anyone. Again they are the most active team in the transfer market spending money but as everyone else is saying – is it wisely? They have gotten some tremendous players but as Madrid and City showed last year, you could have all the talented players in the world assembled in one place, if they can’t play as a team they will not win a damn thing. Real went out and got ourhino to manage their lot and build a team. Roberto Mancini has yet to impress me that he is capable of doing that at City and it is why I think City may still struggle to ifnd that elusive Champion’s League spot.
Our old nemesis’ United and Chelsea remains as they are – always a threat to win the league. But you have to wonder if cracks aren’t starting to show. United haven’t done much to improve themselves should Rooney go out for long times. Hernandez is a great signing but it remains to be seen what he can do over the long haul of an EPL season. Berbatov is Berba and hasn’t not shown he is worth one penny of the big fee he was signed for. The new guy from Portugal is from a 3rd tier team and you have to wonder about that. Sure United are linked with WC star Mesut Ozil but that hasn’t materialized and I don’t hink United have the funds to pay for him.
Chelsea are letting players go. Defencive players in particular. And while I tend not to read too much in to the pre-season, their defence has looked worse then ours has. I am telling you right now, the WC showed teams how you should play against John Terry and that is to attack him directly with speed. He is losing his agility and when you do that and spin him around he will give up like he did in SOuth Africa. Still Chelsea have arguably the best striker inthe EPL in Didier Drogba, amd the best left back in the world in Ashley Cole, and Carlo Ancelotti gives them stability in management they haven’t had since Jose resigned. In my pained opinion, until they fall apart and until someone shows otherwise the Chavs have to be considered the favourites to win the league.
So if I were a betting man I think the table could fall out like this for the top 10:
1. Chelsea
2. Arsenal
3. United
4. Man City
5. Liverpool
6. Spurs
7. Everton
8. Birmingham
9. Aston Villa
10. Fulham
Again a lot could change that. The new 25 man rule could really change the make up of teams. There could be really solid players available for many of the lower tier teams and that could push them to marked improvements. Either way, I am looking for another exciting season.
Play On!

Thanks, you just saved my butt! I have to write a paper on this and turn it in tomorrow! You rock!
I am not sure where you’re getting your info, but great topic. I needs to spend some time learning more or understanding more. Thanks for great info I was looking for this information for my mission.
Amazing!! I hope you will keep up the outstanding work.
Thanks for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do a little research about this. We got a grab a book from our area library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I’m very glad to see such magnificent information being shared freely out there.

Overwelmed by the response Arthur? ;-)
I think the sense of dulled disappointment from the supporters to this news will be quite educational.
It’s hard not to be a tad sceptical as to why Wenger chooses now to break a career habit. Signing a long-term contract a year before his existing one expires, normally he confidently lets the clock tick down and smuggly tells everyone there is time to attend to it. Why change now? If he didn’t sign now and the season flumps AGAIN the board may be less eager to sign on terms that appealed.
This is one time I would have preferred him to let his contract wind down.
Could it be worse?
I hear his spin that; we couldn’t sign anyone in the past due to debt, and now that we can there is no one available, it’s garbage and fewer and fewer give his words credence. Anyway, settle in for another season of under-achievement.
“Seriously. Did you see the way their fans were ironically cheering Drogba’s hat trick? You could see it in their faces: What they really want is the moral high ground.”

Once, I could never imagine Arsenal without Wenger. Now, I rather not imagine an Arsenal with him.
I rather see Arsenal in the hands of a manager who puts the team first. Meaning if a goal-keeper is required, he gets him. Simple. No excuses. Now if this other manager plays the most boring kind of football and never wins anything for another 30 years, I would be fine with that. I just want to see a manager that cares about the football team. I don’t believe Wenger cares anymore. He has his own projects and is happy with having a hierarchy in the squad not based on merit but loyalty or being French. Plus it is annoying that he has a moral point to prove and back up every decision.
Wenger had no problem getting rid of Pires or other great players but seeing him persist for this long with the incompetent members in this squad is nothing but short of insulting the great Arsenal players who have played in past teams.
Great to be watching footy again, like Stag says. Also nowhere near as optimistic as I usually am for Arsenal matches. Loyalty schmoyalty, Vermaelen gets injured I’m turning into a Blackpool fan! We play them next week don’t we? They were excellent. Playing with zero pressure on their shoulders.
Oh and… Poisoned Le Sagna for the win baby!!
That signing was VERY FAST!!! Usually the git delays for almost a year before signing an extension. This time he signs it in just two days.
He KNOWS this season will be a big time disaster. We ALL feel it and he himself knows it.
The only silver lining this summer was that this was his last season. Surely he would be honorable enough to fuck off if this season didnt go well … WRONG!!!
The egotistical maniac will continue to impose his madness on the club and won’t stop till Arsenal drop to 10th and the fans start carrying torches and burning cars! The bastard!
If we get a keeper and CB I don’t think it will be a disaster; not great, but not a disaster. If we don’t do that, however…
Watching the early game today, you can see why Shay Given is surplus to requirements at City. Joe Hart is immense. City had no box-to-box CM’s though. 3 DM’s and 2 wingers. Doesn’t make much sense. Gareth Bale looked good I thought. Also, you could make a world-class team out of the 20 players that didn’t even make it onto the subs list for City. At least Paddy Vieira was ahead of those 20.
That lot – Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Malouda, Anelka, etc. – may be major flops in the WC, but when it comes to the EPL, it is simply another story.
Hey Mazz have you heard the good news? Wenger will stay with the Arsenal for another three years at least :-D
I am so relieved our future is in prudent hands, does anyone else out there share my enthusiasm? ;-)
No. ;)
No, what’s the good news?
Chelsea start out the season with 5 matches against
the flotsam and jetsam of the EPL…
West Brom
Wigan
Stoke
West Ham
Blackpool
Looks like 15 POINTS to start the season, and everyone else
will be playing catch up.
DOMINANT today at home against WBA as expected.
5-0, 67 minutes in…
I’ve seen enough.
But, oh, their debt.
Alot of debt, and no values. They may as well pack up.
Seriously. Did you see the way their fans were ironically cheering Drogba’s hat trick? You could see it in their faces: What they really want is the moral high ground.
I really wish we would have tried to sign Joe Hart. I’ve said since last season that he’s a keeper worth whatever amount of money because he’s so young and would spend the bulk of his career in a big team that play fantastic football coming to Arsenal. I think he would have jumped at the opportunity to play in the Champions League this year and the England #1 shirt would be his for years to come.
Once Buffon got injured, I knew it would be unlikely that City would let him go; especially with Given still injured. I held out hope that we could sneak him away.
we inquired about BOTH from what I’ve read…
why would City sell the younger keeper to one of their rivals?
I wanted Casillas about 5 years ago… but how likely was that?
oh!
and just read that HLEB could be headed to Liverpool.
Hleb and $$$$ for Mascherano.
Mascherano wants out of the UK, pronto.
I think Liverpool has actually had a good off-season.
Haven’t gone crazy, and have helped their team.
Hleb, would be a nice addition to them.
Somebody hide the sharp objects at Casa de Mazza.
Don’t worry. They’re all implanted in my Wenger voodoo doll.
You stick a bunch of those in the area of his wallet, by any chance? Because I’m not sure your voodoo guy knows what he’s doing.
LOL
Yeah I echo vibe’s statement because Wenger ain’t the one suffering. He couldn’t be happier.
I watched most of the Totts v City match…
and the Totts looked good, just couldn’t beat the keeper:
Joe Hart
A No.1 keeper saved City’s ass today.
Exactly what we need for those off days.
and I’ll disagree with DAG on Yaya, I thought he played
well today for City, one of the few.
—-
I doubt Given will be allowed to leave City… they have so
much money, I doubt they’ll let him go to Arsenal, a rival for the
Top 4… why make your rival better?
The same way, they won’t sell Bellamy to Tottenham…
sell him to Fulham? sure… but not a rival for a Top 4 spot.
—-
New season… watching football again is great.
but for the first time EVER, NOT looking forward to the Arsenal
match … on opening day.
As Josh noted above… going into a match with Liverpool to start
the season… with a HALF – ASS team… one injury to Vermaelen, and where in the world is this team, with NOBODY with any CB experience at this level.
Insanity.
Let’s give the manager an extension to 2014!
Flying off to Vancouver this morning – will have match preview up soon after I land.
Watching City v Spurs –
City look like SHIT. 3 midfielders sitting back not a true Central Midfielder in the lot. Spurs have tons of space on the counter attack. Mancini has set his side up like an Italian side. SWP is shit. Kolarov already looks like he is hurt and Ya Ya Toure knows only one way to pass via the chip shot.
Also I believe Schwarzer is not in the Fulham lineup today.
Agree with your assessment. But, never judge a team by their first game.
Last season, Arsenal were rocking in the first game and Everton looked like shit.
By the time the return game happened, Everton were beating the shit out of Arsenal.
also, Joe Hart looks immense and so mobile.
Reminds so much of Casillas 8 yrs ago.
A club which rewards non performing players with lucrative new contracts was bound to do the same with the manager as well.
Arsene signs till 2014.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/ars-ne-wenger-signs-contract-extension
Myles was right. This time he could not take a chance of waiting till mid season, because by then, Arsenal’s season could well be in tatters.
Arsene gives us a good laugh with his Arsespeak.
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-why-i-m-against-the-homegrown-rule
“I’ve been educating players since I was 25 and I know one rule. The first thing you do to develop a player is to put him with another good player.
“In my opinion if you are a great player, you want to play with great players. If you are a great musician, you want to play with an orchestra where you have the best musicians. If you offer the guy the chance to play in an orchestra with poor musicians, he will not be happy”
And we all thought ARsene doesn’t understand how Cesc feels. How wrong were we ??
http://www.twcanuck.com/the-wandering-canuck/2010/8/12/dncg-a-model-for-the-future-of-financial-stability-in-europe.html
I had not heard of the DNCG in France but clearly Wenger is doing his best to strive to the financial regulatory rules of this French organization. Maybe Arsene should just move Arsenal to France. That way, he won’t have to worry about rich owners spending silly money, he can field a non-English squad without getting grief and he won’t have to deal with Blackburn, Bolton and other long ball playing teams.
But that move won’t work because since all the other managers in France are trying to live within their means, Wenger won’t have a moral high ground to stand on. Nor can Wenger proudly boast about his youth experiment there as other French clubs (Auxerre) have worked on their youth projects as well. This would discount the fact that Wenger does love living in England. Maybe Wenger would like to emulate Guy Roux. I belive Roux won some cups and one league title in some 40 years with Auxerre. But I don’t believe Roux was under pressure to win something. And neither is Wenger. Wenger’s early titles at Arsenal has allowed him to settle in a nice comfy spot and keep building for the future. I might have had it wrong all along. Why did I bother comparing Ferguson vs Wenger. If Wenger wanted to compete against Roux, then he has already won. As long as Wenger does not get Arsenal relegated in the next 27 years, then he would prevail.
First I think Arsenal haven’t made a second bid for Schwarzer because they are waiting to see what happens at City. By all indications Hart is going to get the starting nod against Tottenham. Which is going to make Given ask for a move.
I think if Given is available Arsenal would move there first. He said in an interview at one point before his move from Newcastle to City that he thought he was going to Arsenal before City.
So I think we are going into our first match with a Lame Duck goal keeper.
Speaking of City if you want to know what you get for coming up from the ranks and being a solid player for years at City, ask Stephen Ireland who’s basically been told by Mancini – see ya and don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.
if you aren’t good enough to get into the team, then… oh well.
Stephen Ireland will be just fine wherever he lands, but he’s not good enough to play there any more in Mancini’s eyes.
As we know at Arsenal, all that really matters, is what the manager thinks.
Be warned suckas: I have assembled my fantasy team, and I dare say it’s pretty damn good. I even managed to do it without using any ManUre or Spuds players. Although I did have to use Chelsea players… in fact Arsenal, Chelsea, and Everton players make up 60% of my team.
Be warned, the Arsenal Red Cloud is getting ready to take all comers and grind them into the dust.
Comprised mainly of Manure, Chelsea and Everton players, we are getting ready to kick some royal butt ;)
Sorry, I don’t watch enough football these days to play. I played back in the 2003/2004 and did fairly well most weeks. I actually won one week. I had Hasslebaink in my squad and he scored four goals that day, then my defenders/goal keeper kept a clean sheet, and one of my defenders scored. You could only have two strikers and Cristiano Ronaldo was always in my squad because he was cheap back then and always scored. He balnaced out the price of having Henry. However, I joined mid-season and couldn’t win the league.
It was fun. I used to read all the previews and paid attention to who was playing whom. For instance, my entire defense/keeper would be based on the players likely to start, keep a clean sheet, and score a goal. I used Gallas and Terry quite a bit.
Likewise, the previews would always give a good indication of who might be injured or a reminder of who was suspended or in trouble with the team and might not feature. It can be frustrating to pick the wrong player for the week. A buddy of mine, playing fantasy football, picked Brett Favre as his first round pick this season. An hour later, heard rumors of him possibly retiring.
It’s fun but you have to have the time to do the research and I’m kinda busy. Anybody watch that show on FX called the league? Highly recommended for a few chuckles.
I started to write about this but didn’t when I heard Arsenal decided to no longer pursue Schwarzer. However, with the rumors gathering pace again, I’ve decided to say what I thought.
I know some might thing this idea is ridiculous but I’m not sure that Schwarzer will improve Arsenal. He’s a very descent keeper whose had some stellar performances but all keepers do from time to time. Most have identified goalkeeper as a position we desperately need to improve in. However, desperation can make people dilusional.
There is no guarantee that Schwarzer can come in and be our saviour. In fact, there’s no guarantee that this aging keeper is even as good as Almunia, let alone better. Many people thought Almunia was better than Lehmann. Many then thought that Fabianski would do better than Almunia. You simply never really know until you can watch them every week. I don’t watch Fulham every week so I can’t determine how good he is. Anybody here watch Fulham every week?
Back to the thread topic, I don’t share DAG’s optimisim concerning our defense. I think it is dreadfully woeful. We’re going to Liverpool with only Vermaelen and Koscielny as our recognized CBs. Djourou’s injured and the last I heard, Nordveit was playing for Norway’s U-21 team this weekend. Who plays if Kosceilny gets injured during the warm-up or Vermaelen gets sent off? Going into Liverpool with only two CD’s is a monster that Wenger has created.
While I’ve been critical of some tactical decisions he’s made in the past, I’ve never been one to criticize Wenger of how he runs the club. however, our situation is bordering on ridiculous. We’ll see if he can pull a rabbit out of a hat.
http://younggunsblog.co.uk/2010/08/nordtveit-in-doubt-for-liverpool-after-norway-mix-up/
Nordveit may not be available this weekend as per Young Guns.
I would never like to play Arsene at Poker, he would bluff my arse bankrupt.
BTW,
I did watch a lot of Fulham games last season and would not be displeased if we were to acquire Scwartzer. He is not a savior, but he is extremely suited for the Arsenal style of play and makes very few gaffes. Foremost, he doesn’t take s**t from defenders at corners and other set pieces. Secondly, he is very vocal and tries to organize his defense.
He may not have the shot stopping capabilities of Almunia or Flappianski, but is very rounded in his game approach.
Would he be an upgrade? hell, yeah!
JD, I agree with you. While Schwarzer may be an improvement over Mooney, a club like Arsenal really needs a top notch Gk and should be setting its sights much higher.
But then again, this club is no longer Arsenal, it is Arsenel. :(
Mark Hughes has just confirmed that Mark Schwarzer has handed in a formal transfer request.
Basically Hughes says Arsenal can come back and make an offer.
I hope Arsene pays what they want. No fooling around. What would’ve been even better is if this was done along time ago, and we had him in time for our game AT ANFIELD. Nevertheless, I would be very happy for him to sign before the window closes.
I didn’t know Arsenal’s bid was made in May. It was rejected and apparently since then Arsenal made no further bids? Wow. That is absolutely shocking. Either Arsenal turned elsewhere (which seems untrue) or in typical fashion, Wenger figured things would work out fine once the WC was over.
by the way, did anyone notice
we are top of the points table right now :P
i am sure wenger thinks that is because of his performance in the pre-season.
I always like when my team is top of the standings before a game is even played. It doesn’t really mean anything, but at least your team gets to be at the top of the table. It happens with Arsenal, and w/ Illinois in the Big Ten, and sometimes the Chicago teams in their confs/divs.

Showing us that he is still “Mad” Jens Lehmann – the retired Arsenal keeper had this to say about Manny:
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the now retired Lehmann argued that the player he scrapped with for a starting spot still has the quality to be in Wenger’s plans.
He said: “I know Manuel from his competition with myself and I can tell you he is very good.
“Sometimes, when you are playing for a big club you can’t always fulfil high pressure and expectations people have in you. But, he has done well and I would see how a new guy coming in would do as I know in the market it is hard to find somebody who is better than he is.”
For the record – I’ve very rarely slated Almunia. He’s got his faults such as poor distribution etc but as a goal-keeper doing the basics he’s not bad. The fact that he stepped in to replace a very good keeper in Lehmann in 07/08 and there was no discernable drop off in quality between the two – speaks volumes.
I’m of the opinion that if we get a couple of central midfielders who can perform basic tasks and actually apply themselves over the course of a game/season, and bring in a centre back or two, Manny Almunia goes back to being the decent keeper he was in 07/08 and 08/09.
It’s a chicken and egg situation. Some think that bringing a keeper like Schwarzer will calm the defence etc but I think it’s the opposite.
If Schwarzer does come, he better be careful what he wishes for. That blond hair could quickly turn a shade of grey.
Fixed your post….
“The fact that he stepped in to replace a ONCE very good keeper in Lehmann WHO WAS PRETTY MUCH FORKED BY 07/08 and there was no discernable drop off in quality between the two – speaks volumes.
;-)
….who would have also have failed a sanity test at that point and would go onto take a piss on the football pitch…yep, i get your point. But I still remember him passable that season and he could be again. Although ideally we would bring in a new one.
See this is what Wenger has done. His incompetance has meant I’m defending what – in ordinary circumstances – would be undefendable.
Believe me, I feel worse. Back then, I was trumpeting Mooney to take Jens place. I still say it was right the right move at the time. But that time has long since passed.
Anyway, he’s a good instinctual shot stopper. Maybe it’s like CK says, in another system…or maybe even with a decent defense in front of him. He might not be such a glaring problem, if there weren’t so many others right around him. So I take your point. Ish. ;-)
Speaking of time passed. You’re still on record with the one idea that likely would have spared us all of this.
no doubt, we need a CB and defensive midfielder as well, if we want to actually contend for anything…
but this is Arsenal and Arsene we are talking about… we can’t actually expect to fill gaping holes in the team, I mean… we’ve only had 4 months.
give me a keeper, and a CB, and we’ll be in the hunt for Top 4 glory.
@Mazza,
I will continually slate Almunia as long as he is playing for Arsenal with the defensive scheme we employ.
1) we play possession football and need a keeper who can at least roll the ball out to a back or MF. For some reason, Almunia gets brain farts when he is on the pitch and continues to lump the ball downfield 90% of the time. Of that 90%, we lose possession 80% of the time. That is just fu%^^$#g common sense. in three years, I have only seen him start 2 counter attacks.
When the ball goes out for a goal kick or the GK has the ball in his hands, this is the first cog in initiating the offense. Giving possession away 70% of the time means that a) we can’t start an attack and b) we have to fight to regain possession. One word for that scenario, “counter productive”.
2) because of the high defensive line we need a GK who is comfortable with the ball on his boots. The fu%*&er can’t even kick the ball, much less control it.
3) He offers no presence at the back and does not command or control his defensive line.
In other words, he is totally counterproductive to the way in which arsenal plays. He could be a decent GK for Bolton, Blackburn, etc, because they keep 8 men behind the ball, will kick your shite out if you try to intimidate their GK, and love to punt the ball down field and have their technically inept but pacey strikers chase the ball or head it on.
Again, we do not need a great GK, we just need a decent one who is compatible with our style of play.
Wenger just do us all a favour – fu*k off.
we’d never get 4th without Arsene Wenger.
we’d never make the money we do without Arsene Wenger.
we’d never lower the debt so fast without Arsene Wenger.
he’s the past, present and future of Arsenal… and the Arsenal Football Club … the board… just absolutely adore the man, he is a god to them…
ker-ching.
Yet more classic Arsespeak
http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-my-future-will-be-decided-very-soon
“My situation will be sorted out very soon,” he said. “But my commitment to the Club has nothing do with how well the season will go. That would be unfair.
“I have to show how much I believe in this team by showing my commitment. If I do not do well and one day the Club is not happy with me then I can completely understand that I will not be here anymore.
But my commitment has not to be linked like that – and anyway I believe we will do well this season.”
Wenger is a f&cking CUNT if he signs the new contract. He is VERY smart, he KNOWS this season will be a complete disaster and wants to sign early … usually he signs in April just a couple of months before his contract runs out.
I cant think of anything worse for the club at this point in time really.
AFTER spending the whole summer FOOLING around in South Africa and FAILING to cover our two MAJOR gaping holes in GK and CB, this is how he wants to show his “commitment”???
Less than 24 hrs until the season starts and City still have 36 players on their roster. What the hell are they doing? I guess the fire sale will have to wait till January… or will it happen at all? BTW, the City-Spurs match is on ESPN2 bright and early tomorrow morning! A good game to kick-off the season before we get to the real business on sunday.
City are about to sign Balotelli AND Milner …
sell off Ireland in the Milner deal… Bellamy being sold…
but they don’t have to select a 25 man squad until SEPTEMBER… not by tomorrow.
—
Chelsea to sign Ramires.
United signed a few kids this week.
Arsenal.
WENGER GONNA SIGN AN EXTENSION!!!!!
hurrrrrrrrrraaaaayyyyyyy…
that’s what we’ve been working on.
still fecking about like not a thing is wrong.
I fully expect to lose to Liverpool.
OK guys, here is the formation and starting squad for Sunday:
4-3-2-1 Alias 4-5-1/4-3-3
Why? Cesspool away needs defensive stability.
ARSENE’S LINEUP:
Almunia (SHITE)
Sagna, Koz, Vermaelen, Calamity Clchey
Eboue, Nasri, Diaby (if fit), Wilshere if Diaby is not fit
Walcott, Chamakh, Arshavin
BENCH: Wilshere/Diaby, Cesc, RVP, Nordveit, Mannone (pecking order), Frimpong, Rosicky, Gibbs
Scoreline Cesspool 3 – 2 Arsenal
After the game, dejected Arsenal travel fans will storm the team bus and pelt Wenger and Almunia with plastic beer bottles, Arsenal shirts and fish and chips. One fan will breach security and attempt to strangle Arsene with an Arsenal scarf, but will fail because the scarf is too flimsy and falls to pieces on Arsene’s “hard” head.
As a result, Arsene immediately hands in his resignation and Pat Rice is appointed as manager. Rice’s first managerial act is to sell cesc to Real Madrid, and then he re-signs Martin Keown and Tony Adams to shore up the defense. With 2 days remaining in the transfer window he sends out both Mooney and Flappianski on loan to Yeovil and Barnett respectively and re-signs Jens Lehman.
At that point, I wake up from this very vivid nightmare with cold sweat awash on my brow, immediately went to the bar and poured myself a stiff one before committing suicide :)

Arsene set to sign new deal.
“I have to show as well how much I believe in this team by showing my commitment,”.
Hilarious. He could better show his commitment by getting a number of other contracts signed, rather than his own. But, as increasingly has seemed to be the case, this speaks to his belief in his own importance above everything else.
It still might drag into the next year. Arsenal might try to haggle with Wenger over the final amount. Arsenal will do their best to get Wenger for cheap, and even maybe for free. So I believe the negotiations will take a while and might drag on past January, when Wenger will be free to talk to other clubs.
For those that have not seen the film Fight Club, stop reading because I am going to ruin it for you..now
Ofcourse, when the camera will turn back from the table, the fans will only see one person sitting at the table — Wenger. He will be negotiating with himself over his own contract. One Wenger personality will demand more, the other will demand less. And then we will see Wenger punch himself. A slap to wake him to reality and face the future and be stronger. That might be change and a stronger Wenger would emerge, like Tyler Durden who will wipe the floor with Big Sam, Ferguson, kick’em Hughes, etc.
Hah! That would be hilarious- Wenger signing himself for free. I guess it would cement his dedication to the cause- whether that ’cause’ is the club or the youth project would be up to each fan to decide (as well as deciding whether those two things are separate or one in the same.)
Interesting point. The cause also has a double personality — club, youth project. With each aspect threatening to overshadow the other.
Loved that movie
;-)
Awesome thought. But Arsene’s age, above average height and the fact that we’ve heard of him preclude his signing of himself.
That is a great point. So leads me to believe this signing won’t happen after all. Although there have been some well known signings recently such as Nasri. I think Silvestre’s age also is an exception as I think he was 78 when he signed?
Very nice post.
Every Arsenal supporter have three wishes going into this season:
-stability in goal
-depth and experience at CB
-injuries having less impact for Arsenal performances
Then we have that group of Arsenal fans that have their wish list:
-Wenger is fired, leaves, or retires
-a good number of the squad has been sold (overpaid youngsters & injury prone older players: gee, that’s everyone)
-the board takes on a new approach for building Arsenal with high priced transfers
I will not state that ‘this season’ will be the turning point for many of our young developing players – as every player has their own path of maturation. Our final position in the league standings will be less influenced by the play of our key players, but the growth and contribution from: Diaby, Ramsey, Wilshere,
Theo, Vela, Bendtner, Djourou, Gibbs, Koscielny, and goal keeper.
Despite a summer of Cesc gossip, our captain will be the professional that he has demonstrated, and continue to lead on the field.
The match at Pool on Sunday is massive, to start the season with traction. Last season’s opener at Everton proved a similar challenge. There will be even more pressure on Pool.
I see RvP and Cesc starting and a nail biting result in our favor. Go Gunners.
Off Topic:
This is a hilarious video from the Chilean 2nd Division when a Ref sends off a player and punches him out when accosted by the player.
http://www.sportpost.com/video/view/Ref+punches+player+and+causes+riot
We need Refs like that in the EPL when Chelsea and Manu plays.
Damn! That guy was packing some heat w/ the right hook… although really it looked like he didn’t hit the player that hard and the player sort of made a meal out of it. I also thought it was funny none of the players were as fast as the ref when they started chasing him.
Those players were terrible, if they couldn’t kick the Ref how the hell do they expect to kick a football :)
I am trying to contact the Ref so I can sign him up for the Olympics’ 200M dash. He has both speed and endurance.
I’ll comment on this come Saturday but Torres does not look like he is playing for Liverpool this weekend. And Mascherano looks to be gone with Poulson coming – in (who won’t start).
I am also finding it funny that Arsenal fans are up in arms about Sparky saying that Fulham don’t want to sell Schwarzer – they should know better.
Though I think Sparky is just looking for more money. They want Arsenal to pay £4 mllion
Not 4 Million.
No.
I mean, so he’s supposed to be a Number One Keeper… we can’t pay that kind of ransom.
let’s refuse, they’ll either buckle, and we can keep more of the fans money, or… we’ll go with our super keepers.
I second Nipuna in the excellent choice of picture and caption. So many other words come to mind looking at that picture and it is a picture that can sum the current Arsenal situation.
So here are some other musings on what the picture represents:
1) Motivation from the captain —
Cesc could be saying to the players: Look at this great stadium. You players should be proud to play in this stadium. This great stadium deserves great football. I played with a broken leg last year, how many of you are willing to do that? Stop being lazy and give it your all. The fans will love you for it.
2) Do it for the fans
The fans deserve it. They have showed enough patience with you and now it is your turn to repay their support and the money they have spent.
3) Negative motivation
These fans want success but we players know better. We don’t need trophies to make us feel happy. We make more money in a week than these fans make in a year. So let them cry about trophies. We can take it easy. We have to look out for ourselves. Why bother getting injured and ruining our career? There is no point running and putting in an effort. Just continue to pass sideways and sooner or later, a magical moment will arrive and we will win the game.
4) Warning to the league by addressing the camera
Cesc: Laugh all you want at our two goal-keepers who are the two worst keepers in the league. Yet, we will win games with them in net. Then we will see who has the last laugh.
As for the season preview, in the past I would have gushed over the attack but I do believe goals will be a problem especially when the other areas of the team will not function properly. I believe it has been a long time since Arsenal had a fully functional unit in all areas, so there have been games when the defense has held up but no goals came about or there was a shortage of goals. There were games where goals were not a problem but the defense leaked too much. I believe a similar set of problems will repeat, because there won’t be too many games with a 100% fit squad packed with all the best players in each position. There is so much importance on having Song fit but that does not mean he should play every game if he is fit. Which is what I think the plan might be. So if does become fit, then he may be tired out by playing 2 games every week. And then there is the problem when he is injured or when he will be deployed at CB because of a shortage in the defense.
For many years, I expected RVP to rule but I don’t believe that anymore. He has to be fit for that to happen and I can’t see that ever happening unless Van Persie retires from playing for the Dutch national team. He won’t do that, so I expect him to get injured frequently. Then there is Theo. I used to look forward for his break-out season but after 2-3 years of expecting that and seeing his decision making letting him down time and time again, I don’t expect anything of him. His pace amounts to nothing if he does not look up or know when to release the ball or when to shoot.
Nice pic, DAG.
The promised land that Cesc is pointing to is, unfortunately, Barcelona. :(
For those who are asking about Cescy poos health and can’t fathom why Arsene wouldn’t play him – he’s lying. Cesc will play. Maybe 45 minutes but he will play so will RvP.
we can only pray, because we might get played off the pitch without those 2 in the team…
I forgot to add to my report that I think the logical backup for Song is Craig Eastmond. He showed in the 4 or so games that he played that he is well suited for the DM role – especially as back up. Hell he might even be good enough to rotate him in and move Song back to his natural CB position. But those are my thoughts.
unfortunately, Craig Eastmond is NOT the player, or type of player needed at DM… for a team with actual hope of winning a trophy.
STEEL.
You know, physical prowess, strength, power, toughness.
that doesn’t = Craig Eastmond.
Nice write up DAG.
some things were funny… like Gael Clichy isn’t getting any younger!!!
he turned 25 … three weeks ago!
I know 25 is ANCIENT for the Arsenal, but he isn’t even in him prime yet!
I have to disagree with you in regard to the midfield…
we have ZERO steel in the middle… and other than Song, we have no solid DM, to shield the back 4… which is extremely necessary with
our defense… and keepers.
This area again was ignored, and the issue not addressed or attempted to be addressed by Arsene… it is not an area of strength, in my humble opinion.
Going forward… sure… half-hearted Cesc is still potent, and we
should be able to score some goals from the midfield again… but WILL THE WINGS TRACK BACK? That’s the key question.
Keeper.
Nothing needs to be said. It matters not who we choose in net
from the “current” roster… without a NO.1, we aren’t making the Top 4.
CB’s… amazed…dazed… shocked and confused.
we have let all the experience go, Wenger has said in public we need another CB… Djourou is hurt already, and we still have NOT SIGNED ANYONE.
If we go thru this “transfer window” and do NOT SIGN a KEEPER and CB…
we won’t make the Top 6… because we will surely have injuries to key players, and we won’t be able to cope… no way.
I won’t be able to watch … or comment, if we sign NOBODY before the window closes.
With a SOLID KEEPER and a SOLID experienced CB… we can possibly
be in the hunt for 3rd or 4th… with an outside chance at 2nd…
Let the games begin.
