This is a dangerous match. Anyone who expects Arsenal to just walk over Southampton hasn’t watched how they took the game to both Manchester clubs. Put aside that the the visitors haven’t won away to Arsenal in their last 17 trips going back to 1987. This is a team that is well coached under manager Nigel Adkins and they will not just sit back and roll over.

Arsenal come into the match riding a run of three games without allowing a goal. Its the first time in 88 years that the Gunners have done that. And while the season is still in it’s infancy, the improvement in work ethic is easy to spot.

However, it’s the game after an international break and they first one back is always a dicey one to predict. In recent history the games after an international break have been lethargic, dangerous affairs that have had Gooners wringing their hands and biting their nails. It will be interesting to see how this lot, almost entirely new (for the most part) take the pitch after a two week hiatus.

We’re likely to not see Abou Diaby, who has been immense early, in this match. He has picked up what I think is being reported as a mild hip strain (let the doom and gloomers have at it) and is likely to be kept out for either Montpellier in the mid week or Manchester City next weekend. As Montpellier doesn’t pose much of a threat I wouldn’t be surprised if he is held out until the City match when he would be needed to go toe-to-toe with Yaya Toure.

Who Wenger will bring on in his place is debateable. Arteta has been playing the deeplying role quite effectively so you wonder if Wenger will call on Coquelin and free Arteta to play more the role Diaby has been playing – less defensive and more attacking. Or does he opt for Chamberlain to bring speed and strength in the middle. As you can see below I opt for Chamberlain.

Where the challenge is going to be is how to Arsenal handle the strong man up front in Rickie Lambert. Lambert has been an absolute beast and working his tail off against opponents. He is a handful and you wonder how Wenger and Bould will prepare their defense to play against him. I’ve put Koscielny in the defense to handle him. We lose something in the height but we gain something in speed and strength. Mertesacker’s game is positional and reading of the play. While Koscielny also plays that way he also does very good in one on one situations where you have to be strong on the ball. I like that match up more than the Mertesacker one but think we’d be fine regardless.

With Walcott likely to be sidelined due to a virus he contracted while on international duty, look for Gervinho to move to right and add cover to Jenkinson.

But the big object of the day will be Olivier Giroud. In the match against Liverpool his debutante teammates, Podolski and Cazorla opened their scoring accounts. Now with Southampton in front of him, Giroud needs to do the same. Don’t take that statement as one of impatience. If Giroud doesn’t score its not the end of the world. However, it should be noted that past Arsenal starts not only took time to score their first goal but did it against this weekends opponents Southampton. Dennis Bergkamp took 8 games to score and Henry 9. They both netted that elusive first goal against Southampton.

This is not to say that Giroud will go to the heights of Henry or Bergkamp. No, but Southampton who’s defense has already allowed 8 goals in 3 games, is a perfect opportunity for the Frenchman. And its not as if he has been poor. His movement is so good.  He is strong in the air. He hasn’t connected the final product yet and a lot what I see seems to be someone who a.) is trying hard  and b.) is still trying to figure out how to work with his teammates. But it will come. I am not sure Giroud has had the likes of Cazorla, Arteta and Poldi to work with. While Cazorla and Poldi have seemingly gelled to expect that it will happen with Giroud as quickly is preposterous to think. Players need time.

And for Giroud, I believe as I have since we signed him, that when it comes, it will come in spades.

How the Match will play out:
I don’t expect Southampton to change their style much. As highlighted by Michael Cox on the dot com site, the Saints will come in with either a 4-1-4-1/4-3-3. And they aren’t prone to sitting back. Arsenal will have a team in who wants to play along with them. With quality on the wings Arsenal will have to be careful and as good as Jenkinson and Gibbs have been, support from Podolski and whomever deputizes for Theo, is necessary. However, With the creative nature of Arsenal and how well Cazorla has been, if given time and space the Gunners will get their opportunities. The Saint’s defense has already allowed the most shots on goal this season. Arsenal are getting their shots and chances even against teams that have sat back and absorbed their attack. With plenty of shots and lots of back and forth I see a game that is open and fun to watch. However, given that Southampton have been scoring, I do think that the clean sheet run is over.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal: Olivier Giroud. Now is the time for the leading scorer in Ligue 1 to open his account. Perfect chance to do it.

Southampton: Rickie Lambert.  I won’t say that he terrorized defenses in the last three weeks but he has been a handful.

Projected Starting XI:

Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal:  Rosicky (achilles) Sagna (leg) Frimpong (knee) Wilshere (foot) Diaby (doubtful – hip) Walcott (doubtful – virus)

Southampton : Cork (doubtful – ankle)

Leading Scorers:
Arsenal: Podolski 1, Cazorla 1

Southampton: Lambert 2

Assists:
Arsenal:  Cazorla 1, Podolski 1

Southampton: Lambert 1, Lallana 1, Puncheon 1

    Thanks to Stag for giving me a little more impression of the match….I’ll try to lay off (sarcastic) comments about all your “other” teams….

    Speaking of which, one of them is coming to Spain to take on “in crisis” Madrid (and pouty Cristiano) while (whilst?) we play Ollie’s old squad. Personally I expect City to try and shut down shop and it could be a very slow one until somebody gets a goal. In front of their own fans I expect that goal to come from a Madrillen(y)o but if it happens to be el Kun, hostilities could be worse than (even) in OUR stadium….

    But that’s our opponent’s match and we should focus on our own. How much rotation should we expect and do we go to Southern France looking for a nil-nil or come out all guns? One would think that we might slot in Kos for the BFG and maybe Santos for Gibbs. Like I said, I couldn’t see much on my stream the other day, but we seem to be almost playing a 3-4-3 with Gibbs being so far forward as to be part of the 4 if not the (front) 3. By contrast, Jenks seems not to be so intense about getting as far up his side of the pitch and seems focused on defensive positioning even if crosses are probably his strongest suit. Notably, since the start of the campaign, he seems to rotate back (and central) whenever the ball is on the left.

    In attack, I would expect Giroud to start and be a focal point, with a stack of Santi and Arteta behind him, given that the two Spaniards seem to be the beating heart of the team. How long can they play on and on and on, I wonder, and I don’t even want to contemplate what might transpire if one (or, god forbid, both) weren’t available.

    A true optimist might say, “no worries, mate” given that Wilshere is to start training today and Abou Diaby’s rest was just a precaution (and Gervinho is firing) VAD2 (Diaby) should come back into the lineup given that he’s France’s flavor of the month but I would hope he only plays an hour. Reports say that another French boy, Le Coq, tired on Saturday. One would guess that we’ll set up for defense against City, so does that mean he rests at Montpellier? Interesting that he got the nod ahead of Ramsey, who seemed to perk things up for us after he was subbed on. And on the wings?….

    Anyhow, the team sheets for these next two seem to be anybody’s guess, but nonetheless extremely important as results seem (tantalizingly) within our grasp given the walkover the other day….. Obviously, not a whole lot can be taken from that one. We’ll know more soon enough….

      @highburyterracesteve, Montpellier is playing poorly right now, so I would hope and expect us to have a go at them, trying to WIN the match.

      City, are going to come and have a go at us, with 1/4 of their team ex-Gunners!!

      We will have our hands full with City… Montpellier, not so much.
      Oui?

        @stag133, Si (I’m in Spain)….
        so we’re not quite speaking the same language….(yet?)….

        Both matches are in the opposing stadium, so draws are
        perfectly acceptable, but yes, we would hope for more, esp. in
        Southern France….

    Watched the first episode of the “Liverpool” series, that is on Fox Soccer, (and also NESN, owned the the Red Sox and Liverpool)…
    Very good… inside look at the workings of a major football club…
    Liverpool’s manager Rodgers, isn’t’ even a big name in managing, and his house is utterly RIDICULOUS!

    Look forward to future episodes… was very interesting when they played at Fenway Park, and met the “struggling” Red Sox… (similarities, most definitely)…
    and the Sox players were going over their schedule, telling the footballers that they have 2 to 4 days off PER MONTH!!

    it was a dominant display…
    we moved the ball around the pitch beautifully… and I would imagine this is what Wenger visions, when he draws it up in his crazy mind…

    Good movement on and off the ball, very good passing display… and a team who has to be begging for a few mid to lower table teams to play in Southampton.

    I just figured that they had leaked in far too many goals, and that if we could get the pitch tipped at home, they’d have no answers defensively.
    That was the case… we were all over them from start to finish.

    The only hiccup was Sneezy’s blunder that cost us a goal…
    but he barely had anything to do all day, so maybe he was trying to stay awake.

    2 more games this week… should be confident against a Montpellier team that hasn’t started well in the season after their title.

    there you go.
    you will NEVER find a better prediction than that…
    6-1.
    If I wagered on the 6-1 score, I’d have a fortune.
    :)

      @stag133,

      Nice one mate. Except the Giroud bit, but hardly your fault he didn’t start

    • highburyterracesteve 15 September, 2012 at 21:06 Log in to Reply

      @stag133, Gots to give props to the Stagster!!

      And ManU did the business too, even if RVP didn’t get in on the scoring,
      while QPR held Chelsea and won the handshakes (or something)…. I guess
      City only getting a draw at Stoke has to be seen as a dissappointment….

      For those supporting the Arsenal my hope is that the GDC was good fun and
      that nobody missed me. In fact, we had to set up our own slow-as-hell
      stream in the pub and actually had (serious) streaming problems and missed
      the first two goals….Good fun and Paddy promises TV for us in midweek….
      And at least there are no problems with our ten year old in the bar…..

      From what I was able to see it all looked fairly dominant and fairly
      fortunate (two own goals vs the Sneezy giveaway)….Overall, we looked
      pacy and controlled and the match was over early. Not much of a real test,
      in truth….Sometimes the clubs that just want to stay up have to take one
      on the chin, as Wigan also did at United, despite a promising first fifty
      minutes….

      Anyhow, given that I didn’t really “see” the match I’d love to hear some
      impressions from people who did, but maybe we no longer try that sort of
      thing….

      Good result, at least. CL on Tuesday, (much) tougher one next Sunday…..

    Hopefully Sz starts. Mannone may have gotten 2 clean sheets but he did not fill me with confidence

      Fail!

    Hey, No offense to kiwi (last thread)….Didn’t you see my winky face? (I spelled it out, actually)…..

    Looking forward to this one and it’s actually kinda rough having to wait for most of the day to see the match. I’ll carry the ‘puter to an Irish pub I’ve read about, but we’ll see if I can be my usual self in the GDC if there are any other Gooners about….

    Yes, a big test for the defense, though I think maybe the bigger change would be Sneezy in for Don Vito, who is at least predictable in staying on his line (except, of course, last season in Greece). Given the pecking order, I would think Ramsey might come in centrally for Diaby with the Ox on the right. Also, perhaps, Lulu (Poldolski) could play up front with Gervinho on the left. Who knows? My guess is that the manager has a plan (of sorts) for the entire week.

    Stag says 6-1? Is this a double down on the sarcasm or a real scoreline? Personally I’ll just take three points however they come, with maybe a special wish for a goal from a corner (for us, of course….) where frankly, I believe, we look much improved, maybe due to the Steve Bould influence.

    Go On….

      @highburyterracesteve,

      Seems we have similar thoughts on the expected changes

    • Caribkid 15 September, 2012 at 11:57 Log in to Reply

      @highburyterracesteve,

      Agree with the squad makeup for most part. Only possible surprise could be seeing Le Coq in for Diaby since both Ramsey and the OX each played two games during the international break.

      Gervinho is fresh and therefore should certainly start regardless of whomever is up front. Heading to the local Pub myself with my son for a few early brews and a hearty English brunch.

      3-1 to the Arse with Giroud firing in one and providing an assist :)

    It still remains a tough decision as to whether AW will make changes at the back, considering the fact that we’ve kept thre clean sheets with the same back line! Only time will tell. Will go for 3:0 in our favour with Giroud scoring his personal first goal. Follow me on twitter @compore #teamfollowback

    • OziKenyan 15 September, 2012 at 06:33 Log in to Reply

      @Compore,

      True on the changes part. If I had to guess, I’d say we’ll see 9 of the 11 that started against Pool with Ramsey in for Diaby and Sz in for Mannone

    • Caribkid 15 September, 2012 at 12:02 Log in to Reply

      @Compore,

      We have 3 games in 7 days so I can easily see both Koz and BFG getting starting duties at some point. Koz, being fresher, could get the nod today but either one should be able to do the job. Arsene needs to start doing some squad rotation so we can keep our players fresh the entire season.

  8. stag133 14 September, 2012 at 16:30 Log in to Reply

    Reality is, Southampton was up a goal late against City, and United… and should have taken a point at least against both!
    They are dangerous, but its a game ARSENAL should win…

    hopefully its an entertaining match…

    I’m going for 6-1 Arsenal, with Giroud scoring 3.
