After a rather dull interlull combined with a server migration (and mandated facelift) we’re back with football as Arsenal head on down to Carrow Road to taken on quickly falling Norwich City.

It may be difficult to recognize the side that came into the Emirates at the end of last season and forced the Gunners into a 3-3 draw. Their manager, Paul Lambert left in the summer and was replaced by nice-guy Chris Houghton, who cannot seem to work the magic he brought to Newcastle for Norwich. When it goes wrong for this team it goes so very wrong.

The Canaries used their 4-4-1-1 effectively against Chelsea even if they came out on the negative side of things. It’s been rough going for them as they transition from the “flamboyant” style brought in by Lambert to the more traditional british style of Houghton.  Goals are at a premium for the yellow and green and keepiong them out of the back of the net also seems to be an issue as they have let in 5, 4, and 4 at various times during the season.

The battle of Holt versus Mertesacker looks to be a tasty one as Holt will look to leverage his physicality over the technical German.  Additionally, Kieran Gibbs is still out with the injury suffered during the West Ham game, so Andre Santos will start and he will have to be in form and get into the flow right away. With Santos in the squad it’s likely Podolski will coming back a lot to help provide cover on the left side.

For Arsenal the task is simple – don’t let the rust of the international break sit around on you for too long. It’s been common place for Arsenal to suffer from approaching games after the interlull with less than the required emphasis and focus. And in the past that has hurt the Gunners. The interesting thing is with this current squad, with one break down previously, the squad came back and performed solidly. They will need that as well.

There should be no attempt to overlook this opponent as has happened in the past. Doing so spells danger especially, when facing an opponent that has yet to win their first match of the season.

Vito Mannone will continue in goal and at this point is the club’s only season ‘keeper as Szczesny is still about 2 weeks away and Fabianski will have surgery on his shoulder which will likely keep him out for 3 months. Additionally, Theo Walcott and Laurent Koscielny will be absent from the squad after suffering knocks during the international break.  Walcott bruised his back and Koscielny is suffering from back pain.

Normally these types of absences would be cause for concern but that isn’t really the case at this time as, there are players, capable players available to come in and do as good or better job than the ones that are out. Koscielny has already made way to an in form Mertesacker (who scored for Germany this break) and Theo Walcott was a the constant super-sub who’s space will likely go out to Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain while Gervinho starts on the right.

There is a slight concern for Santos who hasn’t played consistently since coming back from an injury suffered last season. But before he went out, he was making a very strong case to be the full time starter at left back. Yes, its true he seems more a winger, than a defender but as he wore on, he got better and better and if he gets a run again there is hope (maybe it’s just a glimmer) that he will get there again. The good thing is, that Podolski has a good work ethic and gets back when he needs to and will provide solid cover for the Brazilian.

Still as any season will show you, anything is possible and Arsenal need to win (it’s not a must win) to keep pace with the leaders. The task looks easy and it is very hard not see a solid Arsenal win here but I would argue against overlooking any opponents.

How the Match Should Play Out:
Arsenal on the road, well we shouldn’t expect anything other than their typical style and form. They will look to take the Carrow Road crowd out of it and put the Canaries on their back heels early. Even with Walcott and Gibbs out there is enough the side to cause problems for any back four and as bad as that back four has been, Arsenal can provide a whole lot of challenges. As we mentioned previously look for Holt to try and take on Mertesacker, who while he scored for Germany was also on the field as they allowed 4 goals to bring Sweden back in for a draw. The key is how well the defense handles the pressure.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: Olivier Giroud. He has now managed to score for both club and country. If he is coming around with his scoring touch it will be interesting to see if he becomes the forward that Arsenal so desperately want him to be.

Norwich. Sebastien Bassong. It would be easy to say Holt but with as woeful as Norwich’s defense has been, with Bassong in the lineup it improves.

Probable Starting XI:

Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal:  Sagna (match fitness), Szczesny (ankle), Walcott (chest),  Koscielny (back), Diaby (thigh), Gibbs (thigh), Fabianski (ankle), Rosicky (leg),

The Final Word:

You may notice it looks a little different around here. Well, you are very observant. With our move to a new server and hosting company, there were issues with the former theme that we couldn’t fix. We tried. We spent countless hours on with tech support, chatting over skype to get it fixed and we couldn’t. Rather than kill ourselves over it, we made the decision to use a new theme. So here we are.

There is still stuff to do with this theme. We still don’t know how certain plug ins and stuff are working with the theme and certain elements of the home page are going to be worked on. You might also find that you can’t reply to a comment. You can comment on a post, but right now you can’t reply to a comment in a post. So everyone has to comment on the post for now.

Also Gameday Chat has been upgraded and we’re going to be customizing that at some point. Right now however, the key is to get it running. Just a word about that – the chat room is open and can be used during game time. But you will appear as “guest###.” To change your name to your handle – simply type “/nick  “name” The name should be what you want to be called (no quotes needed).

We ask you bare with us. We didn’t expect to have to do this facelift. But we did and now we are trying to get everything working right.

Thank you all for your understanding.  Stay Goonerish

Once again, we are closer to the bottom of the table, than we are to the top.
We will play the bottom team, QPR next weekend, and I would say its a good possibility we drop points.
Anything is possible with this team. Same as it has been for the past ?? 5, 6. 7 years?

As “disastrous” a start as Liverpool have had, they sit 3 points behind us!
Let’s sell them Theo in January… we can try and improve them, just like we have ManCity and ManU.
I just want to be fair to the rest of our “rivals”… don’t want to give any of them an unfair advantage in getting our best players.

    HTS.
I don’t want to feel vindication or joy, because the Arsenal play as bad as they did yesterday.
I feel ANGER towards the people running the club. They have f*cked this up, close to being beyond repair.
And they knowing did so. You sell off your best players over and over again, making huge comes of cash.
What do you think is going to happen? Your team is going to get weaker, and your wallets fatter.

Its a DISGRACE. My blood boils when I watch RVP playing for ManU, and leading the league in goals. Scoring and setting up goals sublimely…
and then I watch our team jog out onto the pitch and their performance is PATHETIC. Without life, or without a care in the world. Did you see anyone in the team upset after the match? Did you see anyone with a look of intensity during the match, like oh oh… we have to pick it up NOW.

The team plays like they don’t care at times… I deluded myself into thinking they had more “grit” and determination than recent teams… maybe because I wanted to? but like just about everything with the Arsenal FC these days… it is all smoke and mirrors.

    Lack of posts?
What exactly do you say after you watch that rubbish?
You can rant and fume like me… or you can go take a walk, grab some lunch, and hope the NHL ends its lockout soon!
But not much has changed in 1 year at the club, other than we sold the best striker in the league to ManU…

OK, trying to navigate and I find 2 ways to get to the comments to avoid the 30 seconds of scrolling (like I say it’s running S-L-O-W…..) Also, my post took two tries to post and you’re up to 805 spam comments blocked, so my bet is there is some frustration out there, on top of that with the team/club, of course….
On the other hand, I like that by clicking on the first “comments” label the posts read wide and as a single paragraph….Makes mine seem shorter, which MUST be a good thing. Finally, like you say, there’s an edit function, but it doesn’t (function, that is)……
Anyhow, good luck sorting it out…. Tough as it is, it’s gotta be easier than keeping Arsenal fans happy while they add to the tally of (Stealing) Stan (Kazillonaire) Kroenke….In other words, AW (for me) is just lacking a little sharpness in the spin room…..

DAG, I like the black on white….Not totally sure I can “bare” with you on the rest of it….Look, I like getting naked as much as the next guy, but the weather has turned cold and rainy here in Spain and we have no hot tub…..

As such, I opted out of the trudge to the pub, having gotten good streams for the earlier matches. Unfortunately (I think….) I couldn’t get a good one for our match so I sought out commentary. Alas, the GDC needs work and I wasn’t quite ready to duke it out with Stag, given that I more or less completely was in agreement with everything he was writing. My only question to him (deleted from the previous thread in the transition….) is why he doesn’t feel joy (or at least vindication….) at the current result….

No joy for me, but no real surprise either. Hopefully this ends any more (absurd) talk about “competing for the title.” We still look OK for fourth and we can salt away CL football in the new year with a win on Wednesday, but our league season will be a long one. Given that we have a thin squad of has-beens, late bloomers and up and comers, the international qualifiers will ALWAYS hurt us disproportionately. (Real stars fake injuries….) The idea that our guys were “coming together” or “stepping up” was hopeful (aka “wishful) thinking. Of our starting 11 only Vermaelen and Ramsey and Mannone were Arsenal players before last September and those three were coming off missed seasons due to injury or (Mannone) bench warming…..But hope (maybe) can be renewed when Wilshere, Diaby and Gibbs return (their years off somehow being A-OK)….

Further humiliations await: We have a chance for some redemption before November, but I think QPR’s (deep) squad could easily push us to the limit given our short week (and thin squad). Hopefully Everton doesn’t try and look past them today…. Early Nov. sees RVP and United come to try and underline points about the “direction of the club” which have been made in these very comments over and over again…..

Frankly, given that it’s down to just me and Stag (and the occasional old-timer and twitter-newbie….) and there’s not even a “comment” short-cut anymore, I’m thinking it could be time for me to bow out. Maybe I just cannot “bear” the negativity or the grimness of waiting for the world to change (FFP rules, oh yeah, baby….) nor the glitches in the site (brutally slow this morning)…. I have come to really dislike FC Barcelona and their ridiculously entitled fans (mirror, anyone….) but barelonafootballblog is a good model for a foreign and/or participation oriented site based on my short period perusing it….In such a model, Stag and I might have our own column….freeing up this one for less (or more) bitching….

    Enough said….(and like I mentioned I didn’t really see the match)….. Cheers…..

    no worries.
the real Arsenal show up again.
ZERO wins for Norwich going into this… blown out in previous 2 matches.

    and Arsenal SUCK today.
what a bunch of fu*king tossers.

    Absolute RUBBISH.
Going to be a long season of dross.

    f*CK OFF Wenger.

    ummm.
WTF is going on with the site now?
    The OLD site is back?

First half of utter SHIT from Arsenal.
What the hell was that? Strolling around the pitch with no sense of anything… no passion, urgency, or real effort.

Are they aware the international break is over?
Created NOTHING the entire first half. SUCKED at the back.
    Shambolic defending. Free headers again…

Where is the heart? Where is the determination?
    Are they tired?
Norwich has so many players back and in the box. Did you see how they scored? Try shooting the f’n ball, as opposed to passing it to oblivion…

The other Arsenal better show up for the 2nd half.
Norwich is going to really pack it in, up a goal.

All the other contenders won. Chelsea fight back on the road at Tottenham. United blow out Stoke. City win late playing with 10 mean for 60 minutes.

Thank you again for all the work on the “migration” to the new site, DAG.
Much appreciated. Looks really good and easy on the eyes… and we’ve dealt with glitches before. We shall overcome!

I enjoyed watching Norwich last year… they played an open style and scored (and let up) lots of goals.
As DAG noted, new manager… new style… not many goals for… he could be on the hot seat soon.
Let’s hope we help put him there today.

As usual, the early goal opens things up and allows us more room to operate… the longer it goes with Norwich in the match even… the longer they will try and park the bus and frustrate Arsenal, and try to steal points.

I’m hoping for a straight forward win, with another Giroud goal. 1-0 to the Arsenal?
And Wilshire makes the bench. Would love to see him come on for 30 minutes.

  8. stag133 20 October, 2012 at 16:02 Log in to Reply

    yes. glitch.
    my post didn’t post!
    testing testing?!

RVP is spectacular in the first half. We’d be fantastic with him in our team now.

  9. stag133 20 October, 2012 at 15:41 Log in to Reply

Yes Yes. The site looks good, and we’ve worked through issues before… so thank you for the “migration”… and all the effort it takes.

Watching our old friend Robin Van Persie, and … it still really bothers me. We regularly say, imagine if we had kept “insert name”… as well as the new recruits. And that’s the case again, because he’s that “SPECIAL PLAYER” that Wenger always talks about. Seriously. He’s f*cking fabulous. He just swung in a fantastic ball for Rooney to head into the net. Just once, I’d like to see us NOT cave into selling, eat the money, and tell the player NO, you are here until your contract ends, go play football.
    Or
At the very least, it would have been far better that I watched him scoring a sublime goal for Juventus.

    Anyway.
I used to enjoy watching Norwich last season. They played a wide open and entertaining football, and scored goals in bunches at times.
This year, as DAG noted, new manager, new style… not much success, not many goals for.

It’s a game we “should” roll in… but I could see Norwich parking the bus, and frustrating the hell out of us.
An early goal, and Norwich has to come out of its shell, and we can bang in many more. The longer it goes, the more they’ll think they can get points.

    1-0 to the Arsenal?
    Giroud with the goal?

I thought I read Wilshire is ready to play… I hope he is, and does.

  10. Caribkid 20 October, 2012 at 11:06 Log in to Reply

Good luck with your new theme and hosting company DAG. As an IT/Media person I can truly understand the trials and tribulations of application migration.

As far as the Norwich game goes, I would be surprised with anything less than 3 points although we always seem to leave it late in away games. As you mentioned, It would be good to see our French fashion model follow up on his recent performances with a few more goals.

The starting lineup basically picks itself except for the Ox/Ramsey battle. Personally would like to see the Ox in the starting lineup for this game instead of Ramsey.
