YAMA Cast Season 2 Episode 1: The one about transfers

Tansfers. It’s all anyone wants to know about these days. Forget for a moment that the season kicks off one week from today – it’s all about who’s coming in. That’s why we’re happy to kick off season 2 with a one on one discussion with one of the folks most Gooners online turn to for their transfer stories – @GeoffArsenal.

I don’t know Geoff’s last name – never asked but he is usually one of the first people to have information on Arsenal transformations and I would classify his success rate as near on 95%. When you ask anyone on social media who you should trust on rumours – it’s always Geoff’s name that comes up first.

Geoff and I spend 30+ minutes going through the whole Luis Suarez saga and what the likely outcome could be. We also discuss the rumour dujour which is the one rumour that has been perculating out there but is now gaining more traction – Bayern Munich’s Gustavo to Arsenal for a fee of around £14 million. Gustavo finds himself the odd man out in Pep Guardiola’s German plans and has been left out of their most recent match.

Originally reported to going to Wolfsburg that story seems to have been muted. Geoff talks briefly and whether or not Arsenal are truly in for the player. We also take a look at the need for defensive cover and whether or not Arsenal will be bringing in a RB or CB to fill in for the missing players.

Finally, the YouAreMyArsenal Podcast is going to be changing its format starting with the next episode, we’re pleased to have some of regular writers and myself taking a half hour each week to discuss all the Arsenal news and previous and upcoming matches. We’ll then conduct our normal 1 on 1 interview with who’s hot in traditional media, social media and all points beyond.

We thank you for coming back and listening and hope you’ll come back each week for a new episode.

Until next time. . . Stay Goonerish!!!

stag, i am a fan of arsenal signing suarez. i believe he would be an incredible addition; that special talent that wenger always goes on about. the situation at liverpool is ugly as someone over there is lying. they’re hoping that with time, suarez will change his mind and fall in love with the club; that some sense of devotion and emotional attachment will soften his heart. that’s not going to happen. he’s thinking about his career and playing in the champions league.

where does this idea that he won’t get paid come from? he’s got a contract that says he will. it’s liverpool that have chosen to freeze him out. as far as losing value, that will hurt liverpool when they try to sell the player, ie. not his problem. even if he doesn’t play all season, i’m willing to bet money that uruguay will be taking him to the world cup. as for your straight shooter, he declared that fernando torres wasn’t for sale right before he sold him to chelsea; a direct top four rival. they’re just trying to get a few more quid out of arsenal. it’s all lip service, brother. it’s part of the game.

i agree that ‘pool don’t want to sell to arsenal for obvious reasons but are they going to allow that player who has potential to become a cancer to remain in their dressing room? when you say no player is bigger than the team, that’s what it implies. team first. if his heart isn’t in it, you run a risk keeping around a player who’s poor attitude is likely to bring down team morale. and no, liverpool are not our peers.

understand, i’m not opposed to arsenal signing gustavo. i just think it would be better to bring in a highly rated back-up and not someone to replace arteta. geoffrey kondogbia is about as highly rated as they get and is only 20 years old. he’ll respect the fact that he may not be the guy right away. a 26 year old gustavo, going for 17 million, will expect to come in and be the man. if that happens, arsenal lose their true leader. how it affects the team is up to wenger to manage.

as for gorcuff, i think he’s talented but way too lazy for the bpl. i know wenger likes him but i prefer cazorla.

usg, you cant listen to what wenger says to the media. 90% of the time, he’s got an agenda and it’s meant to mislead the media one way or another.

you’re delusional if you think Liverpool aren’t our peers… sorry, but we’ve won f*ck all for 8 seasons… absolutely NOTHING.
Wenger can jam this 4th place is a trophy bullshit, but the ONLY one’s buying that crap, are deluded Arsenal fans.
They won the League Cup in 2012… yes, I know I don’t consider that a real Cup, but how many Arsenal fans thought it was a BIG DEAL prior to us losing it to Birmingham?
They won the FA CUP in 2006…
They won the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE in 2005. (You know, the Cup we’ve never won)

So, please… tell me how you figure we are so superior to Liverpool, when they’ve won trophies in the past 8 years… and we’ve won ZERO.

Lastly, perhaps you should read up on the latest, where it looks like he’s staying at Liverpool, and might even sign an extension.

It’s been an interesting summer, but not in the way that I think most Gooners originally anticipated.

The Suarez deal is so screwed up that I can’t see it happening now. LFC seem to have entrenched themselves and I don’t see AFC paying over-the-odds. Consequently, it’s time to move on. Gustavo has made overtures to the Club and we should follow-up immediately. He’s a solid player, fills a need, and based on the reports, would be reasonably priced.

Arsene has publically stated that our squad is thin, but the lack of media would suggest that there isn’t much transfer activity taking place on any front. It’s not inconceivable that we can only get two or three new players in. Do we rely on Diaby and/or younger players to fill out the roster? Heck, Bendtner may end in up the squad by default because we can’t offload him and are so short staffed.

    • stag133 13 August, 2013 at 20:06 Log in to Reply

As Josh noted below, is Gustavo someone we need? As in, is that the position we are most desperate to get it? Not sure about that, but talent rules… if he is good enough, he’ll play.

Gorcuff is also rumored to be willing to take a big pay cut, to come to Arsenal from Lyon…

I still don’t think we’ll sign anyone of note… unless we get another ass-whooping to start the season, and the club look bad, with egg on Arsene’s face… if we start well-ish, we’ll do NOTHING.

We’ve done nothing… except lose depth, which was not good enough to get into the starting line-up, and was sucking up money on the bench…

The thought of Bendtner back at the club, is hilarious…

and relying on Diaby to do anything, is insanity.

i could see them again bring in a couple of last minute 5-15 million signings that are solid. If we were going to get a match winner we should’ve paid a premium (consider it a form of insurance) to lock in the Higuain deal right after we agreed personal terms. Now it looks like no one is available.

As for Gustavo, I wouldn’t mind having a proven Brazilian international in the squad. Furthermore, Diaby cannot be relied upon and we are far too dependent on Arteta. I feel like we’ve been linked to Gourcuff for the past 2-3 years with nothing ever coming of it.

good stuff, dag. i don’t think there’s any question who should be the arsenal lb. it’s kieran gibbs over nacho monreal. monreal is suspect. he lacks the pace and physicality required. there are plenty of times where other players have bailed him out. likewise, there are times where he wasn’t bailed out, like against spurs. in my opinion, gibbs is not only the better defender but the better soccer player.

where would luis gustavo play is also very interesting. rumors range from 14 to 17 million gbp. that’s a lot of dough so he’s got to be coming to start. is he better than arteta? i’m not so sure. besides, arteta is the leader of this team. who will lead the team if you drop arteta? if you keep arteta in the team, who will you drop? wilshere? ramsey? cazorla? i’m far from a ramsey fan but if he plays every week like he did against city, i will not complain when his name is on the team sheet. like i said, a protege for arteta. kondogbia is the guy.

someone from liverpool is in the media talking about suarez every day. for crying out loud, their owner was on the sportcenter ticker the other day talking about how they won’t sell. arsenal look a true class act because no one from the club is talking about this ordeal. liverpool look desperate as it’s obvious they’re trying to make a market for suarez that doesn’t exist.

they’re in big trouble with him. what if they did renege a non-verbal agreement to allow him to leave? there’s no way that kid is going to apologize. i don’t think any of us would. how long are they willing to sit him out? if the results don’t go right, how long before the fans start calling for him and he still hasn’t apologized? there is a long list of hypotheticals and only a few favor liverpool. there’s a reason you don’t keep players that want to leave. if the transfer window closes and suarez is still a liverpool player, john henry is about to learn a very tough lesson. rodgers knows better but is allowing this to happen.

the bottom line is that kid doesn’t want to play for liverpool anymore. the only team that’s come in for him is arsenal and they have placed 40 million on the table for him. that’s real money and way too much to turn your nose up at; especially when suarez want’s to leave and you need players to improve your team. selling him asap is the best thing for all parties. forcing a guy to stay that doesn’t want to be there is foolish. they won’t get anywhere near his best, and they damn sure won’t get that kind of money for him from anyone else.

    • stag133 13 August, 2013 at 02:58 Log in to Reply

Josh, I think you are talking like an Arsenal fan who wants Suarez, when it comes to the situation.

John Henry is a pretty straight shooter. Always has been when it comes to owning the Red Sox, and I will assume he’s the same at Liverpool.

He does NOT have to sell the player. They don’t want to… and what option does Suarez have, other than to PLAY FOOTBALL, and PLAY IT WELL?

If he is at Liverpool, and refuses to play, he doesn’t get paid.
If he is at Liverpool, and plays poorly, his value goes DOWN, not up.

Liverpool are NOT selling this player to a club they are trying to catch in the standings.
It is NOT in their best interest to make a rival better. You might think they are deluded in their thinking, but they weren’t that far behind Arsenal in the standings.
They were 12 points behind Arsenal, we were 16 behind United.

You simply do NOT sell your best player to a rival team in your league, a team you are trying to catch in the standings. ONLY ARSENAL do that.
      It’s a very stupid move.
It will NOT occur in this situation.
They are much better off keeping the player, forcing him to play, or selling him for less to another team… someone will emerge besides Arsenal.
Tells you quite a bit that NO BIG CLUB want this jackass in their team. He’s poison.
