Match Preview FA Cup 4th Round: Arsenal v Aston Villa

We’re back. It’s been a few days since we had anything to say. Not because didn’t want to mind you but because our server died. That’s right early Thursday morning we were informed by our hosting company that the server housing YouAreMyArsenal.com had died and would need to be rebuilt. Finally, early Saturday evening after repeated refresh attempts the site came back on. I’m still not getting email and should have a deluge once it gets back on line but we’re back with enough time to put out a preview of the FA Cup 4th round tie between Arsenal and Aston Villa.
The club are in need of a win in a big win. After 3 successive losses in the league, anything that makes the fan base happy and feeling good will be welcomed. The good thing for the Gunners is they are at home. Even in spite of the reaction to the subbing of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain last Sunday, the home crowd should be up for the day and in full throat for the home side.
Darren Bent is likely to start up front for Alex McLeish’s men. I don’t think anyone needs reminding of what can happen when we were last complacent against this squad and with Darren Bent on the field. It was over before it started. Additionally, Arsenal don’t need to be reminded of what happened the last time they faced off against an Alex McLeish side in a cup tie. Any lack of focus or flat play will make this a very hard night for the Gunners.
With Bent they have scoring but with the likes of Agbonlahor and Albrighton on the wings they have speed too. That means its likely Arsenal fullbacks could be under the kosh. Throw in Villa’s own MLS signing – Robbie Keane and Villa could present problems.
Look for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to feature and act as a counter to Villa’s pace. He has shown in few appearances that he is a better all-around option than Andrei Arshavin. With Villa’s speed it also means the misfiring Theo Walcott will start. And in the middle none other than Mikel Arteta should feature as he returns from his calf injury.
And their is other good news to actually report from London Colney as RB Bacary Sagna is set to face a late fitness test on Saturday to determine if he will play on Sunday. Even if he doesn’t start he will likely be on the bench If Sagna is on the bench look for youngster Nico Yennaris to get the nod over Johann Djourou. One of the bright spots of the loss to United was the solid play of Yennaris. He came on to replace Djourou in the 2nd half and tightened up an area that had clearly been targeted by United. Whatever the combination it is a better back four when Djourou is out of the squad.
The other good news we’ve heard is that Francis Coquelin is set to return and Kieran Gibbs returns to full training on Monday. Unfortunately, there was bad news to report as Jack Wilshere suffered a set back complaining of ankle pain. The time-frame of this latest set back is unknown but it is likely a safe bet to say to say we shouldn’t count on him for the rest of the season.
Arsenal really need to come out and treat this match like its a cup final. They need to take the play directly to the visitors and control the match from the get go. If they come out as flat as they have in the last few matches the Aston Villa squad that is likely play will take advantage.
The FA Cup looks like Arsenal’s best bet for silverware. Both of the the Manchester clubs are out. Chelsea look like the need a miracle to win and Liverpool remain the next solid club. It’s perfectly set for the red and white side of North London. But they still have to do the deed.
Some facts courtesy of the BBC:
- Villa have already lost 2-1 to Arsenal in the Premier League at Villa Park this term, but won last season’s trip to the Emirates Stadium 2-1.
- This is the 10th time these clubs have been drawn to meet in the FA Cup; Arsenal lead by six wins to three, with the most recent in the 1983 quarter-finals
- Arsenal are the second most successful club in FA Cup history, having won the competition 10 times (one fewer than Manchester United), and been runners-up on seven occasions. In the six seasons since winning the cup in 2006, they have failed to make the fifth round twice.
- The Gunners have won their last three ties in front of the home supporters, and have not lost in 32, since a 1-0 reverse to Leeds in the fourth round in February 1997

Well, I’m planning to watch the team, and continue hoping for the best….And (fool that I am….) I’m pretty chuffed (as they say….) about yesterday’s result and the spirit shown in making it happen.
The first half showed that we’re still weak at set pieces and prone to difficulties with teams that park the bus and play on the break. I also think that we’ve got a long term liability in Fabianski who, despite his great reactions, just never quite does the right thing, knows (deep down) that it’s a problem and plays with a nervousness that transmits to the rest of the squad. Almunia, if we’re gonna keep paying him, should be our #2, and given that he’s a PK specialist, I’d really prefer to see him in goal for cup matches that might go to pens.
Alas, the home crowd prolly feels differently….
And, peaking of pens….. Both calls were correct and Dick Dunne should’ve received a 2nd yellow. It probably wasn’t a straight red as Ramsey’s touch was heavy, but it was brutish (and dangerous) and Ramsey is a brave lad for getting his toe in with the galoot (two stones heavier than Shawcross?) bearing down on him. Likewise, Koscieldinho did well in earning his. Those who say he’s no good need to have their head examined (or at least take away the prism of hate through which the game is viewed–watch how he plays balls out of the backfield, for example….) I also liked the spirit he showed mixing it up with Darren Bent (by far Villa’s most talented and threatening player) and taking his yellow for the team by fouling him early and kicking a ball his way. Now, if Mike Jones stands up to Alex McLeish (and the anti-Arsenal media, calling for a retroactive straight red) and says, yeah I saw RVPs elbow and I called it on the pitch, he will be my new favorite….
Looking forward, there’s deadline day tomorrow then Bolton on Weds. Will we have the Britney Spears fanboy, et. al., live-blogging the former? My expectations are low, esp. now that we’ve heard that Set-Back’s (rhyming slang, right….) not in a boot and that Diaby is almost back in training (LOL). With Arshavin booed when announced among the subs and Ryo off to Bolton (in exchange for a roll-over on Weds?) we’re looking as thin as Gervinho’s ankles, which I hear are missing shots right and left at the ACON, but at least are still intact….
Bolton are in good form coming off nice wins vs ‘Pool in the league and Swansea in the cup, but maybe that means they can afford a let-up. Can we? I think we all know the answer to that one…. Hopefully we go into the match with the same attitude we employed yesterday after half-time, rather than before, using our pace to create real pressure. On the plus side, Arteta, Henry and Bac Sagna (I can wear my blonde extensions again!) are available, but our need for them is maybe not all that desperate, given good outings from Sicky, Ox-Cham and Le Coq yesterday….
Still we need to take it one transfer at a time, one match at a time, etc., etc. And, if you hate the team it’ll all be over shortly. Surely, no transfers and less than all three pts at Bolton would have to be the final straw, if that’s your bag (more rhyming)…. Keep us posted….
@HighburyTerraceSteve, we’ve sucked on set pieces
for YEARS, just another area that is never addressed… its DEFENSE, so Wenger
really can’t be bothered with it.
I agree that the penalties were deserved, no controversy at all, and Dunne
definitely should have gotten the 2nd yellow…
You go and enjoy this wonderful team all you can.
Great football, innit?
If you would be so kind, buy some kits and scarves and schwag, the club really
need to increase the profits…
and since Wenger said “I HEART ARSHAVIN”… it appears we won’t be able to
get any ca$h for him in this window, so we’ll have to squeeze a few more
pence from the foolish flithy masses! :)
I’ll watch a bit here and there… if its on Fox, and the sun isn’t shining…
but I’m not all in with this team… the fans deserved more, and better…
and so did the players…
what’s left? 24 hours in the window?
oh, we don’t need anyone, we have injured players returning!
LIKE NEW SIGNINGS!!!!
well done Arsene, well played Arsenal Football Club, LLC…
suckers bought in again for another season… and we fleeced them AGAIN!
I am sure they’ll sell the European Cup League thingy as some sort of
higher moral tournament than the Champion’s League… I mean, the CL is
pure EVIL, its all those RICH teams, who spend their way to victory, while
Arsenal wait to overtake the entire football world when the economy causes
Manchester United and City…. Barcelona and Madrid… and all the others to
go bankrupt! You just wait and see!!!!
It’s all yours HTS. The stage is yours.
@stag133,
Oh, you’ll be back….
And, I feel your pain (and agree with many of the sentiments)
Though perhaps I’m a bit bored with the sarcasm and
“I’m done” proclamations….
Just trying to enjoy what I can, etc., etc., The comeback
Seemed better than the alternative…..
You might enjoy an interesting podcast today on Le Grove, with
Alex Flynn (Arsene’s neighbor, author of the “Making of a
Superclub” book, public school accent, etc….) It’s long
And I’m only part way through it, but (thus far at least)
He’s not afraid to critique all the various characters….
Until next time…..
@HighburyTerraceSteve, yes.
I will be back … randomly and on occasion, but I will never be back 100%, traveling
to matches, and re-arranging my schedule and life, to some degree, to watch an
Arsenal match…
that, is for sure…
Not until major things change at the club… be in Wenger being fired, or walking away…
or the board being forced to change or buy players, to at the very least, replace
the stars we sell for huge profits.
What will you do this Summer when we sell RVP? oh, he was a greedy one that Robin!!
we MADE him… so what if we didn’t make the CL… he should have played better, and
been more patient! LOOOOL
but whatever… there is lots of good football out there to watch…
I enjoy that Cup that Wenger finds to be a nuisance, you know, the FA Cup… with minnows
beating much bigger teams,… its much like the NCAA March Madness… spread out over months…
and… I am glad to see Charlton Athletic running away with Division One, getting back to
the Championship, where they belong… and West Ham looking good to get back to the EPL.
I follow PSG, and this is a dream year for them so far…
I mean, hell… they’ve actually spent a lot of money on players, so it won’t really count? right?
but they’ve been underachieving for too many seasons…
and I frankly quite enjoy the MIDGETS of Barcelona, just toying with Real Madrid!!
How many star players can one team have under 5 foot 7 inches? LOL
so, you have at it HTS, you enjoy what we have left of this amazing season of NOTHING-ness.
The club could care less about the fans, and success on the pitch, as long as the asses are in
the seats, and the foam fingers are being sold…
I’ll be back when we have something significant happen or change made at the club…
who knows…
I might be back tomorrow, when we buy one or two “special players”!!
haaaaaa!!! I love that line.
A surprising comeback win… by a team that was dead at the half…
granted, 2 penalties … with Aston Villa almost helping us…
but it was a good win.
The reality is, the window is just about shut, and we did nothing.
I will watch a bit, here and there, but I’m done with this team.
it’s simply not that enjoyable to watch, or be a supporter, of a club that does not care about winning.
@stag133, good things you’re not a cubs fan….
@jroybower, Jbrower.
The Cubs spend MANY millions on players…
and frankly with Theo Epstein running the show, I would bet they
Win the World Series in the next 5 years.
So, at LEAST they try to bring in players, and attempt to improve the
team… and Arsenal?
They sell their best players off for HUGE profits, sell the highest
priced tickets in all of Europe, and expect the fans to just
embrace the insanity …
f*CK that shite.
I’ll watch a bit here and there… I love the game…
but I am not going to be a sucker any longer.
When policy changes on bringing in talent, Wenger / the Board go or get shaken up, I’ll regain the type of interest that drove me to spend many thousands flying to and from London to see the team play…
well, we never make it easy on ourselves. glad to see the fight back, i’d have preferred to not ship to goals to begin with though….
2-0 down no fkin fight. These lot should be made to watch Nadal vs Djokovic from today to learn what hunger and passion are
@OziKenyan,
Maybe they caught the highlights at half time.. niceee
@OziKenyan,
have to say that was some comeback, springboard for a few more wins?
I am on in Gameday Chat
