We care. . . but we want Arsenal to win again. NOW!

We care. . . about winning.

When it really boils down to it, no one ever became a supporter of a club because of their ability to be financially sound or have vast amounts of money in reserve.

Sports is entertainment. At a minimum stylistic, free-flowing football is entertaining. Goals are entertaining. But what is more entertaining is winning. Being champions of something is what we want.

Sure there is a certain pride in knowing that our club is financially sound in these financially rough times. We are buoyed by the fact that it’s unlikely our club will end up like Leeds, Pompey and Blackburn. It’s reassuring to know all this. But the comfort it gives is minimal.

Many people have said it – there are no prizes for being the best with your finances.  The only prize that matters to anyone is the one you get at the end of a cup run or at the end of a season.  Our meeting minimum requirements are – okay. Not great. They are okay. But they can’t be the hook we rest upon.

Arsenal are not just a club to ‘get by.’ Sure we’ve had dark eras before. Ask anyone who lived through parts of the 70s and 80s. But we’ve gone out of our way to position ourselves as one of the premier clubs in Europe. We hold our continued presence in the Champion’s League up as a testament to our stature.

But in this modern era of football saying you are a big club and acting like it are two different things. Arsenal’s record of competing in Europe is par excellence.  To be sure. But if we don’t move beyond just getting there at some point it’s not enough.

Our growth in stature overseas is an amazing feat. But how long does that last if you don’t have the silverware to support it.

The improved commercial deals are excellent but wouldn’t they be better if we actually won something? Every day we hear of some new deal at United – simply because they’ve won.  Winning begets success not just on the pitch but off it.  The Puma deal is outstanding (if its true) but consider this – wouldn’t Nike, next to Adidas the pre-eminent brand in global football, paid more to retain the brand if Arsenal had actually been winning.

Brands want to be associated with success. Adidas dumped Liverpool because their status no longer aligned to the actual feats on the pitch. Sure Warrior came in with a bumper deal. But let’s not kid ourselves, they came in because John Henry has an association to Warrior through some of his other businesses. Every scouser will tell you differently but straight from Adidas, they dropped Liverpool.

Are we sure that Nike even came back with a bid? We don’t know. Nor will we ever. Puma’s deal if true certainly gives Arsenal more financial clout but what good is it if it’s not used.

So why this rant?

Because it bears beating this drum. Someone at Arsenal needs to wake up and take stock of what’s really important to its primary constituents – the supporters.

Sports have gone global and as such it, like all global brands suddenly finds itself having to please not only the supporters but the global partners they have courted. But those partners will come and go. Whether it’s the term of a contract, the downfall of an economy or just because they didn’t get what they wanted from the sports club.

Supporters never leave. Those that do were never supporters to begin with. Supporters are there because their fathers, grandfathers and other family members were likely there before them.  Others like me found ourselves loving our team on our own but our love isn’t any weakier than others. We don’t leave and its time the clubs, in particular Arsenal, remember this.

We’ve been fed over and over again in the last few years, that the club’s desire is to win. To compete on the global stage. Prove it. Show the commitment towards doing that.

Words are ringing hollow now. Actions are going to be the only thing that moves opinion. Sure, we understand transfers can be difficult. We understand that sometimes you come up against a wall that you didn’t expect.

But for Arsenal it’s the same story we hear every year. Something isn’t adding up.

We don’t expect Arsenal to suddenly to invest in winning like Chelsea, City, PSG or Monaco. No, we’ll settle in investing in winning like Dortmund and Napoli who spent money wisely and come out of it with stronger squads and looking every bit the challenger for their respective titles.

There is plenty of time in the window. There isn’t before this weekend’s premier league kickoff.  I’ve moved beyond thinking anything will get done before then. It will be September 2nd when we finally lock down any transfers in my opinion. I hope I am wrong.

I want more than anything for Arsene Wenger to have real success one more time before he heads out into the sunset. I’m happy we made it to the Champion’s League for another season. But it simply isn’t enough any more. Like many, I want to see actions and not hear words.

This season presented Arsenal with the ripest opportunity to compete for a title. United, Chelsea, and City all have new managers. Pre-season signs show that all three squads are having issues adapting to them. Those issues won’t last long and a good start to the season is imperative to doing something significant.

Arsenal’s starting XI is as good as any in the top 4. Nothing you can say will make me think otherwise. It can compete. The problem is, that outside of the XI we lack significant alternatives and backups in case it goes pear-shaped in a game or a string of injuries occurs.

We can’t hear that there wasn’t value for the money. We can’t hear that our silverware aspirations are going to hinge on a squad with a lot of promising talent backing up a good core XI. It won’t suffice. Inaction is going to be majorly problematic for everyone in a leadership position at Arsenal.

We care about all the things the owner, CEO, board and manager all care about but we care about winning more.

no arteta is a big deal. arsenal lost him for four games last season and only managed to win 1 of those games. it’s the only position arsenal have no recognized cover and there’s no good reason why they don’t. it’s, very arguably, the most important position on the field. inexcusable! shameful!

Fact 1: DJ and Miquel were loaned out for the entire season.
Fact 2: TV and Monreal are out for a while due to injury.
Fact 3: Squillaci and Santos were released.
Fact 4: Sagna has picked up a knock and may not be available for our first game.
Fact 5: We only have 4 remaining defender’s in our squad for Aston Villa on Saturday.

Who the fuck runs a club with 150M quid in cash reserves like that?

If anyone can come up with a rational answer to the above question I would be delighted. Maybe Gary can?

just read that Arteta could face 4 to 6 weeks out, with a torn thigh muscle…
shaping up for another wonderful season with the AFC…

Wenger just made his annual statement a few days before the season starts, with us signing nobody of note … we’re still looking for a few good players to bring in!
      hahahahahahahaha.

Good thing we never followed up on Gustavo despite his clear signal of interest.

        • stag133 16 August, 2013 at 16:50

yeah, well… he wanted to come to Arsenal, but it would have cost like 10 Mill, and we don’t pay over the top for anyone…
so instead, he’s gone to Wolfsburg for like 9.3 Million.

EVERY RUMOR YOU HEAR ABOUT ARSENAL TARGETS, is BULLSHIT.!!!
It’s all a smoke screen, to fool the suckers buying tickets and merchandise.

Arsenal are not spending money unless they are embarrassed into doing so.
No ambition. No interest in competing for trophies.

Good article in the Telegraph addressing the question of why can’t Arsenal close the big deals…

“The other concern relates squarely to Wenger. He, after all, is the most powerful man at Arsenal and generally the ultimate arbiter of who comes and goes.
Wenger’s desire to make signings is not in doubt but what appears to have become outdated is his valuation of top players. There is a certain strength in walking away from a deal once the bidding gets out of hand but, if you find yourself in that position too often, does there not come a stage where you question whether it is your own valuation that has become unrealistic?”

      I don’t think that’s being fair Vibe.
We aren’t Chelsea or ManCity… we won’t pay the going rate for top players!
and… don’t forget Financial Fair Play is coming soon, and we’ll really be able to make moves
      then…
oh… and once we can get stadium debt down, and we aren’t handicapped by that crushing debt, we’ll start buying top players and nobody will be able to compete with us…

We’re leading the league from behind!! And when they catch up/fall back, they’ll be right where Arsene wants them!

    Here’s the Summer Scoreboard:

Man United: chasing players, I’d bet on Felliani before the window closes, but they won the league last year, and everyone else is chasing them…

Man City: Jovetic in for 30 Mill & Negredo in for lots of cash.
BIG signings, but also lost Tevez, who was a winner… new manager in Pellegrini.
They aren’t standing still that’s for sure.

Chelsea: MOURINHO, changes everything at Chelsea. You know their defense will be very good now… Andre Schurrle, a nice pick-up, and the rumor of the day is 32 year old ETO coming to the Bridge…

Totteringham: Haven’t sold Bale, yet… that is MASSIVE.
30 Million for Saldado… and our target every window Etienne Capoue, for a pittance, 9 Mill.
If they keep Bale, they will have improved again.

Arsenal FC: teenager from 2nd Division France, named Yaya.

    ——————

Yet there are still people who don’t think the club or the manager or the board… should be taken to task, second/third & fourth guessed…

Please, tell me how we are better now, than at season’s end, and how the above teams haven’t improved… (other than United, who everyone is chasing, and WILL bring players in before the window closes, you can bet on that).

i don’t know why arsenal haven’t purchased any players yet. they may be the only premier league team not to have made a purchase this summer (has man united?). very popular opinion believes that arsenal’s biggest failure has been the inability to replace david dein’s charisma at the negotiating table. in the years since dein’s departure, arsenal have lost their best players without replacing them. sorry, dag, but i haven’t seen any football manager in the world win trophies under those circumstances.

the disgusting thing is we continue to hear how wenger has “lost the plot” and most want to lay the blame at his feet. arsene wenger is a football manager and should be focused exclusively on football. he shouldn’t be negotiating deals. just like a groundskeeper shouldn’t be required to pull double-duty as the physio, even if he was trained as a therapist. arsenal are too big for that.

despite the club’s vicious cycle of losing top players while failing to sign adequate replacements, wenger’s still kept arsenal in the top 4. that’s not insignificant. it’s not luck either. i’ve often disagreed with wenger but not when it comes to him managing this club. that dude has got to know what the hell he’s doing. i challenge anyone to name a top manager who’s lost their top players year after year with poor replacements and still finish that high up the table. would pep guardiola or jose mourinho even consider working under those circumstances? arsenal just need a decent level of competence at the negotiating table. if not, they need some luck.

heard a rumor that sagna got injured playing for france. why in heaven’s name would you schedule a friendly three days before the premier league begins? who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?

  6. stag133 14 August, 2013 at 17:00 Log in to Reply

    Very well written article DAG.
Not much new, but then again, we were told (as usual) that this Summer would be different…

Also enjoyed a similar take on Soccernet from Gooner Andrew Mangan:
    ———————-

“We want to be a club that is competing at the very top end of the game,” he said. “And that means competing to win the Premier League and competing to win the Champions League. Our majority owner Mr. Kroenke has made it clear that while it’s an achievement to make the Champions League our ultimate objective is to win the major trophies.

“We get beaten up along the way but I think we are an extraordinarily ambitious club,” he said.

Strong words, indeed, but anyone can talk. Arsenal fans were happy to listen and keen to believe, but the feeling was that actions would speak louder than any PR spin Gazidis or anyone else at the club came out with.

And if we judge this summer on actions alone, it’s hard to reconcile the Gazidis’s talk of extraordinary ambition with what we’ve seen. One player, Yaya Sanogo — a talented 20-year-old with an unfortunate injury record and little or no top-flight experience — has come in, while the squad has been culled of “deadwood” and fringe players. In itself, this is not a bad thing. Of the nine first-team squad members who have gone, only two (Vito Mannone and Gervinho) made any positive contribution to last season, but you can’t speak of ambition and not replace any of those players with better ones.

Last season Arsenal finished 16 points behind Premier League winners Manchester United. While they might struggle to defend their title after a change of manager, it’s impossible to see Arsenal make up that many points with the squad they currently have. Around them, Chelsea and Manchester City have added to their teams quietly and efficiently and the competition will be more intense.

Arsenal’s squad simply isn’t good enough to win the Champions League. Despite a fine 2-0 win over the eventual winners Bayern Munich last season, there are teams far better than them in Europe. The idea that, with this group of players, they can compete properly with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and the big spenders such as Chelsea, PSG and others seems far-fetched. They haven’t been beyond the round of 16 for three seasons, winning the thing is not so much as a step, but a giant leap, too far.

So, you’d say a domestic cup is their best hope of silverware, but even then there must be huge doubts. When they had the chance to put a trophy on the shelf in the League Cup in 2011 against Birmingham, they contrived to lose the final in an almost comedic manner. Last season they were dumped out of the same competition by Bradford, a team three divisions below them, and the FA Cup went begging after a home defeat by Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

To lose one of those games might be seen as unfortunate — giant killings often happen in cup competitions — but going out twice in one season to lower-league opposition speaks to a fundamental flaw within the team and its mentality. Although the cups represent Arsenal’s best chance of a trophy, I don’t think they have what it takes to go the distance in either tournament.
    ———————–

Unfortunately, says it all, between the 2 of you.
Can’t be bothered to care about this team… but I hope Theo and Wilshire stay healthy and have good seasons, that way, their value will go up, and we can cash in on them.

  7. LJstar 14 August, 2013 at 16:27 Log in to Reply

Champions go down in history, risk takers, not the people who were financially sensible and made a profit. Does the board share the same ambition as all of us fans? Or do they just want to make money? I really hope for the sake of jack, theo and co that a few decent signings will come as it would be a sin not to add to this allready brilliant team and make us real contenders.

    Fuck Robin van persie.

    • stag133 14 August, 2013 at 17:01 Log in to Reply

F8ck RVP, but Arsenal fans wanted Suarez, doing worse than Robin ever did, to get away from Liverpool, and come to Arsenal.
Tell me how that makes sense?

      • LJstar 14 August, 2013 at 17:30 Log in to Reply

Not every arsenal fan wanted Suarez. How would he being doing worse than robin did? Both massive acts of disloyalty of the same proportion in my opinion. Yes Liverpool fans stuck by him through the racism and biting but not because they’re lovely forgiving scousers but because Luis is phenomenal and they know that without him they might be sort of kind of a little bit how do you say it… Fucked.

        • stag133 14 August, 2013 at 21:42

sorry, I don’t ever remember RVP openly courting other teams to come get him… did I miss that?
also, Arsenal CHOSE to sell VanPersie to United… in the league… handing them the title… that would be Arsenal FCs sole fault.

        • LJstar 14 August, 2013 at 22:56

You’re right he didn’t openly court other teams. Maybe arsene should have took the same stance as brendan rodgers because selling to a rival is insane and the fact that RVP left did honestly break my heart. I just feel like as an arsenal fan i’m being fully mugged off at the minute, we’re always the laughing stock in the transfer market, and with a supposed 70-100 million to spend this time, what the fuck is going on?

        • stag133 15 August, 2013 at 04:44

well, we have that in common… I think most of us feel the same….
we did NOT have to sell RVP, and especially not to United….

since many more players have departed, than we have brought in… (that would be one 2nd division French teenager)… how can anyone believe we can possibly challenge for the league or CL?
it is basically another year of failure… because we didn’t even attempt to improve the team…
if we have the money, which we definitely do, then it is absolute neglect… and disregard for winning.

Calm down, Arsene will sign 3-4 players before the window closes. I think he feels his squad is good enough to handle the first 2-3 games. Certainly the current crop of players can beat Villa, Fenebache & Fulham…can’t they? I totally agree transfers shld have been done in time for the start of the season but when you work hard for your money you want to get the best deals possible

Your whining would be sad, if it weren’t so damn irritating. And then you take this patronising attituse on top. Bet your football management experience does not extend beyond fantasy league, where the price is fixed and anyone who wants to can all buy the same player. Please stop crying and support the manager and the players we have, or h
just fuck off somewhere else where the manager dances to tha fans’ thne all the time. Your moaning makes me sick.

I found this article reasonable and level headed , Gary – or is it Arsen?

    • stag133 14 August, 2013 at 16:57 Log in to Reply

Wow. Gary, your thoughts just make me sad. Sad that the club have suckers like you who will eat up anything they do… shit all over the fans every season… and not only do you come back for more, but you berate supporters who want to see the club actually STOP LYING to the supporters year in and year out, and TRY TO WIN A F’N TROPHY.

The folks on the board and in management love your type. Keep buying the BS, and tickets, and concessions, and merchandise. 4th place is a trophy… so pay the highest prices in Europe, you fools.

      pathetic.

You used the tired line about “your football management experience”… where’s the line about supporting City or Chelsea?
