FA Cup Fifth Round: Arsenal v Leyton Orient: Match Preview

If there was ever an anti-climatic moment – it is this one. Comingoff the heels of an epic win against Barcelona, Arsenal head on over to Brisbane Road to take on Leyton Orient.
This marks the second time in a row that Arsenal have been pitted aqainst a League 1 side. The last round daw them drawn against Huddersfield Town. Orient are slightly worse off than the possibly promotable Huddersfield as they sit 11th in the League 1 table.
For Arsenal look for their to be many changes from the side that took on Barcelona. There are a lot of matches coming up in a small time frame. From the mid week tie against Stoke to next weekend’s Carling Cup final against Birmingham. The Gunners are in all four of their competitions and it is adding up to some fixutre congestion. So that means the likes of Van Persie, Walcott, Cesc, Song and a few others will likely sit on the bench or out entirely.
Still, there should be enought quality to come in and move the side through to the next round. Here is the thing though, since 2005, our last Fa Cup title, the Gunners have only progressed through to the next round once – that was two seasons ago when we played Chelsea at Wembley in the Semis.
The “Second” team of Arsenal need to show what they can do. Those players that do play need to seize the moment they are being given and need to show that they deserve to wear the kit of the club . The club is on the cuspt of something I feel it, but it needs all its players to show they can come along for the ride. As we have seen this season, the second set of players has been less than stellar and have usually required on oe fht efirst teamers to come on in 60th minute to save them
This has to be the moment where that can’t happen. Chamakh, Bendtner and others all have the talent to play this game. They need to step on to the pitch and show their own quality. My opinion is that certain players will be gone this year if they don’t THere are players currently out on loan that are having great spells with their loan clubs. Like Henri Lansbury, who doesn’t seeem to be stopping his ability to score for Norwich. Or Japanaese wunderkid Ryo Miyaichi, who scored the opener for Feynoord. Ryo has been at the Dutch club that gave us Van Persie for just over a monmth and is already building a cult like following with his skill on the ball.
The point is these players and more are going to come back into the fold this summer and the likes of Denilson, Rosicky, Bendtner and even the hero fo Wednesday night, Andrei Arshavin are going to have to show they should stay. With new policies on club size and financials coming into play, I get the feeling the Gunners will keep their first team in tact and trying build their depth through the right components in the reserves.
It really is a juggling act keeping all these players happy and content. Wenger must balance the need to rotate his squad with the obvious desire to win. I tghink he knows that epic switches to the squad * or more changes) usually result in a flat side. The squad usually out play their opponent but their chemsitry is not there because the team doesn’t play as a unit that often together. The first team are coming together because they are enjoying an unprecendented run of health and form. That has made it easy for them to grow. The second team , well they’ve bee slotting in as late match replacements and coming together as s quad when the FA Cup or earlier Carling Cup stages come around.
I’m not making it as an excuse. There is a lot of talent even in the second team and frankly, it has to use it and move away from depending on the likes of Fabregas or Nasri to come rescue them. THat being said, I won’t be surprised to see Nasri play to keep getting back into tmatch shape ahead. He is freshest
The final point on this, it is certainly a wacky year. First since 2005 winning season, more often than not we’ve drawn EPL sides at this stage. The opponents side of fielding strong regular squads versus our mix of youth and reserves usually meant we would go home after this. That policy has changed somewhat as stronger teams, less youthful ones have been fielded. Also we are not drawing big clubs we are drawing minnows. And then finally, look at what is going on around us, CHelsea, the cup holder fopr the last two seasons, epically collapses against Everton and is out of the cup. Then United draw non-league Crawly Town and need the wood work to preserve a draw. Fergie fielded an all bench warmers from the first team side. SImply point, I’ve never seen so many things set up right for the Arsenal. It surely is their moment to grasp the bull by the horns.
Winning begets a confident mentality. And sure enough, there is a solid mentality around the club, given the recent results – undefeated in their last nine matches in all competitions (8W 1D), they are the only EPL club up for all four competitions, and their last way loss was 12 January against Ipswich town. All in all thre is enough there to keep everyone confident int he abilities of the club. IT is now up to the players that Wenger picks to not lose focus after the Barca match and bear down on Leyton Orient to take the match and move on.

Two things –
If you haven’t been to the Wallpaper section in a while I have quite a few new ones in there. I have a series actually going right now.
And, our injury list is officially down to three players – Vermaelen, Fabianski and Frimpong (yes, I’ve probably just jinxed the team).
When was the last time, that we had 3 people on our injury list?
@DaAdminGooner, Yes, well, nobody wants to jinx the team, which maybe explains the relatively reasonable response to the disappointing result from Sunday….
CL football starts up again today and Chelsea and United both have (seemingly) straightforward matches, although the former is in (fairly spectacular) free-fall and the latter has some of the same 2nd team issues that we do and a couple of fresh injuries to go with the lingering ones (Anderson, Giggs, Rio). Crawley town were at least as close to earning (an away) replay as Orient was….And at least our bench boys get another chance to put things right…..
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but the worst part of these CL matches, I think, is that they make for delayed TV coverage of our match tomorrow vs Stoke (here in the States at least)…..
And it’s a big one (4 points back, we must take all three), and it’ll be curious how we rotate the squad given the Cup final at the weekend. Early news is that VP and Kos are “injured” but could make the squad for Wembley. (Squill the thrill to pair with DJ, but maybe not so antsy with Sneezy between the sticks? And Bendy or Makh the horse get another chance to lead the line?….) Of course, maybe some of the would-be managers here have some better ideas…..
“The best thing for us is that it was 1-0 because Arsène isn’t going to put on any of his main line-up that’s on the bench. He’s trying to nick it. He’s trying to get away and let these blokes have a little rest. Now if we equalise in the 70th minute, the floodgates open and on comes [Cesc] Fabregas and all of them and we’re in desperate trouble.
“What he has done is he’s got a little bit complacent, the old Frenchman, and the other Frenchman [Téhoué] put the boot in. That’s why this bloke [Slade] sends him on and says don’t score too early. And once again Wenger has been out-thought by a better brain.”
______________________________
The Orient Chairman’s comments in the first paragraph are 100% accurate imo, the second paragraph is poetic licence, but overall the message is true. We tried to ‘nick it’ and got caught out.
@ HTS: Nothing shocking about Denilson missing a tackle and failing to protect the defense. He has been doing that for over 3 years now. The guy is more incompetent at his job than Almunia at his!
The guy cant even dominate a bunch of random League one players, what hope is there for “real” competition. Ah well.
—————————–
The following Super Six players: Rosicky, Denilson, Diaby, Eboue, Almunia, Squillaci – need to be thrown out in the summer – the exact same way one dumps an old TV on the sidewalk. Let another club have them …. for FREE. It would be grossly unfair and borderline immoral to actually sell those players.
Chamakh and Bendy can be sold … but for no more than 3 million each.
@Fred,
You’d be lucky to see 2 of those players leave AFC in the summer. Wenger believes in continuity and the long-run. As it stands, I could see Rosicky leave (but I could just as easily see him stay – after all why would Wenger make him leave when we’ve finally got him on the pitch after 3 years of injury?), Eboue is back-up RB and a utility (in Wenger’s mind) so he’s staying, Almunia will likely go, Squillaci has just come and is a back-up CB – he’s staying, Chamakh has only come (on a free) he’s staying, Denilson, Diaby and Bendtner are all long-time favourites of Wenger (entering their prime years) and will only go if they aggitate for a move.
So, Almunia most likely to go, Rosicky may go if a good opportunity comes along, DDB – only if they aggitate.
@Fred, Looking at the team on sunday, I had a feeling that players who desperately need to be shipped out were on perfect display. Diaby and Eboue were missing from that lineup but if they were there, then it truly would have been a perfect lineup for Arsenal’s version of Expendables :)
If it was any other manager in charge, I would have guessed the lineup was meant to give an idea who should be sold. But as Kiwi points out, such wholesale changes won’t happen. Some of these changes are way overdue and would really help ease up the payroll and make room for some worthy replacements.
Agree with everything that’s been said, but I want to add that I like Nacho Mike (Ignasi Miquel)…. Played just fine though he and Gibbs both hesitated when a fouling tackle was called for on TAAAAHHHHBBOOOEEEE (for the goal)…..(The real problem was further upfield as Denilson missed ANOTHER tackle….)
And I also like the ballsy (petulant? challenging?) attitude of AW to let that 11 sink or swim (i.e., no subs). I would play this exact same 11 (but maybe sub Diaby for Song and Eboue for Sagna) and see if they can beat Orient at home, if not, all we miss is another humiliation at OT where they might have to play again, depending on how the first team does elsewhere….The B group NEEDS the match and the Barca result (and today’s) is a gauntlet begging this group to PICK IT UP!….
Longer term you’re looking at bigger problems, of course, and we’ve got some people we need to ship out or whose contracts should be voided (for lack of fulfillment…..) Arsh and Makh have done their dike fingering work, but not too much lately, Andrey’s goal on Weds notwithstanding…. And some of the younger boys (Bendy, Denilson) who we’ve stuck by (and older ones….Tomas, Manny….) are becoming tiresome in the extreme.
But, as Kiwi and Sachin point out, let’s see how the cards fall over the next few weeks and how many babies need to go and with what quantity of bath water….
I am actually thankful we are still in the competition.
I turned on my stream and the first picture than comes thru was that of Almunia’s face … the very next frame had Denilshit’s mug in it. I knew it was going to be a shitty day. Its been awhile we have had the displeasure of weekend mornings with the horrid duo.
True to form, Almunia made sure he fumbled the very first ball he receives to ENSURE Squillaci and Miquel were suitably rattled! LOL.
Anyway, the result was no biggie. I imagine the exact same team will take to the pitch for the replay, so more games for this lot.
@Fred, a lot of these same players might rock up for the Stoke game….. so you might see a repeat line-up at The Emirates in a few days!!
After all, it’s hard to see Wenger playing a lot of his Final starters just a few days before the big match against a team of bruisers, surely not?
I could see the same line-up with perhaps; Walcott, Fabregas and Clichy and one centreback (Kos or Djourou) getting a run. But with Walcott & Fabregas being subbed.
To be honest, once I saw the team sheet I had ‘realistic’ expectations. Whilst I’m not an apologist for the B-team I think it fair to acknowledge that fielding an almost wholly new starting line-up is going to sacrifice the familiarity and interplay that we rely a lot on. The second aspect is the striking trio – this needs balance – and the inclusion of Chamakh and Bendtner doesn’t give that imo.
If we’d held on and got the 1-0 win it would have been ok, job done. Unfortunately we didn’t. I’m as confident as I can be that we’ll eliminate them at The Emirates. The issue is having another game – it’s a bit unnecessary – although that’s how cups are.
My interest is in who Wenger will pick for the Stoke match knowing that the League Cup Final is on Sunday.
@Kiwi, This line-up should MOP THE FLOOR with a team 52 places below us.
They don’t belong on the pitch with them.
It was about EFFORT and sadly, in this case, interest…
Bendtner on more than one occasion avoided any contact with the opposing team. Does that inspire you with confidence that he should be in the first team? or playing in Spain, where contact is a lot less. I think he should go away…
@stag133, I hear you Stag, and the lethargic performances from some are frustrating, but not new.
That said, you’ve followed football long enough to know that cup ties against lowly opposition away on their ground in winter are notorious for being uninviting and ‘tricky’. This was one of those and we fielded our B-team – so it’s not a total surprise and the main thing is we are in it and should finish them off in the return match.
The more interesting point to contemplate is the quarter final against Manchester United. Potentially we’re both going for ‘the double’, whoever gets through keeps that dream alive. Of the big boys only Manchester City remains in the competition. So, like the League Cup, if we get past United we’re in with a real shot. Can we beat Manchester United? Can we lay another ghost to rest? If we had our A-team available I reckon we’d give them a proper contest. Bring it on.
In three weeks time we could:
a. have won our first trophy for over 5 years
b. have knocked out the worlds glamour club from the CL
c. be through to the semi’s of the FA Cup and have a real shot at another cup
d. still be in contention for the EPL title
or……..
licking our wounds.
@Kiwi, yes so much could indeed happen in the next few weeks. Like you said, beating Man Utd in the F.A Cup would lay another ghost to rest. I still remember the 2003 F.A win there and it was tough to get that result but it was sweet victory coming in the same season when the team’s 55 game scoring streak was halted with a 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
For once, anything but licking the wounds option would be more than welcome :) Long overdue need for glory of any sort.
@sachin, I agree Sachin, can’t wait for the Final. Just hope we are celebrating!!! Brum aren’t flash, but when you look at their squad they’ve got experience and a few solid names, thing with finals is that everyone grows legs everyone plays out of their skin, the game will take on its own persona, it will ebb and flo and if we don’t take our chances we’ll let them think they have a chance. And they will have.
1-1. Happy for Orient, they deserved it. Because wow. Just how lethargic can our B team get?
Almunia’s first touch was a fumble… And it just got more abject from there. We were so lacking in bite and drive, it was insulting. No leadership in mifield. No battling spirit.
Chamakh needs a trip to a head shrink. Bendtner needs to lose the entitled prince routine. Our movement off the ball and the overlap was like a Zoloft ad.
Arshavin at least was prodding away, but Rosicky no longer looks up for seizing his chance and picking up the Nasri-Cesc baton. Denilson was averageness personified. The most forward driving midfielder we had was Song!
The CBs were fine because they weren’t exactly put under any real pressure until the one inevitable mix-up that gave Orient a well-taken goal.
Once again, it proves we have a first 11 that is gelling nicely, and er, nobody else.
ahhhhhhh yes.
The Arsenal.
The joys of being a fan.
Beat the Best Team in the World on Wednesday.
Play a team 52 places below you on Sunday, and draw 1-1.
Just a SHIT performance… going thru the motions.
But whatever.
It’s another match that we don’t need to be playing, because these 2nd teamers showed they either don’t think they should be the once playing against Leyton Orient, they don’t care enough, or they aren’t good enough…
We’ll beat them at home, and move on to play United.
Unless Wenger wants to throw the FA Cup, like he has done previously…
Though he did say he thinks we can win the Quad.
Never able to get too high or too low with the Arsenal.

When Wenger was scouting Chamakh did it not dawn on him that he’s got about the worst shooting technique in the history of football?
I would take Chris Kiwomya and Kaba Diawara over him at this point.
Huge alarm bells rang in my head when a sift through his scoring ‘exploits’ revealed hardly any regulation type smooth finishes with his right foot. It was all headers and scrappy tap ins. It seems Youtube has for once accurately tagged a player.
Massive liability having him as a striking option down the stretch. All his earlier goals had ‘novelty value’ written all over them. Well the novelty has worn out.
And just like that, another extra game. Delight for Orient but what will that extra game mean for Arsenal? The extra game will come on the heels of the Carling Cup final and before a home game against Sunderland. Fatigue….
Well fuck. Arsenal would beat Barcelona then draw with Leyton Orient. And it would just have to be a last-minute goal, wouldn’t it?
I know Wenger and the players read this blog at half-time, so maybe my comments will inspire them…
Bendtner. SUCKS.
He is playing like he feels like he’s too good to be on the pitch in this match. Get a grip kid… you aren’t that good, and you are playing like SHIT, as usual.
Chamakh. WTF?
Really? do you have Mono? Why are U playing like you are sleep-walking? I know you have played a LOT of matches early in the season and done well… but are you THAT tired?
Rosicky. HELLO?
What is the point of Tomas?
HASN’T SCORED in OVER A YEAR.
This season. 19 matches. 0 GOALS – 1 ASSIST.
That is f-cking PATHETIC.
How much does this guy make to produce NOTHING.
It’s Leyton Orient.
Really guys. I understand a let-down after Barca.
But get the goal(s)… and be down with it.
Enough of the shitty football where it looks like you are half-trying, and in Bendtner’s case, just trying not to get injured.

@stag133, well stag you have proved that they do indeed read this blog :) Thanks for helping out. Bendtner and Rosicky combining to score but I guess Chamakh didnt get the RSS feed of this blog on his account. But maybe you need to have more of these halftime blog talks.
Going to be tough today especially since Arsenal are playing with only 9 men against Orient’s 13. I hope in the second half Orient will let two of their extra players Chamakh and Bendtner play for Arsenal just to even up with the numbers.
for a change it would have been nice to get an F.A Cup tie at home to Man Utd instead of away again but that would be asking too much. Still, must win today’s away tie first before thinking ahead..
Surely a tasty away tie at ManUre will fire up the troops to have this game wrapped up by halftime. 3-1 Gooners.
Am I the only one who’s never heard of Ignasi Miquel?
The Draw for the quarters is in….And whoever wins today, takes on United at OT….Lordy….
Bring ’em on, I say, still believing that we need matches (and wins) against United to get to the promised land (and out of our Desert Wandering years)…..
That said, it might be nice to either win or lose, as another match is probably not needed….
FA Cup Final on March 12th this year.
MAN UTD home against ARSENAL (or Orient!)
@stag133,
Goddamnit… why, why, WHY does it have to be away? That 4-0 beating we took 3 years ago in the Cup was also at OT. Winning there is nearly impossible, partially b/c Man U/SAF are very very good at home, and b/c of the refs are very good to them. I guess the good thing is that IF we were to win that game (and this one, obviously) there would be no one left in the Cup of our quality.
This does not inspire any confidence in today’s match:
Almunia; Sagna, Squllaci, Miquel, Gibbs; Rosicky (c), Song, Denilson; Bendtner, Chamakh, Arshavin
Miquel, Squillaci and Almunia making up the hear of defence. Just great. Well after this one we might be in only three competitions.
@DaAdminGooner,
Subs:
fab, koscielny, nasri, wilshere, clichy, eboue, szczesny
@DaAdminGooner, DAG.
For once, I’m with Wenger on this line-up.
Our players have WAY MORE than enough talent to beat this opponent like a DRUM.
If these players starting… can’t be Orient today… then its NOT Wenger’s fault, its theirs.
They should SMASH them about 4-1.
@DaAdminGooner, Looking forward to seeing Ignasi Miquel, “the new Pique,” as I’ve heard him called….(Hopefully not as horsefaced as that one….)
Just lump it up to the big boys with little Andrey buzzing around ready to poach….Hoping Rosicky can work in tandem with Song to create a little menace to go with whatever possession we might have….
Man City come out with low energy and just survive an onslaught from Notts Country….
Slowly they come into the match, esp. at corners, and now that’s how they’ve taken the advantage after 37 mins….Silva (real quality) delivering to Vieira…..
Still sitting in the GDC if anybody cares to talk footy while waiting for our match….
Edit to add: And another for Paddy!!! (From another corner….ManCity sure to go through now….but now Tevez gets on for groggy Balotelli, so much for using these matches to blood the youngsters or get playing time for those who might need it….)
Vela comes on in 70th minute – scores in 2nd minute of injury time to salvage 1-1 tie.
The worst thing that could happen to Carlito was a change in managers. HOdgson wouldn’t know how to develop a youngster like him
@DaAdminGooner, 70th minute, still a goal down, no Vela in sight, which was one of the reasons I got up early to watch the bottom-of -the-table 6 pointer….
Edited to say:
Vela came on in the 73rd and showed (IMO) superior quality. It looked to be too little, too late given that the only half decent teammates (Fortune and Odemwinge) were exhausted. Still in the 92nd min, Vela put in the equalizer (with his right foot) after Hennessey failed to hold onto a weakish shot from outside the box.
Maybe Carlos isn’t fit enough to start the matches (hard to tell with the slimming vertical stripes of the WBA kit….) and the poor pitch doesn’t favor him, but hopefully he’ll get more opportunities to help West Brom stay up. A big point for them today and an even bigger 2 points to snatch away from Wolves at the death…..
Very good write up DAG and I’m really hoping that we can do enough to get through (avoiding a replay) and maybe not have to bring on our marquee players to save the day. Some starters from Wednesday will have to play and I’d expect them to be (maybe) Song, Nasri and Koscielny. Orient have put out statements that they will play with a bit more English commitment (intent to maim?) than Barca did….Maybe a good lead-in to the next (must win) matches against the leg breakers (Stoke, Brum)….
The point about Loanees is a good one. Personally, I’m upset about the managerial change at West Brom and today in the Black Country Derby, Carlitos Vela is not playing. Now that they’re a goal down Hodgson may need to bring our boy in. What’s the point of loaning players out if they don’t get pitch time?
Back to today’s match….Given Orient’s poor pitch we’ll probably try and play more directly and a few set pieces might give our big boys a chance to stake us to an early lead. If those guys could show some solid hold-up play maybe we could play a lot of the match in Orient’s half.
One thing I have noticed is that our established central MF starters, Cesc, Song and Wilshere, all have a tremendous ability to scan the pitch while running onto well weighted balls. By comparison the subs (Denilson, Rosicky and Diaby) don’t do this and don’t play balls of this sort for the others. As such, the mid-field play is much, much less attacking in nature and puts more pressure on the defense and creates far fewer forward moves. To a certain extent these guys (esp. Denilson) have had their chances (and another today, surely) and I look forward to some of the loanees and other younger players (Frimpong, who else?) getting their chances in the near future. As others have pointed out, we are short in this part of the pitch and can afford no injuries or performance drop-offs.
Enough said. Hopefully the carry on from Weds is pride in the shirt that translates to a solid, dominating performance and a good win today.
