If I were the Arsenal manager

Last year we took a look a close look at who our starting XI would be for the season. We used the current in and outs of the club to review and discuss what the best lineup for Arsenal was. As the year went on, for the most part our optimal XI panned out. On the pitch, the team of Szczesny, Sagna, Clichy, Djourou, Koscielny Fabregas, Wilshere, Song, Walcott, Nasri and RvP showed that when the cared enough – they could beat anyone.

Sure that lineup had some tweaks. I don’t think anyone could foresee the long term injury to Vermaelen or that Wilshere would emerge so quickly. Anyway, the year is gone. There are a slew of whole new issues and the likelihood of comings and goings persists. So I thought it was time to explore what I would do with the team if I were manager.

But I am going to do it a little hamstrung and give my self the following challenge –

  • I am going to assume that the club has sold Nasri and Fabregas and because of the timing, suitable replacements could not be had and the team has to be made up of available players.

Woo hoo – I am up for it.

The Defence

This is the most maligned part of our club. And as of today our starters on MY team are going to be – Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny, and Gibbs/Traore.  I am not sure who to start at LB. Gibbs has pace and is good on tackles. The problem I am having with Gibbs at the moment is that he is showing his inexperience this offseason by being caught out of position and letting attacks develop from the left. He got exploited all match against Cologne.

In goal I am starting with Szczesny. While he is still young, he is confident and he takes charge at the back. One of the things we have been lacking in both Almunia and Fabianski is a vocal leader who isn’t afraid to dictate to defenders. Goal keepers in my opinion need to be demonstrative. They need a presence and they need to be absolutely vocal.  These are things Szczesny has in abubance. In addition he is confident in the air, his ball distribution is quick and for the most part he makes good decisions (there was that Brum thing but we’ve moved on).

Overall though, I think what needs improvement is the idea of total team defence. Not just leaving to the 5 guys who sit behind the line. Defence has to to start with every single player, even the offencive minded. To me, the system we need should employ a pressing style defence that attacks the player with the ball with one or two players immediately going to the ball. Barcelona have perfected this. They simply seem to not be able to stand it if they don’t have the ball. When they lose it they converge on the player who has it and force an error to get it back. We need that style ALL the time.

When we did this last year, we did it with effect. Ask Chelsea. The goals that resulted in the 3-1 drubbing at the Emirates were because we played a dogged defence chasing down every ball and forcing errors up and down the pitch. Two of the goals were direct results of mistakes made because of the pressure. That style of pressure also allowed us to eke out 1-0 win against United at the Emirates because we simply did not allow the Mancs to play their game.

The problem that exists is that we didn’t do it enough through the season. We figured that against lesser teams, we didn’t need to do that  because we would have the ball forever. The problem here  is that some teams found that when they had the ball the could score on us with efficiency. I think we can combat long balls over the top first, by attacking the man the ball and not giving him the time to tee up the long shot.

Secondly, to address the long balls over the top, I want to work on the high line. While against teams who “will play with us” this is fine. It is not good against teams that are going to lump the ball forward. With Koscielny and Vermaelen in the back we have two defenders who are good at bringing the ball up from the back and distributing  it where need be. However, what I want to do is see one of them sit back more when the ball is down in the opposing end, just for the odd chance that the ball gets lofted forward to a lone striker. What I noticed last season is that we get positionally turned around with our high line which makes defending a streaking striker hard to defend – just ask Darren Bent in that last game against Villa.

I’m not a tactical genius but I do think the way you combat this is that only 3 of defenders are so far up the pitch and one of the CBs sits back and for me that is Koscielny. While not a beast in the air he is very good positionally and reads the play well. From a slightly back position, he hopefully would be able to see a play develop – especially a long ball and react to it.

Finally set pieces. Honestly, I don’t know anything that can improve the set pieces except to be more aggressive on them and learn to stay on the man you are set to mark.  Too many times our players let opposing players roam in the box freely on set pieces, giving them free reign to get to the ball and have shots on goal. And by aggressive I don’t mean overly, enough to make sure that any player who isn’t wearing your kit  doesn’t roam freely in the box.

The midfield

I have two options I want to explore with a Cesc-less and Nasri-less midfield. The first is to continue the nurtured partnership of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey – along with Alex Song as the DM. Ramsey and Wilshere are showing real promise as a tandem that can command the midfield and set our forwards free.

Wilshere has shown himself to be a bright young talent with an eye for a good pass and soft touch but that  hides his physical strength , grit, and ability to get the ball back and pester opposing players. He simply is the next great English star and we should nuture that.

Aaron Ramsey is showing no ill effects of his devestating ankle injury. He is showing quite the opposite – that he wants to make up for lost time and get back to the place he was before Shawcross took him out. He is already showing that promise and has consistently been a bright spot with energy and ability that is only matched by his midfield partner.

Lest we forget these two lads played with each other in the reserve set up. They know each other well and are familiar with the others style of play and that cannot be underestimated.

Alex Song while not everyone’s first choice is a solid DM and will hopefully only go on and continue to improve. Again, we shouldn’t read too much into the pre-season but he has been one of the better players this summer and it looks like he is developing a nice support partnership to Ramsey and Wilshere.

But the one thing I might tinker here – again assuming the squad is the squad we have today without Cesc or Nasri, I might consider bringing Andrei Arshavin back to his natural  creative midfielder role and see what he can to unlock some of those tricky defences we encounter.  It’s a thought right? I mean if there were anyone in the team ready made to replace Cesc Fabregas (to an extent that he can be replaced) it’s Andreivich isn’t it?

The Forwards

Using my primary formation of 4-3-3, I would lineup Gervinho on the left and Walcott on the right with Robin van Persie as our middle man. With Van Persie’s penchant of sitting back a little and playing deep he might be able to feed the speedsters from the side.  Additionally, his scoring rate will (provided he stays healthy) only get better with service in from two players like Gervinho and Walcott.

Walcott has really impressed me with his ability to set up the goal. He is using his speed well now to get behind players and his passing has been deft enough set up some of our more natural goal scorers.

Gervinho and Walcott together also gives speed on both wings which in turn keeps opposing teams defences honest. With speed on either wing, defenders with a penchant for getting forward to support an attack would be hard pressed to do so if they knew they could get beat by a speedy forward.

The Formation

As I insinuated, my base formation is a 4-3-3. Especially for like minded attack oriented teams. But in the case of teams that want to  flood 10 me behind the ball I am switching to a 4-4-2. No change in the defending line. My midfield though becomes, Arshavin, Ramsey in the more attacking roles and Song and Wilshere in the DM roles. Up front, I am likely to go with Van Persie and Gervinho up front. Rotating that front tandem with Walcott and Chamakh.

Subs:

Mannone is my number 2. While not as commanding a presence as Szczesny he is better in the box than the other two options available.

Jenkinson is my RB sub. He has shown good presence on the ball. Is good defencively and is HUGE.

Djourou is my back up CB just because his name is not Squillaci.

Depending on whether Ramsey or Arshavin starts the other is my midfield sub

Lansbury is my other midfield sub

Chamakh is my forward sub

There you go. Yeah, I know I am no tactical wiz. I am just looking at a what if situation and trying to make the most of it.  This was not an exercise on whether or not we could win the league with this team. It was what do I do with what I have to get the best possible results. When I look at it, its not great but if its all we got, this is still a better lineup than most teams in the league and I think could do a job on the contenders. Whether or not they could win the league. That would depend on so many different factors and that wasn’t the purpose of this discussion.

Oh and finally – if I was the manager – I’d be buying Cahill and Sakho for the defence. Mata and M’Villa for the midfield and Benzema for up front.  Again, that’s if I were manager and could do it!!!

    Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying…..

    Biggest story of the day is that Joey Barton is stubbing out his cigar in the eye of Newcastle, tweeting about how crap his club is and otherwise burning his last bridge over the River Tyne…..And, according to Ladbrokes, we’re front runners to sign him(!!!)

    The sad thing is that if Cesc and Nasri go (and I believe the former will and the latter should) Barton would be an instant impact player for us. Right footed set pieces are his bread and butter and I think he’d actually flourish on a team like ours. I doubt management feels desperate enough to countenance a character of his ilk, but counting on Rosicky and Ramsey staying healthy AND producing seems an act of almost similar desperation……

    obviously its NOT the players the fans are BOOING.

    They are simply voicing their disenchantment with the CLUB.

    UTTER SHITE Summer, in which we INCREASED ticket prices, already the highest in the land… were sold more shite … with new kits… and that we will bolster the squad, that there is money available …. the board wants Wenger to spend… Wenger will bring in needed quality… the ARSENAL WEBSITE posts “transfer gossip”… and here we are 13 days from the start of new season, and the club has pissed away almost the entire Summer, and we’re worse off than we were at the end of last year… with 2 of our best players in LIMBO… no defender coming in… one STARTER going out…
    Booing at the stadium after 2 blown matches is MILD… there should be a fecking UPROAR… there should be ANGER… and the fans are the ones being screwed.

    There are NO POSITIVES… NONE… Wilshire injured, Walcott injured… Cesc not playing at all… Nasri won’t sign because we won’t improve the team…

    There is nobody that can spin this into anything positive.
    and the doomsayers have been right on the money ALL ALONG…

    13 days for Arsene and his merry board to SORT THIS MESS OUT.

    CB coming in…
    Sort out the Cesc/Nasri BS…
    If they go, IN COMES WHOM?

    I still say we need a LB, CB, DM, Creative Mid, and a Winger.
    That would be 5 in… and Cesc/Nasri OUT…

    Since it takes ENTIRE SUMMERS for us to do business…
    we’re in deep do do.

      @stag133, he’d add grit to a team sorely lacking it… not sure if he’s “Arsenal quality”! and he goes against everything Wenger stands for… what does he stand for? Foreign finesse players using Arsenal as a stepping stone to greater things?
      not sure any more.
      (thumbs down)

    Nothing to add here….(Very reasonable comments all around) except, perhaps, welcome to August, a pivotal month for the club…..

    I’ve already prognosticated some dire scenarios for the month so I won’t go there again. Having watched the matches on the weekend I will say that I feel bad for some decent young players (and older ones too) being thrust into a situation where expectations (in line with ticket prices) are TOO HIGH. Until the club moves into a different financial mode with injections of quality in all areas, the most we (as fans) can hope for is a little stream of players who come, perform decently, and then move onwards and upwards towards bigger rewards (big paychecks, trophies and spots on national teams, for example)….

    As always (being somewhat of a naive fool), I’ll hope for the best while expecting what my rational mind sees: the middling results of an uninspired team of individuals using Arsenal as a platform for (at best) professionally moving forward in other realms and (at worst) playing (or watching….) a child’s game while cashing those millionaire paychecks….

    Sorry to be so negative…..But I have to agree with CK below that EVERYBODY knows that this Arsenal squad (without Divine intervention) simply cannot begin to compete for the bigger trophies. This morning, even our most famous teenager, (currently injured….) usually super-loyal, Jack Wilshere, is calling for Arsenal to bolster…..

    If I were to dig (deep) for positives I would say that we are exceptionally well-positioned to make that leap into the future (Usmanov money waiting in the wings, rabid fans clamoring for change, etc.) but I fear we will have to go lower before we go higher….

    (And this is the part that is particularly galling: Why should decent, earnest players, trying their best amidst the boos, bear the brunt when it’s really the current owner–and his minions–holding out for the last possible pound of value…..)

    I just looked up some definitions of August…… 1. Inspiring awe or admiration; majestic: 2. Venerable for reasons of age or high rank.

    Sorry (and I hope I’m wrong), but by the end of the month I fear Arsenal will not come close to meeting them…..

    If the fans are booing now, I wonder what the reaction will be when we struggle in the CL qualifier or get knocked in the early league games (which is very likely).

    The team could get into free fall mode.

    It is really sad.

    Watching Man U’s tour, their new players already look like they have been at Man U for YEARS!

    All their new players have already taken part in a FULL pre-season of several months with the team and they are well-bedded.

    It is incredible how unspectacular but well-oiled their machine is. They are just sitting back waiting to snag a Nasri/Sneijder type player, but they dont really need one to win the EPL. So they just want one for the luxury. That is how comfortable they are.

  8. Fred 31 July, 2011 at 23:55 Log in to Reply

    Pathetic display as usual. Nothing to comment on really.

    A lot of AKBs love to say (hilariously) that our players will be better since they are one year older! LOL.

    Well, it turns out Djourou and Squillaci are actually gonna be much WORSE this year than last. Even with Vermaelen returning we might turn out WORSE in defense than last season if that is at all possible.

    The worst part is that our problem is now so well known and advertised that EVERY single team will be bombarding our weak spot!

    That is what happens when you let a problem fester.

    This team (without Fabregas or Nasri) is a 7th place team.

    And if RvP should get injured playing for Holland in early September, then we are looking at falling into the bottom half of the table.

  9. Caribkid 31 July, 2011 at 21:33 Log in to Reply

    Arsenal is teetering on a very pivotal axis at this moment with a slight leaning towards the dismal.

    Basically what we have is a manager and Board who doesn’t give a shit what the fans think because they are making money and even with considerable churn are still selling out seats. On the other hand, we have a large and increasing base of disgruntled fans who are at total odds with the club’s ambitions.

    Regardless of which side of the coin we are on, outside of Arsene, no one believes we can win anything taking this particular course, including the players.

    Probably the most counter productive thing we could do as a fan is to boo our players, especially with it being such a young team. Playing at home with such a hostile crowd will do nothing except plunge us into a downward spiral where our only rewards will be attempting to beat Spurs in the London Derby since we will be no longer in the CL.

    Unless Arsene realizes his “plot” is doomed for failure and listen to the pleas of the plebeian masses, including Martin Keown, his plot will disintegrate into chaos this season and there will be no winners for anyone attached to Arsenal. The only winners will be our competitors.

    Until we:
    1. Stop buying unfulfilled potential
    2. Start buying world class experienced players
    3. Hire Keown, or someone like him, as a defensive coach
    4. Start teaching defensive organization
    5. Start buying a few players with leadership qualities
    6. Buy clinical finishers
    7. Stop making a joke of the Captain’s arm band
    8. Sack Wenger and hire Robert Martinez

    WE ARE DOOMED TO FAILURE

    We will just end up being a another Ajax or Leeds and Arsene will be off to Lorient where he can convince them to believe in his vision and start another youth programme to justify his failures at Monaco and Arsenal.

    It’s about this point where I wish I was not an Arsenal fan.

    • Fred 31 July, 2011 at 22:10 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid,

      Yeah, this weekend the captain’s armband rotated between Van Perse and Nasri (!!!!!!!). Two worst choices possible.

      Plus, it is not really the fans fault they boo. It is just out of pent up long term frustration. Not their fault at all. They play very good money for their seats.

    Every off-season hums a familiar tune with Arsenal under Wenger. An end-of-season assertion that strong action will follow, the masses say “give him a chance”, followed by little or nothing inwards with one or two stars scratching at the door to escape, followed by an underwhelming squad flecked through with fragility.

    So here we are again. What an enormous joke. How many believers are still hanging on grimly with whitened knucles? How long til kick off? Less than 2 weeks, and the fruits of our efforts are an Ivorian attacker from the French league that typically few had heard of til now. The major stories have been Fabregas and Nasri wanting to escape the listing sinking ship. We aren’t even playing Fabregas (so the die looks rolled), and the options around Nasri look like heads we lose or tails we lose. We force him to stay for an underwhelming last season and lose 20m+ in transfer fees, or we flog him off now (why not sell him at the start?).

    In the Emirates Cup we display in the brilliant light of summer our glass jaw, that inability to convert enough chances combined with that ever-present tendency to choke when ahead. Forget the “it’s only the preseason” line, you know we do this throughout the season. Remember the Carling Cup?

    Jeering at the Emirates Cup – ouch!! That’ll help seal the departures of the disaffected twosome. Better buy the team some ear plugs. Of course Wenger will wholly fail to see that it’s his cummulative actions that have resulted in the crowd turning.

    • Mazza 31 July, 2011 at 19:47 Log in to Reply

      @Kiwi,

      The thing is, all those who simply play it down due to it being pre-season (none other than Wenger himself), are forgetting that we often display our best football of the season in the Emirates Cup. The most enjoyable match from the 2009/10 season was the 3-0 win over Glasgow Rangers in this very same tournament – seriously- and as you said, we know he we cope when there is something really at stake…..

      We look completely shot to me. Everyone looks unsure(even more so than usual). Too many indians and not enough chiefs is the saying that comes to mind.

      Wenger himself continues his decline into absurdity with a mixture of delusion, defiance, and indifference, all rolled into one very odd touchline persona, in which every expression in some way seems to acknowlege our deficiencies, but at the same time appear oblivious as well. If that makes sense.

      • Kiwi 31 July, 2011 at 20:20 Log in to Reply

        @Mazza,
        Agreed, we love the sun on our back with the low intensity of the preseason fixtures. Not surprising I guess given our style is more akin to Spanish or South American in pace.
        Alas, we can’t even excel in preseason anymore….

        When I run down the squad list I think 5th or 6th is more our space. The question is, if as the season progresses we sit around 5th or 6th what level of mental toughness has this team got to stay the distance when the relative glamour of 4th looks remote and unlikely? So 5th or 6th could rather easily result in a slide even further – if you get my drift.

        Ultimately I think it’s unavoidable, we HAVE to hit a wall. You simply can’t sustain an illusion of challenging when the evidence of your actions prove you aren’t. So this season might see Rome finally burn.

        A quick squad health check:

        Leadership: captain wants out and hasn’t played at all

        Star quality: Fab and Nasri both want out. RvP isn’t fit enough. When’s the last time we have been so utterly starless?

        Attack: RvP isn’t fit enough to build it around so that is a baseline weakness. Nasri is off either way. Who else inspires?

        Midfield: Fab is the midfield. Too much will now fall on Wilshere in the same manner Fabregas was overloaded.

        GK & Defence: Seriously, collectively it’s bottom-half EPL level.

    I’ll start off this season like I’ve started every one for the past four years.

    WENGER OUT!

    Now I’ve got that out of the way, lets get onto the details of the match and how wonderful irreplaceable Arsene has set about changing our fortunes so that we enjoy a prosperous season.

    Let’ see, erm….erm… erm, Gervinho, erm…… erm…..

    The most hilarious part was seeing Frimpong – on several occasions passing to a guy on the wing then running around the recipient of the ball on the overlap! All this with most of our players on the attack.

    Ofcourse on several of those occasions the move broke down and the ONLY DM at the club was closer to the corner flag, while the opposition sauntered freely through our midfield.

    Even freaking Frimpong figures he is an AM too. An absolute nobody plucked from Randomville, Africa is too good to just sit down and play DM. That is the retarded setup we have going on in Wenger’s dreamland.

      @Fred,

      What’s up with that Africa shit Fred, especially since the kid was plucked from London, England, where he was born.

      Time to cut out that type of rhetoric dude. Absolutely not necessary on this forum.

      Do you truly think a kid is going to do that on his own. That’ s how he is being taught in order to perpetuate the concept of total football. Ever since Gilberto was banished all of our DM’s having been playing in that manner.

      BTW neither Flamini nor Denilson are African.

      If you are going to blame anyone you need to look else where.

        @Caribkid,

        Please explain to me what is wrong with what I said.

        Were you also upset when I and others have alluded to Wenger plucking random 12 yr old kids from a village in Turkmenistan or from a 7 yr old from a random village in Bolivia?

        For the record, Frimpong was born in Africa. So I am accurate on all counts.

        PS: I don’t recall Denilshit playing in that manner. He was the polar opposite of adventurous.

      @Fred,

      Fred, Frimpong is from London

      • Fred 30 July, 2011 at 19:14 Log in to Reply

        @DaAdminGooner,

        His wikipedia (which admittedly is not always accurate) says he was born in Ghana (which last time I checked was in Africa). He also plays for Ghana.

        PS: His wikipedia is lying point-blank that he is a 6 footer! They guy is not taller than Fabregas!

        • DaAdminGooner 30 July, 2011 at 19:27

          @Fred,

          First I would never believe anything that is written on Wikipedia or take it as gospel.

          Frimpong is listed on ESPN as 1.8 metres or 72″ or 6 foot.

          He was born in Ghana, is a naturalized English citizen, played for England in the U17 level but decided to play for Ghana. He was plucked out of London not Ghana.

        • Fred 30 July, 2011 at 19:41

          @DaAdminGooner,

          If he joined Arsenal at age 9, he might have joined straight after getting into the country.

          Either way, my point remains, a random kid, like the legion Wenger loves, who are absolute nobodies in the game, yet feel too big to just do their job in a simple, straightforward manner.

          Whether it is Wenger’s plan or the player’s initiative, the ONLY DM overlapping forward (when everybody else is upfront) is incredibly moronic.

        • DaAdminGooner 30 July, 2011 at 19:45

          @Fred,

          When was the last time we had a DM who stayed put – Gilberto?

        • Fred 30 July, 2011 at 19:50

          @DaAdminGooner,

          And we haven’t come close to winning squat since then.

          The “overlapping DM” … another retarded idea from Wenger (to go with his mobile CB idea) that is a certified failure.

          Not even Barca have a “roaming DM”.

        • DaAdminGooner 30 July, 2011 at 19:33

          @Fred,

          To prove my point on Wiki pedia Frimpong is now listed as 11 ft tall

    Another day, same old shite. CB pairings playing square so 1 pass takes out both, poor tackling and positioning from both JD and Squid. Defensively, the MF also guilty of the same thing except for Wilshere.

    What all that amounts to is a total lack of defensive coaching. The very basic elements of organization, shape and rotation is a dead art at the Emirates. Regardless of who we bring in lack of defensive organization will always come back to bite us, just not as often.

    On the good side, Gervinho is for real and is much more of a direct threat than Nasri. Sell Nasri now and go get Mata and we are instantly a better team offensively.

    Both Jenkinson and Traore put in good shifts and if he keeps improving, Jenks will be a monster in a couple of years. At 1.5 M has to be a steal in comparison to Jones and Henderson at 17+.

    Chamakh looks like a piece of driftwood on the pitch, absolutely static and totally clueless. Can’t figure out what has happened to the dude, too much Fish & Chips maybe.

    • HighburyTerraceSteve 30 July, 2011 at 17:27 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid, Nothing much to add, except that Ramsey in possession in our half continues to be frightening and, in fact, led to the 1st Boca goal…..How long, also, before Jenkinson gets tired of throwing in dangerous crosses to non-existent targets…..

      Martin Keown’s post match comments were telling (and you can tell he is hurting watching his Arsenal)…..They were all about the lack of correct positioning and how the defenders are simply unable to assume responsibility in an adequate manner. It’s not down to the players, he said, but rather the system and needing time to gel as a unit. Much, of course, was made of the zonal marking at set pieces by the game announcer….

      Highlights for me were Gervinho and Koscielny, whose playmaking ability rather than height will make him a fixture at CB, well ahead of Djourou. In the end I think Boca may actually have had the better chances and it is worrisome that our goals were scored from a counter and a quick run from the 2nd half kick-off. We really had very few periods of sustained possession where we looked dangerous. The need for another capable defender and someone to challenge/replace the (at best) somnambulant “creativity” of Arshavin and Nasri, not to mention Cesc, seems more pressing than ever…..

      • Caribkid 30 July, 2011 at 18:47 Log in to Reply

        @HighburyTerraceSteve,

        Almost certain it was Squid and not Ramsey who gave up possession for that 1st goal.

        • DaAdminGooner 30 July, 2011 at 18:57

          @Caribkid,

          The pairing of Squillaci and Djourou are deadly. It looks like Djourour has taken the prospect of another CB and a fit Vermaelen as an excuse to fall apart this summer.

          I have not seen him have one decent performance this summer. Complete regression so far.

          Nasri seriously look like he was making a mockery of being on the pitch today. Cesc was making a mockery of being in the stands.

      • Fred 30 July, 2011 at 19:18 Log in to Reply

        @HighburyTerraceSteve,

        Re: Jenkinson crosses.

        This is exactly why I have NEVER liked RvP in the middle. He just is not the guy a club like us (playing in the EPL) should be using as the center forward.

        Soon Jenkinson will completely stop crossing. And maybe even forget how to cross. And in tight matches we will continue doing what we have been doing in the last 6 years. F&/k all.

  15. Fred 30 July, 2011 at 14:51 Log in to Reply

    Had absolutely nothing doing today, so I reluctantly sat down to watch the match. Huge mistake, as it only served to shoot up my blood pressure.

    Even in the “good” first half, it was completely clear that the team has not changed in ANY way whatsoever – tactics, mentality, etc. Gervinho is a bit of fresh air though.

    Chamakh is still a lazy and pointless git. RvP despite his goal doesn’t attack the box enough. Our midfield is still a circle jerk. Our wingplay and allround attack play is still completely RANDOM. Our central defense is still completely hopeless and ofcourse a two goal lead is nowhere near enough for this team.

    And the opponents were a non-physical, sleep, South American team on break, who did not make one single cross ALL game.

    Sigh.

    Anybody know anything about TV coverage for the Emirates Cup? I thought it was supposed to be on ESPN…..

    In addition to seeing various players in action I was hoping to gauge the mood of the home support. If the internet is a reflection of how things are going, my suspicion is that we will not have much, if any, home field advantage this season making things all the more difficult.

    Regarding some of the other concerns…..Jagielka, to me, seems both overpriced AND short. If we’re going to play the suicidal high line maybe he’s the fastest of the candidates. Frankly I think a central defense of TV5 and LK6 (with Sneezy as our #1) can do a good enough job IF we have our remaining players pressing hard from the front. IMO another younger CB (i.e., Cahill) to compete with the other three (Those two plus Dj) is what is required, rather than another older dude. Luckily, it sounds like the current squad has been working on set pieces, which is an improvement over just hoping for the best…..

    The real problem is the Cesc/Nasri situation. Both seem mentally if not physically gone. Latest news is that Spurs are trying to outbid us for (potential replacement) Juan Mata. The little I’ve seen of Mata suggests that he’s like a shorter, faster Nasri, a player who wants to move with the ball rather than pass it. IF we get him he might push Arshavin and/or Nasri to show some real desire from one of the forward positions, but maybe others know more and feel he can do some of Cesc’s work in MF…..To me, again, it seems insane (for all parties) to try and keep Samir now that his head has been turned. I say sell him to City, and let him try to outplay Kun, Villa and Tevez, not to mention Milner, Johnson, SWP, etc., etc…..

    All told, things are not good and we seem a club that SHOULD be in a full-on rebuilding mode, probably with a new manager or at least some sort of new leadership and commitment beyond 19 year old Jack Wilshere. Instead our manager continues lying (yesterday’s “Nasri loves the club” takes the cake…..), our Captain’s silence screams “TRANSFER ME” and all we can do is hope that whoever remains (or might come in) gets lucky and gets the early results we need.

    And, finally, on that account (from below)…..Given all the factors at play, a slow start will not be acceptable. Less than 5 or 6 points from our three August matches AND comfortable qualification for the CL group stages seems a must. Anything less and there will be a VERY toxic atmosphere hanging over North London and we might as well play all our matches on the road as the natives will be more than restless. To mix a couple of metaphors: It’s a house of cards AND it seems far too much to ask our very young and/or very jaded players to try and turn the tide of negativity that any early stumble will engender….

    • Fred 30 July, 2011 at 14:55 Log in to Reply

      @HighburyTerraceSteve,

      While I agree with most of what you said, pressing hard from the front does NOT in any way help with setpieces.

      Pressing helps with overrall possession and attack play, but if the other team is mostly just blasting long balls from deep, no amount of pressing can stop that.

      If you run towards the defender, he simply just launches the ball. It makes no difference you running towards him, because that is what the defender would have done anyways!

      In the end, the CBs, DMs will still need to have the quality, desire and organization to deal with long-balls and what not. No amount of pressing from upfront will save them from dealing with it.

    Are we all having fun?

    For those who anticipated a change in M.O. from Herr Wenger, not so much.

    It’s more than a tad ironic that the shortest CB option looks to be the favoured :-) That seems lunacy. Nasri joins Fabregas on the disgruntled star roster and we watch another off-season turn in to a soap opera where our best don’t want to be with us and yet the manager replays his favourite game ‘chicken’ with want-a-way players, pursuing clubs and weary fans.

    No, it’s more of the same I’m afraid. Wenger still knows best, despite the evidence. He’s beyond learning. The most exciting thought is Wenger leaving. How sad. The board won’t act until the roof caves in – Gazidis is wholly ineffective and inconsequential, like a news-reader.

    If it’s going to be 4th again I’d rather we tanked early, go into freefall, and force the boards hand to ditch Wenger. That would bring some interest to the club – both immediate and medium term.

  18. Caribkid 29 July, 2011 at 19:54 Log in to Reply

    If Jagielka is brought in as a partner for Vermaelen we can kiss all potential titles bye bye.

    The only person in our starting lineup over 6″ would be RVP and he is not known to be great in the air. The Stokes and Boltons of the EPL would eat us alive at set pieces and with balls over the top.

    Now, if he was brought in to play DM and JD is paired with TV against those muggers that would be a whole other ball game.

    Oh well, only time will tell.

      @Caribkid,

      I strongly second your sentiments!!!!

      Mind you, MAGICALLY someone changed his height on wikipedia to 6 ft 2in. Guess his REAL height?

      You guessed it … 5′ 11”. (Via soccernet and all other sources).

      Why is it that ALL defenders we buy are ALWAYS 5’11” and the moment we are interested in them they magically increase in height?

      Wenger going for him shows he is STILL trying to have an “all mobile” defense. A defense of all-Kolo Toures!!!

      Wenger now HATES tall, commanding beast CBs – which is ironic because Sol Campbell was his BEST defensive purchase.

      That is why he is selling off Kyle Bartley but BID 16 M for Phil Jones …. who is … wait for it … 5 ft. 11in

      This is the clown manager you guys are hoping will change huh?

    Just some thoughts:

    1. Diaby is out for 10 weeks after ankle surgery. Is there a place we can just take him to the pasture and put him down?

    2. Walcott does not have an ankle injury the MRI came back negative for any injury. He is going through rehab. Great. Givne the Josef Mengle’s running our physio room – he shouldn’t be back ANY time soon.

    3. Credit to City for getting Aguerro. Though now their entire team is unsettled because they all want to be paid like him. Kompany, Dejog and others are already upset. They will still be a force but unless the get someone really creative in the midfield they will still have the issues they had last season. So I don’t see them winning the title – yet.

    4. Chelsea – except for their manager who’d the get? A goal keeper the immediately loaned out to Atletico Madrid (no wonder Almunia isn’t gone yet). And the kid from Barcelona. AVB says the signings he brings in will all be kids to replace the geriatric crew he has now. Chelsea obviously are always a threat with the players they had but it is the players who couldn’t win a game from Novemeber through February last year. They are switching to 4-3-3 under AVB. They have no creative mid which is why they want Modric. Title hunt but they will not get it done.

    5. Liverpool someone needs to tell me how many midfielders can one team have? By last counts they now have 10. I get the desire to build a “British club” but seriously how many mids can you have. If you watched their loss to Hull last weekend – they absolutely offered nothing in the way of an attack. I am going to be interested in how they play. I think they improve but I am sorry I don’t see them as a top 4 side – yet.

    6. Tottenham. Well if there is one club that has been more inactive then us, it is Spurs. What have they done except swap Friedel for Gomes. That makes less likely to let in a clanger but it doesn’t answer the fact they have no strikers. Between Defoe and Crouch I think I read they had like 15 goals. RvP had that in half a season. Spurs tumble out of Europe all together next season.

    7. Us the Arsenal – well if all things stay as they currently are – Cesc doesn’t leave but is unhappy, and Nasri is here – we’re going to be fine. We won’t win the title but we’ll be a top 4 side if everything stays as it is. If we bring in Mata and anyone of the three defenders we’re linked with – and say either Cesc or Nasri leaves (both won’t be going this summer) I actually like our chances of competing. If we we buy Mata without selling Cesc, I like that and would be okay with Nasri going this season. I like Mata better than Nasri. Just me.

    8. United as much as I hate to say it – odds on favourite to win their 20th title.

    But hey there are 33 days left in the window – anything could happen for any of these teams.

    • stag133 29 July, 2011 at 15:33 Log in to Reply

      @DaAdminGooner, So, Chelsea didn’t do much yet, and we haven’t either… last I checked, they were closer to the title than us, and are WILLING to spend money, where Arsenal? not so much.

      I like their chances better than ours. They are a virtual LOCK for Top 4, again… Arsenal, not so much.

      Cesc is GONE.
      Not playing this weekend either… its over… forgettaboutit.

      With our best player OUT, and new players IN … if we are lucky and we pry open the purse with the 30 million plus Cesc brings… the new players will have to adapt, settle, get used to Arsenal.
      That doesn’t bode well for a good start.

      what the feck we’ve waited this long for, is totally beyond anyone with an ounce of sanity…
      United have done their business… and still might add MORE.

      Chelsea, not sure what they are waiting for… but I would be shocked if they didn’t make a splash … I know they are rumored to be in for a few bigger names.

      Liverpool are TRYING to get better. I can’t fault them at all for that… better to have 10 midfielders, than have NOBODY there with any legit experience… if Cesc/Nasri go, what exactly would we have there besides a gaping hole?
      I think they’ll be better than last year, and we’ll be worse, so …. they’re in with a chance at 4th.

      Tottenham?
      not sure what they’re doing either… don’t care… hope they do nothing, so they don’t gain on us as well… but I bet they also bring in a few players before its all said and done.

      Frankly.
      WE SUCKED last year, most of the run in… and our best player is leaving…. so its all about what we do.
      so far. so bad.

      33 days left in the window?
      not really caring… how about 14 days left until the opening match.
      or how many days since the window OPENED, and we’ve let the breeze in the window.

        @stag133,

        I could care less when the business gets done so long as it gets done. If it happens 14 days from now, 30 days from now or 4 weeks ago. If it gets done, I don’t care.

        • stag133 29 July, 2011 at 16:02

          @DaAdminGooner, then I’d say you are a lot like Arsene, and Arsenal… because that means you don’t care about WINNING…. bad start = no shot at the league…

          so if you don’t care about a bad start, then you don’t care about Arsenal’s chances of winning the league….

          which makes no sense, because we aren’t winning the CL, and we don’t give a shit about the Cups.

          waiting to do the business is just plain stupid/lazy or both.
          just my opinion.
          “monkey face” (since the emoticons are down!)

        • DaAdminGooner 29 July, 2011 at 16:14

          @stag133,

          Thats about as big a BS statement as has been made by anyone on this site.

          If what happened at the beggining of the season dictated who won the league, United would be playing in the Europa league. They couldn’t do anything on the road at the beginning of the season. But they managed to turn it up in the second half.

          If anything its what you do from January on that matters. The first half of the year is jockeying to be in a good position for the run from January on.

          We lost two matches early in the season last year but it was what we did down that stretch that dictated our position at the end.

          As long as we get the players we need by Aug 31 – thats fine by me. Do I want it done earlier, yes. But I am not going to fret over the season until I see whether or not they actually bring someone in.

        • stag133 29 July, 2011 at 16:23

          @DaAdminGooner, actually, I’ve read a few other posters on here… that also believe a FAST START this season is ESSENTIAL…
          when you have a young team, with all the question marks we have, coming off a horrible run in… with the best players in the team either asking out, or refusing to sign…. a bad start could easily equate to a MUTINY, by fans and players alike.

          you can call it BS.
          I think Arsenal… and Arsene’s past 6 seasons of futility, of making massive profit off the backs of fans, and selling off of our best assets…. is absolute GREED.

          what’s BS, is supporting that.

        • DaAdminGooner 29 July, 2011 at 16:43

          @stag133,

          Well actually the fan mutiny will begin come September 1 if noone has been brought in so bad start or no – if noone comes in the mutiny will occur.

          I will say this – considering you have every individual involved with the club saying players are going to be coming in (beyond Jenkinson and Gervinho) – there will be a revolt if they’ve been so vocal and are perceived to have lied to or misled the fans.

          As for the GREED of the club – I think you need to accept that sports as anything other than a business is long gone. And what is the purpose of a business – to make a profit. We may not like it – I still miss the old Spectrum in Philly – but it is the way of the world. It’s why trips to Asia and the US are done to make sure the brand is extended and every yankee dollar and asian yen wind up in a club’s bank account. It’s sad but its that way.

      Actually guys, I’m pretty sure that games won in September and games won in April both result in… THREE points. You can come from behind and pip it at the end, or trail off and back your way in. And both have happened numerous times in real life in all the leagues. It doesn’t matter when you win them as long as you win the most.

    Wow. Bob Bradley fired. Didn’t see that one coming, though I can’t say I’m opposed to it provided they hire the right person to replace him. To over-simplify greatly, if they hire another American coach then firing him was a waste of time. If they hire the right foreign coach then I see them logic behind the decision. Klinsman is the name on everyone’s lips, but he’ll need someone who knows tactics to be his assistant if he is named as the head coach.

    THe papers are reporting that Arsenal have upped the offer for Jagielka. I would rather them pay the extra 1-2 million and get Cahill though.

    Depending on which paper you read, Mata is either in town working out the transfer, or there has been no offer from Arsenal at all. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s an excellent player so I hope it goes through.

    Wenger also said in a press conference that we should expect deals to be done sooner rather than later. Yeah right.

    And in a new twist on an old problem, Diaby is now injured before he even stepped on the pitch. I really wish Arsenal would invest in players who aren’t made of cotton candy and pipe cleaners.

    Sorry haters, but this club is contending for the league title THIS SEASON… they are FIRMLY in the Top 4 going forward…

    Chelsea United … DEF top 4, DEF in for the league…
    that leaves Arsenal Liverpool and the Totts for 4th place.

    Liverpool have improved, Tottenham haven’t done much, and we frankly, have done feck all… if we lose Cesc and Nasri, we’ve gone even further backwards.

    GET THIS SORTED WENGER.
    we’re in some serious trouble for a Top 4 spot… more of a challenge than ever before, and LESS of a chance to win the league than ever before.
    Sad Times… Dark Days in North London.

      @stag133,
      I was just about to comment on this exact same thing (being prompted to do so by the news that City have brought in Aguero). Chelsea and both Manchesters are a virtual lock for the top 4. That leaves us to battle it out with Liverpool and Tottenham for the last spot. But frankly I don’t give a f*** whether we get it or not. If we were talking about FIRST, I’d care. But there’s no trophy for 4th, and since we can’t realistically win the CL, what’s the difference between 4th and 6th?

      What would a non-CL season be like for Arsenal? Right now the fans already don’t care about the League Cup (nor should they). And while they do care about the FA Cup, Arsene does not. If we’re out of the CL he won’t have that to care about either, and god knows he won’t care about the Europa Cup. That only leaves the League, and since when do teams outside the top 4 ever have a chance of winning the league these days? They don’t. So what you’d have is a club that cared not one bit about doing well in any of the 4 competitions it would be in. Not trying to win any of the 4 trophies it’s eligible for. So then what’s the point? Why would such a club have a reason to exist?

      • stag133 29 July, 2011 at 12:05 Log in to Reply

        @ChicagoGooner, CG. The club’s reason to exist hasn’t changed much in the past 5 or 6 years…. TO MAKE AS MUCH MONEY & PROFIT AS POSSIBLE.

        UNTIL the lemmings and sheep stop showing up, buying merchandise and supporting EVERYTHING the club does, nothing will change.

        I WANT to support… I want to be interested… I just can’t do it… not watching this over and over and over.

        • ChicagoGooner 29 July, 2011 at 12:16

          @stag133,
          I thought about this when I was writing my comment. But even the goal of making “as much money and profit as possible” would be severely compromised were the team to not be in the CL. And if they were out of the top 4, the veil of contending for the title would be lifted too. No winning = no money-making.

    Just reporting this – do not know if true:

    1. Bendtner is supposedly going to be unveiled at Sporting Lisbon this weekend after making a £9 million switch.

    2. Matta and Arsenal are in negoatiations per reports by Sky Sports.

    Given that we’re 16 days from the start of the season I guess this sort of article is appropriate, so good work DAG. Still, so many things are unsettled it feels (extremely) premature. The problem with that is that we’re under the gun from the get-go. When do we find out who we play in the CL qualifier? A long trip to play a tough team could put two giant holes in our season! We need full points from Newcastle away and Liverpool at home and (of course) we drew both of those last season. IMO, we need to be both good and lucky in these early matches or it will get very ugly, very early…..

    Regarding players for positions, I’m surprised there’s no mention of Diaby, Vela nor Frimpong all of whom will feature quite a bit this season, certainly a lot more than Lansbury.

    Otherwise I think you’ve sketched it out pretty well (Fabianski will be our #2, not Mannone) but this is not a top 4 team without Cesc/Nasri or some decent bodies in to replace them. I’m far more concerned about our ability to create goals without them than about getting a new CB/LB in….

    And when does it all happen? Mata is either taking a medical today or Valencia hasn’t received a bid (depending on who you read). And now Theo is looking at spending August injured (not to mention Diaby). Time to put several layers of bubble-wrap around RVP. Did Gervinho (who simply MUST make an immediate impact) pick up a knock in Germany?

    Sorry, but given the twin realities of last season’s implosion and our dire need to complete our summer transactions, I cannot muster my usual hopefulness. Maybe we’ll learn a bit more over the weekend…..

      @HighburyTerraceSteve,

      Reality says that since we did not do our business early any further signings, especially if they are not experienced EPL players, will need time to adjust and mesh with the team.

      Hence, DAG is totally correct in that this will be the team we start the season with.

      Diaby had a medical procedure on his ankle about a month back and will be out for another month or so. This could be TV like and extend for who knows how long.

      As for Vela, I love the kid but he has not shown anything while on loan to warrant a full time slot. . Also, if we bring in Mata then he falls lower down in the pecking order and like any other youngster, he needs to play in order to improve.

      I would loan him out to Swansea for the season as they play our style and see what he does there

        @CaribKid,

        Only partialy correct as Theo now does his best to try my patience with him already.

        • CaribKid 28 July, 2011 at 16:54

          @DaAdminGooner,

          Gervinho can also play on the right so if we lose Theo for a while he could fill in there and either Vela or Traore could do duty on the left flank. Hopefully we get Mata as he would be a better option over those two.

      • HighburyTerraceSteve 28 July, 2011 at 14:40 Log in to Reply

        @CaribKid, Good points all around….And I didn’t know that about Swansea….Maybe a cheap goal-scorer purchase could be in order for the fantasy league….

        I really hope we learn more over the two weekend friendlies. Vela seems to be getting as many pre-season minutes as anybody and given the assumptions of the lead article (Cesc/Nasri gone) AND the beginning of the injuries, we don’t seem very deep AT ALL. I guess if we go out in CL qualifying we’ll be relatively deeper for the domestic competitions (rolly eye emoticon). In my opinion we need bodies just to keep afloat and players actually producing if we want to do any better than that. Carlitos, also, I think, plays with his head up and is probably good for more assists than goals.

        And it’s on that account that I’m REALLY worried….How will we create goals? Wilshere can play an occasional (left footed only) throughball and (we hope) maybe Ramsey can do likewise (with his right). Frankly, though I really want him to come good, I’m very concerned about leaning too hard on the latter. In his games last season (and highlights from this pre-season) he looked more technically accomplished but slower and less aggressive pushing the ball into space. Given his injury it’s understandable, but we are going to need goals/assists from MF and he would be the obvious source. And let’s not forget that he was always prone to the killer giveaway….. In the end, if Ramsey, Wilshere and Song combine for 20 or more goals plus assists I will be pleasantly surprised…..

        In other words, we need a healthy Cesc, or other players to step in (and up) and fill the hole he will be leaving behind…..

        • CaribKid 28 July, 2011 at 16:51

          @HighburyTerraceSteve,

          It seems apparent that if Barca meets the price Cesc will be sold and Nasri will probably be forced to stay this season at a cost of 20+ M.

          If Barca doesn’t meet the price then Cesc will be here for one more year and Nasri will end up somewhere in Manchester for 20M. Unfortunately, Barca is in the driving seat as they know he will only go to them, really don’t “NEED” Cesc this year as they got their man, Sanchez, and have Thiago, Affelay, Keita, Dos Santos, Jeffren and Hleib (joke )to back up Iniesta and Xavi.

          Mata or a Mata type will be brought in to replace whichever one departs.

          Don’t see us losing both this season, but I have been known to be wrong before :)

    Well thought out and well said DAG.

    My biggest difference with you is that I would use the 4-4-1-1 diamond with the DM (Song) and AM (Arshavin) at the Apices as my primary EPL formation and would revert to 4-3-3 in the CL and against the non long ball EPL opponents.

    The rationale is that it would be easier to defend against the anti-football group by controlling the MF and using our wing backs to create width since they are always packed so tight in the middle.

    Regardless of our formation and the players we have, until Arsene changes his system of defensive rotation we will always be susceptible to the counter via the long ball. If you watch Manu, City, Chelsea, Barca, Real Madrid, Milan(s) and Bayern, they all use the DM to fill the defensive hole when a WB attacks.

    ie. Left back moves up, LCB slides across and DM assumes LCB position thus keeping 4 at the back.

    In our current defensive rotation the wingers and box to box MF’s are asked to cover for the WB’s which relies on individual thought process and decision making. Also, the wing forwards are forced to do a lot more coverage than necessary.

    There are many other weaknesses in Arsene’s method of defensive strategy which will be left unsaid only because a book could be written about it.

    The other main factor here is that we will never be able to defend set pieces until we have at least 2 aerially dominant players, regardless of position, to defend the box. Currently, we have none.

    If I were the manager, I would bring in SAMBA and MATA. Samba being the aerially dominant CB we need to be paired with TV and Mata being interchangeable with Gervinho when he and Chamakh goes off to the ANC.

    My ideal team in a 4-4-1-1with the 2 inclusions I mentioned above would be:
    CZ
    Sagna, Samba, TV, Gibbs/Traore
    Koz (DM), Wilshere, Mata/Ramsey, Arshavin (AM)
    RVP, Gervinho

    In a 4-3-3
    GK and back 4 remains the same
    Wilshere, Koz/song, Ramsey/Mata
    Walcott/Mata, RVP, Gervinho

    Oh well, we can all dream can’t we.

    of course Theo is hurt AGAIN.
    seriously. classic Arsenal player. I suspect Rosicky will go down again any time…

    but on a promising note… rumors are WILD.

    Mata coming to Arsenal for 15 MILL.
    Cesc GOING finally.
    We’re looking at Eden Hazard from Lille.
    That might mean we cash Nasri.

    Just gotta sort out which CB we get… Cahill, Samba or Jags…
    and get a starting LB…

    could be sorted by the weekend… if we get Scott Parker… we’ll have made some nice moves… and actually addressed some areas… while jettisoning 2 players who want to leave for big bucks!

    I serious like your ideas. I think that we should go for the 4 3 3 line up..I like the forward line. Awesome. Gunner for life and looking forward to the next season.

    i like your ideas, personally im relishing the prospect of gervinho, walcott and van persie in the same attack provided they all stay fit.

      @Brian, well that caveat just blew up. walcott injured his “trick” ankle again in pre-season training… here we go again!
