Match Preview: Arsenal v QPR; EPL Match Day 19

It goes without saying – anything less than 3 points will draw some serious question marks over our ability to sustain a challenge for the top 4.  Good thing for Arsenal is that they face off against QPR, a team that can’t seem to keep opponents from scoring All of it sets the table for a tasty tie to end the first half of the Premier League season.

QPR come to the Emirates coming off a draw to Swansea that ended a run of three successive defeats. They bring a squad that is having challenges defensively and features former Gunner Aarmond Traore as the left back.  It also features Arsenal’s prime agitant – Joey Barton. You remember him. Got Diaby sent off last season. Had Gervinho sent off  this season. Meanwhile for whatever reason his petulant acts go unpunished. The good thing for Arsenal is Diaby isn’t around to lose his cool. The key will be making sure noone else does as that is what Barton brings to the game.

The question remains whether or not Robin Van Persie will start this match. With Fulham a mere 48 hours after this match, resting him for this match seems to be the right option. Resting him however would deny him the chance to equal or better Alan Shearer’s record of 36 goals in a calendar year.  However, if you want my opinion, and I know you do, the only record that matters is the table and the fight for a champion’s league spot. Therefore, forget the antics of getting Van Persie the ball instead of taking clear cut chances. If Van Persie is rested or if people take their own chances to the detriment of the record and for the chance to win – so be it.

Outside of the walking wounded Arsenal fortunately don’t enter this match with any new injury worries. The players up front are still fit if not maybe a little tired from the playing. Unfortunately, for Van Persie, his scoring prowess combined with the inability for Chamakh or Young to show their worth has meant less chances for him to rest. Its not good and it has created the perception that Arsenal are a one-man team. I am sure if there was a suitable number 2 that wouldn’t be the issue but right now we don’t have one.

I think Wenger will go back to his first starting line up with Ramsey in the midfield in place of Benayoun. Walcott is back from the illness that kept him out of the Wolves match. This gives us speed on both sides, something I thought we lacked against Mick McCarthy’s side.  QPR’s defenders aren’t pacy and they could have trouble with the Arsenal attack. Well, if we’re honest, they have had trouble with pretty much everyone’s attack.

But to the matter at hand – given the results of the past week and Arsenal’s failure to make up ground, they need to keep pace and the only way to do that is with a win. A draw isn’t terrible but it does little to help the cause. A loss? Well, I don’t really need to go into that do I?  There can be no mercy for this side and frankly we need to be absolutely cut-throat. I hope that newly minted Gunner Thierry Henry relays that the charges before the match.

That’s right. . Wenger today confirmed they have a deal in place to have Henry on loan at the Emirates for two months – about 11 matches. He won’t be able to play tomorrow because the window doesn’t officially open of course. But he can lend the team some of his wisdom. He needs to let them know that if you believe you can win – you will win. The thing about the teams Henry played with, is that when they took the pitch they knew they’d get a result. The match was over before it had begun. This team needs to start developing that mentality. There certainly is talent enough and a workman like ethic here to make it happen. Hopefully, it is one of the intangibles that Henry brings to the club during his second stint.

How the Match Should Play Out:

Arsenal’s speed and passing should give QPR’s defenders fits. Arsenal need to press for two early goals. One to ease the nerves and second to force the game wide open. The more open Arsenal make the game the more it is likely that the chances will be there for the win and for Van Persie to break the record. Look for Arsenal to press and get the ball back to push their claims on the 3 points. They harried Wolves all day and it resulted in 73% possesion and 22 shots. If not for Hennessy, it would’ve been a route. While I don’t expect this be an 8-2 style thrashing – QPR do have some talent – it could be bad for them.

Players to Watch:

Arsenal. Robin Van Persie. Yes, I am picking him again. Only because he needs a brace tie the Shearer record. He should be rested but I don’t see it happening.

QPR. Joey Barton.  For all the reasons why you should watch Joey Barton.

Things fell our way today, esp. with the other results….Sorry Stag about your beloved Spurs dropping the points in Wales, better luck with City tomorrow…..

Theo and Alex Song were on the stinky side today, I thought, while I’d love to see Ramsey work as hard as Arteta does. At least he seems confident that his shots and passes will work, despite consistent and repetitive evidence to the contrary these days…..

RVP was total class just to get himself shots or (what should have been) a goal for Gervinho. And he even got an assist from Andrey Anonymous and a share of the team record with our other striker (Henry, who would’ve been a nice option late on). On the GDC we had some debate about the goal. My first impression is that the defender should’ve gotten a toe to the pass, but others say that Andrey’s pass was perfect weight….

Need an update about our 3rd choice LB (Vermaelen), though our 5th (Coquelin) looked handy over there, going forward at least. TarBat seems to have been learning some diving and hacking from Joey B, but didn’t get the call after turning Le Coq. Funny too that Gerv tried a dive after dawdling on the ball late on….maybe he was trying to bait Barton who I half expected to turn around and haul him back to his feet…..

Anyhow, all’s good in the hood (as they say)….onto the Cottage….and the new year….Have a good one…..

@HighburyTerraceSteve, no worries HTS, I know you can’t possibly say something good about another team or bad about ours…
but I live in the real world without Red Tinted spectacles.
      Always will.

@stag133, LOL, yeah I never say anything bad about our team…..(See for example comments about Ramsey, Arsh, Theo or Song, above…..)

So, in the real world are we signing Kaka or Neymar or maybe we should try to outbid Chelsea for the other Brazilian flavor of the week–Hulk for 85 million pounds?!?….. And are we WINNERS today, after being LOSERS last Tuesday? (And winners the match before that? etc., etc.)

No worries, my friend, I am in a good mood after the not-so-boring 1-nil to the Arsenal…..And the table, as I’ve been told, doesn’t lie…..Please forgive me if I’m pulling for Sunderland tomorrow…..

        • stag133 31 December, 2011 at 21:56

@HighburyTerraceSteve, I’d sign Kaka AND Neymar!! yes please.

    @stag133,
We should have buried them 4 or 5, we need to work on our taking of chances, especially Walcott and Gervinho, Walcotts 1-on-1 miss was horrendous and Gervinho looks like he always wants more time on the ball, I like him I really do but his finishing is abysmal

Totally unexpected results today, United beaten at home by Blackburn and Chelsea losing 3-1 at home to Villa.

But hey, the main thing is were in the Top 4 at the end of 2011, but I feel sorry for RVP for not breaking the record, but hey the main thing was 3 points

happy new year you gunners !!
chelsea and united lose at home while totts drop some points,
while we somehow manage to win.

and a wild day in the EPL ends as a GREAT day for Arsenal. All over QPR in the 2nd half, while I wish it was more comfortable on the scoreboard… we won 1-0.

    Chelsea LOSE at home.
    United LOSE at home.
Tottenham CHOKE away a late 1-0 lead and draw at Swansea!

7 matches today. Only ONE home team wins, and its the Arsenal!!!

Hope all the YAMA folks have a fabulous New Years!
Be safe. Have fun. Enjoy the win!!

    :)
All is well to end the year, now lets start 2012 with a few signings.
Anything on Vermaelen’s injury… (again? really?)

setting up to be a great day for Tottenham and Liverpool so far….

We SUCK in the 1st Half against QPR.
Against Wolves and QPR we should be burying these teams early and often.
    VERY TROUBLING SIGNS.

Totts taking care of business on the road.

Chelsea drawing at home to Villa.
United LOSE at home to Blackburn?
(I guess Fergie is trying to keep Kean employed?)

WIth a lot of games in a short “festive period”… strange results often happen…
but there is no excuse for not beating the likes of Wolves and QPR at home.
We better come out in the 2nd half and take care of business.

    @ HTS…
Yeah, that’s what it is… we’re buying someone to replace him.
But why would we do that? I’ve heard Arsenal fans GLOW over how good Frimpong is and will be… if he’s that good, you wouldn’t loan him out for any reason.

  6. HighburyTerraceSteve 31 December, 2011 at 11:41 Log in to Reply

Happy Birthday to You, Sir Alex…. (Did De Gea learn his coming for corners from our Spanish keeper?…..)

Lineup as expected, except that Andrey gets a start in place of Gervinho. For me, this means Ramsey will have to run even more than usual AND make the telling pass and/or convert chances that fall his way…..

Finally, to yank Stag’s chain…..Frimpong out on loan MUST mean that we’re buying Yann M’Vila, whose price is a bit less on Jan 1 than it was in September (perhaps because he hasn’t impressed at Rennes this Fall?)…..I’m sure they’re just negotiating personal terms and an announcement is imminent….Winky, winky……

Here’s to 3 points and (to be a bit greedy) securing them on the earlier side so we might rest and run out a couple of players according to their needs…..

  7. stag133 30 December, 2011 at 22:09 Log in to Reply

just read we are loaning out Frimpong.
    WHY?

If we aren’t bringing in players, we should certainly NOT be loaning any out, especially those that actually have made 1st team appearances. FA Cup starts, CL, and League… We already have every FB we have injured.

      @stag133,
I think its because Coquelin is slightly ahead of him in the pecking order, but I’d prefer it if he didn’t go to Wolves

@George, We can always recall him if need be can’t we? Think he needs the games…
