Match Preview: Arsenal v Manchester United; Premier League Match Day 22

This is painful. There used to be a time when Arsenal v Manchester United was the marquee matchup. Every season. All the time. When these two teams met in the past it was sure to be a legendary encounter with always something interesting likely to happen. Since our FA Cup win in 2005, that emphasis as steadily declined. As a matter of fact as much press as this fixture is getting I am not even sure it will be the best match up of the day, as the other Manchester and North London sides battle each other for more immediate title implications.

On Fox Soccer Channel here in the US the other night as a replay of the ’99 FA Cup Semi-Final second leg. United would win that match 2-1 in extra time off a Ryan Giggs scorcher. But the make up of those teams was a virtual who’s who of epic players. Especially for Arsenal. It was THE back 4, Seaman in goal, and the likes of Petit, Bergkamp, Ljunberg, Overmars, a young Anelka roaming the pitch for the Gunners. It was an epic clash. Every time.

When Arsenal and Manchester United line up this weekend alot of the focus will be on Arsenal looking to exact revenge for the 8-2 drubbing they received in August at Old Trafford.  To me, that should be the last thing they do. Frankly, we need to be more concerned about putting in a solid 90 minutes of football. Something we haven’t done in the last two games.

The defeats at Swansea and Fulham have shown us that many of the deficiencies we thought had been eradicated during our rise from 17th to 4th are still very much there. And as much as people want to blame a slew of injuries and bad refereeing, that doesn’t explain players switching off, missed chances, and all around sub-standard performances. ‘

Whatever squad takes the pitch on Sunday will need an all around, out and out 90 minutes of football in order to get a result. And that is what worries me. We just haven’t shown that in recent weeks. When some of these more senior players were brought in it was to give us that extra “oomph” when the chips were down. Well, when the chips were down the last two weeks, that “oomph” wasn’t there.  We’ve lacked heart and desire and let teams that we should be out-performing even with the injuries we have, dictate play to us.

If we approach this game with that same attitude then it could be another very long afternoon for Arsenal. Sure, United aren’t in the best form and this is probably the worst United team in recent memory. But Fergie has them ready. They will come to play and if we shut off they will do more to us than what Swansea did.

Arsenal need to shut down Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes. Rooney when given time and space will shred teams. If you give someone of his ability time he will hurt you. And even though Paul Scholes is 37 he will manage the midfield with all the efficiency he has in recent years. These two players are going to require the attention of both Alex Song and Aaron Ramsey. Song has shown that he is up to the task of taking on the oppositions’ better players. He will need to bring his ‘A’ game in order to slow Rooney down. The one side match up that will be interesting in the  Rooney battle will be Per Mertesacker. The BFG had his way with Rooney when Germany played England in South Africa. For Ramsey it is making sure he doesn’t let Scholes get that out-pass or letting the gingered-one get his forward momentum going.

Obviously the real test will be how our flanks are attacked by the likes of Evra and Nani. Nani in fairness hasn’t had the season a lot of people thought he’d have. When he was seen in the Community Shield a lot of people thought this was the year he came good. Frankly, like our own Theo Walcott. He’s largely been hit and miss with the odd flash of brilliance followed by frustrating performances. The real test however will be Patrice Evra. We all know he is a pain the ass (that’s putting it nicely) but he is a good pain in the ass for United and is good at getting forward.

In the loss to Swansea it was our makeshift fullbacks that bore a lot of the responsibility. I give a little room to Miquel because he was largely left alone to do his job without any protection help from Arshavin. Djourou – well he’s not a RB is he? The only hope for Djourou in this case is that Theo has one of those games and is using his speed effectively which would keep Evra honest. If Theo can find his feet this game then Evra is less of a threat. United’s defence are in shambles and even though I show Ferdinand in the lineup there are reports that he reinjured his back in training and could miss the match. Which means a good performance by Theo could put pressure on their own version of our wobbly defence.

I would also like to see Wenger give Henry 60 minutes. One of our big problems last week was Arshavin’s utter reluctance to provide any defencive cover to the LB. It left Miquel already struggling by playing out of position, woefully exposed. Henry at least understands the need to provide some help there and will do it. Plus I suspect that Rafael da Silva will start as a RB for United and frankly, there is enough guile in Henry to make the Brazillian look silly.

The big battle will be Robin Van Persie against the United Centre Backs. If Ferdinand is hurt well all’s the better. Frankly, I think the press reports are purely gamemanship by Fergie. This matchup may have lost its lustre and prestige but you feel that Wenger and Fergie would like nothing better than keep the facade of the old times up. But I digress, any way even though we lost to Swansea Van Persie doesn’t look like he is any rush to slow down. Whatever centre backs United line up are going to have their hands full. If they let him loose in the box it will be lights out for United. Especially given their own issues at keeper.

It’s a shame that this match no longer holds the sway of yesteryear. The matches were always an event. As the age of the managers has increased and the fortunes of the clubs have gone in opposite directions, Arsenal v United is no longer the match of the season. You really want to see Keane and Vieira go at each other. I long for moments like Keown’s shriek in Van Nistelrooy’s ear. Pizzagate, fighting it out for 1 and 2 always. These were legendary matches. Unfortunately, sadly really, they aren’t any more.

How the Match Should Play out:

How United approach the match I think is very dependent on the result of the other Manchester v North London match up. Should Tottenham win the match, look for United to throw all caution to the wind and go for it. But mainly I look for United to play NOT TO LOSE THE MATCH. I hope that makes sense. I don’t expect bus parking in the way City did last season when all £500 million was set on their side of the pitch. But I don’t look for it to be a high tempo game unless like I said United need an immediate result.  For Arsenal, they will be looking for a result and I suspect we are going to see the Gunners try and dictate tempo. Where United may want to slow it down and hit on the counter, Arsenal will look to press the home advantage.

The Final Word:

Just when you thought it had gone away, the Gooner civil war is back in full force. On one side you have the “Wenger out brigade” and on the other side you have the “Arsene Knows Best” faction. Frankly, as I have said repeatedly on this blog its all rather stupid. Not the points of views of these two arguments but the acrimony that either side goes at each other with.

In the end both sides want what’s best for the club but have differing opinions on how we get there. That’s why I wonder why the name calling, and out right slagging (rather harshly) is needed. We all want to defend our position but you’d think that one side of the argument were supporters of some other club. Frankly, reading it as I do, it makes look like a laughing stock to other supporters and frankly I blame the club.

I don’t want to go into a long diatribe on the club and their many faults (I have a piece in the works that does just that) but suffice it to say, their gross mismanagement of this club right now has created this environment. And when I say the club – I mean every component of it – board, management, and players. I don’t know what passes for reason at Highbury House right now but common sense and reason seem to have been thrown out the window and replaced by arrogance and impudence.  But I will get into that later.

One thing I do want to mention is that it looks like we will get to see Stan visit London a little more often. Hwne he last deigned to come down from Mount Olympus and speak to us mere mortals he pledged that we would see more of him for a long time to come. None of us could forsee that he meant that it would be as the owner of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams who have agreed to play one match a year in the Capital City for the next 3 years.  I guess he wasn’t lying but we wouldn’t know because as always – Stan is silent.

Oh and about Stan, there has been a lot of twitter chatter about the potential for changes to Arsenal beginning in March when the “lock out” clause Stan had agreed to expires. For those that don’t know about the lock-out clause, it basically forbid Stan from immediately seeking to sell the club and turning a profit. It also kept the present board in tact for one year. Lots of people are prediciting that Stan will begin to clear out the board and look to possibly sell the club. Alisher Usmanov has offered £14,000 per share which would net Stan a profit of £150,000,000 in one year of ownership and after paying only £11,000 per share. Frankly, I think they are all cracked. I’ve been banging the drum against Stan being the club’s owner since I started this blog. Why? He is status quo hands off to the tilt. He doesn’t get involved in the running of his clubs and leaves it the “people who know these things.” As long as Stan’s pockets are lined with cash he doesn’t care how he gets it.  Which is why I see very little change coming to Arsenal under Stan’s stewardship of the club as a matter of fact if Stan retains the club and doesn’t sell, I suspect we will continue our slide into mediocrity simply because Stan is as much a part of the problem at Arsenal as Peter Hill-Wood, Arsene Wenger, and others are.

Och well . . . until tomorrow. . . Stay Goonerish!!!

    8 days.
Not even a RUMOR out there about Arsenal bringing anyone in.
Do you think it will become easier as the deadline approaches, or more complicated?
The PRICE GOES UP, as the deadline gets closer.

    This is so f’n RIDICULOUS!

It is also why there is so little interest in the team right now… we have all seen this tired act
before… and perhaps we DO need to fail miserably
in order for there to be real change.

Without something drastic happening, there is no hope for any type of success… and there is no reason to really pay attention to the club.

@stag133, And QPR is evidently getting Taye Taiwo from Milan on loan for the rest of the year. So now QPR is a better destination? He was there for the taking, but no, no, Arsenal doesn’t need any cover in back. Did Arsene watch the game yesterday?

I have to admit, I have reached the point where I’m not that interested in watching these games. We all know the result before it happens. Hell, I’m pretty surprised that it was that close ofa scoreline. For the last three weeks this team has had the opportunity to make up ground on everyone, but they don’t have the stones to take advantage of it.

I hope big Stan and the board enjoy losing all that lucrative CL money next year. If they aren’t careful they may not even make the Europa league. And they better start looking for a striker because RvP is going to want to go somewhere he can win something and winning isn’t important at all to Arsenal anymore. Hell, Hill-Wood even said missing the CL wouldn’t be disasterous.

@seattle gooner, The idea that there are not any FB’s to be loaned to Arsenal is absolute bullshit… like MOST of what comes from the club.
It’s tiresome, and insulting to the fans.

and I don’t believe its the players “not having the stones”, we simply don’t have good enough players… you can’t sell Cesc and Nasri and Clichy, from an already less than adequate team, and fill in with Arteta, and a couple of average players, and think we’re better off on the pitch. It’s not the players fault, its management.
        Plain and simple.

        • seattle gooner 23 January, 2012 at 19:25

@stag133, I can’t say I entirely agree. They were beating Fulham. They were beating Swansea. They had opportunities to score first against Man U. Yes, I believe that management hasn’t bought good enough players, but they also haven’t bought many players that have much fight in them. Remember, they had the same problem last year and that’s when they had Nasri and Cesc.

        • stag133 24 January, 2012 at 03:06

@seattle gooner, we have laughable defenders. no lead is ever safe. do you remember losing a 400 lead to Newcastle last year? not ugh has changed.

        • stag133 24 January, 2012 at 03:07

          @stag133, * 4-0 lead

        • seattle gooner 24 January, 2012 at 16:25

@stag133, That was sort of my point. Arsenal has not bought the right kinds of players and those players, including Cesc and Nasri coughed up a 4-0 lead last year. Although I do wonder how much of it is coaching. All of these defenders seemed pretty good at other clubs.

  2. stag133 23 January, 2012 at 05:46 Log in to Reply

    Not much to say.
It’s painful to watch, so why re-hash it…
we won’t address the problems like we should…
    they’ve been ignored for years.

We brought back Thierry Henry… that’s a gift to the fans.
Buy his new shirt… enjoy a few goals by the legend for 6 weeks…
fill the stadium… buy some merchandise… grab a few hot dogs and a soda.

fill. the. coffers. with. your. hard. earned. ca$h.
    We are AR$ENAL LLC.

Please Arsene… if its YOU that is too stubborn to purchase players… just GO! Get the feck out now.

And if its the Board holding you back from buying the necessary players, not giving you funds… then WALK AWAY NOW… just say its so, let the fans know its not you, and GO…

Wenger’s ability to make proper substations is there for all to see… regularly…
but the fact that we don’t have proper players to actually bring on…. don’t have a proper Full Back in the entire team… is just PATHETIC.

@stag133, * INABILITY to make proper SUBSTITUTIONS

  3. Kiwi 23 January, 2012 at 05:03 Log in to Reply

Yipididip – are we having fun? 18 points behind the leaders and Wenger maintains his misplaced veneer of arrogance. He’s made 50,000 substitutions you know. That about sums up where Wenger’s at – he’s unteachable because in his own mind he knows it all.

That’s why no one is posting because we all know he’ll do whatever he wants to do and most likely that will be an iteration of the last 6 or 7 years of pit-digging dross. Why refer to our need for player X or Y, they won’t be bought, let alone will Wenger have an epiphany and change his M.O.

It’s like the rulers and kings in the bible, even after the prophet visits or the dream teller explains their plight they can’t alter direction. It’s locked in.

No, it’s a form of Chinese torture for fans, a long slow death. The difficulty for many fans is that they’re deeply involved with Wenger – in some cases he’s all they know about Arsenal. So….they can’t divorce themselves and see the situation coolly and dispassionately. Wenger is Arsenal to them – the 7am site is an example of this. I’m numbed by the lack of full discussion on that site. Every day Tim preaches the same gospel and the masses lap it up in a very sad dependent controlled manner. They even ‘thumbs down’ and hide those who dare disagree. It must be one of the must pathetic blogs I’ve ever seen. Tim’s opinion rules – the closest thing to a cult I’ve seen.

On the game itself. Once again we saw how utterly bereft of footballing talent Theo Walcott is. And yet – he’s a cert starter. Would he start at ManU? No chance. He’d be a sub at best and made to sharpen his game. At Arsenal he starts and demands a top salary. That’s our values.

Ox looked interesting. More interesting than Walcott has ever looked. Did anyone notice the interplay between Ox and Walcott. It was as though Walcott was treating him like the ‘junior’. We’ve rid the team of a lot of these bloated failures (Nasri, Denilson, Diaby (nearly), Eboue, Bendtner) he needs to go as well. He believes the nonsense Wenger has talked about him and his mates for 6 years – it’s backfired. Instead of seeing his poor quality performances he thinks he’s a star.

Van Persie’s goal was a beaut, but his all-round play in the first half was pretty lame.

This ManU side is not flash. But Ferguson IS a student of football and he remakes himself and his side constantly. When the talent available to him is more limited he accepts the reality and puts out worker bees. But he always gets his team to do enough – that’s what being a top manager at a top club is about. He doesn’t have Ronaldo, Rooney and Tevez to blitz teams off the park so he re-engineers his side to still be winners despite their limitations.

I think deep down everyone (including the most ardently optimistic) know how the story of this season will end. And they always have.

Most Arsenal fans I know have completely tuned off emotionally. And so have I.

    Sad.

@Fred, Fred, also very well said. And factual. The supporters in the UK that I know… the one’s with Season tickets for many years, are ANGRY and disillusioned…

Usually there’s a dearth of comments on here after Arsenal wins… and an abundance of them after losses, particularly against big teams. but there are only 8 on here including this one, and 5 of them were from before the match.

Perhaps it’s the numbing effect of people realizing for the bazillionth time that “I’ve seen this movie before.”

    • stag133 23 January, 2012 at 05:40 Log in to Reply

      @ChicagoGooner, CG.
what is there possibly to say at this point?
It is really unfortunate, but the “Doomers” are being proven right… we’ve been right all
along… and we are watching before our eyes, it coming to fruition…

like it was stated above, it is, and has been… like Chinese water torture.

and for me… watching these next 9 or 10 days will be HELL…, where we will not likely buy or sell players…
discard the one’s dragging us down into mid-table… or go out and address the many needs the club have by bringing in the talent we desperately need to compete.

Why the hell would RVP stay at this club… there is little wonder he hasn’t signed…
and when he goes… when we ca$h him in because he refuses to sign a new contract, and sign on for more
of this shit… we’ll be devoid of any chance at a trophy or Top 4 finish….

SOMETHING HAS TO CHANGE … and it has to happen quickly.
This is too much for even the most ardent fan to take.

God I’m tired of this shit… it was deja vu all over again and again and again and again. Arsenal really know how to stomp on a fan’s heart. I have a strong dislike for this manager and I HATE this board. Enough is enough. It was enough three years ago.

Three straight league losses and four injured FB’s. Should we spend some money? No.

That about sums up the board.

Ox is our best player but let’s take him off and put on our worst. That makes no sense but it was the plan I drew up before the game, and heaven forbid I think on my feet and change anything on the fly. Besides, Theo is above Ox in the pecking order. Gotta reward his loyalty for putting up with may shit for 6 years.

That about sums up the manager.

Let’s not show any ambition when we have possession. Let’s just pass it around and not do anything. Then play barely passable defense, except for the important parts of the match, ie right before haftime. Then let’s give a 38 year old LOADS of time and space.

That about sums up the players.

FOUR YEARS of complete and utter failure and ruin… on the pitch. But let’s not change anything and keep plodding along in the same way. The manager’s job is safe, the players’ jobs are safe, the board and owner are making MONEY.

      @ChicagoGooner, I sense sarcasm here….but
      Gotta agree….

Backs to the wall now, need to show some ambition in the transfer window.
Wenger and the Board/owner will otherwise be chased with Pitchforks
      And burned at the stake….

Not sure about a fullback….There is such a thing as
      Bad Luck…..

We need to replace Cesc and Nasri with a young player of
Real quality, which shouldn’t KILL Wilshere (Ramsey, maybe….)
Arshavin, of course, needs to be loaned to the same team that took
Denilson……Recall Carlitos Vela, as the Wal-Mart solution, if
Kronke can’t pry open his wallet…..

Super Sunday not so super….The other teams are not all that, we’re just
      Far, far worse….

Chelsea held by Norwich, Liverpool currently trailing 2-0 at Bolton. Once again, Arsenal are set up perfectly, as the teams right above and below them in the table have dropped points. Will we take advantage, and by doing so, cause another team above us to drop points? You can bet City and even some Spurs fans will be cheering for us to at least draw.

    I don’t see it though.
No Arteta and we have our shortages at the back still. Maybe Henry can provide the goalscoring help that RVP has had to do without all year long. Frankly, I think he’ll have to because I don’t see us winning without scoring a lot.

I doubt TV5 will play, as he is a major doubt or something. But it winds me up to see Wenger say “I’ll review LB options after the MU game” frankly, if (somehow) we beat United he won’t bother and if we lose he might not. A (supposed) top 4 club should not be 21 days in the transfer window with no FBs, its simply ridiculous.
