EPL Match Day 4: Arsenal v Bolton, Match Preview

We're Back

Ladies and gentlemen we now return you to our regularly scheduled football proceedings. Thank goodness the injurelull is over (that’s not my term but I love it.) After two weeks of excruciating boredom and pain, Arsenal FC take to the pitch again to mount a continued assault on Silveware Hill.  And boy is it a big hill to climb.

Coming to the Emirates this weekend are Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers. Bolton are much improved side under Coyle. Like Wenger, Coyle espouses a free flowing attacking style of football and he is slowly trying to bring that to his new club. His approach has paid off evidently as the new look Wanderers are undefeated having drawn 2 and winning emphatically against West Ham.

Bolton will be under some serious pressure to win at the Emirates as they have not won a match away to Arsenal since 1962.  Given their newfound style though, they could be good enough to pip a point if Arsenal aren’t diligent. Attacking Swede Johan Elmander leads the attack for the squad and is their lead scorer. However, he does tend to be a bit inconsistent in his form and was replaced by Kevin Davies who got the equalizer against Birmingham last match day.

Either of those scorers will have a hard time as it has been 8 hours and 1o minutes since Burnley’s David Nugent last put a goal in the net at the Emirates. That is a run of 8 matches at home without conceding a goal. For a team that is supposed to be weak at the back that is pretty impressive by anyone’s standards.

But what would any Arsenal season be without injuries. And keeping at least on thing consistent to form the Gunners come into the match losing two strikers and a defence man. Thomas Vermaelen is out for one match with a slight ankle injury. That is until the Gunners medical staff get a hold of him – so stay tuned on that one. Far more disturbing is the injuries to Walcott and Van Persie. Walcott rolled his ankle in the recent England Switzerland match up. Form the initial look at it we should feel lucky its 4-6 weeks and not a season. It didn’t look good when it happened.  As for Van Persie, the injury he sustained in the first half of the Blackburn match went from being a slight injury to one keeping him out for 6 weeks. Both players are set for an October 15 return (or thereabouts).

On some level you have to feel sorry for everyone involved. Wenger must be scratching his head and wondering if he needs to bring in a shaman to break the injury jinx at the club. Van Persie and Walcott came in with the mental preparedness that had you hoping they were going to achieve great things. Van Persie a slow starter never got to the gear we know he can get to, though he should some flashes. Walcott was simply on fire. Now both face a challenge to regain that frame of mind and get over the injury and do something for the remainder of the season.

The attack though isn’t likely to suffer – much. When you have Arshavin, Rosicky, Fabregas, Nasri, Wilshere and new boy Chamakh you do still have a lot of options.  The key though I think will be everyone’s focus on our defence. With the injury to Vermaelen, recently signed Sebastien Squillacci gets the call to start. With his inclusion in the lineup the entire back four will be french. That could be a first in the EPL. It will be very interesting to see how he reacts to his first game without a proven pro next to him. Remember his partner only has 2 games of EPL experience so this could be interesting. I suspect that Song could sit back and provide added cover for the pair.

And finally, with the transfer window firmly shut, Manuel Almunia gets at least until January to prove he belongs as the club’s number one. He needs to come out and play with the same verve and emphasis that he did against Blackburn. The Manuel Almunia of that match was the same one that challenged mad Jens for his spot. When he plays like that he is good. Maybe not on the level of Van der Saar, Cech, or Hart but on the next rung. Then again the Manuel Almunia of last season, is a few rungs further down. How he reacts remain to be seen. The eternal optimist in mehopes he understands what’s at stake and decides to take the challenge and do something with it. Again, that remains to be seen because he can also shrivel up like a shrinking violet.

Either way, with everything going on this match looks to present some unique situations for our club.

How the Match Should Play Out:
Even with Bolton much improved and our widening array of injuries, I still think we present too much for Bolton. I think there is even a stronger case for a pressing Arsenal attack if Bolton try to play a flowing game. Next to Barcelona, Arsenal play this game in that style as well as anyone most teams choose not to play them in that style for fear of being shredded. This could likely be the case for this match. Look for a strong attack and look for Cesc Fabregas to assert his continued ascension to stardom.

Players to Watch:
Arsenal: There are too many to watch in this game. Let’s go with new kid on the block Sebastien Squillaci. With the injury to Vermaelen, he gets the nod and makes his awaited EPL debut.

Bolton: With Jussi Jaaskelainen sitting because of a suspension, Bolton turn to Adam Bogdan gets his first EPL match start. So its a new guy watch week.

Probable Starting XI:
Injuries and Suspensions:
Arsenal: Vermaelen (achilles) Walcott (ankle) Van Persie (ankle) Ramsey (ankle) Bendtner (groin) Frimpong (knee)

Bolton: Klasnic (thigh) Davis (knee) Jaaskelainen (suspended)

It was an amazing evening + night of sporting action.

All the stuff I watched had favorable results except one.

    Everton held ManU.
    Arsenal won.
Dortmund beat Wolfsburg (McLaren pointless after three games).
    Bremen held Bayern.
    Hercules beat Barca.
Real Mad beat Osasuna (typical M(d)our style).
Cesena beat Milan (Ibra missing a penalty).

Chelsea will lose at some point in time. Question is whether Arsenal can keep winning. Lack of clean sheets is a concern. If we can improve on that, it will be the difference between 1st and 3rd.

    • Fred 12 September, 2010 at 04:02 Log in to Reply

Yeah, loved the Hercules result. Infact, they are the direct equivalent of Blackpool in England.

Trezeguet is my boy, so am probably going to be watching their games.

Nelson Vadez was the man. Liked him at Dortmund and he also played quite well for Paraguay in the WC.

4-1. Fair result I thought considering number of chances, although at 2-1 it looked like it could head either way. Some weird reffing decisions- Cahill should’ve been yellow (but i have to see it again), RObinson should’ve been deffo red, Arshavin should have been allowed advantage to go through on goal

Chamakh’s movement continues to impress me personally, particularly the way he opens up space for his striker partners. An Anfield Arshavin would’ve had a hat-trick today. Cesc and Sicky with some sublime passing and that 3rd goal was class (although most of the pretty passing was going nowhere).

In other news, who is this Arsenal Red Cloud, and how dare you try and catch up?

Guys, in French there is no Q sound, so Seb’s name is pronounced with a K sound, with the U silent, and an H sound after the C as in “Skillachi” … this shares the same pronunciation as its direct Italian equivalent eg. Salvatore “Toto” Schillaci (top scorer of Italia 90).

My point, The Squeal is a poor choice of nickname for Seb. It not only has cowardly/weak connotations in English, it is also the wrong pronunciation.

    • vibe4arsenal 12 September, 2010 at 01:26 Log in to Reply

Ya. It is a bit “You got a real pretty mouth, boy” for a football nickname.

      Makes even ‘Fab’ sound butch.

      • Kiwi 12 September, 2010 at 05:37 Log in to Reply

No worries, I appreciate the french lesson (seriously), I’m not into nicknames. So hopefully he’ll prove the cowardly/weak connotations are inappropriate. ;-)

So guys – I’ve been promising something and here it is:

The long awaited 1st Anniversary YAMA T Shirt.

I don’t have a vendor yet to produce them so no prices. I hope to get that sorted out tonight.

    Tell me what you think.

I didn’t bother getting up in the middle of the night.
    How did The Squeal go?

I read Diaby took another rough tackle – that’s a shame. His demise seems to coincide with that first really bad tackle some years ago.

    • DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 20:57 Log in to Reply

It was pretty harsh. Robinson should’ve been gone more than Cahill was.

No word on length of injury – (guess we should start at the requisite 6 weeks).

Squeal did alright. Given Koosh’s propensity to make a mistake that leads up to a goal, I am beginning to wonder if the ideal tandem will be TV5 and Squeal.

      • Kiwi 11 September, 2010 at 22:47 Log in to Reply

        Thanks Mike.

You might be right on the better partnership although I guess we’ve got to let both players settle for 10 games or so. After that we should have a sense of how well they each cope with the rigours.

  6. DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 15:30 Log in to Reply

What a near perfect day –

    1. Arsenal win
    2. United draw (v Everton)
    3. Spurs draw (v WBA)
    4. City draw (v Blackburn)
    5. Barcelona lose (v Hercules – karma is a bitch ain’t it?)
    6. My son scored his first goal

Had Chavs dropped points it would’ve been perfect.

Some more injury news though –
Diaby is going to be gone for a while, Wenger says he is having trouble moving his leg.

And Bobby Zamora – did you guys see that? He is out for 4 months? And Luka Modric could also be out for a long while for Spurs.

    The injury bug is spreading.

  7. macmac123 11 September, 2010 at 13:54 Log in to Reply

Well, that was a full meal. A bit of everything. Goals, drama, glaring injustice with the red card and then no red card for Robinson’s tackle, and the obligatory soft goal we give away to keep things interesting.

Cesc makes all the difference to the midfield. Chamakh scores another meat and potato header, which begs the question what extra can Bendtner bring to the relationship when he returns.

Arshavin needs to regain his killer edge, especially when Song is the one charging in to show you how it’s done! And the CBs need to get more settled, but otherwise feel tough enough for the slog ahead. Overall, pretty encouraging, I’d say.

Until you see the Chelsea machine steamroll another win.

  8. nipuna 11 September, 2010 at 13:42 Log in to Reply

    Three assists for Cesc today.

  9. vibe4arsenal 11 September, 2010 at 12:45 Log in to Reply

Fabregas straight poisoned that ball to Vela. Anyone still think he’ll be bringing the team down the season?

Barca can have his heart, as long as we’ve got his head in the game.

Starting XI: Almunia, Eboue, Squillaci, Koscielny, Gibbs, Rosicky, Song, Wilshere, Arshavin, Fabregas, Chamakh

Subs: Fabianski, Diaby, Sagna, Nasri, Vela, Denilson, Clichy

  12. HighburyterraceSteve 11 September, 2010 at 09:53 Log in to Reply

Good preview there, but nobody sees Eboue slotting in today? For some reason I see a starting 11 of:

    Mooney
    Sagna-LK6-Squill-Clichy
    Eboue-Song-Diaby
    Cesc-Arshavin
    Chamakh

Vidic puts United ahead in the 48th with his head from Nani….Bad for Arsenal, good for my fantasy squad (my dream is to stay above the relegation places….)

  13. DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 09:28 Log in to Reply

Evra tries to do a scissor kick on defence and gets schooled. VDS makes a great initial save but can’t save Pienaar’s shot. Everton up 1-0 before the half.

Fletcher goes in untouched (thank god we didn’t sign Jagielka) and draws United even.

The goal was Heitinga’s mistake. Ball watching like Clichy. ;)

  14. arsesession 11 September, 2010 at 08:51 Log in to Reply

For clubs like Arsenal, managers have to face the reality that they will rarely field their ideal lineup. Just look at all of the competitions outside the usual league matches: CL, Euro, ACN, WC, Friendlies. Then there is no winter break. Also, some injuries are miss-diagonosed, prolonging recovery; not exclusive to Arsenal.

The match today is a preview to this year’s roster’s depth, spotlighting our summer acquisitions.

I’d prefer the lineup that DAG has proposed, but with our manager there are always surprises.

  15. DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 08:46 Log in to Reply

Just a quick couple of notes:

    1. SAF keeps Rooney out of the MUFC squad because of the stick Rooney gets at Goodison Park. (Seriously)

    2. Amending my score prediction to 3-1. If Arsenal score 3 more goals that will be their 1000 under Arsene Wenger

    • OziKenyan 11 September, 2010 at 09:06 Log in to Reply

Sound logic on changing the prediction eh DAG? Heh.. I wonder if anyone else has picked up on that fact. In fact, where did you get that stat from?

Rooney dropped… HAHAHA. But on the other hand, Everton are doing an Arsenal and playing without a striker. Comonnn CahilL!!

      • DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 09:24 Log in to Reply

I got it from some stats feed on Twitter.

    • DaAdminGooner 11 September, 2010 at 09:24 Log in to Reply

The thing about Rooney’s exclusion do you remember Wenger ever leaving Sol out of the lineup when we played at White Heart Lane?

Come on. Get over it. Fergie is starting to get soft in his old age.

      • vibe4arsenal 11 September, 2010 at 11:57 Log in to Reply

Extenuating circumstances mean that Rooney may not be in the right frame of mind this particular week. I blame Fergie only for not inventing an injury better than hurt feelings.

I think your line-ups gonna be spot on. My prediction: Arsenal 3- Bolton 2. I can see Davies having a field day. I’m happy that it’s a home game anyway. Looking forward to it.

Here’s an, interesting read regarding injuries. For once I’m not overly disappointed with our latest storm, seeing as it’s no longer a surprise with us. I’m not sure what I make of the article. I think we just have more injury prone players. But have a look:

    http://www.therealarsenal.com/?p=79

Then there’s that link on Arseblogger about the guy who’s advocating Roids. Interesting concept.

Think it might a close one as well.

Would prefer Vela starting ahead of Chamakh. Haven’t been overly impressed with Chamakh in terms of being a spearhead. Bit of a blunt blade.

      • OziKenyan 11 September, 2010 at 09:08 Log in to Reply

True, dunno how well Vela would do as the tip of our attack though. Chamakh’s finishing seems to be lacking at the moment, but I’ve been happy with his movement. Esp, his interchanging with Arshavin and Theo. All in all I’m happy he’s here. We’re one injury away from playing Arshavin as our point of attack!
