The transfer window – IS OPEN!!

Attention shoppers, the European transfer window is now officially open. Okay, it was actually open yesterday but with all the hoopla around Spain it may have been missed. Red light specials are across Europe and Arsenal have a few goodies (or baddies depending on your view) hanging in the window.

The opening of the window means that the contracts of both Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud kicked in. It also mean (trumpets please) that Manuel Almunia who was released by the club in late May/early June – is officially not an Arsenal player any more. After watching Spain and all that talent on display leave it to Arsenal to find the only one without any talent. But I digress. The release of the Spanish keeper removes approximately £3 million off the wage rolls and begins what many Gooners hope will be the culling of the heard of the dead wood.

The list below we haveused before to show how much Arsenal could save by getting rid of all the players listed and identified as potential transfers. It should be mentioned all the figures are speculative and gathered via multiple sources.

For the purposes of this conversation its here just to remind us of those players and cover off on the news we’ve heard so far.

Also just to set the table, people seem to be getting worried because players are back at Arsenal after loan deals expired. I am not sure why this surprises anyone. These players were out on loan. Since they have not been signed by other clubs and the loan period has officially ended, they have to contractually report to their parent club. Nothing wrong here and it doesn’t mean the intent of either the player or the club has changed.

Nicklas Bendtner.

The world’s greatest striker  – at least in his own mind. Had by all accounts a stellar Euro 2012.  It definitely put him on the radar and likely expanded the quantity and quality of clubs willing to take a look at him.  This much seems certain, Nicky B is off.

A sale seems the most likely with his stock riding so high. Realistically it looks like fees of around £8-£10 million should be what the club can expect for him. Remember, even though his national team form has been great, his club form has been mediocre at best. So anyone expecting some exorbitant amount for the Great Dane is sadly mistaken.  Still in the end I think he’s gone well before the window closes.  Likely destination in my opinion, Germany.  That being said wouldn’t be surprised if a mid- to low-table Prem club try to snatch him up.

Maourane Chamakh.

Where Chamakh winds up remains a big mystery. When the Olivier Giroud deal with Montpellier was starting to get traction it looked like Chamakh could be included as a make weight in the deal. Well, Giroud is here and so is Marouane Chamakh.

Like many of the ‘deadwood crew’ Chamakh’s weekly wages are winding up being a hinderance to his departure. It is clear that he has failed to impress and the club seem bent on getting rid of him. However, he is not likely to let up on his wage demand. The options here and likely for a few other of these players is for the club to lower the fee they are looking for to offset the weekly salary or to come up with some sort of buy out. Neither of these in my opinion seem like palatable options to the money misers at Arsenal. If Chamakh can’t be moved via sale then it is likely a season long loan – in France probably – will happen.

Andrei Arshavin.

In the early look of the Euros it seemed to many that Andrei had returned to his 2008 form and was carrying Russia through the tournament. The prospect of Andrei’s value going through the roof again looked likely. Especially since both the player and his home town club, Zenit St. Petersburg looking to make a deal.

Then after Russia missed out on the knockout round of the Euros, Andrei had to go an open his mouth. Now if you know Andrei, Andrei speaks his mind and is very opinionated.  Well, what he had to say coming out of the Euros was lets just say he slammed Russian fans. And let’s put it this way Zenit nor the Russian FA were pleased.

So right now Andrei rejoins Arsenal. I’m not really sure whether Wenger wants him gone or not.  I do think that if the right offer comes in for him (around £6-£8 million) he’ll be off.  Zenit were keen and I am sure once the Euros are further in the distance they may come to their senses. He was more effective there in Russia than he was ever here in England.

Sebastien Squillaci.

He is a goner.  Word is that he was in France working on a deal with Ligue 1 newcomers Bastia.  There is no story here, Arsenal gambled on him and it failed. He was woeful 9 times out of 10 for the Gunners and everyone, player and club want to end this quicker than not.

Johann Djourou.

Ah, JD. Two seasons ago you filled in at CB along side new comer Laurent Koscielny and the pair were a solid tandem. Then you went and hurt your shoulder and well, you never got back your form. We can forgive you for crapping up the place as a 3rd string RB. You aren’t a RB. But the fact remains even in your sparingly used time as a CB you were hit and miss.

Johann Djourou’s swiss head coach told anyone who would listen that Djourou’s spot on the national team is in jeopardy because of a lack of playing time. Arsenal seem okay to hold on to him as a 4th option at CB but should an offer come in for him wouldn’t be against selling him.

That offer could come from Italy. Napoli to be exact. Yes, I know everyone said Juve. Juve are not a destination for JD if he leaves Arsenal. Napoli are looking to add depth to their squad. They do have a few swiss players in their team already and JD would likely be at home there. Plus the speed of the game in Italy might be better suited to his style. I think this link to Napoli will be come clearer once the deal for Lavezzi to PSG is completed.  Then look for Napoli to take the money they make on the deal and turn it around to add further depth their squad.

Carlos Vela.

I was never a Carlos Vela fan. I never got sucked in by his every so often chips in goal. I don’t know what it was but I just never felt he seemed to be of the Arsenal mold. Well, seems Carlos thinks the same as he has asked his agent to make sure he doesn’t go back.

Real Sociedad of La Liga where he spent last season on loan look the leaders in landing him but are hesitant to pay Arsenal’s asking price of around £6 million.  Members of Real Sociedad’s back off office have been reportedly back and forth to hammer out a deal with Arsenal. This is another I think gets done and soon.

Denilson.

This is another question mark. The rumour is that he wants to stay at Sao Paulo and Sao Paulo want him to stay. Sound familiar? Also the club looks like they want to sell him. Again, the hold up is fee and weekly salary. This is being worked on and likely will be decided in the coming weeks.

The rest.

The future for the rest is uncertain. Chu-Young Park looks likely to go after opting for Military Service (or something like that). Given the fact that he hasn’t worked out AT ALL – he’ll likely be gone one way or the other. Lukas Fabianski has asked to be released and that too looks likely provided Arsenal can find a good deal. The others, well, who knows. Loans are likely as are selling.

The club are restructuring themselves both on the wage front and talent front. Now there is a mix of older, experienced talent as well as some promising youth but the team doesn’t look like it will skew more to the lower end of the 20’s. This squad will be older and better equipped to handle the rigors of the Premier League and a title challenge.

No, this doesn’t mean we are moving away from the identification of promising young talent. Rather it means someone looks like they have learned that an over reliance on youth gets you very little. The good that was seen last season bringing in more proven talent has shown what that can bring.

The additional team tweaks, i.e. – necessary departures and other talent brought in are steps in the right direction.

The window is now open all across Europe. The Euros are over – team practices begin in two weeks (or there abouts) – summer is about to get interesting again.

Is there even a remote possibility that we let van Persie’s contract run down?

I can think of a couple of reasons to do so –

    1. On the back of a bad Euros and his age of 29, he might not fetch a great transfer value. Maybe even less than what was paid for Nasri.

    2. If we keep him, then he would be again playing at this best ( a la Nasri) as he would be trying to get a great contract elsewhere

    3. Next year, in case we win something, something big, in his presence, we might convince him to stay.

    4. Moreover, after one more season, the salaries and contract length offered to him by other clubs, would also not be as attractive as they would be now. So, if we make our stance loud and clear, van Persie might find himself betting on his future performances (and he may have his internal doubts on the same), and may still sign a contract extension.

@soccerfreak, so you are advocating that we keep a player in the team who does NOT want to be here… and let him walk away at the end of the season for NOTHING?

Are you serious? or is this a joke?

He could simply say, I’m injured… and not play, and collect his salary…
why would he go out there and give any kind of effort for club who refuse to let him go?
The club don’t care about his wishes to WIN NOW, and match his ambition, and you think he’s going to go out there and risk his future for the club?

and you think Arsenal are going to allow him to walk away for NOTHING?
The club are 1000% about making profit. They will NEVER allow a player of his caliber walk away, and get nothing in return. They will sell him to the highest bidder… and the IDIOTS who blame RVP in this instance, will say: “nice piece of business, the club is bigger than the player”…

apparently the club isn’t bigger than Wenger, but its bigger than all the players that have left in the past 7 years…
we’ve won NOTHING without the players, but we still have massive profits with Wenger and the Board leading the way.
      You do the math.

This could go one of two ways in my opinion

    1) Its the final kick up the ass the board and Arsene need and they sign RVP’s replacement as well as some other players that will make the squad better to make Arsenal competitive again

    2) The board and Wenger decide that because there’s no hope in him staying they don’t have to show intent anymore so don’t sign anyone else and are content with finish 3rd/4th again

    • stag133 4 July, 2012 at 21:55 Log in to Reply

@George, you are dreaming if you think the club care about making the club “competitive again”.
They are competitive… they are competitive in PROFIT MAKING.

They will NEVER change, until the fans send the club a message.

There is no hope. Without RVP and Arteta, the club would have finished in 7th? 8th?
We only won 1 match all season, the last one… without Arteta in the line-up, and RVP had the best season in recent memory… without these 2 players, we would have been mid-table fodder.

Maybe you can get excited about playing for 3rd of 4th place… but if you are selling tickets for the prices we are, its basically pissing all over your clientele…. and laughing at them.

even if van persie were staying, the direction of the club is poor. is giroud better than van persie? nope! but the club blew 13 million. giroud’s not even better than bendtner.

is podolski clearly better than gervinho? nope!

even if arsenal bought m’vila, is he better than arteta. nope!

arsenal would have blown around 40 million on crap players and still don’t have a playmaker for van persie to link up with on the pitch.

this is, without a doubt, my worst day as an arsenal fan. i thought the day paddy left was bad. this is something else. we are, literally, staring into the abyss.

  4. joshuad 4 July, 2012 at 17:42 Log in to Reply

it doesn’t matter who we try and bring in now, no big player will want to come to arsenal. arsenal have officially blown it.

  5. joshuad 4 July, 2012 at 17:35 Log in to Reply

not even discussed financial terms because he doesn’t agree with the team’s direction. foolish to lose rvp this way. who will want to come to arsenal now?

  6. George 4 July, 2012 at 17:28 Log in to Reply

So, RVP’s not signing a new contract. Bit disrespectful imo after the way the club’s looked after him during his injury hit years but yeah he wants to win trophies fair play to him. Turns out him and arsene disagree over things, Im sure Stag will say its because Wenger wants to make money and RVP wants to win trophies.

Anyway, do we let his contract run down and keep him for another year or do we try and get £25+ million for him and sign a replacement now?

And if we do decide to sell and replace who would you guys want? I would say Falcao or Higuain personally – either one has scored bucketloads of goals this season. Id rather have Higuain, might be frustrated at lack of playing time but still scored 25 goals i think this season. Sell RVP for 25 to someone and get Higuain for 20, younger player and make a profit as well – which apparently is all our club is about

    • stag133 4 July, 2012 at 22:00 Log in to Reply

@George, are you saying thats not the case?
It is FACT that the club have NO AMBITION.
What else would make RVP say, I am not even going to discuss financial terms?
Its CLEARLY not about money. He’ll be paid handsomely here, or anywhere he goes. He wants a “CHANCE” to win something… and Wenger and the Board have made it clear, once again, to a captain… that its NOT what they are in it for.

NEVER will let his contract run down. ZERO chance.
and we’ll NEVER get anything close to 25 Million now… we’ll be lucky to get 18 to 20 Million.
Teams can low-ball us, because they know we have NO CHOICE but to sell him…

I don’t really care who we bring in…. its not relevant.
There has to be CHANGE in ownership, the board, and the manager.

Wow. A whole of new traffic on the site, some comments do look like spurs fans. I think Wenger is satisfied with our Belgian, French and German in defense and is not going to get a startet, I wouldn’t unless I am selling on of those 3 with djorou and Squal leaving probably. I am a little concerned that Podolski might not turn out great if he is played in the Gervinho role, hope he is managed well there. Lastly, I think Wenger will give Diaby one more chance. Look at rvp, Wenger gave this guy forever to prove him right and he did!! So Diaby will be our trump card this season, when he decides to play he is magical. But even more inconsistent and lack of real belief than Walcott!! Apologies for the bad spelling. Wrting o n my phone, also Alba for 11 milliom euros!!! WTF h

    • stag133 4 July, 2012 at 02:13 Log in to Reply

@george Kenya, George, RVP never had anything close to the injury problems that Diaby has… Diaby hasn’t played consecutive matches in FOREVER… and he hasn’t been special when he has played. Moments of magic… in rare glimpses… is all he has ever done. It is time to release him… he will never come close to being reliable, and his salary is a waste of money.

I am sure Wenger thinks our defense is just fine, I agree… because he probably thinks allowing 49 goals is OK.
That’s the fear… that Bould will not be allowed to have much influence… and once again we won’t address the defense that has cost us any chance of winning anything for about 5 years straight.

  8. ben 3 July, 2012 at 16:55 Log in to Reply

    @stag133,

hmm I agree that bosingwa wouldnt want to play second fiddle, but sagna is almost 30 now,and the only other cover for him would be jenkinson, and I think he needs at least another 2years to ne considered as a starter – good squad player and cover accoss back line though.what other right backs are available which are affordable, internationally proven and can cope with epl??? plus sagna probs won’t be recovered fully for start of season, and who knows how leg break will affect him?.. also, bosingwa wpuld have a sell on value of around £4mil next year…van de weil could be good for future, but I wasnt impressed at euros, plus chelski apparently want him and would cost upwards of £10mil…a.santos and gibbs will rotate a lot,as at similar level I thinks, and the rb pos.could do the same,as we play upwards of 55 comp.games a season.

in regard to kalou, hmm yes our front line is strong, but who can play in gervinhos position, and help him adapt better?plud he proved himself at chelski, esp.in champions league. plus,we were apparently trying to buy him last winter for £7mil,and wenger likes him.as is 27,sell on value could be around £12mil,maybe more (or less)dep.on performances.

totally agree flamini is probs a non-starter,but would be a good addition,as he can play rb,lb,cdm,cm and more attacking aswel,I.e thr perfect squad player to fill in.also knows the system and can help younger players.would also have a sell on value of around £6mil if sold next year,as is 27 or 28

lastly, hoilett is one we shouldnt pass up on.young at 22 or 23,developing,exciting,and could be wort between £10-15mil.also I think the ox needs to be loaned out to get loads of exp.,as he wont get that much time on field next year, and we dont want his dev.to be stunted

who do you think we need at rb and cdm?

    • stag133 3 July, 2012 at 18:14 Log in to Reply

@ben, I really have ZERO interest in anyone’s “sell on value”…
All the club care about is profit, as a fan, I could not care less how much we sell players for…
I want us to WIN TROPHIES, not try and make as much money as possible.

I would prefer we focused on bringing in defenders.
I can’t see us having both Boswinga AND Sagna at RB. Just goes against everything Wenger does… he has one starter, and one kid who will eventually take the job, in his mind…
He sees Jenkinson there, and though I agree, who knows when and what Sagna will be like upon return…

I like Hoilett as a player, but I think the Ox can play NOW.
We should have him in the line-up regularly. He proved that last year. And as you said… with so many matches to play, he can get regular playing time. You know there will be injuries for us, there always are… so the Ox should be with the big club. He can definitely contribute.

I like the idea of M’Vila, I just don’t think we are really going to buy him. I think its a smoke-screen by the club, to keep the fans at bay… they like to throw out names, and we all get excited, and they never really plan to buy the player…

I’d like to see us try to hi-jack the Vertonghen deal from Spurs, or go get a stay at home, big physical CB … at whatever cost is necessary.

With a Defensive minded CB, and a Defensive Midfielder who shields the back 4, and Steve Bould hopefully having some influence on the defense… we might be able to be a lot more stable at the back, which is very necessary if we plan on winning anything.
You can’t win trophies giving up the 8th or 9th most goals in the league.
Nobody wins the league or CL giving up that many goals. NEVER.

If Lansbury can’t get near the first team, whats the point?

  10. ben 3 July, 2012 at 00:44 Log in to Reply

    I know everyone will scream Nooo,but I don’t care..
we need an establisher proven rb,1 to, cover injured sagna on return or double leg break, and 2,to provide solid rotational options,as this position is very fatiguing.also aagna reaching 30,so would extend his career lifespan.I recommend boswinga.proven.bit unreliable defensively but good attacking (andre santos?haha),and FREE!!also recommend kalou.same as above, and can mentor gervinho and rotate a game on and off each. forget about them being ex chelsea players.big clubs take from thier rivals.g-d knows every big club has taken from us. these two players are free and can hit the ground running, provide exp.and cover, and give us extremely strong options amd bench….add a,defensive mid (flamini haha free again..) but who loves defending.also streal vertonghen from spuds (or at very least drive his price up for them haha), and we have a team that can compete on all levels,in all competitions, and manage with the ridiculous injuries we get! …

asides from hating chelski players and even flamini, analysing non-emotionally,these,r very good players which can make a big diff. I would also get hoilett on a free, esp.if walcott pushing for a move..shame we can’t also get benayoun.

anyways, I think this would be a banging team, which could rotate to play at highest level 2 or 3 games a week.

    • stag133 3 July, 2012 at 02:11 Log in to Reply

@ben, OK, well, Boswinga and Sagna, are not going to “rotate” games… at this point in the prime of their careers. Sorry. He’s a good player, but I can’t see it happen. We DO need a right back in my opinion, as a back-up, but Wenger spent on Carl Jenkinson, even though he has been toasted regularly against better competition…. Wenger will stick by him.

Flamini is signed, pretty sure… just read an article that he signed for AC Milan for about half the salary he was getting previously.
and Wenger doesn’t bring back players that bailed on him… he isn’t bringing Hleb back either…

Only Arsenal sell or lose their best players to rivals in the same league!
(though Liverpool probably think they took Chelsea for 50 Mill on the Torres deal!)

I am pretty sure we are all set with offensive players … unless you are talking the Cesc Fabregas level of playmaker. We just bought 2 players, both forwards.

Now, I am 100% with you on Vertonghen… but I am afraid Wenger sees nothing wrong with a defense that let in 49 goals last season, and has no stay at home defender in the entire squad…

      defense, defense, defense.
      please.
we need help at DM, and CB… and pray that somehow Wenger allows Steve Bould to have some impact on
      defensive training.

@WaynecommentW, He hasn’t been released. His club just wants to sell him, but it is going to cost a lot for a keeper who may well be a backup. That money is better spent strengthening the team in other places (RB, DM) and spending less money on an experienced keeper as a backup.

Is there really any wonder as to why Theo Walcott would expect a raise, when there are players like Squillaci, Denilson, Chamakh… making 50K to 60K per week, and they contributed ZERO to the team. We don’t want them close to the pitch!

It is always an interesting Summer at Arsenal FC.
    Always.
There is a lot to do, both coming and going. But our recent history says very little will occur either way… we value or flotsam and jetsum, and won’t let it drift away for cheap money!
    and
questions on players like Arshavin & Denilson and Chamakh… on whether we can actually get anyone to pay the fee we imagine they are worth.

    Enjoy the fun.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for all the activity from the offices @ The Emirates!

Seeing as Almunia is gone, Fabianski looks likely to go and Martinez although promising and highly-rated is very inexperienced, who do you think we should get as a back-up/more experienced role model/tutor for Szczesny who needs GOOD competition? I would say Gordon as he has experience and is available on a free, but what do you lot think?

@George, If you are talking about Flash Gordon, I’m all for it… great reflexes and speed!

If you mean Craig Gordon? he’s been injured for about 2 years, so we don’t really need any additional perma-crocks, because our record on rehabilitating injured players has been atrocious!
See: Jack Wilshire, who is somehow supposed to miss the start of the season, even though he missed the ENTIRE last season.

I’d rather keep Fabianski… but back-up keeper really isn’t high on my priority list when we’ve let in 49 goals, and have done nothing with the defense or DM area.

        @stag133,
But don’t you think Szczesny needs someone to keep him on form? look at the end of the season where he was nothing short of awful and thats because he’s got no good competition

@George, George, its probably more due to the fact that the DEFENSE SUCKS!!!
We have piss poor defending, especially on set-pieces… how many free headers a year do we have to watch… and that leaves the keeper with no chance.

I don’t want to waste any money on a back-up keeper… and if we get one, why not promote someone from below.
Craig Gordon was the most expensive keeper EVER BOUGHT by a Premier League team, before De Gea, and he was the biggest bust ever at that position as well…
I don’t want any part of him… but that’s just me.
Who knows what Wenger will do… I wouldn’t expect much, and I wouldn’t expect a keeper of note, than anyone knows.
Because Wenger knows better than everyone, in his mind.
