Carling Cup Quater Finals: Arsenal v Manchester City

Okay stop me if you have read this before – it is a clash of differing mentalities -on one hand you have Manchester City who believe in buying success with their expensively built squad of internationals. On the other hand you have Arsenal who are keen to build and develop their team through frugalness (buying talent that may be unrecognized cheaply) and a hope in youth. Oh hell, you don’t have to stop me, I won’t go any further than that in reporting this fixture.

The press and blogs are rife with this story line. Frankly, I don’t care. As Arsene said, in terms of money we will never be able to compete with City (most likely none will) but the game still has to be played and anything can happen. Just ask Barcelona what happened in London in February.

For both teams neither will look like the squads that took the pitch this past weekend. City only played on Sunday and Arsenal Saturday. The good news is that Mancini says he will play a completely different starting XI than he did on Saturday. And while some of those could be termed fringe players, quite a few of the others are bona-fide internationals.

For Arsenal you can expect Alex Oxlade Chamberlain, Yossi Benayoun and Ji Young Park get a chance. I won’t be surprised to see Andrei Arshavin play as well as possibly Laurent Kosicelny (there has to be a reason he didn’t feature at all in Saturday’s squad right?).

The irony of this match up doesn’t escape me. Early last season we played Manchester City when their ascendancy was the talk of the town. The season has started off with pundits now saying Manchester City might match the feat of Arsenal Invincibles. Last season it was Samir Nasri who opened up the scoring for Arsenal on a PK. This season, having left for “greener” (re: MONEY) pastures it is quite likely the Frenchman could line up against his former club.  Same with Gael Clichy.

Should the both play I suspect different responses to them from the fans. Much in the same way we saw different reactions for Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor. Ade was heckled and chastised in the build up to and during the matches they played against each other. I should know I did some of it. Kolo Toure was lauded for his participation in Arsenal history. I certainly expect the same for Clichy and Nasri today. Look for Nasri to take the Adebayor role and Clichy to take over the Toure role in terms of fan “appreciation.”

The good thing about this match it is of two teams who like to play. Arsenal will likely come out with their 4-3-2-1 (4-3-3) and City could come out with their normal 4-2-3-1. City will not have Gareth Barry and Mario Balotelli available at all as they are both suspended. But that only means that Edin Dzeko could play. Dzeko got off to a blistering start but has recently been used infrequently by Mancini which has stunted his progression. Adam Johnson will play as will some fringe youngsters but the back four could be a good group with Kolo Toure anchoring the core. But no David Silva or YaYa Toure who to me are City’s best players.

Where City are going to have problems and I’ve seen it in almost every match they’ve stumbled, especially in the Champion’s League – when they play against teams that have speed and like to play rather than sit back and defend. They can be had. Their defence even the one we are likely to face today is slow. As they press forward teams are exploiting them on the counter attack. You only need look at Napoli to see the blue print on how you beat City. The key for Arsenal is besides Chamberlain who lines up on the wings. That is why the Premier League match in two weeks looks so much more exciting than this does because of Gervinho and Walcott and their ability to hurt teams with their speed. But I am getting ahead of myself.

It will be interesting to see how Mancini plays this. He has been complaining about this match and the fixture list since it was announced. He has adapted his style somewhat to be more attacking and doesn’t sit back more. But old habits die hard and I have seen some of their matches where he has played more set back waiting for the counter-opportunities.  That will be the interesting dynamic for Arsenal. How does Mancini play this. If he attacks we play on the counter. If he sits back – who is the creative fulcrum to unlock them? Personally, I’d like to see us go a 4-4-2 in this match with Arshavin in the middle and Chamakh and Park up front. It won’t happen but I’d like it to.

Frankly, I agree with some of the pundits on this and see this going into extra time. If Arsenal get by City they may have a good path back to Wembley. But this is hard test and if it goes to extra time anything can happen. It will depend on who makes a mistake. Still, based on the experience that will likely line up in the City squad, I would be lying if the slight edge doesn’t rest with the visitors today. (hey I am honest).

Lineups? Oh, hell I don’t know on this one. Let’s say:

Fabianski, Koscielny, Squillaci, Vermaelen, Yennaris, Frimpong, Benayoun, Arshavin, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Park, Gervinho

Yeah looks a little rough to me too. But we shall see.

Until tomorrow – Stay Goonerish!!

I think come January, if PSG/Bordeaux still want Chamakh, they can have him because by all accounts he was good in the french league before he came to us. Its a shame really, he played well first half of the season, and now he’s got literally nothing going for him anymore, he’s utterly devoid of confidence.

Also, should Andre also be sold, then Lukasz Podolski would be a nice buy. I am told he plays as a LW for the German team, so there’s our solution when Gervinho buggers off to the ACN in January, and the Ox can be backup on both wings?

Those 2 sales and 1 buy, should they happen, leave us with 2 quality strikers (RVP and Podolski) 2 young strikers (Vela and Campbell when they come back from loan) and 1 backup average/Carling Cup striker (Park). Still a bit confused why we bought him, was Wenger trying to piss of Lille, did he thing he was good or did he just want more money from Asia. Got no idea, and another thing Ive got no idea about, can anyone tell me why Wenger sends Vela out on loan all the time and doesnt give him a chance? cos the guys got talent

@George, who are you to question Arsene Wenger?
Don’t you know what he’s done for this club?
He forgot more about football than all of us combined know about the game.
So, if he doesn’t like Vela, it must mean Vela’s not good enough!
      ;)

      haaaaaaaaaa.

Ummm. what makes you think we will spend the money for a Podolski or someone else of that talent level?
That will be a LOT of money, and if other teams don’t accept our low bids, Wenger gets pissed off and just takes his ball and goes home.

We need 2 signings in January. And I hope they both cost over 20 Million. That would signal to the world that ARSENAL are willing to buy necessary talent to WIN, no matter what it costs.

      But it aint happenin’.

I guess I find it SAD that we find comfort and excitement about going out of another competition, because a few of our young players did well in one game?

    Has it come to that?
Ox played well. Frimpong and Coq did too…
We watched the kids STAR in the Carling Cup for YEARS, and said the same thing… that we are loaded with talent, and that its just a matter of time before many are STARS.

    How’d that work out?

I don’t really care much about the CC… but let’s not get over-excited about a LOSS. It means that our best chance at a trophy this year is gone!

I am just happy RVP was rested.

Great performance from the youngsters, Frimpong and Coquelin were excellent and not nearly enough can be said about the Ox, he was absoloutely brilliant. On the other end of the scale you have Chamakh, dear oh dear he had a bad game, I think it could be time for him to go, which is a shame as he hasn’t been here long. Surprised he took Park off and not Chamakh

But all in all, it took Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Adam Johnson and $amir Na$ri to beat a team of youngsters and when its a 1-0 that needs a 38 million signing to come on, you can bet Mancini won’t be very happy.

But still, very promising from the kiddies, Not too bothered about the result, means we can concentrate on the league eh. But I’ve got one thing to say to City: Champions League? You’re having a laugh.

@George, George, who cares how they won, and who played for them?
Actually, they rested many of their regular starters.

They won. They move on. They go on to the semi-finals.
We go out of the competition.
We chose to rest many of our starters too.
      OK.
well, City are UNBEATEN in the league, and definitely in the CL next year… as well as FA Cup Champions.

OK. Our kids played a decent game.
But I don’t really take much comfort in that.

I think City are going to be going for all 3 Domestic titles, so… CL? yeah, they’ll be in it every year going forward, and we have a LOT of work to do to get there again this year.

      Arsenal winning a trophy?
      That is a SAD LAUGH.

We’ll see what January brings… where I believe we’ll actually SELL more players than we bring in.
I could see Arshavin, Chamakh and Squillaci being sold… and us bringing one player.
      Making mo’ money.

        @stag133,
If that one player is Lukasz Podolski, you’ll get no complaints from me

        • stag133 30 November, 2011 at 14:15

@George, cost will be too much for Wenger and the board. So will the cost of M’Vila, Goetze, Hazard… you know, the REAL DEAL players…
Hell, Cahill cost too much for Wenger, so we go with the Squillaci’s of the world.

Awesome game. Other than the fact that we lost of course.

The ox – First time I’m seeing him play and he does look something special doesn’t he. Experience or no, our best player on the field (attacking-wise anyway). Suddenly happy we paid the 12mil asking price (no, calm down, that doesn’t mean I think we shouldn’t have spent on other areas of the field on more established players!!).

Fantastic body strength as well which is a killer combo to go with his speed. And he has god decision making on his final ball.

Frimpong – I know some here aren’t big fans but I like him. Showed good strength, good composure and stuck it to Nasri the c*nt. Good for him.

Coq – Dunno if I’ve seen too many players at his showing the positional awareness he has . Both in positioning on the field and positioning his body when in action to make the most of the situation he’s in. Happy with him.

But at the end of the day we get caught out on the counter. Ahh.. classic

OK. we’re out of that Competition.
We know Man City’s 2nd team is better than ours… they are supposed to win… but it seemed like we gave a decent account of ourselves.
Could be worse… we could be Chelsea or Blackburn, right?
Both those managers are going to get fired soon.

City have a GREAT Keeper in Joe Hart. He saved their ass against Liverpool, just excellent, but their back up was very good tonite from what I read as well.

less games to play… I mean that’s less money in the Arsenal coffers, but that’s not my problem.
    ;)

  6. stag133 29 November, 2011 at 13:30 Log in to Reply

Should be a good game to watch for neutrals and supporters alike… hopefully both come out to play some nice football, open play, lots of scoring…

No really caring if we win, or not to be honest… Carling Cup doesn’t do much for me… I see it as a vehicle for the kids to get some matches, and I hope most of the team is made up of young players, who deserve their chance.

City, well… yes, their 2nd team will be littered with some high priced talent, for sure… and they definitely have an advantage there…

City look like they are going out of the CL, so… maybe they’ll win all the Domestic trophies…?
    If I were them, that’s what I’d focus on…

City are UNBEATEN in the League, and Tottenham have 2 loss?
2 best teams in England? Sure looks it…
but you know United are bringing in someone in January… maybe Sneijder…

    enjoy the show.
