Joint posting by DAG and Myles J Burrell.

There isn’t a lot anyone can say about yesterday apart from “utter disappointment.” Despite our previous run that saw us move from 17th to 4th our squad isn’t as strong as it should be for a club that considers itself perennial title contenders.

For sure there were a lot of reasons we lost on Sunday. It has been gone over ad nauseum in the press and on other blogs. Some say it’ts injuries others say it was bad calls by the ref. I say it’s easy to blame injuries and bad calls but it really boils down to not having a good enough squad. When fit (there it is again) we have a good starting XI. I think Szczesny, Sagna, Vermalen, Koscielny, Santos, Song, Wilshere Arteta, Van Persie, Gervinho and Walcott are as good as any 11 in the top 6 clubs. If anyone can remember when a squad remotely looking like that hit the pitch let us know.

More than any other reason, more than the dreadful passing, or the fact that we made Swansea look like Barcelona, it was our squad players and their poor performance that ultimately was the reason for a performance that was as crappy as any this season. Arshavin was non-existent, Yossi Benayoun for all his energy and running around wasn’t winning the ball in the middle of the park. And our fill in fullbacks while the have put in a yeoman effort aren’t fullbacks and its shows – alot.

We should expect drop off when squad players come in. That’s why they are squad players. What we don’t want is such a drastic drop in form that we look more reminiscent of West Brom than Arsenal. Simply put when we have injuries to players like Wilshere and Arteta we should be able call on capable players who, whilst they won’t light up the league, can do justice to being part a member of the Arsenal squad.. Right now we don’t have that.

Before the our frantic buying session at during the last two days of the summer window, all we had managed to do is sign a kid (a very talented Mr Chamberlain  from nPower League One side Southampton for £7million (eventually rising to £15million), Gervinho, who took 9 weeks to sign (but a bargain at £10.7million), Jenkinson (another League One hotshot for £1million), and then flogged the rest of our chalk. Eboué went for £4million to Galatasaray, nobody bats an eyelid, suddenly our whole squad leaves and you think “was £4million worth it?”, never mind, what’s done is done. Then there’s the hot-out-of-hell Arsenal villain Nasri who picked a spot on the bench at Man City for £200K a week, transfer fee of £24million. Losing Nasri seemed fine, but that was with the expectation we would replace him with someone of similar, if not better, quality, cue Eden Hazard. As for Fabregas, it only seems like common sense that we signed an adequate replacement BEFORE we sold him, yet that never happened. It was inevitable that Fabregas would leave this past summer so why spend so long dallying over an outbound transfer and spend no time at all looking on bringing players in.

But then, inbound…  Two of our left-backs have gone (Clichy and Traoré), leaving Kieran
Gibbs on his own with who as back-up? George Brislen-Hall (who we re-signed after releasing)? I thought: “****” we’re flapping our arms in the deep end now, but then out of nowhere appeared André Santos. Santos in fairness has been a revelation but with his injury and Gibbs’ constantly injured we need more cover – now.  We “supposedly” planned a £12million bid for Baines, but like 95% of all Arsenal transfers, nothing materialised so we went for the cheaper option. Park Chu-Young as a replacement for Bendtner? I don’t see why not, although I’d rather we lost Chamakh than Bendtner. The point is at least we signed someone, even if he does have to leave for military service when he’s 28 (look it up if you don’t believe me). Per Mertesacker, 6’6” and has a good disciplinary record, why not? The deal was done fast and he’s only 26, good move for the future.

Benayoun?  Fair enough it’s just a loan, but reeks of a  “panic buy” and this is what we need to avoid if we are going to continue to grow as a club, even if Yossi is a decent squad player.

And to top it all off, we got MIKEL ARTETA who was a good and solid signing for Arsenal. Arteta is, in my opinion, exactly what we needed; he’s creative, experienced, and hungry to play (in Europe, we know he wasn’t starved of football at Everton). The icing on the cake: he took a £10k per week wage cut to play for us, shows how much he wanted the move and it shows how much he wants to be an Arsenal player. If you still don’t believe how good Arteta has been for this team you only need look at yesterday to see how open the middle of the pitch was without him there.

However, despite the all the signings, we’re still left with this weakened squad and a mountain of cash stockpiled on a varnished wooden table in the boardroom.

As for the lack of drive behind the scenes, I’m not sure who to blame here, is it Wenger? Yes. Is it the board? Most certainly yes to that as well. We’re left with one big problem which Wenger and the board are big parts of. Wenger is (arguably) too stubborn to change his ways when, let’s face it, his ways aren’t working anymore. The board lack any sense of direction whatsoever and only seem to care about lining their pockets with our money. It’s all a bit too much, and with Danny Fiszman no longer with us, it only seems right that we bring back David Dein to the board as well as giving a place to Usmanov (Red & White Holdings). There would be nothing wrong with having those two on the board, why? David Dein was always an influential figure in driving the club forwards (when he was here) but with him gone, everything seems to have taken a turn for the worst. Dein was known for backing Wenger’s transfer wishes, but with Silent Stan & Co not caring at all, there appears to be a chasm of separation between Wenger and the board and it’s hurting us, Dein and Usmanov could bridge that gap.

Why Usmanov you ask? Why on earth not?! It is evidently clear that the current model isn’t working. We are bereft of new ideas. We keep trying to do the same thing over and over and it doesn’t work. Hasn’t worked and won’t work unless someone brings something new to the table.

Alisher Usmanov is on record as saying that he “loves” Arsenal.  He’s also thrown the gauntlet down by not selling his 29% stake in the club (Red & White Holdings) to Silent Stan during his brisk takeover of the club. The fans need a voice on the board, and that voice is Usmanov.

Arsenal are in serious trouble now. There is now way anyone could or should paper over that fact. 7 losses by mid-season is devastating. For the first time in 15 years the club are in the position of being on the outside looking in on Europe’s most prestigious competition and the cash cow they depend on. Wenger made it clear that for a club like Arsenal this is an absolute minimum. Well, unless the team do something about the squad we won’t even achieve the minimum. Which means in my book the manager and board have failed. It’s time to move the eyes from the ledger and do something about the makeup of the squad.

“From a financial point of view, not qualifying for the Champions League is quite a blow,” admitted Hill-Wood. “We have been planning for not qualifying every year, so it’s not a disaster, but it would be nice if we could.”

Has it ever occurred to this blockhead that there is much, much more to football than finances? WTF. The fans don’t care about the bottom line unless the quality of the team is directly affected by it. But Arsenal seem to put mediocre quality on the pitch regardless of their profit margin. Non-stop complaining about the club’s failure to invest their riches for what? The last 7-8 transfer windows now? And he talks about finances right in the middle of yet another dead transfer window, right after two consecutive league losses? Is this man deaf? Or maybe just stupid. Is he aware he’s running a FOOTBALL CLUB? Or is the word ‘Arsenal’ just another piece of info on an income statement?

Oh no! Not finishing in the top 4 would be a disaster for my club financially! But it’s okay- the superrich owners who profit off of fans’ love for the club have prepared for it for several years- thank God!! Does he think this is the thought process of Arsenal fans? Does he realize what we actually care about is having a fun and competitive team?

      @ChicagoGooner, I would say he’s CLUELESS.
And that ever since Dein left the club, the management / board have
not had a fecking clue as to what the hell they are doing in terms of
the actual FOOTBALL on the pitch…

It is really disheartening and pathetic to witness.

        @stag133, Or maybe he’s so
        Clueless that he’s brilliant…..

IF the sole goal of ownership is to make $$$ the making of
Clueless statements about finances IN the middle of the
Transfer Window in order to outrage the supporters,
While a ready-made pair of Jesuses (Usmanov and Dein) wait
In the Wings…. Well, that’s genius baby! (Or, at least,
It’s better poetry than I can write with my (ersatz)
        Haiku stylings….

If you do the slightest bit of investigation about the
Wal-Mart clan, you will see that it’s all about the
Worship of the Almighty $$$….They have destroyed small-
Town, small business and shipped manufacturing (of crap)
Overseas, while food comes from further and further afield
With cheap prices being underwritten on the backs of
Mexican workers. If “fans” of Walmart still want to keep the
Wealthiest Americans untaxed while (spending Government $$ to
Build a Wall and Deport ’em All)….I say good luck to
Yellow and Black scarves or whatever other forms of protest
You will have. On the other hand, I don’t see Kronke/PHW
Trying to raise ticket prices again this spring….

The bottom line is that the board serves at the pleasure of
The owner and the manager serves at the pleasure of the
Board and this group has sold out. If there was one
Character, who I actually think is upset about the situation
It would be Arsene Wenger. Others, of course, see him as the
        Architect….

The wise punter, at this point, would see that it’s all about
positioning. Odds favor (debt-ridden, carrying plenty of
Overpriced players….) Liverpool and us to finish
Outside the Top 4. ‘Arry up the 7 Sisters will
Bankrupt our rivals but they’ll at least have another run in
The CL next year. (If they do, we’re talking Nasri-style
Wages for Adebayor, Modric and Bale….If things are bad
Enough, Kronke may cash out and Usmanov, Dein (and possibly
Wenger) will ride in to save the Day. It’s possible
that we could win by losing….so (Mr. 133, et al) maybe you
Should root for United this weekend….

Or maybe not. Personally, I hope we beat United on Sunday,
Beat Spurs, beat Chelsea, beat AC Milan and take care of
Other business (including a promising transfer or two)
As it arises. Would I bet on it. Sorry, I may be an (hippie)
        Optimist, but I’m not STUPID….

          @HighburyTerraceSteve, DAG,
Thanks for unspamming (un-banning?) me. Still (obviously)
Struggling with the format in the reply boxes. Also,
While normally I would (maybe) re-read my post with an eye to
Edit it, I’ve got to agree with those who complain about the
          Gray background….

Sorry, I don’t mean to bitch & moan, esp. in these trying days….
At least, it’s not about the team (this time)…..

        • stag133 18 January, 2012 at 18:47

          @HighburyTerraceSteve, Its pretty simple.
If Wenger wanted to bring in players and spend money on the team,
he could say so, and walk away…
He could get a job as manager at about 20 teams, tomorrow.

He is PART of the problem, not part of the solution.

          No, I don’t root for losses… can’t do it.
However, when we lose, it doesn’t bother me much at all.
          a) its expected
          b) it means there is more pressure on the club to do something to
address the issues, because the fans start circling the stadium…

I see another loss on Sunday.
But we could win… its been a crazy season in the EPL and CL.
Long term, you might be correct. Losing might be better for the fans/club…

It’s all tiring… sad… and makes me want to watch Arsenal less, and watch other teams in other divisions and leagues more…

Without the supporters, the club does into the toilet.
The fans need to enforce that fact.
          February’s first game after a NON-ACTIVE window.
          Just don’t show up.
          or
Don’t buy ANYTHING at the stadium… I think people can
go 2 hours without buying a damned thing!
          How effective would that be?
Nobody in any line to buy anything at a match.
          ZERO for concessions.
The message would be VERY LOUD and VERY CLEAR.

Here is this years HARSH REALITY… showing we simply are NOT competing for trophies or against the best teams:

Lost to Man City twice… once in the League, once in the CC.
    Lost to Liverpool at home.
Lost to ManU in humiliating fashion, 8-2.
    Lost to Tottenham.

We have of course lost to teams that wouldn’t dream of beating us about 3 or 4 years ago, as well…

but the only significant win was 5-3 at Chelsea, and they were really on a bad run of form… and we needed a great 2nd half to get that done. It didn’t look promising at the half.

So, how can we except to win anything, when we simply can’t beat good teams head to head…. we are not seen as a threat by the better teams… and the minnows see the possibility of taking the Arsenal scalp as well…
there is ZERO intimidation … against any team in the league, home or away.

    its gone.

@stag133, no argument’s here. it’s really a shame because we have a decent goal keeper, a fairly decent back four and a solid midfield. the problem is in the attacking third and i’m obviously not implying van persie. what are the rest of the guys up front doing?

the way i see it is if arsenal aren’t competing for the bpl championship, then they haven’t earned the right to play in the champions league. what are the players, the manager, or the club doing to earn that right?

i’m not an advocate of buying players in january, as that need shows a lack of preparation. but this appears to be one of the times when arsenal needs to spend. first, we need a special player who can help arsenal in attack to secure maximum points for the rest of the season. second, we need a special player who van persie will enjoy playing with; one whose special talent will complement van persie’s talent making it easier for him to extend his arsenal contract instead of refusing to sign. this is rvp’s last big contact so it’s got to be for the right team. right now, arsenal doesn’t look right. they haven’t replaced the special talent that samir and cesc brought to the team.

the team has good players but arsenal need a special player in attack that van persie will enjoy coming to training to play with every day. that increases his chances to win silverware as well as increasing his chances of signing an extension. we will see.

@joshuad, notice how many times i used the word “special”. very deliberate

      • stag133 18 January, 2012 at 14:18 Log in to Reply

        @joshuad, Josh.
I really don’t think we have a solid back 4 at all.
You can’t count on Vermaelen, as he has been injured for about a year straight… and he is by
far our best and most consistent CB… I don’t think much of Mertz, as he’s slow and not very agile, and for someone his height, not very good in the air.

Koscielny doesn’t impress me much either. Has some good games and some bad, but is not very consistent… and other than Sagna, there is not a Full Back in the team that is solid defensively.

IMHO, we needed CAHILL… a proven CB who is durable and knows the league. We wanted him the Summer, but the price was too high, but now we don’t want to spend 7 Million for him? Makes no sense at all.

Midfield without Gervinho, is LACKING in attack… and without Arteta, we’re POOR in creative vision…

We do not have the necessary players for 4 competitions and a long hard British Winter of football… haven’t for 5 years…
and the Striker / Special player alongside RVP is a DEFINITE NEED… again, has been for a long time…. but we continue to BS the fans and refuse to address glaring issues. With no signings in January, we will NOT finish Top 4… and we could easily go the rest of the season without beating any team that’s “good”.

one other thing, leighton baines sucks. he gets hyped up in the english media as he strikes the ball nice enough but can’t defend to save his life. nacho mike is a better defender.

being a fan, i support wenger and the club. however, i agree with stag in that i’d like to know what’s being discussed in the board room. bottom line is we don’t know. we have no other choice but to trust the judgment of the leadership and gripe to each other about what it seems they’re missing.

my biggest gripe is the famed “top four trophy”. it’s bs and shouldn’t even be mentioned as a “minimum” target or any other kind of target; especially by the manager or players. such an attitude breeds complacency that leads to defeats against the likes of blackburn and swansea. as long as it’s mathematically possible, arsenal should be trying to win the league, full stop. the current team isn’t strong enough. it’s built with players who lack either the desire or ability to give arsenal a cutting edge.

arshavin, gervinho, ramsey, or walcott finishing when put through on goal should be the norm. it’s become the exception and you’re surprised when one of them actually scores a goal. if they can’t score or create regularly and aren’t improving, why are they playing every week? if they’re not good enough, the boss needs to call that spade a spade; that is if he’s trying to win the league. whenever arsenal fought to actually win the championship, they never had to worry about a top four finish as that always took care of itself. maybe that’s why they call it the champions league.

the other glaring problem is the lack of leadership. only vermaelen and arteta seem capable of providing it. we can’t rely on a striker to guide the team as he has to focus on scoring. without leadership, you tend to get out-played when you go to places like swansea, regardless of your talent.

I’m sick and tired of hearing that Arsenal has a big team. The reality is that out of three forwards, on RvP is worth putting on the field. The backup keeper is really the fourth string keeper but Arsene can’t get rid of him. There is no faith in Squillaci. Diaby and Gibbs can’t even make breakfast without getting injured. Then there’s Andrey who only plays when Gervinho is out. That’s what, seven players? It’s not a big team when you can only count on 2/3 of them. I’m really torn between wanting this team to do well and hoping they finish out of the top four so the team will actually be improved.

  9. George 17 January, 2012 at 19:38 Log in to Reply

Arsene has called for the players to show a response after our dreadful run of form. Doesn’t the same apply to Wenger’s transfer action (or lack of). We need to flog off the sh*t, Wenger has been saying the squad is too crowded for whoever world class player were looking for, but we’ve got a squad filled up with players who aren’t getting games. Wenger plays a 19 year old over Squillaci, which shows how much faith he has in him, Park has yet to play a single minute of PL football since he moved, he’s played 3 Carling Cup Games and 60 mins of a CL game and its Mid-January. Diaby plays 25 minutes and is out for weeks, I know Wenger wants to show faith in him but seriously, if he is blocking a moving for Gourcuff/Gotze or whoever, then we should move him on. And we should cut our losses and get rid of that lazy Russian too, pave the way for the Ox to get some games, at least he tries to make stuff happen. Hell, we could even play Rosicky on that left side, like the way we played Nasri last season.

We are in danger of not meeting Wenger’s “Fourth place requirement/Trophy” and this is a squad which is meant to be challenging for the league every season, and were supposed to be happy with a Top 4 finish? If we don’t make fourth place this season (Which unless we invest this January we probably won’t) it will be humiliating as we won’t even meet our own low standards. But the board will keep on stuffing their pockets, and they expect us to pay £50 per game? Its a joke.

TBH, Wenger is at fault but this squad needs additions, and only Silent Stan and the rest of the muppets on this board can give Wenger the cash to buy some players. Yes the first priority of a business is to make money, but the first priority of a FOOTBALL CLUB is to make the fans want to watch this team, and most importantly to win things

    • stag133 18 January, 2012 at 03:31 Log in to Reply

@George, you know what always happens when Wenger asks for a response or states that it is time for his young players to mature and step up in a big game… we lose. Happens every time.

Yet I still read on blogs that we are just fine, and Wenger is the man, and this is just a blip…
(seriously, I send you a link if you want!)

Unfortunately, I actually believe we might have to get beat again on Sunday by ManU at home, in order for there to be enough outcry from the “supporters”… that once again, the club will be FORCED to buy players.

WHY in the world the club need to be backed into a corner with bad results and a litany of injuries, before it buys needed players to compete, only a few really know, and they are on the inside, waiting to write the book “From Invincibles to HELL”…
I personally would give anything to know what the hell actually goes on in that boardroom or behind the scenes discussions about what the plan is for the club, and for the team on the pitch (they seem to be at odds!)…

We need action… quickly… decisively…, and we need men of action to force it…
I would love to see David Dein back in the fold… but I don’t know that anyone can change the course that Wenger has set… I think he’s truly too far gone…

      @stag133, Ha ha….I’m a hippie, AKB,
      Rump-Swab (that one I like….) and you’re….well, just a dreamer….

Check out today’s Arseblog or, better yet, 7amkickoff for tough takes from
Usually positive (and very good) bloggers….Tim really lays into the
Tactical response we showed (or didn’t) in response to Swansea pressure….

(Obviously) I think next week’s match is massive. I also think that doing
Something in the window would be a nice statement of intent from
Management. Somehow we have to morph into a team that thrives on pressure
Because we’re up against it. As such, as many (including I) have
Maintained, players need others breathing down their neck for playing time,
And we need a manager who is not constrained by best case scenarios–
Is there any other reason than blind hope (and his transfer cost….)
That a player like Arshavin can even wear the shirt, let alone get on the
      Pitch?

Dreaming that we’re a signing or three away or that David Dein and
GazRubles will be like flicking on a light-switch and the
Darkness will suddenly be gone….It’s optimism of another sort….
Well, at least you’ve got dreams…..

Tough times, but don’t complain too much or Thierry Henry might get upset…

Ha, pipped again….with my comments in the previous thread posted simultaneous to the new article. Paranoia is setting in for sure….

As I’ve said many times, I think it’s overly convenient to suggest that Arsene and the board/ownership are in lockstep. For me, it’s clear that AW bought (and sold…) the notion that Top 4 is the big prize but had hopes (before Chelsea and City huge money and United, ‘Pool, Spurs big debt) that if things fell into place we could compete for the top prizes. Those days are gone….

I’ve also suggested that a huge payday looms for Kronke (who, like the Walmart family he married into, worships the almighty $….) if Usmanov is ready with his GazRuples to do a big buyout and join Abramovich and Sheik Mansour in an oligarchy of three at the top of English football. For me, given that hoping for crumbs from the world’s richest men doesn’t seem quite right, it’s a bit distasteful for supporters to be stumping for such a scenario, but that’s just me….It seems to be the state of things, however, and at least Wenger and the board (personal fortunes notwithstanding), through the stadium construction, have the club well poised for “world domination”…..Given the difficulties on the continent for some of the traditional “state supported” clubs (Real, Barca, AC Milan, Juve, Bayern, anybody else?) it’s all a bit murky. Defaults/Bailouts/Etc. could be watchwords….

Another route which also seems somewhat likely is moving English and European football to a more North American style scenario with revenue sharing and other equity measures. Arsenal are well positioned there as well and if “fair play” rules were to actually be enforced, we’d be in a lovely spot. With Sheiks and oligarchs running the show (note the location of the recently awarded World Cups….) holding one’s breath seems ill-advised…..

My personal hopes are several: That we invest in the team in the current window with talent for the short term and long by getting some real talent (not just prospects or stop-gaps). Subtraction might be necessary as well. Surely Arshavin must have some value in St Petersburg, Moscow or Dagestan…..I also hope that we can at least give United a game at home next weekend and maybe eke out a result AND that doing so won’t be an excuse for not moving forward on deadline day action–I’m concerned (see last thread) about miracle recoveries and “likeanewsignings”. To get up for 4th we need to be just about perfect from here to the barn, including 3 points from every home match, including next weekend’s and those against Chelsea, Spurs, City and Newcastle.

I mention the last team because, if they can get a result at Fulham (where we failed) and Liverpool get one at Bolton, while we do as expected (lose) vs ManU, we will fall to 7th in the table. It might spark something extra for the deadline, but it will also, in a word, suck….
