Arsenal goes Deutsch

This week promising German midfielder Serge Gnarby signed professional terms with Arsenal this week making him the club’s fourth German player signed in the last 2 years. With the Bundesliga rivlaing Spain for young promising talent it’s only natural that the Gunners should turn their attention to the German league for talent. With that in mind we’ve enlisted the help of our good friend from twitter @GermanGunners to help us take a look the German revolution currently underway at London Colney. Specifically he takes a look at the reasons behind these recent transfers from Germany and where can it possibly take Arsenal?
Why don’ we start with the latest addition to the German contingent, the aforementioned, Gnabry. Some of you may have had the opportunity to check him out at reserve matches last season. Gnarby is an attacking midfielder which makes him a perfect fit for Arsenal. He can read a game and can be lethal with his final pass. Additionally, he has shown on more than one occasion that he’s capable of getting into the box and finishing himself. These are prime qualities a midfielder needs to have these days to be successful among Europe’s elite. At only 17 years old Serge looks set to have a great career. With his first professional contract under his belt and an increased profile based on performances, it’s expected that he will likely feature in a few of this year’s FA and Carling (or whatever it’s called these days). There is no doubt that Gnabry will also make his mark in the team.
But what is it with the Germans in recent years?
With Mertesacker, Podolski, Eisfeld and now Gnabry it seems Germany is the new France for Arsenal shopping. It’s clear, Wenger and his scouts have their gaze firmly trained on the Bundesliga – that much is for sure. The reason for that is clear to me. Germany has built an exceptional youth system which produces talent after talent. Götze, Bender, Müller, Özil etc. The benefits of this new German youth factory extend far beyond the national team. It’s effect is felt in the Bundesliga and many of the big European leagues as well.
Some years ago the Bundesliga wasn’t among Europe’s top leagues but that has changed in the last three or four years. So it’s no wonder to those in Germany that Europe’s elite from Madrid to London scour Germany scouting German players and players who are shining in the revitalized Bundesliga – like Kagawa. The talent is all there for you to see. Players coming out of Germany are players with an excellent technical ability who have mostly played on international level or used to be in the u18/20 and captain their sides. Adding to that the typical German mentality gives the players the skillsets to easily transfer into other leagues especially the Premier League. Moreso than players from Spain or Italy, players from the Bubdesliga for the most part won’t find the step up to English football not that great especially when it comes to attitude and fighting spirit. All around its a win win scenario for the player and the club.
So what can our Germans add to Arsenal’s trophy hunt in the next years? Mertesacker has been at Arsenal now for a full year and has shown that he is acclimating well and prior to his injury was steadily improving and building a strong partnership with both Vermaelen and Koscielny. He was unlucky with his injury at the end of the season. But after some difficulties at the start he got used to English game very well. MErte slowly got to what he does best and that was read play and position himself well and after that initial adjustment period was doing quite well.
Podolski is our latest addition. He’s a striker who has shown that he has the quality you need to play in the prem. His goal record for Germany is massive and just one example of his many qualities. He’s a leader and a fighter at his best. The type of player we sometimes lack at Arsenal. You won’t see him give up at any point, he continually works hard and is always fighting for it. And with his finishing he will attract attention multiple defenders which will likely create space for midfielders to get into the box and hopefully finish themselves. Comments that he has maybe lost interest in the game are wide off the mark. Rather, it’s more likely that Prince Poldi has needed a new change and challenge. When his failed time at Bayern is brought up its hard to remember who he had in front of him and his age at the time. He has matured and looks prime for his Premier League debut.
Finally, there is Thomas Eisfeld. YAMA previewed him earlier and his displays of talent were evident during the Asian tour you can see what he’s capable of. He really looks set set to grabhis chance and put himself in the spot to make a name for himself at Arsenal. He’s similar to Gnabry. His technique is superb, good final pass and a decent finish if he gets he chance. With Götze, Großkreutz etc. he was a bit unlucky not to get into Dortmund’s first team squad. Klopp had to build an experienced team to challenge for the title which made it impossible to rotate many of the younger players in the reserve squad. But Eisfeld has the qualities you need to be successful at top level without a doubt.
DAG and I have talked on a few occassions about the wealth of talent in Germany that is there for the picking. They are good, strong, extremely talented, and well suited for the rigours of the Premier League. Additionally, in terms of fees their transfer numbers for the most part are reasonable and even with Arsenal’s wage system in place they can still oat the players more than they make in Germany. It is a area ripe for picking. If Arsenal continue to mine this field I won’t be surprised if we hear Eis Eis baby a lot in the next few years.

btw, i think you forgot an important letter in the word “tschss”.
i hope arsenal sign cazorla. i would have preferred dembele as he’s already proven himself a very good player in the bpl. i also like belhanda as he’s a very aggressive player both in attack and defense. all three have a very high skill level but they’ve also got that bit of guile that aaron ramsey simply doesn’t and are more likely to create good chances and link better with the arsenal attacking players than ramsey. arsenal’s need for a clever playmaker is dire.
cazorla is more expensive than both dembele and belhanda but we can chalk that up to the fact that he’s also more experienced. i remember when he played with pires at villareal and if he can be at least that good, i’ll be excited. if i were wenger and signed cazorla, i’d tell van persie that he’s not going anywhere this off-season so get tighten your bootstraps, son, and go out and lead your team. likewise, i’d tell the media that by virtue of the fact that robin is STILL an arsenal player, it’s too late to find a player of equal quality so he’s no longer available to anyone at any price. that would be a very bold statement to anyone wanting to do business with arsenal, that they’ve learned from last off season’s mistakes so get your money right and do it early.
i would also tell theo that he needs to sign an extension by the 15th of august or he’s going on the transfer list.
signing both Cazorla and Suhin would be MASSIVE.
I would absolutely 1000% applaud the club for that type of bold move…
Sell RVP to Juventus, out of the country… or KEEP him … and the signings…
and if we can get a defender, we could actually make some noise.
SONG is rumored to be a target for BARCELONA!
(our other feeder club!)
If we sell Song, I would not really be too bothered…
I know there are people on the site that LOVE him… he’s “incredible”… and all that…. but I think he’d be a blip on the screen, if we bring in the others.
15 days til opening day.
lots to do.
@stag133,
I don’t think we’ll sell him, as Frimpong is raw and Coquelin wouldn’t be able to play a full season as no.1 in midfield and we probably wouldn’t replace Song. With Arteta in the team he doesn’t get caught out so as long as he’s in the team we should be alright. If both Sahin and Cazorla happen, and we can get some cash for Van Persie from Juve then added to Giroud and Podolski we could be set for a good season
@George, I don’t think they’ll sell him for the simple reason that he is signed for two more years. He simply doesn’t have the leverage og being in the last year of his contract. He also doesn’t have the leverage that Cesc did as the focal point of the team. I like Song and think he is a very good player, but he is not a very good DM. When Arteta is not in the team he is exposed as a player who thinks offensively instead of defensively.
Galataseray are in for Sahin (or so the rumor goes)so I’m not sure how likely it is that he will come.
Although Nuri Sahin plays for Turkey he was brought up in the German youth system also. The basis of the system was spearheaded by the current coach of the US team, Juergen Klinsmann.
It was very simple in philosophy, create and document a system based on passing, technical ability and shooting. Then, export that system by training coaches in the methodology and put it in place in Academies all throughout the country and finance them so less financially fortunate kids would gain access.
This allowed a host of french immigrants from Africa and Turkey to get opportunities which were not present before. Hence some of the names like Khedira, M’villa, Nasri, Oezil.
Simple but brilliant. Way too simple for England to do anything like that.
@Caribkid,
Ugh tell me about it, our so-called Golden Generation was a team of big players with even bigger egos. Germany is a talent factory and turns out youngsters at a greater rate than even Spain, where most of their youngsters come out of La Masia. Apart from Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hart which young English players have come out recently that will become World Class? Don’t give me the crap about Phil Jones, Danny Welbeck or any other of those overrated over-hyped tin cans. They think this St George’s park is going to sort things but its really not. The reason it won’t work is because there are so many different football philosophies, whereas in Spain or Germany they’re all geared towards playing the same way. For example you’ve got Arsenal trying to play Tiki-taka football and educate their youngsters into playing that way, but on the other hand you’ve got other teams who play hoof ball and their youth players are brought up playing that way. It means there’s no coherent identity and a clash of ideals on the pitch which is why England will never achieve glory like Germany or Spain have.
@Caribkid, Actually Kliensmann has a way overblown reputation. The youth concept wasn’t installed by him and the tactical side of the game was Juri Loews responsbility. Kliensmann was a motivator and little more. His stint at Bayern was a disaster because he coudn’t find a tactical concept and tried to reinvent football. And he didn’t manage to integrate Thomas Mueller and Badstuber who are regulars in the National Team just a year after he gets kicked. So his ability to find talent is questionable.
@Ty,
Give the man some credit. He was the one who hired Loews for the position and was the architect of the philosophy and organization.
Not saying he is a great tactician, but must give props for his organization and principles which he put into effect.
@Caribkid, Thats the thingbhe didn’t put them in effect. We (yes I say we because I am German) had a disaster in 2000 and 2004 and just got plain lucky with the matchups in 2002 and we had an ubergoalie in Kahn. After that Kliensmann gets credit for giving theteam an extremly offensive System (that was Loew) and for integrating younger players into the Team wich isn’t much of an accomplishment because the established playes stunk.
@Ty,
Again my friend I beg to differ. This type of effect doesn’t happen overnight or in a vacuum. A typical cycle of implementing a policy takes anywhere from 5-10 years depending on the available talent. Klinsmann was the architect behind the concept and recruited the best people possible to facilitate that.
I’m not German, but have closely followed world football for all of my long life and we all know that this concept initially started with Der kaiser many moons ago but was only translated into reality some 10 years back.
Let’s agree to disagree, but for me, Klinsmann has to be recognized for being an important cog in making this a reality and changing the whole way in which German football is viewed.
@Caribkid, Ok we can agree to disagree but since I followed the developement of the german national team in my “backyard” I will value my observations over yours. And the fact is that Kliensmann has a way better standing overseas than in germany. He wasn’t exactly the first choice (more like 6th) and there wasn’t a single eyebrow that wasn’t raised when Bayern hired him. And the Kaiser for all his accomplishments hasn’t to do anything with the football we see from the national team today. He basically overrelied on the established players to the extend that we weren’t competitive for a decade.
The Bundesliga was always in the Top 5 Leagues in Europe. But the Petro Dollars gave the EPL a advantage that no League could rival. La Liga isnt that great of a League its basically a 5 Team League for the last 5 years and a 2 Team Championship.
And the league in Italy has massive attendance problems.
And the youth System has ridiculous talent.
With Leno and Ter Stegen the next generation of Goalies is about to get international experiance at age 20.
The Academy of Bayern and Dortmund have produced a starter per year that is unheard of.

I’m hearing Cazorla confirmed pending medical? Is it true? Can anyone validate for sure?
Great news if true although I refuse to get overly excited until I see him holding up the shirt (memories of Mata still very raw…)
@OziKenyan, He’s not training with Malaga and has told them he wants out. Hopefully the ownership issues don’t overly complicate things. According to Goal.com, Van Persie is pleased with the attempts (whether or not they are true is another story)to sign Cazorla and get Nurhin on loan. I’ve read that the sticking point with Nuhrin is that Arsenal want a ption to buy after the loan. Would he sign a new deal if he was happy with the attempts to improve the team? No idea and I’m not sure it would be realistic anyway.
so this signing is geared towards 2014?
will he ever make an appearance? (see “Park Chu Young”)
Meanwhile, Wenger “warns” City, Chelsea and PSG about their spending!!
This guy needs a lobotomy… he’s LOST IT.
City won the league, Chelsea the CL… and PSG came as close as they have in many years…
Why would they curb spending, so Arsenal can remain close?
GET A GRIP ON REALITY Arsene.
Please.
If you are not smart enough to understand what the comments meant just stay quite instead of showing your stupidity…
Wenger knows much more about economics and was infact talking about the effects of the current financial crisis and the fact that these clubs are making it worse for everyone else…. If utd are struggling you bet so are the rest especially clubs from countries that are going bankrupt. So If you cant understand what a 10 year old can, feel free to show your inteligence the way you have.
Conclusion : Chelsea supporter maybe? If not please do us a favour and keep your pearls of wisdom for your pub mates!!!!!!
@ice, Ice.
go find a rock to crawl under… my opinion is MY OPINION. If you don’t like it, that just tough shit.
cry. pout. whatever you wish to do.
Wenger’s comments are just cries from a madman, who can’t deal with other clubs leaving ours in the dust, because he refuses to spend money on adequate replacements, and the board refuse to cut their MASSIVE profits.
United are struggling? really?
18 POINTS ahead of us… and they’ve improved their team this Summer. Haven’t sold their best player and Captain in recent memory, and have won how many trophies and titles in the last 7 trophy-less seasons we have had?
If that is struggling, sign me up.
They have more income than any team in the WORLD… and signed another great marketing/sponsership deal, with GM
so go buy a kit, a scarf, and $9 beers at the match, and keep pumping that profit into the pockets of the club.
