Is he? Or. Isn’t he?

That seems to be the question on everyone’s mind right now as the speculation about Lukas Podolski and Arsenal reaches fever pitch.

Last week we reported that there were various reports in Germany and England that said rsenal and representatives of the Cologne and German National team forward had agreed to personal terms ahead of a move to the Gunners this summer. At that time there weren’t any reports that the clubs had agreed to any kind of deal.

On Wednesday Bild blew the lid off that. The German publication ran a story late in the day that said with a degree of certainty that Arsenal and Cologne had agree to a fee of 13 million Euros (£10.9 million pounds) to prise the forward free from the reluctant German side. If true this would be one of the earliest moves Arsenal have made in preparing for the summer transfer market. It would also signify a significant improvement in terms of scoring options up front.

What we do know for sure is this. Arsenal made original enquiries in the summer only to be rebuffed by the German club. The Gunners came back in January as speculation rose that Podolski was interested in leaving Cologne. He had expressed disappointment that the club were not challenging for honors and were a few points off the relegation zone.

When Arsenal came calling in January however they were not only rejected by the club but the player and his reps basically said he feared a move in January would work against his chances and form ahead of Euro 2012. It was reported that Cologne were looking for around £16 million and Arsenal bid around £8.

If the agreed upon fee is true (again assuming the whole story is true) then it would suggest that Cologne realize they cannot keep hold of the player beyond his contract expiry in 2013. So they’ve decided to get something for him now.

Podolski clearly wants to come to England. Recent comments from recuperating Per Mertesacker, seem to imply that Arsenal are his preferred choice. Mertesacker was recently interviewed in his native Germany and said he had received a slew of texts from his German international teammate about Arsenal, the club, the team etc. What Mertesacker said back hasn’t been reported but it is safe to assume that Per is a big Arsenal cheerleader.

The inability of Cologne to sign the player to a contract extension and Arsenal as a preferred destination seem to make the speculation a little more firmer than say rumours that have Eden Hazard coming to the Gunners. And if this turns out to be the case and Arsenal have gotten their man, then it is also a message to Robin Van Persie that they are serious when they say they are going to beef up the squad. Podolski would be serious beefing up.

Poldi can play anywhere up front. But he is often deployed out left for the German national team and as good as Gervinho can be, Podolski would be that much better. But if he were deployed up front he might allow Van Persie to slip into his natural 10 role and offer Arsenal a two headed attacking partnership they haven’t had in quite some time.

So what do you need to know about Lukas Josef Podolski? He started in playing at the age of six for the youth system at FC Bergheim where he stayed until 1995 when he joined Cologne. He made is senior squad debut in 2003 showcasing his talent in a season where his club were relegated to the second tier of German Football. That season he made history by scoring the most goals in Bundesliga history by a 18 year old (10 in 19 appearances).

In 2004 he was selected for the German National team even though he was playing in a lower division.  With that he drew interest from some bigger clubs but opted to stay at Cologne  in the fight for promotion to the 1st division of Germany football scoring 24 goals and becoming the leagues leading scorer. Cologne would eventually get promoted to the Bundesliga on the back of Podolski’s performances. .Though the following season they went back down again  That would ultimately lead to his departure in the summer of 2006.

That year with a season left on his contract he signed for Bayern Munich  His time at Bayern was stop and start and he failed to make the impact there that he had at Cologne. In 2009 when Munich brought in Luca Toni, the writing was on the wall. Falling down in the pecking order, he would go back to his beloved Cologne (with assurances from Joachim Low that the move wouldn’t jeopardize his place in the national team) on a new four year deal.

Podolski is a very versatile player with the ability to play across the front line. He is an excellent ball handler with speed and a rocket shot that makes him one of the most feared forwards in Europe. He’s a very durable player having only had two long-term injuries in his career (I hope I haven’t jinxed him). He isn’t the best header of the ball and while has has okay creativity its not a hallmark of his game.

If you have seen him play for Cologne you will know he is a ‘company man.’ Very loyal to his club and is fan favorite. He delights in playing the game. I liken his personality to Robin Van Persie. Their approach and demeanor are cut from the same cloth.

Poldi is having another one of his epic seasons scoring at will. In 20 Bundesliga games this year he has 16 goals. He is a consistent double-digit scorer for his club and would be a big boost to the Arsenal attack.

He wants to join Arsenal because he feels that he can progress his game under Arsene Wenger. More than any other manager there is hopes the frenchman can get from Poldi what has been gotten from Van Persie. If Wenger could do for Podolski what he has done for Van Persie Arsenal surely would have a two headed attack that they currently lack and was evidenced in the second half against Milan. Whether starting along side Robin van Persie or giving the prolific Dutchman a breather, Podolski wouild be a marked improvement over both Marouane Chamakh and Chu-Young Park.

Of course the cynics out there are going to say it’s a ploy to get people to sign up for season tickets. Or they will believe it when he’s holding up a shirt and spending a month on the training table. Of course, we won’t really know if this is a true story until the deal is announced.  But as a I mentioned earlier, this does have a ring of truth to it. The Gunners are in a run of good form, everyone is feeling good, especially a certain dutch striker. There is momentum and a feeling that the Champion’s League qualification is under their own control.  Why not send a signal of intent early to players and fans alike that the club is serious about improving the squad this summer?

It would also be a mark of good business. The fee whether it is the £10.9 million agreed upon or the £6 million that would be triggered if Cologne are relegated would mark a real deal for a player of Podolski’s talent.  It would also do what I think a lot of us hope for – getting good talent shrewdly. One of the things I admire about clubs like Napoli & Dortmund is that they are showing extended success on a shoestring budget and they are doing it not by buying superstars but by buying talented stars that aren’t necessarily big names but have become big names under their program.

I am hopeful that this transfer is true. I am hopeful for all the different things it would signal.

    The signing of Podolski wouldn’t surprise me. It’s a bob each way signing. If RvP goes – Podolski can give the appearance of a replacement. If RvP stays – Podolski can play wide and provide cover. Perfect scenario for Wenger.

    Will his signing substantially improve our chances of competing? That’s the question.

    My sense is Wenger’s approach each off-season is ‘never enough’. He’s banking on a series of things correlating that never happen. That injuries are few and inconsequential, that young players come good, that star players carry the team through the trials. It never happens ‘enough’ for us to compete to the end.

    He needs to be more ruthless and he won’t.

    The bright light this season is RvP’s form and first-ever injury-free season (fingers crossed) and the Ox. Hardly cause for mass celebration.

    It looks more likely that we’ll end this season in 3rd or 4th place and this will be hailed a triumph. And if the goal is champions league football and the long-term repayment of our debt then yes it is an achievement. The difficulty for me is that I don’t follow Arsenal to admire their financial acumen. I follow them out of interest and the hope they’ll succeed on the field. If they don’t seem to share that same aspiration then it becomes a little meh. And it is a little meh.

    If we come 3rd or 4th it will draw the sting of criticism and Wenger will cling on to the managers role and we’ll play exactly the same boring tune again next season.

    Manchester United will likely ein this seasons title again – with a very average Manchester United team. Arsenal plus three players could trump them but we won’t because Wenger’s off-season approach is ‘never enough’.

    Story out in the Sunday Times that RVP has already agreed a contract … wages of 210K per week, with Man City…
    Just like we are somehow signing Podolski…

    How quickly would the hate rain down on RVP if this were true… though the club should be getting the blame…. they’d still have to sell him to City… and we know City aren’t afraid to overpay for the player(s) they want…

    interesting times.

    Podolski shoudn’t be considered as a replacement for anybody. He has a great skill set but Theo and Gervinho bring things to the table Podolski can’t provide speed and one on one play.

    As a Gooner my biggest worry is that all his career he has played on an counter attaking side that missed talent and he isn’t the most gifted passer out there.

    The other thing is the language barrier and his ability to adapt to a new enviroment. He failed missarable at Bayern because he coudn’t handle expectations and was just plain lazy at the end.

    Still a Huge upgrade over Park and Chamak.

    • OziKenyan 9 March, 2012 at 11:38 Log in to Reply

      @Ty,

      Don’t agree on Theo’s one on one prowess. He does bring great speed to run behind high lines though.

      And I wouldn’t be too concerned about anyone coming from Bundesliga. Most Germans have quite a good grasp of English and their pace of play is about as similar to the PL as it gets. Not that he won’t need time to adapt, but hopefully not as long as… say Park for example.

      • Ty 9 March, 2012 at 19:54 Log in to Reply

        @OziKenyan,
        Lets say he isn’t the brightest Fella in the room.
        But he has Mertesacker to ease the transision.

        And you are right Theos 1on1 play is average.

  9. Caribkid 9 March, 2012 at 01:36 Log in to Reply

    Don’t think this an RVP replacement, but is also insurance if RVP does decide to leave , which I don’t think he will. Think RVP is loyal enough that he will sign a contract extension like Cesc with that implied “get me the hell outa here” clause if Arsenal does not show ambition.

    Reason for leaking this signing is an attempt by the club to buy some goodwill from the fans at ticket renewal time and show intent to RVP. Can’t see anyone else of significance coming in though because Diaby and Wilshire will be LANS.

    In answer to a comment above, Poldi plays on the left wing for Germany so Gervinho’s day are numbered unless he steps up his game, plus, Gervinho will be back at the ANC next season. I like a few things about this purchase:

    1. He is mature and is at his peak.

    2. Hell of a shot and can take free kicks.

    3. fairly clinical finisher unlike Theo,Gervinho and the rest of the front line (RVP excepted of course).

    4. Strong on the ball and should easily adapt to the BPL since he is coming from the Bundeslegia.

    5. Good team player and showed loyalty to Koln by returning there when he had many other lucrative offers.

    All in all a good, solid if not exciting purchase. The type of which, we should have been adding the past 5 years.

    Rafael Honigstein, noted German ESPN correspondent who is Mr. Bundeslegia also confirmed his arrival on Talksport and so I feel this is a done deal unless something weird happens. BTW, deals can be completed at any time, just the transfers can’t be completed until the window is open. This is what we also should have been doing for the past few years rather than being chintzy and repeating the fiasco of last summer.

    • OziKenyan 9 March, 2012 at 02:22 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid,

      It seems I’m about the only Arsenal fan I know who likes Gervinho. lol. I just think he offers us something that almost none of our players do. I don’t think there’s anyone at Arsenal who can beat a man like Gervinho can. Once he clears his head and builds some confidence and gets his final ball right (and he’s shown enough that the capability is there) I think he will be indispensable against 10 man behind the ball teams.

      For this reason, I hope if Podolski is a replacement for anyone than it’s Theo. I think there’s no clear Arshavin replacement coming with Ox having broke through the way he has (and good for him too – star in the making).

      • stag133 9 March, 2012 at 02:58 Log in to Reply

        @OziKenyan, I like Gervinho… he’s a player I definitely want in the team… why can’t he play on the right side as well? Wenger has players out of their normal position all the time.

        On Theo. As I said previously. CHECK THE STATS. He’s the 2nd leading scorer AND 2nd leading Assist getter on the team, obviously behind RVP in both. Based on that, perhaps he should get LESS stick, and perhaps a bunch of other players should also be stepping up their game. I don’t think Theo is close to what he could be, but the stats don’t lie.

        • OziKenyan 9 March, 2012 at 11:53

          @stag133,

          Meh. I would expect nothing less. He’s starting in a very attack minded team. He’s played more minutes in that position that Oxlade/Gervinho (our only other 2 in that postn discounting our departed Russian). The stats show that goals + assists, he averages less per minute that both Gervinho and Oxlade. And his link up play is the worst of the three. I like him as a squad player, a wild-card, but I think if we are to get back into trophy winning ways he either needs to step up big time or be replaced (hopefully he steps up, but I have little hope)

          @OziKenyan,

          BTW Ozi, I do like Gervinho. However, like Theo and many of our other players, he is an unfinished article. Poldi on the other hand is a known quantity and at his peak. If given service he will score goals as he has a very high conversion ratio, strong on the ball, excellent predatory instincts and has a wicked left foot. Almost like a left footed Pires with more pace.

          @Caribkid,

          Can’t be bothered typing everything up again.

          But question: Does he track back and do his defensive work? Otherwise he becomes a liability, more-so considering our LB position is weak defensively as it is

        • Caribkid 10 March, 2012 at 04:54

          @OziKenyan,

          Yes Ozi, he does his work at both ends. Have seen him play many times for Germany and is way better defensively than either Theo or Gervinho. Theo and Gervinho may put up the miles but they are still pathetic at defending.

          Also, if you rotate defensively from your center MF’s you will need less defensive work from your “wingers”.

        • stag133 10 March, 2012 at 22:25

          @Caribkid, Podolski will be lucky to get near the heights that Robert Pires reached at Arsenal.

      • Caribkid 9 March, 2012 at 17:21 Log in to Reply

        @OziKenyan, Theo will never make it as an outright winger because he is “footballistically unintelligent :)

        If played centrally he will score goals with balls over the top and would definitely alter opponent game plans as they could not play a high line against. With Theo’s world class acceleration,he is a CB’s worst nightmare. In all my years of watching football I have never seen a player with such acceleration over the first 20 meters. He tries hard but can’t defend worth crap, can’t play with his back to goal, tends to be indecisive and can’t impose himself on the game like many other world class players.

        • OziKenyan 9 March, 2012 at 20:12

          @Caribkid,

          It’s a bit of a conundrum. Arsenal, to get the best out of Theo, would have to change their whole style of play. And if they did, then no doubt almost any opposition around would have to alter their play as well. If Theo had a partner in a 2 man striker force, and he played off the last man’s shoulder I can see him causing a lot of problems. But the team would lose the extra man in midfield. For Arsenal, with RVP down the middle, I think the benefit of having that extra midfield man outweighs the possible devastation Theo could cause played up front.

          Which leads us to the question: does Theo really fit in at Arsenal? I think yes, but probably not as a guaranteed starter every week. More of a player to cause an impact/mix things up/play to the oppositions weakness.

          p.s.- Part of me would love to see Theo go to a semi-decent club and play upfront in a 4-4-2. I don’t think his ego would allow him to ‘step-down’ clubs, but you’re right about his acceleration, and for all his faults, when he burns an opponent and leaves him for dead, it is truly a joy to watch

        • Caribkid 10 March, 2012 at 04:49

          @OziKenyan,

          There is no need to play 4-3-3 all the time, especially when it does not fit our squad. We could easily use Theo in a 4-4-2 against the Park-The-Bus teams and force them to play in their own half. If you add Song, Arteta, Rosicky/Ramsey and Ox/Gervinho as the MF four you have some great dynamics with a combination of skill, power and steel.

          Just my thoughts.

    • stag133 9 March, 2012 at 03:01 Log in to Reply

      @Caribkid, We are going to have to PAY RVP big time, thus changing the wage structure, AND we still have to finish Top 4. If we finish outside the Top 4, then Podolski will be a REPLACEMENT for Van Persie, because he’s not going to sign, and we aren’t going to let him walk. So, in that sense, I think this signing SCREAMS insurance policy.

      I like the signing… I like that we have more options going forward, as Chamakh has to go…
      but our problem is… DEFENSE. DEFENSE. DEFENSE.
      The lack of talent and consistency at the back has cost us every season in recent memory.
      If we didn’t let in 4 goals in the first game against Milan… who knows what might have been.

      • Caribkid 9 March, 2012 at 17:27 Log in to Reply

        @stag133,

        No matter who we put in there Stagg our defense will always allow goals because of the lack of ORGANIZATION. Organization is all about coaching and drilling on the practise field and we obviously don’t spend enough time on that aspect of the game.

        I would dearly love to see Arsene still supervise overall training aspects but leave it to a defensive coach (Martin Keown/Steve Bould) and offensive coach (Bergkamp) to cover those aspects individually.

        • OziKenyan 9 March, 2012 at 20:20

          @Caribkid,
          Agree.

          Sagna – best right back in the league

          Verm/Kos – Have shown enough that we know thet have all the necessary attributes to be top CBs

          LB – Our weak point

          Still, 3/4 individuals isn’t bad. I think the team mentality to defending is much more at fault here.

        • Caribkid 10 March, 2012 at 04:43

          @OziKenyan,

          I would go on to say Ozi that both Santos and Gibbs are good players with most of the attributes required and would perform well if organized. Most of Gibbs errors are of the tactical type rather than out and out Calamity Clichey errors.Santos is great going forward and is a good header of the ball. Both of them also have speed to burn.

          Look on Barca (sad to say, but when Alvez goes up in attack (he plays like a winger) Busquettes will drop back into a CB position and the other Cb will slide over to protect that area. Very simple defensive rotation.

          Also, Per is an excellent readerof the game and a good passer. We have more than a good core but they need to be organized.

          @OziKenyan, Ummm. Koscielny is an average defender at best, with a penchant for making the big mistake at an inopportune time…. and though I like Vermaelen, he has been POOR this season.
          The are NOT a pairing that could play for any BIG TIME team.
          Only at Arsenal, where defense is a secondary consideration.

          @stag133, I don’t think Vermaelen and Kocielny work well together. Both work better when paired with Mertesacker who seems to fill the organizational hole that the coaches refuse to work on. All of the defenders on this team have shown the ability to play, but as I’ve said before, the coaching on this team seems to almost deconstruct the basics of defending.

    Maybe more good news?

    According the agent of Tomas Rosicky, Arsenal and he have agreed to terms of a new contract.

    All of it should be finalized by next week.

    It would be a very nice signing.
    But it also has the earmarks for him to be RVP’s replacement.
    (yes, I read the above comments)
    He’d be cheaper to pay, and if Arsenal sell RVP for $40 Million, it would be another shrewd piece of business for the team.
    He’s an insurance policy, in case RVP doesn’t sign.
    If he doesn’t sign, we’ll ca$h him in.

    But this is POSITIVE.
    How we are signing people in March, not sure, but why isn’t everybody doing so? who needs the window to be open or closed?

      @stag133,

      If Arsenal were to sell Van Persie unfortunately they are not going to get £40 million for him. Even in his current form he is 29. There is no guarantee he can keep this pace up. And while he is relatively healthy, there is concern that he still has glass ankles. The transfer fees I’ve read hover around the £20-£25 million mark.

      Because they could not secure a signature earlier they stand to actually lose out on this deal if they were to sell him this summer simply because they cannot get what he’s worth.

      Also RvP knows he may not the deal he is looking for from other clubs. He’ll get salary of course but he may not get duration.

      I am not going to call this one. I made the mistake with Cesc. I have my hunches but I will keep it to myself.

      Stag – teams do business when the window is closed. How do you think many clubs can announce signings on the first few days of the window. They don’t just happen. Those early deals (within the first week or two)have likely been worked on ahead of the window. Clubs want the money in and the buying club wants the player in.

      Arsenal may be doing it again – look for the name Lewis Holtby. 21 year old midfielder from Schalke. Word is that the deal is done.

    Oh and found an exact copy of Szczesny on the Aussie cricket team: (Xabel DOherty)

    As long as he’s not a replacement for RVP. Also 100k seems a bit high. I hope it means that we may be restructuring our wage system to pay our not so great players less (the likes of Denilson), and increase our big players wages (give RVP 200k plsss… I’ll chip in if need be).

    Also I think the article bigs up Podolski a bit. He’s never had any truly ‘epic’ season in Germany. This season has been his first in German top division where you’d describe him as prolific. Still rate him though, and if the news is true, then happy to have him.

    As long as he’s NOT an RVP replacement. And if he’s not, then it begs the question, where will he play? I don’t think we’ve brought in someone for the figures suggested to be a bencher. Guess we’re less likely to see Hazard at any rate…

      @OziKenyan,
      Lets say its epic for Cologne then. He’s consistently been a double digit goal scorer except at Bayern and in on injury year.

      @OziKenyan,

      And I don’t think its a replacement for RvP. I really do think this is a statement to RvP that they are going to go out and get talented players that can help Arsenal challenge again.
