Beware of greeks bearing gifts

Beware of greeks bearing gifts

Tuesday’s Group H Champion’s League match-up sees Arsenal host Greek Champion’s Olympiakos. Both teams warmed up for this meeting with wins during their weekend play. Arsenal gritted out a hard fought win against a focused Fulham side 1-0 and Olympiakos won last midweek over AEK Athens 2-1.

Greek Gaffer Zico is working hard to keep his side firmly planted on the ground. They’ve recognized Arsenal as the favourites to win the group and are intent in doing their business so that go through to the elmination stage. Their 56-year old manager is an admirer of Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger. In Japan when Arsene was manager of Nagoya Grampus Eight Zico was managing as well.
“I admire and I like the way his teams play, the offensive way he makes his teams play, the offensive mentality,” Zico said.

“I follow his career here at Arsenal and I like the way he always makes the most of the players he has.

“This is how he achieved the great success of his life.”

But Zico realizes that in order to have some success at the Emirates his players must,

“pay them the utmost attention, that we leave no space for them,” he said. “They are a very fast team, especially when they attack, especially in the follow-up and we have to concentrate.”

The Greek side is not without players who know Arsenal. Former Villa player Olof Mellberg is the first player to score a competitive goal against Arsenal in the Emirates inagural season of 2006.  Not playing but also part of the team are former Blackburn striker, Matt Derbyshire.  Each player has stressed the need to stay focused ahead of the match.

Arsenal should not overlook this opponent.  Olympiakos have only lost their league once since 1996 – 2003/04- coincidentally, the last time Arsenal won the league trophy. The Greeks are an attack hungry team and won’t be content to just sit back and play route 1 ball with Arsenal. While the score to their opening match in the Group stages was a 1-0 victory over AZ Alkaemar, the controlled the game throughout. They will try and attack a midfield that has been described by some as soft.  And of course they will know that Vito Mannone was stunned into 2 quick goals within the first 2 minutes against Standard de Liege.

Arsenal come in to this match riding the success of a gritty win against Fulham, a side notorious for playing Arsenal hard. But on the right foot of Robin van Persie and the hands (and face) of “Don” Vito Mannone, Arsenal came away with 3 well deserved points.

But not all the news out of the Emirates is encouraging. On Mondayy it was disclosed that Nicholas Bendtner was in an auto accident that will leave him off the team for the match.  Worse still Brazilian mid-fielder Denilson will be out for the next two months with what has been described as a fracture in his back. All is not loss however, as Theo Walcott is back and has claimed his desire to play in this match and while the gaffer may not start him, he could figure in as a substitute.

Arsene Wenger has placed a lot of faith in his young side. He will be looking for further payoff this week as the club looks to continue its successive play in the elemination rounds. The come from behind win at Standard de Liege may have shown that the side is maturing and gaining a resolve that hasn’t been there. The players are certainly talking as a team that is trying to apply lessons learned from last season. It still remains to be seen if they can translate those lessons to silvware next May.

How it should go down?

Olympiakos has only recently improved their away form in Europe. However they have not played in an evnironment like the Emirates or any of the larger clubs. Arsenal on the other hand have only lost once in the last 24 outtings at home in the Champion’s League, last year’s embarrasing loss to Manchester United. While youth will be in abundance on the Arsenal side, they still feature more talent than their competition. Additionally, they will be sensitive enough to not let the match start in a manner similarly to the action in Belgium.

Key Players:

Arsenal:  Vitto Mannone. 2 weeks ago, Vito faced 2 shots in four minutes and each of them went in . Since then he has held on for two cleansheets. One was at the hands of an overwhelmed challenger who put up little in the way testing while another was a well fought battle to keep his side in the match. As in hockey, sometimes matches hinge on the play of the ‘keeper.  The young Don will be called on once again to back stop Arsenal as the their number one still recovers from a chest infection/cold/flu thingy.

Olympiakos: Physical fullback, Vasillis Torrasidis, is the target of a few big clubs because of his hard-tackling ability and while it looks like he could be sold as early as this January, he could try and prove his worth by being a thorn in the side of Arsenal.

Injury report:

Arsenal: Bendtner, Djourou, Denilson, Nasri

Olympiakos: Galleti, Derbyshire

Possible Starting XI:

Arsenal: Mannone, Sagna, Gallas, Vermaelen, Clichy, Song, Rosicky, Fabregas, Arshavin, van Persie, Eboue/Eduardo

Olympiakos: Nikopolidis, Zewlakow, Mellberg, Avraam Papadopoulos, Raul Bravo, Zairi, Dudu, Ledesma, Leonardo, Diogo, Torosidis

Final Score:

Arsenal : 2

Olympiakos:  1

Olympiakos seemed like a pretty good team (or collection of decent players) but they were extremely negative.

And I must say, I felt far more certain (than in similar games last season) that we would break through and score, as I also did in the Fulham game.

The team is starting to come around and the interplay of our small, quick attackers with occasional forays forward from the defenders feels like a promising way of dealing with the teams that park the bus. Defensively we seem to be covering for one another and communicating better and better, although I still say we’ve got problems at the very back (keeper–obviously). Song, Gallas and Vermaelen seem an excellent unit and Clichy played much better. The slower pace allows him to actually contribute, just a bit, offensively. Interesting that AW sat Sagna as Eboue hardly defended and put in a couple of decent balls but was otherwise anonymous (which is probably a good thing).

Diaby did better but is still confounding as it’s almost impossible to tell where he’s actually playing (i.e., if I were a defender I wouldn’t count on him covering for me for a second). When Vela came on, by comparison, he stuck to his assigned channel, and Eduardo (for Rosicky) got straight in behind the defense to set up the goal. Certainly I’d rather see those guys picked in front of Diaby at this juncture.

Blackburn next and another 3 points (needed & will be taken, I’m confident) then internationals and concerns about injuries (we need more guys to come back–Nasri, Fabianski, Theo, etc. than picking up new knocks). Early season as it should be…..

That line-up in the first half was awesome. Except Diaby, he just wasn’t (and prob never will be) on the same wavelength as the others. Nasri will be a good substitute.

Eboue was amazing, such an important player. As a FB he can be as good for us as Johnson is for Liverpool.

    Arshavin MOTM.

    Nothing to complain about???? :shocked

Arshavin’s goal is offside though clearly. Still like the Celtic penalty I doubt it would have altered the result.

Secondly Olympiacos didn’t get a sniff from the referee sadly, not 1 50-50 ball they got. Kinda like we get when we go to ManU or any big European club.

What did Oly deserve? Yes, I’d say Arshavin was offside too, but no, it wouldn’t have mattered.
They got nothing because they deserved nothing.

Thought Olympiakos played dreadfully, partly from Arsenal pressure.

Even when they were able to break out of their penalty area with the ball, there was no organization – a few dribbles or a couple of passes and possession was lost.

It did seem like many 50/50 calls but most of their effort last night was frustration from
      chasing.

    We absolutely KILLED them, 2-0.
That doesn’t make sense, but it was absolutely factual.
We could have scored… probably should have scored 5 or 6.

Cesc, can’t shoot for shit. Its between him and Eboue for WORST
    shooters in the world.
But he sure as hell can pass the ball beautifully!

We were fluid, moved the ball all over the pitch, and created an abundance of opportunities… but it was shaky there until we actually scored the opening goal… which we passed into the net, in true Arsenal fashion.

But I’d have taken an ugly 1-0 win, with an own-goal…
over us drawing this match 0-0, which was a real possibility.

You can play all the pretty ball you want, and dominate possession, scoring chances, corners, and every other category, but if you don’t WIN it means shite.

GREAT win… and if we can get Nasri and Theo back soon, we will have a crazy crazy crazy amount of scoring options and offensive firepower.
Looking forward to seeing that come to fruition.

Okay, so I’ll throw in my two cents:

I’m hoping by May that Arshavin will finally have the fitness to play 90 minutes.
HE IS AMAZING! The fluid inter play of Cesc, Arshavin, RvP, Rosicky, + Eduardo, just SCARY.

Song had ‘another’ great match. Who is his back up? ( does anyone want to speculate?)

    Back 4 were solid (again).
    Hoping Mannone starts on Saturday.

I don’t think Diaby had a bad match, but I’m seeing more stability in midfield from someone like Ramsey
and would like to see Arsene start him over Diaby on Saturday.

come on give it a rest Stag. What’s the point talking about the same thing for 4 or 5 years?

The new season has just underway, we are now ONE more defeat than the table leaders in the league. By no mean the end of the world. We won 3 out of 3 in CL. Kids got their job done again in CC early round.

    Everything to play for.

Save this Arsenal-need-to-buy talk till we actually LOSE in the title race would ya?

‘Cos in football, you never know. It’s too early to say we are going to win something. Likewise, it’s too early to say we are going to win nothing neither.

No. I will reiterate endlessly how Wenger fucked us again. Sorry.

Arsene refuses to spend money to bring in players, even though
    the club say its available.
    OK.
Has he watched the #1 keeper in the squad, or does he know who it is?
And its obvious we could use a few key players.

So if he refuses to sign anyone, now that he is the longest serving
manager in Arsenal history, lets just fire him now, and be done with it!
    ;)

Keep your head in the sand Arsene!

Very likely Walcott will NOT be in squad tonight. He featured in a Reserve friendly against Olympiakos XI won by Arsenal 3-1.

For those of you wondering – today marks the day that Arsene Wenger becomes the longest serving Arsenal manager. (Sure you all knew that).

Look, I can’t always agree with the man and I am still left scratching my head why with such a bounty this summer none of the moves he was trying for came to light. Well actually I think it does come to ego (and not in the bad way Fred or Stag may think.)

In terms of anyone’s ego it is very hard to admit you were wrong. In a manager or coaches position they will find it hard to admit they were wrong in terms of their personnel choices. Arsene I believe is going to give every chance for his players to fail.

Case in point Senderos. He gave him every chance much to my chagrin at least – next to Manny – Phillipe has done nothing to ingratiate himself to my good graces. Arsene has shown that when his patience with a player runs out he does not stand in their way to move. Phillipe could’ve been at Everton and may still go there next summer.

Point is Arsene’s patience is up. Obviously it is not the case with Diaby or Denilson. Likely Diaby has a shorter leash. I do not think he had a good game at all against Fulham and was pretty much owned by them. A theme that is showing up more frequently this season. He gives the ball up too freely for someone his size. Denilson shows more promise and I think Arsene will give him room. Diaby to is in until the rest of the midfield (Rosicky and Nasri) are completely back.

I am willing to give AW the benefit of the doubt. I looked over articles when Henry was signed and some of the other signings he made and there was some praise but not a lot for those signings but for the most part they became Arsenal legends.

While 4 years is a long time in terms of this club to not win anything, I guess I have patience because it took my Phillies 25 years to win a World Series again.

    • Andez 29 September, 2009 at 09:09 Log in to Reply

hey I didn’t know AW is now Arsenal’s longest serving manager, I thought he already was! ;)

George Allison. I didn’t know either.

You said: “I know its beeOlympiakos have only lost their league once since 1996 – coincidentally, the last time Arsenal won a trophy.”

    LOL
I know it certainly feels like about 13 years since we last one a trophy!! but there was that season where we didn’t lose a single league match and were ummmm INVINCIBLE! (there were a couple of nice doubles in there as well)

I think this should be a good test for Arsenal. I would have to believe that Oly will come to take some point(s)… and provide us with the best opponent in our group.

We obviously can’t afford another idiot start to the match, as there will likely be no way back from 2-0 down against this team.

I think we get one early, and one late.
    2-0.
I hope to see Theo come on as a sub… it will be nice to have him as a speedy option of the bench late.

Good catch. Exactly the reason I should do these things in the day.

  18. nipuna 29 September, 2009 at 00:44 Log in to Reply

I would love to see the attacking line up you have mentioned. It is like our dream team – Cesc, Rosicky, Arshavin, v Persie and Eduardo. But I doubt it will happen. I think Diaby and/or Eboue will start to provide some “balance”. Still should be a comfortable home win.
