The Arsenal Week In Review: 7.24.2011

It’s another week down in the summer. And always the Arsenal have been the centre point of the sporting news. And honestly not for any good reason. Well, not for any bad reason either but just because we seem to be the easiest carcas to pick over.  Ah well, for whatever reason, year in and year out, we are everybody’s favourite wipping boy. But let’s get into it.

FC Cologne 1 – 2 Arsenal

Another week, and another friendly down the tubes. This one though wasn’t against some mindless Malaysian all-star team or some pub club from China, it was against a mid-table Bundesliga team, FC Koln and one of my favourite players Lukasz Podalski. If anything it would least give the Gunners a test on the pitch early to see where they are. So what did we learn? Well, we’re pretty much where we were last year – so far.

The squad that was on the pitch for the first half for the most part is our energetic group. It was anchored in the middle by by Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere. With Walcott, and new boy Gervhinho up front as well as Chamakh. And Gervinho did not fail to impress with two very nice goals to lead the attack. The first a skill shot with the inside of the foot over the goal keeper’s after a sublime over the top pass from Wilshere. Gervinho used his pace to get the ball and just dinked it over. It was class.

The second was a nice build up play with Gervinho getting the ball in the box, passing back to Ramsey who saw Walcott on the wing who used his own speed burst to beat the defender and feed Gervinho for a nice put away into the corner. While it’s only pre-season and I will not read too much into Gervinho’s successful start, it was at least a promising sign that Arsenal had a good signing.

The match was not without the bizarre (this is Arsenal after all). Carl Jenkinson who for the most looks like he could be a good addition as he matures, played what looked like a routine clearing and the mis direction of the ball cleared Szczesny’s head and hands and flipped into the net.  It is really one of the most bizarre own goals I’ve ever seen.

The second half was filled with a team with Rosicky anchoroing the middle with Nasri in his preferred position and frankly – I thought we looked lethargic.  The energy of Ramsey and Wilshere was missing from this tandem. Obviously Nasri has other issues on his mind and Rosicky is still – evidently – a shell of his former self.  It will be interesting to see what the team make up is come the start of the season. Because right now many of our youngsters are completely out hustling and outshining some of our more established players. It really comes down to hunger and skill, not skill alone. That is why some of our more talented players fail and others don’t. Its the hunger. You see it in Wilshere, Ramsey, and Van Persie. It is clearly missing from Nasri and Fabregas. No, I am not saying talent wise they are better but I like their talent and hunger combined than I do just Nasri and Fabregas’ talent.

Anyway, another bright spot is that for whatever reason Arshavin looks envigorated again. He has been lively in all three matches and yesterday had a shot that was lucky to be saved.  Here’s hoping that the Russian is going to get back to tway we know he can be rather than the way he has been for the last season and half. I mean come on – he was pitiful for most parts but still ended up with 10 goals. Imagine what an inspired Arshavin could do – I am thinking Euro 2008 Arshavin.

It’s another pre-season match down. The Emirates cup is next weekend. And that mean’s the return of Thierry Henry to the Emirates.

Cesc’s Situation

Another week ended and still no resolution on Fabregas. He’s still here. And we’re still not sure when it will end. I have an idea – how about we end it this week. Frankly this prolonged, drawn out saga is ridiculous. And I blame Barcelona. Seriously, you know what it is going to take to get the lad – if you want him – get it done.

I should add that there are signs that they are doing just that. Bojan is off to Roma for £11 million and a promising youngster is being sold to Chelsea for £5 million. All these sales we believe are part of the plan to cobble together the funds necessary to meet Arsenal’s asking price.  That is why I am of the mind that this will end – finally this week (or next). I do not see this dragging out.  Arsene has set a deadline and for once I believe him when he says he is going to maintain it.

Nasri

I believe that the situation we currently find ourselves in with Nasri is one the player or his represenatives had in mind going all the way back to when the first contact was made on a new contract towards the end of 2010. Reports were that Arsenal had tabled a new 5 year deal that fit into their wage structure. It would have brought him into the top tier of the club wages but not as high as Fabregas.

By February it looked like Nasri would sign the new deal. The club were fairly confident and it looked like a done deal. Hell, even reports from the player’s reps were saying as much. But then something happened. It wasn’t the downfall of the season as many would believe. Why do I believe that? Because his original offer happened when Arsenal still had 4 trophies to play for . So winning – wasn’t his impetus to reject the offer. It was clearly more money.

Arsenal have come back with an offer of £115,000 per week. Which would make him the highest paid player at the club. It is believed he rejected that offer still insisting he will go to City who reportedly would pay him around £150,000 per week.

If winning was what Nasri wanted then he would be after a deal to go to Manchester United not Manchester City. City are still not going to win the league nor will they win the Champion’s League. Hell, unless you are from Spain, you aren’t winning the Champion’s League. City are going through their own issues, Mancini is in a battle of wills with Gary Cook for control of the club and Tevez is pulling his own annual ritual of stay or go. City are an argument away form imploding. Until they can get rid of that – they will never win the league.

But I diguress. What I am trying to say is for Nasri, a kid from the streets of Marseille – its all about money. For most athletes its about money. There are rare few. Fabregas is one of them. His desire to move is born from something else. But for Nasri what he wants is a pay day equivalent to his perceived talent. Any other statement is disengenuous.

Frankly, it pains me to say this but we would be best served if he too moved on.

Transfer Rumblings

The transfer rumour mill was relatively quiet. We had Denilson go out on loan to Sao Paulo and some reserve players are going as well. Wenger came out and confirmed that he is still looking for defencive help.  But there was no clarity about who they were looking at.

The Daily Mail reported that pending the sale of Fabregas and possibly Nasri, Arsenal would sign Juan Mata and Villareal winger Santi Carloza. If it were true it would be the single outlay of cash that the club has made in any transfer market I can remember – as both fees would be around £20 million each. The players mentioned are good players and they would be great additions to the club but frankly I just don’t see it happening. It’s just too big a move. But hell, I thought Nasri and Fabregas leaving would never happen. That’s not exactly working out as I had planned.

2010/2011 Fantasy Football League Recap (by JROY)

Congratulations and thank you to all the winners and players who participated in the inaugural season of fantasy league football hosted by YAMA. An even bigger thank you goes out to DAG for putting it (and this site) together.  In all we had 14 participants who started the season with another 2 joining shortly thereafter.  As any fantasy manager knows there are always those moments where you wish you coulda shoulda woulda done something a little different.  I thought it might be fun to break down the season statistically to see how we all did as managers, the good, the bad, and the downright ugly.

Of course the table doesn’t lie, and a big shout-out goes to Schmurfs who (apparently) in his first attempt at fantasy football came out on top.  Well done!  Is this beginner’s luck or are the rest of us crap?  I guess we’ll find out next season.  Below is the final league table. A hearty congratulations to the top 5 teams who all finished in the top 3% of all participants on the ESPN website with the Schmurfs finishing an amazing 229th out of almost 50,000 participants at the beginning of the season.  Well done lads!

As you can see from the chart below Schmurfs started off slowly, but gained momentum throughout the season charging up the table in the final weeks in a very un-Arsenal like manner.  You might say that Poisoned Le Sagna had the most Arsenal like collapse, except that it started much earlier in the season…so we’ll have to give the award for the “most Arsenal like collapse” to Arsenal Red Cloud who fell off a cliff in the last two weeks of the season to finish fourth.

One of the things the chart shows is the relative consistency of the various managers.  Below are the Top 4 Managers (since we all know being in the top 4 is EVERYTHING…) based on average league position for the season.  Of course close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.  But this table does highlight just how well Schmurfs did in the closing weeks of the season.

Royz Boyz

Poisoned Le Sagna

I thought it might be interesting to see just how well the managers did on a week to week basis.  So I calculated who won the most weeks by scoring the highest number of points.  It was interesting to see that everyone outside of the bottom 4 managers won at least one week. And, of these 12 managers, all but two scored multiple wins.  It was good to see how competitive the league was and that it wasn’t just one or two managers dominating the proceedings.  Below are the Top 4 Managers with the most weekly wins, with a special shout-out to Dial Square who finished well off the pace but racked up quite a few weekly wins.

Arsenal Red Cloud

Royz Boyz

Schmurfs

Going one step further I thought we should see who scored the most and least points in a given game week in keeping with the good, bad and ugly theme.  No one was able to crack the century mark although a few managers did get very very close.  Incredibly there was a week when a few managers managed to score negative points, and it is not with some irony that Royz Boyz “won” both of the best and worst…

One of the interesting features of this particular fantasy league was the “captain’s pick” which allows a manager to select a player on the team to score double their point total for the week.  This is probably a good way to determine if a manager can identify the “hot foot” for the week and pick up some additional points.  Amazingly, three managers did not avail themselves of this option and picked up zero extra points.  Note reading instructions can be helpful… I calculated an “index” based on the top 4 players in each category and took their average score.  This represents what a manager might expect for choosing a player who finishes in the top 4 in their position at the end of the season and playing them as captain every week.  This is sort of the “no-skill” pick and doing so would have picked up 137 extra points for the manager over the season.  Unfortunately more than half our managers would probably have been better off NOT trying to pick the best player on their team each week and changing their pick… So, the Top 4 Managers who added the most value to their team through the use of the captain’s pick are:

MSCygEbo

205

Beagles

190

Arsenal Red Cloud

170

Royz Boyz

167

Congratulations to MSCygEbo who did the best job picking the best matchups each week.   I also thought it might be fun to see who wone the “most like Arsene Wenger award”.  This award goes to the manager who accumulated the most value for the board, errr team based on the ending value of the 15 players on the roster on the last day of the season.  Since I couldn’t see the “cash balance” of all the teams this was the fairest I could do it.  So, who bought low and sold high?  The best manager managed 15.6% “return” on the initial £100 at the start of the season. The Top 4 Manager’s are:

Royz Boyz

£115.6

Beagles

£115.4

Arsenal Red Cloud

£114.1

Schmurfs

£113.7

Finally, I thought I should give out the Tony Pullis award for the manager who seems to be a know-it-all, a great tactician, a wizard in identifying good players, who is generally loud, obnoxious, and annoying, and is the very definition of a mid-table manager.  This coveted award goes to Massive Attack managed by our very own stagg133. Congratulations on being average!

So with all that. . .

2011/2012 You Are My Arsenal Fantasy Football League

    @stag133,

    Admittedly, I was one of those. Seeing him play for the youth team I thought he was special, and he is. He just doesn’t have the fucking brains to realize what he could become if he applied himself.

    Major crossroads for the lad. He can refocus and become a great player or he can become another Pennant if he is semi lucky, or end up like a Justin Hoyte, banished to the lower leagues for the rest of his footballing career.

    What a waste of talent.

    3 years back I had JET, Wilshere, Gibbs and Bartley as future first teamers.

    So, yeah, ummmm another of our AMAZING crop of kids has had enough of Arsenal…

    J.E.T. is jettisoned to Ipswich… for 1 Million.

    Good business, right?

    There were more than a few of yall on here excited by this kid… now of course, he’ll go into the folder titled: not Arsenal quality

    whatever.
    2 1/2 weeks til the kickoff … Cesc and Nasri looking more and more likely to go, as Nasri is NOT signing any type of contract with Wenger and Arsenal UNWILLING to try and improve the team.
    I certainly don’t blame him… I wouldn’t sign either.
    The question is whether we’ll let him play out his contract and leave for free… that’s not the Arsenal way, we ALWAYS ca$h our better players in, we don’t let any chance at making money pa$$.
    So, I can see him being sold to ManU… at the last minute for 20 Million, and then we’ll have no chance to sign anyone to replace him.

    Cesc, probably gonna drag out until nearly the start of the season, … we’ll get 35 Million and a player from Barcelona, and we’ll probably sign Jagielka or Cahill or Samba for like 15 Million…
    HUGE profits, and that’ll be our team …

    NOT WATCHING ARSENAL FOOTBALL unless we bring in proper talent… could not care less about the Emirates Cup this weekend… I will watch QPR’s season in the Prem…

    I won’t play the SUCKER, sorry Arsene. :skeleton:

    • David Eshenbaugh 26 July, 2011 at 15:48 Log in to Reply

      @stag133, They sold JET because his attitude was apparently shit and he didn’t play with much deisre or effort. He certainly didn’t appear to impress anyone on his loan to Cardiff last year. The rest of your post? Sadly spot on.

    • DaAdminGooner 26 July, 2011 at 16:52 Log in to Reply

      @stag133,

      JET was jettisoned (pardon the pun) he didn’t go out on his own accord. The club had enough of his attitude and sent him packing.

        @DaAdminGooner,

        Yeah, I think he was the one who crashed his 100k+ sports car last year.

        • DaAdminGooner 26 July, 2011 at 20:48

          @Fred,

          Sounds about right.

        • stag133 27 July, 2011 at 00:47

          @DaAdminGooner, I never said I was an admirer of JET, and his game…

          I am simply pointing out that there were folks on THIS SITE who thought he was going to break into the 1st team…

          its laughable how many youngsters we send out…

        • David Eshenbaugh 27 July, 2011 at 12:28

          @stag133, Well of course people thought he might break into the first team. It’s obvious he has million dollar talent. Unfortunately he seems to have a 10 cent head.

          One thing I will give Arsene, is that for all his faults (and they are legion) he knows when kids aren’t going to make the grade. How many youth players are sold off and never do much with other teams? I would say the ratio is pretty high.

    Been away from the computer for a bit (highly recommended if Arsenal drives you mad)…..

    I’m back now and I see a little work’s been done on the “deadwood”…..Turkey (Eboue) to Turkey seems in the works. For me it’s a little sad that the joker could never turn serious, seeing as he seemed to have pace and a few skills….(I’ll always remember the cross to Henry for the late winner against United in our first match with them at the new stadium.) If the deal goes through maybe it might presage a more serious tone throughout the club; certainly Eboue (Club mascot and utility left winger?!?) has to be seen as one of AW’s larger indulgences….

    The Cesc and Nasri troubles seem far from concluded, which seems rough heading into August. As I’ve always maintained, I think it would be best for Cesc to stay and have a big season (or 2 or 3) with us before heading back to Barca as a conquering hero (rather than prodigal son) when Xavi and/or Iniesta are clearly failing. It’s a dream scenario (for everybody) of course, and Cesc may not have it in him (and his hamstrings) to make it happen. If we can get 35-40 million pounds for a guy who can only play limited minutes (due to injury for us or because Barca has players ahead of him) we shouldn’t be too sad. He is clearly the sort of player who, if healthy and committed, could get us (or Barca) a total of 30 (or more) assists plus goals which might be enough to win some trophies. His chances of getting and/or staying healthy are WAY higher down there, however…..And before Stag (or others) say…”Who cares about the money, we won’t spend it”….. Don’t forget that in addition to transfers, we’ve got wages to pay and contracts to increase (i.e., Nasri’s, maybe)…..That being said, if he does go, I think the pressure to spend something for somebody who (ostensibly) might bolster our midfield will be intense.

    But at least we’ve already brought in goalscorers! Gervinho and Jenkinson with (a total of) 3 vs Koln!!! Carl or Carlitos (Vela–or Gervinho)? Who is the better chipper?…..Now just another young defender to compete with Verm/Kos/Djou ahead of our young polish keeper(s)…. At least Squillaci stood his ground after defending the high line by grabbing a Koln player’s arm and jersey (in the highlights from the friendly…..) What else are you gonna do if you’re too old and too slow?……

    And speaking of old and slow defenders…..I WILL try to defend my lucky and very late win in the YAMA fantasy league (Great write-up, Jroy!) I really did get very, very lucky….right down to my final week captain Theo Walcott, coming off the bench to score a meaningless goal against Fulham. It WAS my first time trying such a thing and it was a thrill. I highly recommend it as a way of finding interest beyond the frustration inherent in supporting the Arsenal. What about a CL pool? I think I remember Ozi (the true fantasy king, even if he needs some money to keep him interested…..) saying something about something like that……

    OK, enough for now, more transfer titillation and the Emirates cup on the weekend…..Party on……

      @HighburyTerraceSteve,

      Cesc will return to Barca with all the fanfare he could possibly want, having been rescued from a moribund club coasting on a rep more than half a decade old. Any other ideas should be saved for the fantasy league.

      Intense pressure to bolster our midfield? You just wait until January! Then keep waiting.

    @fred, i’ve never implied vermaelen was the man to lead arsenal in the final third; merely suggested that if we were to have leadership there, it would most likely come from him. remember, i’m the guy that blamed everyone for kissing vermaelen’s ass last summer. i remember the vermaelen after gallas got injured. as far as i’m concerned, the jury is still out on that kid. my comment was to address the need for leadership in the final third.

    i call cesc a support striker because most of the time, he’s the furthest player forward except for our center forward. even our wide players on the front line aren’t as far forward as fabregas. it looks an awful lot like a 4-5-1 to me.

    i compared cesc to vieira and petit because vieira was the arsenal am before cesc. likewise, petit was the arsenal am before vieira. arsenal attacking midfielders in succession: petit, vieira, fabregas. kindly explain how that comparison is retarded. next, compare their trophies. lastly, tell where cesc fits in the invincibles team that was full of competent midfield players.

    in the ’08-’09 season, denilson had 3 goals and 6 assists in the first 18 games of the season. that’s half a goal a game. kindly name three deep-lying players (ie. cb/dm) that have produced .5 goals a game from that deep since beckenbauer retired over 20+ seasons ago and i will agree that my comparison of the two is without merit. surely, you can come up with three measly names off the top of your head with ease. and please don’t attempt the “denilson’s assists came from corners” bs argument again. that would be disrespectful. we watched arsenal play that season too and we all know that denilson had as many assists from corners that season as alex song had from corners this past season.

      @joshuad,

      Doubling down on your hilarious, fact free argument hey?

      You have absolutely NO understanding of 4-3-3 for you to continue to argue that the AM in the middle three is a “support striker”. Honestly, you could be a Sky pundit with such analysis. Utterly ridiculous.

      “even our wide players on the front line aren’t as far forward as fabregas.”

      Bollocks. The gazillion times Fabregas finds Walcott and the other clowns with magnificent through balls is he standing in front of them??

      Fabregas makes more successful medium/long range forward passes than any player in Europe. Please explain how he does this when he is in front of the players he is passing to!

      LOL!
      ——————————————————

      Nice try. Vieira and Petit were NOT AMs at any point in time. Both were battling, combative DMs/CMs. Nice try though.

      Comparing Petit/Vieira to Fabregas is as ridiculous as comparing Iniesta to Mascherano.

      You still have not broken it down for me. We have a 3 man midfield, please explain WHY our ONLY AM (one of the best in Europe), should also be a hulking, physical presence. Explain why a AM should do “Flamini” work. I have been asking you this for months, you still haven’t explained.

      Go ahead justify your blaming Van Gogh for not being a super bricklayer! Incredible!

      Compare trophies? Can one man win trophies on his own??? Your lack of logical backing to your argument is quite disheartening.

      Why is Lionel Messi failing to do squat with Argentina??
      Why is Cristiano Ronaldo doing absolutely squat with Portugal??

      Go ahead provide me answers!

      ———————————————————————–

      Where will Cesc fit in in the Invincibles?? Hilarious!

      Where will Maradona or Pele fit in? What about Roberto Baggio? Or Xavi? Or Iniesta? Or C. Ronaldo? What about Messi?

      You take away any of the players there and they are NOT the Invincibles anymore. And not because all the players there were great (only Vieira and Henry were), but because that is how THAT team evolved in THAT specific year.

      Completely illogical question!

        @Fred, listen slick, i’ve never blamed, accused, or talked bad about fabregas. i used to talk bad about players like almunia, senderos, denilson, and walcott but then i realized that any idiot can say something bad about someone and i simply grew up.

        my point has always been that, despite his talent, i don’t believe fabregas is the way forward. i believe his best position is in the center of midfield. he had his best season, numbers-wise there. even in his am role, he’s at his best when he drops deep to receive the ball and displays his middle to long range passing. it would only seem logical to play him there. so why doesn’t he? why not let players like arshavin and nasri, who made their names being #10s play their more natural position? it’s because wenger is insulating his young prodigy.

        the bpl is a tough league with hard men in the midfield. fabregas, despite his exceptional talent, is no hard man. please don’t disrespect the premier league by comparing it to some other league or international tournament. we all know it’s not the same. so does juan veron, andiry schevchenko, diego forlan, gerrard pique and numerous other world class players who have come to this league and played no part in winning silverware. the same would go for the likes of xavi, riquelme and even zidane. they are world class, no doubt, but simply aren’t built for this bpl shit. vieira and petit, ARSENAL’S AM’s IN A 4-4-2, were built for this.

        even though you can’t answer my questions, i’ll answer yours. the reason messi and ronaldo don’t do as well for their countries is the time required to establish continuity at the club level is not afforded to their national teams. messi is an exceptional circumstance because his team is the best of a generation.

        where would maradona and pele fit in the invincibles, center forward. baggio could do the bergkamp role. iniesta could play for pires. xavi doesn’t fit. cristiano could play for ljunberg and messi could play for bergkamp or ljunberg. now i’ll ask again, where does fabregas fit in the invincibles?

        • Fred 26 July, 2011 at 01:40

          @joshuad,

          Wait, hold on …. you just said that Fabregas plays as a support striker ahead of our wingers!!!

          I called utter bullocks on that and told you that actually Fabregas spends MOST of his time playing DEEP consistently making the highest number of successful passes in Europe …. and now you are trying to claim that he needs to “play deeper” and is not allowed to “so he can be protected”.

          WTF? He ALREADY plays deep …. why else would he have most passes in Europe ?(certified by the respected France Football magazine).

          Guess what man, you can NOT make medium/long range forward passes to people BEHIND you!

          Honestly, you argument really makes no sense at all.

          —————————————

          Please, in your very next comment, explain to me why the AM in a 3 man midfield should be a hulking hardman? What should the other TWO midfielders be doing then?
          PLEASE EXPLAIN that to me in your very next comment.

          In your world, an AM should be a visionary chance creator/passer AND also a hulking, fast, machine tackler???

          Just freaking incredible logic.

          —————————————————

          See how freaking retarded you argue?

          If Messi/Ronaldo or any other player joins that team, they are NOT the Invincibles? Even if you replace the weaker players in that team (Toure, Lauren, Gilberto, Lehmann) with “better” players you automatically get a completely different team throws away how their history. And they are NOT the Invincibles anymore.

          And how do you figure Xavi would not fit in??? F&cking hilarious. That just says it all really.

          Since we are asking stupid questions, where will Messi fit in Juventus’ 1996 Champions League winning squad??

          —————————————————————–

          I bet in your calculus, Gerrard, a big hulking English guy is just the type to win the EPL right?

          In your calculus, it is ALL about one man no? Nothing about the team?

          Why hasnt Gerrard won the League then in over a decade of starting for Liverpool?

          Explain that away.

        • joshuad 27 July, 2011 at 11:40

          @Fred, i have mentioned that we play more of a 4-5-1 than a 4-3-3. i also mentioned that cesc is at his best when he drops deeper, not that he plays there more often.

          my whole point with cesc is he is at his best in the center of midfield, not in the advanced role. the problem with cesc in the center of a bpl midfield is, defensively, he’s not very kinetic. that may not be a big deal in spain or italy, but the bpl is too fast, too physical, and thus very unforgiving for a cm who lacks that dynamic. even wenger moving an extra player into midfield (4-5-1/4-3-3) hasn’t help hide cesc lack of physicality defensively. this is why wenger has moved cesc to a more advanced role.

          the problem with cesc being in the more advanced role is he is far from a natural there. he has his moments but to be at his best, he will abandon his advanced post and drop deep into midfield. what’s more frustrating is arsenal has players in the team that are better at playing that attacking position than cesc. result, arsenal don’t get cesc at his best and many of the other attacking players aren’t at their best because they are forced to play out of position as arsenal accommodate cesc. so many players being limited makes it awful difficult to win a championship.

          me asking you to find a place for fabregas in the invincibles side wasn’t meant to take away from their legacy but to highlight fabregas’ limitations. i picked the invincibles because we know that team well. pick any premier league champion and find a place where fabregas would fit as a regular. i don’t recall any side ever winning the premier league with a cesc-type player as a central figure. despite his talent, this league simply doesn’t cater to him winning a championship.

        • Fred 27 July, 2011 at 13:15

          @joshuad,

          You are contradicting yourself, Joshy! Does Fabregas play deep OR is he the “farther than the wide players”. You cant have it both ways, man!! Sorry.

          Sorry, the facts might not square with YOUR spin, but he does play deep. He won’t be able to make his numerous passes from upfront. Use your brain.

          Your entire RETARDED argument is based on the “Wenger has moved Fabregas upfront when he should be deeper, but can’t play deeper because he is not a hulking physical specimen”

          ALL OF THAT IS WRONG!

          If he is actually playing too far upfront (as a supporting striker as your retardedly claim) then why do you mention his struggles in midfield? You are straddling both sides of the argument in a hilarious and confused manner. Choose one (ridiculous) argument and STICK TO IT.

          Like I said in the last comment:

          1) Please, in your very next comment, explain to me why the AM in a 3 man midfield should be a hulking hardman? What should the other TWO midfielders be doing then?

          2) Your continued talk of where a present player will fit in a past team shows how illogical you think. You replace ANY aspect of the Invincibles team and their history is forever changed. Why you would even try arguing a non-provable BS theory is beyond me.

          Fabregas will FIT in EVERY SINGLE EPL team. Man U, Chelsea and Man City will take him IMMEDIATELY if he wont only go to Barcelona.

          PS: Veron and Deco have actually won the EPL even though they didn’t have one-tenth of the impact Fabregas has had. Thereby proving my point. The team MATTERS!

          PSS: Explain to me why Gerrard (who according to your “logic” is good for the EPL) has never one an EPL in 12-13 years?? Does the “league simply not cater to him winning a championship” as you ridiculously claim?

          Go right ahead, spin it for me.

          A great player can NOT win squat in a shitty team. But spin it and give me your hilarious take on it!

      @joshuad,

      Your continued defense of Denilshit is hilarious and pathetic.

      His stats are complete, utter bollocks! Arsenal TANKED in that extremely dark Denilshit era.

      Every single two-bit AM was DESTROYING Denilshit for 90 minutes a game. Am talking AMs just pushing the ball to one side and strolling right past the plank.

      Your continued comparison of Denilshit to Beckenbauer or ANY other serious player is just an insult to their history.

      I should name a DM who has scored “three” (oh thats so many) goals AFTER I have named strikers who have won 25 tackles in a match. Hilarious!

      I get it. Diss a certified winner and one of Europe’s best (Fabregas) but suckle Denilshit, one of the WORST players to have ever SOILED the Arsenal shirt. Its opposite world with you.

      I just don’t get your humor I guess.

      • joshuad 25 July, 2011 at 23:24 Log in to Reply

        @Fred, tell me, why are denilson’s stats “utter bollocks”? is it because you can’t argue with them? before, you tried to blow smoke talking about his goals were from corners but then you realized we all watch arsenal games too. so your new reason is bollocks with no justification?

        denilson’s stats is where my comparison to beckenbauer came from. if he doesn’t put up those numbers, i don’t compare him to beckenbauer. the challenge i issued to you was to name three deep-lying players who produced .5 goals a game since beckenbauer retired.

        the only reason i defended denilson so strongly is because the treatment he received was unfair. he’s a 20 year old kid whom the boss asked to play out of position. if you put fabregas, nasri, or van persie back there, they’ll get skull-drug just like denilson did. it’s not his fault that arsenal lost diara, flamini, and gilberto the season prior, not to mention all the other problems. likewise, it’s not his fault that, despite his obvious physical limitations, he was a better dm than both diaby and alex song.

        denilson was never the answer and i never declared anything of the sort. i merely gave him credit for his effort. what did you bring to the table, arsenal fan? any assclown can criticize from the sidelines.

        • Fred 26 July, 2011 at 01:51

          @joshuad,

          Denilshit took corners there. Rewatch the full highlights of the first three games of that pathetic, dark season. A simple google search will educate you.

          Again, his stats are complete BULLOCKS that only you in the entire world are impressed with.

          Three goals!!! Yeah, earth shattering really!

          And where do you get the 0.5 goals statistic. That is the most twisted stat I have come across. Any player can have a 0.5 statistic if only the “right” games are chosen.

          In my local football league 7 years ago, I once scored a hattrick in 3 consecutive games. But failed to score for another year!

          Using your “logic”, I am a 3 goals a game player!!!

          So you are now accepting that Denilshit was skulldrug like a little b$%ch!! Wow, thats progress, Josh. Progress!

          And dont dare tarnish any of the other players by comparing them to him. They might all have their faults but at least they do NOT get outrun by the ref on a counterattack!

          And for the love of all that is good, stop mentioning him in the same paragraph as Beckenbauer. It is just embarrassing!

        • joshuad 27 July, 2011 at 11:46

          @Fred, 3 goals and 6 assists in the first 18 games of the season. that’s 9 goals that he’s contributed to in 18 games. if you divided 9 goals by 18 games that equals .5 goals a game. sorry to rattle you with that long division.

        • Fred 27 July, 2011 at 12:45

          @joshuad,

          Why pick the 18 games. Why not pick 10 games? Or 3 games? Hey?

          I scored 9 goals in 3 games. I AM the MOST prolific scorer in the game by your retarded “logic”?

          NOTHING in the world is impressive about “three” goals from the worst turd to soil the Arsenal shirt in the last 3 decades.

          I really hope to god that you do NOT do any sort of analysis at your day job.

    awesome! I’m an average manager…
    but I can guarantee you, I’ll make some changes, bring in a proper defender, DM, and a new wing and striker!
    I won’t play my viola while N. London burns.
    ;)

    I think it was the format. The other teams in the league weren’t playing proper football. I didn’t see it. The referees cost us the match. The fans just need to be more patient.
