You Are My Arsenal Podcast: S3E1 The one where we’re still hopeful

Ah, the Arsenal has returned. The Premier League and Champion’s League seasons have kicked off for the Gunners and it means its also kicked off for all of us wanna be radio pundits aka podcasters. Not wanting to be left out, the You Are My Arsenal Podcast is back for a 3rd season. This time hopefully with more regularity.

Anyway, the Gunners have hit the ground, not so much running, sputtering would be more like it. The win against Crystal Palace was a tedious affair, but its one of those matches that in the past Arsenal would’ve lost or drawn. The new attitude of the squad that we’ve seen develop over the last year or so is one of “never quit” to the final episode and they didn’t and came away with the 3 points.

On the road in Instanbul, a shoddy pitch, some poor touches and a lack of one Mesut Özil led to boys coming away with a 0-0 draw. Not the best result but not the worst either. With the return leg at the Emirates and all of the Germans set to return to the squad, there is more than enough to get the job done.

The key take away from these first two matches is that it’s early and drawing any type of conclusions about how good or bad this team will be is pointless. There were positives from all sides as well as negatives. However, its early yet and the team like many others looks to still be getting their overall match fitness down. With the exception of one team that seemed to be the same narrative across the league. Not one team looked crisp. Well, one did, but we won’t mention them.

The truth is we really won’t know where we are until about 5 games in. By then the squad should be match ready, playing more consistent flowing football. At least that’s the hope.  Additionally, we’re still likely to see some additions. I’m no ITK (I tried it once and failed miserably) but I got a gut feeling that we’ll see at a minimum two more additions before the window closes on 1 Sept.

So there is still reason for optimism friends and we talk about all of this and more with this week’s guest. Adrian Clarke (@adrianjclarke) from Arsenal.com joins us to discuss the early form and things that have stood out, both positively and negatively and what we can expect in the next few days with matches versus Everton and Besitkas on the schedule.

We’re back for another season and to follow the Arsenal hopefully to some more silverware. Thanks for joining us. If you have any comments or suggestions – like topics or guests you’d like us to have on, let us know right here in this space.

Until the next episode – stay goonerish!
